Aevidum: I’ve got your back Last week a conference was held at Rock Lititz which brought 32 schools together to promote awareness and the mission of the Aevidum clubs.

Aevidum was founded in 2004 after the 2003 suicide of Cocalico student Phil Cardin. Maggie Cardin, Phil Cardin’s sister, who was a sixth-grade student when her brother died started the club. On Aevidum’s website, aevidum.org, she talks candidly about Phil’s death, and why such tragedies are preventable.

Lancaster County Young Artists Exhibition The Lancaster County Young Artists Exhibition opened on Friday, March 1 at the Lancaster Museum of Art. The following art students from Catholic High were winners in this year’s show: Annie Morris received a Gold Award and the same work was awarded a special Award of Excellence.

Logan Paulukow received a Silver Award and the same piece was awarded a special Merit Award.

Uyen Duong and Will Koenig also received Gold Awards in the show.

The following were awarded Silver Awards for there work:

The show is open to the public and runs thru April 14 at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 North Lime Street, Lancaster.

Thank you to the 61 students and staff

who came out to donate blood on Thursday, February 28th. We were able to collect 43 units, saving the lives of 129 patients in our area.

Mini-THON Recap

$43,077.45 Thank you to all of the parent volunteers, dancers and supporters of this year’s Mini-THON. Lancaster Catholic was able to raise $43,077.45 for the Four Diamonds program that provides care for pediatric cancer patients while covering the cost for treatment so families never see a bill and research for the cure.

Rachel’s Challenge Chain Reaction First, thank you for your help in preparing students for Rachel’s Challenge. After postponing it twice due to weather and consulting with the Rachel’s Challenge staff, we made the decision that having it in the 4th quarter of this school year would eliminate our senior audience and their leadership in implementing it. We would also exclude our incoming freshmen (2019-20) from participating. The best decision is to begin our next school year with the Rachel’s Challenge Day of Events on September 10, 2019. Although the event will not occur this spring, there is a plan in motion for challenging our students to be more like Rachel Scott this Lenten season.

Aevidum is planning our annual Aevidum Week from April 22nd to April 26th. This year, we are creating a mural for the school, educating the faculty and students about teen depression, anxiety, and suicide prevention, and planning a Food Truck Festival at the stadium the evening of April 26th. There will be great food, corn hole and ladder ball games, live music, and more.

As a visual commitment and community-building event, we want to build a paper chain with each link representing a good deed. Our goal is for the chain to reach the length of our football field and be raised by our club members during the festival. This was intended to be one of our Friends of Rachel follow-up events, but I would still like to execute it this spring.

Thanks to all of you, kindness and generosity are not new concepts for our students.

Aevidum will be creating and collecting links and asking the student body to participate during the lunches. You could help by simply encouraging your students to take part in the challenge.

School Counseling Corner Charting a Course for Next Year - with Course Selection underway for our current freshmen, sophomores and juniors, the School Counselors have been meeting with many students to discuss their 2019-20 courses. The Counselors have been wandering through lunch periods in the cafeteria in case students have questions, but we can be reached before and after school, during Crusader Periods, through email or through a request for an appointment. Please be mindful that all completed course forms are due in homeroom next week: juniors - March 12th, sophomores - March 13th, and freshmen - March 14th.

Career Lessons - School Counselor Greg Dietz and his graduate school intern, Kaitlin Myer, began career development lessons with the sophomores during Crusader Periods. Utilizing Naviance tools, the sophomores were directed to the Career Key which connects careers with an individual’s three main Holland Domains which include: Realistic, Artistic, Investigative, Social, Enterprising and Conventional domains.

Parents are encouraged to explore Naviance so they may keep up with the lessons and tasks that their children are accomplishing in school and assist them with their future plans.

Spring Fever - although there is still snow on the ground, spring is closer than you think and with it comes the transition of changing the clock ahead an hour and perhaps, some feelings of depression. If you see your child’s behavior changing: sleeping excessively, becoming distant or secretive, disengaging in what used to be activities they prized, skipping school or complaining of headaches or stomach issues, or feeling out of sorts, the School Counseling Office has outside resources that can help.
