Using a series of integrated vertical and horizontal planes, this house provides its user with 3 different spatial experiences. Front and center overlooking the Japan house pond is the public space. This room features a double height ceiling and a glass expanse that welcomes the one who ascends up the low hill from the path around the pond. In the rear of the project, slightly embedded behind the low knoll is the private space. This room is enclosed on 3 of its 4 openings features a lower ceiling to provide some discretion to the user. Finally, one may ascend a set of stair treads in the main space to a balcony. This balcony is cantilevered off the longer horizontal plane which the user may sit on and observe the arboretum 3

The origin of this project is an investigation into basic spatial relationships and materiality. Using arrangements such as “clustering”, “radial”, and “grid” we developed one of these concepts into an 800 square foot dwelling situated on a slope. Using the boulder concept, I developed a series of rooms lain about a central point and connected by smaller blocks that would serve as stairs and utility spaces. One would enter at the middle along the back of the house and enter at the level of the living room. From there the visitor can descent down to the kitchen and studio spaces or ascend up to the bedroom, which is the highest space. The bedroom has most of its walls closed and is turned away for privacy whereas the studio at the bottom is open and airy by comparison

For Fall Studio, students visited Robert Allerton Park, a property of the University, amd proposed an artist’s colony and public gathering space. Succesful projects would integrate with the landscape and offer sustainability, accessibility, and efficiency. I analyzed strong precedent within the dammed pools at the mansion and 4-H Lake, for example. Locating the dam here has the effect of framing the formal spaces within the new reflecting pool and the existing pool outside the mansion.

Along the visual axis of the deck another view is framed by an axis in traditional Allerton fashion. The spaces of the building are along the dam but raised up to provide for their distinct program. A series of connected units are linked to a gathering space by an exterior envelope that serves as a privacy screen and brings aesthetic cohesion to the complex. A guest unit is enhanced by Shoji screen ambiance and a filtered sunlight delivered by the exterior envelope. Residents may enjoy views of the forest from their units, or from the collaborative space with views of an Illinois landmark, the Allerton Mansion. The continuous path along the dam connect with existing trail infrastructure opposite the sunken garden.

This project concludes an investigation into various cultures and constructions.

Fusing core concepts from Frank Lloyd Wright’s ‘Child of the Sun’ campus with principles of contemporary African architecture that address climate change through the use of screens and overhangs. Wright’s Pfeiffer Memorial Chapel is defined by a single interior space that is structurally and aesthetically composed of 4 oversized concrete columns, which become space for mechanical systems as well. The main space in this project comes to be bound by a U-shaped diagram, with various auxiliary spaces surrounding it. This diagrams is clad in elements that address climate such as large overhangs, fins, and a large screen on the south facade. As this is an East African cultural center, the screen observes a Swahili ruin, one of the most prominent and culturally rich histories in Africa. I investigated various pieces of East African art as well as the work of contemporary architect David Adjaye for direction on these elements of my project. In combination with this are elements of my own design, including the appearance of a bookended block with various projecting terraces and cantileverfs, which reference my initial concept model.

This project combines elements of classical modernism with contemporary architecture.

The raised mass of the guest floors recalls the former, while the articulated louver envelope and green roof suggest a more contemporary finish. In plan and in concept I aim to be as concise as possible to create a clear, logical flow of people and things throughout the building. Single corridors and a condensed core simplify the program of the building. This project is supported physically by a simple grid of slender concrete columns that can be embedded in the walls of the guest rooms, and exposed on the public mezzanine and lobby to create an architectural promenade.

The angled louver envelope is calculated to maximize winter sun exposure and maximize heat gain while rejecting summer sun. A roof deck and restaurant seek to connect with the emergent park project across the street as well as engage with the community. Prime Downtown location is within a few minutes walk to some of the best culinary destinations in the area, and only slightly adjunct from the University itself, can cater to both businessmen and scholars.
