A Message from Our President

Dear Friends, This year may have been Lancaster Catholic’s finest hour! As schools throughout the land continued to struggle to meet the unprecedented challenges the Pandemic imposed on us all, many kept their doors closed to in-person learning for most of the year. I am proud to report that we opened our doors for in-person learning from the first day of this school year. Our faculty, coaches and staff members came to work every day in what one described as ‘the petri dish’—willingly accepting the risk that tens of thousands of their colleagues across the world did not—to teach their students. We were committed to providing our students with the best possible experience, and, as educators, we know for most that means face to face with their teachers. While conducting all classes in person with masks on, our faculty also had to teach students who needed to learn from home, at the same time, as those who lived with immuno-compromised family members needed to learn their lessons virtually. This required our teachers to deliver every lesson, every day in two modes—to those in their classrooms as well as those tuning in remotely—simultaneously! Our teachers never worked harder! I am so proud of our students, faculty and staff for their perseverance and commitment to excellence and to each other. The benefactors we celebrate in these pages made it all possible. Every classroom had to be equipped with the very costly equipment required for any student on any day to see, hear and participate in every class. Safety for all was a top priority. Beyond the social distancing and mask requirements, we needed to ensure that every single person who entered our campus every day was free of the tell-tale temperature over 100.4 degrees that could indicate COVID. Therefore, each entrance was equipped with temperature scanners through which every person entering the building had to pass to prevent exposure. The donors whose names follow funded all those needs and we extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of them! We are pleased and deeply grateful to present this A Celebration of Philanthropy thanking the many benefactors and supporters without whom our school simply could not exist. We hope you will join us in offering a prayer of thanksgiving for the many blessings our students received thanks to the generosity of the names on these pages. Stepping Into The Future

Lancaster Catholic has spent the summer looking to the future. After almost five years of planning and discussions that have happened for many years, imagination and 3D renderings have become a reality in the form of the new STEM Innovation Center, which will be open and ready for students before the first day of classes in September. This is just the first phase of the multi-million dollar renovations planned for the future of Lancaster Catholic, as we gear up for the next five generations of Crusaders to thrive with 21st Century learning tools and environments. The STEM Innovation Center is the first major campus renovation to LCHS since 1964, but next year, plans call for a state-of-the-art Fine & Performing Arts Center, Student Commons and much more. Watching the transformation take place over the past few months has been fascinating. Gala Honors Ganses With Record Results

The Ganses were the recipients of the Saint John Paul II Excellence in Leadership Award during this year's Gala, which was held virtually for the second-straight year. A special evening full of surprises and story-telling filled the air during Lancaster Catholic's 7th Annual Purple & Gold Gala in April. The event was held virtually for the second-straight year, but that didn't stop the philanthropic nature of the Lancaster Catholic community. LCHS honored Gerry & Suzanne Ganse with the Saint John Paul II Excellence in Leadership Award for their continued commitment to Catholic education in Lancaster County. The highlight of the night happened when school administration brought out a check for $108,000, donated to the school's Caring Crusader Weekend by friends and classmates of the Ganses in their name. In all, Catholic High raised $241,477 during the fundraising weekend, surpassing the goal of $225,000. Gerry & Suzanne were honored at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, located in downtown Lancaster. The event, which included a few special guest appearances and a sit down with the couple, was live-streamed to the Catholic High community. Making a Difference by Jen Reed, Catholic Witness

The establishment of Siena College’s Student Senate COVID Safety and Vaccine Committee came with one goal: keep the Siena community alive throughout the pandemic. As co-chair of the novel committee developed in response to the novel virus, Annamaria Walden focused on two goals: a safe and healthy campus environment, and vaccine promotion. A 2018 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, Walden worked to make those goals a reality this semester at the upstate New York campus where she is a pre-med major. “I joined the Student Senate’s COVID committee in January to help with messaging and education to encourage my peers to get the vaccine,” Walden said. “This semester, President (Chris) Gibson issued a vaccine challenge to reach 70 percent vaccination on campus” to allow for more social gatherings and less mask-wearing. The committee’s efforts proved successful, with more than 50 percent of the student population receiving their inoculations within three weeks of the shots being offered to them. Siena College is home to approximately 2,400 students. Reaching the goal took some effort on the college’s part, and the COVID Safety and Vaccine Committee stepped up to help. The first endeavor was a campus-wide survey in March to determine student attitudes about the vaccine. Half the student population responded, and the results illustrated that two-thirds were willing to get vaccinated, 20 percent were unsure, and 15 percent had already received it. In an effort to address those who were unsure about the vaccine, Walden and her committee co-chair worked with Siena’s Health Promotion Office to deliver messaging for a social media campaign. They also executed a town hall meeting for students to ask questions of President Gibson and Dr. Ray Walsh, the director of Siena’s Joint Medical Program. By the time the campus offered its first Pfizer vaccine clinic to students, 500 signed up to fill the clinic to capacity and ultimately responded to the vaccination challenge. The goal of the effort was to take care of the community, said Walden, a member of St. John Neumann Parish in Lancaster. “When I was touring colleges, I knew I wanted to be in the Albany area. Siena stood out because it had the same community feel that I had at Lancaster Catholic. I knew I was going into an environment where I would thrive and where the atmosphere was about building people up,” she said. She said listening and showing empathy were especially critical in sharing vaccination messages with students who were unsure or against receiving it – especially since social distancing, mask-wearing and vaccines can become a political hot button.

“We had an additional event that targeted students who were still hesitant about the vaccine, and students who had family members still unsure about side effects. We offered pointers on how to listen and respond with empathy, and tidbits of scientific information on the vaccine,” she said. “Our efforts were about genuinely listening to people’s concerns and responding with understanding, regardless of their viewpoint.” Walden is a rising senior at Siena, where she is part of a combined degree program that will take her to Albany Medical College for four years. She aspires to be a primary care provider. “I have Lancaster Catholic to thank for so much,” she said of her college success. “I learned leadership skills, professionalism. I have so much respect and admiration for the faculty and staff at Lancaster Catholic. Academically, I capitalized on my time in the sciences there, taking two sciences courses senior year, and five by the time I graduated. My education gave me the skills to enter a combined med program. I feel like I am thriving,” she said. “On the spiritual level, the four years of Catholic education – especially junior year Morality – taught me what I personally think is the great lesson, to love God and to love our neighbors,” Walden said. “At Siena, I’ve been able to fuse my passion for science, my ability to be a leader and my genuine concern for others into what I do now. Lancaster Catholic helped me fashion and grow into those three principles, and now I get to perform them.” This story appeared in the Catholic Witness in June. Annamaria Walden '18 was active in many aspects of the Lancaster Catholic life while she was a student, including the musicals, pictured below in Crazy for You in 2018.

Bee-ing All-Around Successful

Recent graduate Sarah Scott '21 was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Farm Credit Foundation for Agricultural Advancement. Sarah submitted essays and a video describing her own ventures in agriculture as a hobby farmer and beekeeper. Sarah was an active student during her time at LCHS, spending a majority of her free time in the Fine & Performing Arts Department and as a leader in the marching band. She will attend Penn State main campus in the fall to major in veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences.

Recent Alum Joins Religious Life In September of 2020, Autumn Cybulski '19 entered the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor, Mich. This order of Dominican Sisters is centered on catechizing through teaching in Catholic Schools, which will be Autumn's future career. This past July 22nd, she received her full habit and her new name, Sr. Mary Solanus. Entering her second year, she is now a novitate and will take temporary vows in 2 years. The boys tennis team capped off an undefeated season with the program's first PIAA State Championship.

The Writers Anonymous Club professionally published their literary journal, Mosaics, in May. Natalie Tran '21 designed the cover and served as Associate Editor, while Madison Lewis '21 was this year's editor.

St. Catherine’s Society The St. Catherine Society honors the individuals who, through their planned and estate gifts, have made a significant commitment to Lancaster Catholic High School. The Society expresses Catholic High’s abiding gratitude for those persons who endorse its heritage and traditions and who have provided philanthropic supports to ensure that generations to come will enjoy the benefits of a Lancaster Catholic High School education. Established in 1999, the St. Catherine Society provides a way to recognize our special benefactors who have helped to secure the future of this institution by the thoughtful, meaningful inclusion of Catholic High in their financial planning. The Society allows Lancaster Catholic to convey our heartfelt and everlasting gratitude to planned and deferred donors before the gift is actually realized. We are not only grateful to them for their vision in providing for the future needs of Lancaster Catholic High School, but also for their leadership.

Scholarships, Endowments & Awards

The following is a list of Foundation of Catholics United in Service (FOCUS) accounts. These endowed funds grow in perpetuity and provide tremendous tuition benefits to our students. The Agusta Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2017 to provide tuition assistance to deserving students who would otherwise be unable to attend Lancaster Catholic High School. J. Andrew Breslin ‘89 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993. Each year, an award is presented to a rising senior who excels in Math, Physics and Music. Class of 1955 Scholarship

In order to provide current and future generations with the same opportunity to attend Lancaster Catholic High School that they enjoyed, members of the Class of 1955 created an endowed fund for tuition assistance. The LCHS Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund was created in honor of the 50th Anniversary of their graduation. Class of 1957 Scholarship

Inspired by the Class of 1955, the LCHS Class of 1957 Scholarship Fund was created during their 50th Reunion celebration to commemorate the Golden Anniversary of their graduation. Earnings are used to fund the tuition assistance program at Catholic High. Carl A. Fuss Tuition Supplement Fund was established in 2001, the Carl A. Fuss Tuition Supplement Fund is a memorial conceived by Mrs. Noreen Fuss to honor her husband, a 1956 graduate of Catholic High. This privately endowed fund aids students who require financial assistance to afford tuition.

Anthony J. Haefner ‘88 Tuition Assistance Fund provides tuition assistance for students in any grade whose families would find the cost of tuition to be burdensome and without such assistance would not otherwise be able to attend the school.

LCHS Endowment Fund

Julia Ibbotson Martin (Class of 1948) Scholarship is presented to a student entering 9th grade, with preference given to female students who studied at St. Anne’s Catholic School, and who are exceptional students in financial need.

Carlo and Theresa Maio Memorial Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to qualified students who attend Lancaster Catholic High School. This endowed FOCUS Fund was established in 2000.

IFCA, PA Chapter, Lancaster Circle, Scholarship

In the Spring of 2002, the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae, Pennsylvania Chapter, Lancaster Circle, Scholarship Fund was established through the FOCUS foundation to provide, in perpetuity, tuition assistance to students in good academic standing who would otherwise be unable to attend the school because of a lack of financial resources. J. Norman Klos ‘34 Memorial Tuition Assistance was established to forever honor J. Norman Klos for his devotion to his alma mater. J. Norman Klos was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, but he felt his greatest accomplishment was being valedictorian of LCHS Class of 1934. He named the school as the primary beneficiary of his estate, at his passing on August 24, 2005.

Earnings from this Memorial Scholarship Fund provide financial aid through tuition assistance to worthy students and their families and helps to underwrite the general operating budget of the school.

Carmen A. Malone Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by Carmen’s mother, the Carmen A. Malone Tuition Scholarship Fund was set up to assist those interested in a Lancaster Catholic High School education who could benefit from financial support. Michael Mascuch Scholarship Fund was endowed to provide tuition assistance for students in good academic standing with a demonstrated financial need, who otherwise would be unable to attend Lancaster Catholic High School. Edward W. McCaskey ‘37 Fund

In 2004, the Edward W. McCaskey ’37 Fund was established by the members of the McCaskey family to honor the memory of this extraordinary alumnus, who achieved acclaim in the fields of music and business before assuming control of the NFL’s Chicago Bears. This FOCUS fund provides revenue which is used to provide tuition assistance to deserving students.

Patrick McGrath ‘06 Memorial Scholarship was established for deserving students who desire a Catholic High education and have an interest in music. Jean and Jack O’Donnell Scholarship Fund was created to assist deserving Lancaster Catholic students, with preference for children of law enforcement officers or secondarily, children of firefighters. PACER Scholarship Fund A gift to memorialize Cesare and Adelina Taglieri, Phillip F. Taglieri and Robert J. and Elizabeth A. Ackerman, was used to establish The PACER Scholarship Fund in Memory of the Taglieri and Ackerman Families. The FOCUS fund financially supports a student who is working to his/her ability, is giving of himself/herself to the school or parish through God-given talents and who has demonstrated financial need. Gregory Pautler ‘80 Memorial Scholarship/ Endowment was established to honor the life of Greg Pautler ‘80. Greg had an unending capacity for friendship and laughter and touched the lives of many. This scholarship provides tuition assistance to deserving students who would otherwise be unable to attend Lancaster Catholic High School. James J. Rottmund ‘49 Scholarship was established in 1999 to provide tuition assistance for students in good academic standing.

Charles Schreder Scholarship

Lancaster Catholic was one of the beneficiaries of a transformative gift from the Estate of Charles Schreder. His generosity was greatly appreciated and impactful to our school. The fund was established in 2014 to recognize his significant contribution to the LCHS community. It provides a tuition scholarship to a student who lacks the financial resources necessary to pay full tuition. The J.H. and M.K. Scott Scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown an aptitude for studies and has a strong personal desire for a Lancaster Catholic education, but lacks the financial resources necessary to pay full tuition. The James Schoeplein Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 by Mrs. Sheila Schoeplein to honor Jim’s memory and his strong advocacy for Catholic education. This scholarship was set up to assist those interested in a Lancaster Catholic High School education, and could benefit from financial support.

Simmons Memorial Scholarship To perpetually honor members of the Simmons and Eichelman families, the Simmons Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of Margee Simmons Eichelman ’73 and Gilbert and Dora Simmons was established to provide tuition assistance to deserving students who lack the means to attend Lancaster Catholic High School.

Steele-Krall Tuition Assistance Fund was established in 2003 to provide tuition assistance to students attending LCHS. The Fund was created in memory of Florence Steele and the Krall family. Florence was a loyal friend of Catholic High, and the Krall family has been associated with the school since the earliest days of our history.

W. Roger Simpson ‘34 Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the exemplary life of this graduate and parent of four LCHS alumni. He served several terms on the board of directors and volunteered his legal expertise. This endowed scholarship benefits students who have a great desire for a Catholic education, but limited funds to obtain it.

Lois Szczepanski Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a deserving student who would otherwise be financially unable to attend Lancaster Catholic. Lancaster Catholic High lost a gifted teacher and friend when Mrs. Szczepanski was unexpectedly taken from us during the 2003-04 academic year. She truly loved this school, and the Lois Szczepanski Memorial Scholarship was established in her memory.

Standish Family Scholarship was established in 2009 following the death of Mr. Victor J. Standish. The family trust provides funding to this endowed FOCUS account fund that will provide tuition assistance to students attending Lancaster Catholic High School. The fund was established in loving memory of Mr. Standish, who was a loyal alum and friend of LCHS.

Judith Connor Weaver Scouting Service Tuition Assistance Scholarship was created in 2010 to provide tuition assistance to a deserving student, with preference given to an incoming 9th grader who attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, and secondarily, to any other parochial school. Preference is given to a student who has shown an aptitude for service to his/her community through a commitment to volunteerism.

Dennis M. Cook ‘86 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007, the Dennis M. Cook ‘86 Memorial Scholarship honors the life of an outstanding young man. Dennis was working in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. His loving family has created a four-year scholarship to assist students who have shown an aptitude for studies and have a strong personal desire for a Lancaster Catholic education, but lack the financial resources necessary to pay tuition. Each year, a Dennis Cook Scholar is selected from among the members of the incoming freshman class.

Joanne Bauer '59 Scholarship was established by Joanne Bauer ‘59 to provide two annual scholarships towards tuition at Lancaster Catholic High School. The scholarship is awarded to students who are regular church attendees and active in parish life, maintain a “B” average and are involved in a minimum of one extra-curricular activity.

Mr. and Mrs. Owen Ryan Scholarship has been established by Mr. & Mrs. Owen Ryan to provide an annual scholarship for two students toward their tuition at Lancaster Catholic. Mr. & Mrs. Ryan are interested in making a difference in two student’s lives for four years Shirley A. Bielmyer Scholarship was founded in 2013 because Shirley by providing them a Lancaster Catholic education. They are committed was interested in making a difference in a student’s life by providing to their faith in sharing their treasures with our youth. them the resources necessary to obtain a Lancaster Catholic High School education. This four-year scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who has shown an aptitude for studies, a commitment to their parish and a strong desire to attend Lancaster Catholic, but lacks the financial resources needed to pay full tuition.

Tuition Scholarships Dr. Albert Schreder '45 and Ave Marie Schreder '50 Memorial Scholarship was established in February 2018 by the Schreder family to honor their parents, both alumni of Lancaster Catholic High School. This scholarship was established to provide tuition assistance to deserving students who lack the means to attend Lancaster Catholic High School. Both Dr. Al and Ave Marie loved and supported Lancaster Catholic their entire lives after graduation. Jeffrey F. Schoeplein '78 Tuition Scholarship has been established by Jeffrey F. Schoeplein class of 1978 to provide an annual scholarship towards tuition assistance at Lancaster Catholic. Jeff is interested in making a difference in a student’s life by helping them afford a Lancaster Catholic education. Catholic Education Foundation CEF is an independent nonprofit corporation committed primarily to providing tuition assistance to students interested in attending or currently attending Lancaster Deanery parish elementary schools and or Lancaster Catholic High School The Crusader Legacy Scholarship This scholarship helps ensure that the experiences and traditions of Lancaster Catholic High School are passed down through multiple generations of Crusaders within as many families as possible by keeping tuition affordable.

William C. Cunningham '66 Scholarship This scholarship has been established by the family of the late William Cunningham to provide a scholarship towards tuition assistance at Lancaster Catholic. The Cunningham Family is interested in making a difference in a student's life by helping them afford a Lancaster C atholic education. Faculty & Staff Tuition Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to deserving students who would otherwise be unable to attend this special school from current faculty and staff members. Robert K. Aichele Sr. Scholarship To honor the memory of Robert K Aichele, Sr., a Tuition Assistance Scholarship was established by his family to make a difference in a student’s life by helping them afford a Lancaster Catholic education. The scholarship in Bob’s name helps provide tuition assistance to Catholic students who are coming to Lancaster Catholic from one of our partner Catholic grade schools, whose families would otherwise be unable to afford an education at Lancaster Catholic High School. Mildred R. Kaetz Scholarship Fund was established through a bequest from Ms. Kaetz and underwrites financial assistance for deserving students at Lancaster Catholic High School.

Alycia M. (Gorlaski) Andros '07 Scholarship This scholarship has been established to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Alycia (Gorlaski) Andros '07 by providing one incoming freshman with a gift of a Lancaster Catholic education with a scholarship for each year the student lives out the "Profile of a Lancaster Catholic High School Graduate" while maintaining a B average. LCHS holds a special place in the hearts of Alycia's family & friends. The Our Lady of Grace Scholarship program was designed to provide our friends an opportunity to make a tuition assistance scholarship available for a student attending Lancaster Catholic. Named after their patron saint, these scholarships open the door of opportunity for a young person who is struggling financially to be able to experience this extraordinary education. Saint Rita’s Memorial Scholarship The Pennsylvania Catholic Beneficial League was organized in January of 1900, and consisted of members in "Minor" Councils throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. In the year 2010, due to declining memberships, the PCBL merged with the Polish Union of N.A. headquartered in Wilkes Barre, PA. Two minor Councils of women, St. Rita's and St. Mary's of Lancaster, decided to use their "investment" money in 2011 to establish a tuition scholarship to a female student with demonstrated financial need.

Graduation Awards J. Andrew Beslin ‘89 Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who demonstrates excellence in Mathematics and Physics, who has served the school through music and has had a positive impact in the lives of others. Catholic War Veterans Post 1306 Cross of Peace Graduation Award honors a deserving graduating senior who is furthering their education upon graduation. Anthony DiPaolo Award honors this longtime teacher and coach. Tony DiPaolo carries the honor of coaching his football teams to the most wins in LCHS history. He led the Crusaders to an overall record of 156-97-6 (61.4% winning percentage) during his two stints as LCHS coach, from 1965-1980 and 1993-2001. The Fund provides a scholarship for college to a graduating senior who has played four years of football at Catholic High and who has excelled academically, as well as athletically. Football Coaches Graduation Award is given out to the student-athlete who exemplifies the meaning of a true Crusader. Tony & Marianne Arcudi Leadership & Integrity Award is given to a graduating basketball player who displays leadership and integrity through athletics. Jeanette Gigl '39 Award is presented to a graduating senior who throughout their years at Lancaster Catholic exemplified a passion and commitment to excellence, kindness and faith. Anthony J. Haefner ‘88 Memorial Scholarship provides an annual monetary award to a graduating senior entering college to study environmental protection and/or animal rights. Michael A. Jones ‘93 Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a monetary award to a graduating senior whose character exemplifies the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The student must major in Animal Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Veterinary or Pre-Medical Sciences at a four year college or university.

The Joseph McCaskey '64 Award This award is presented to a graduating senior who has participated in the Fine and Performing Arts program at LCHS and is continuing as a music major in college. This scholarship was set up by Dr. Gary Gilroy ‘76 in honor of Mr. McCaskey. Gregory Pautler ‘80 Graduation Award was established to honor the life of Greg Pautler ‘80. Greg was a loving father, son, brother, husband, colleague, friend and LCHS alumnus who had an unending capacity for friendship and laughter and touched the lives of many. This graduation award helps a deserving student who will be majoring in Business Administration. Our Mother of Perpetual Help School Hecker & Gerhart Schloarship Fund Award recognizes a graduate of OMPH and LCHS who has demonstrated scholastic ability as well as commitment to school and community service. Rose Marie Strosser Lucks Memorial Fund provides a graduation & math award for deserving students graduating from Lancaster Catholic. The Rose Marie Strosser Lucks Memorial Fund honors a dedicated LCHS math teacher and 1970 graduate. Catherine Walker '97 Performing Arts Award is presented to a senior who best exemplifies the positive qualities of a performing artist: Willingness to share their God-given talents, genuine supportive interest in his or her fellow performers, unbridled curiosity and a cheerful disposition. Charles & Helen Woskowiak Music Graduation Award This award was designed by the daughter of Charles and Helen Woskowiak – Dr. Leona Frances Woskowiak. Her parents truly supported the arts and most especially music. In tribute to them, this graduation award has been established.
