Witnessing a Gray Whale spout directly in front of him at age 14 during a family vacation to Laguna Beach had Wyland hooked. It was that defining moment that propelled him to return to Laguna five years later to pursue his passion for art and the ocean.

Wyland considers his art a hobby which got out of control.

He’s always held the belief that if you work hard, with integrity, and remember to give back, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. In the early days selling paintings, murals, or custom painted vans was his only source of income.

In 1978, Wyland Galleries was launched as a studio/gallery in Laguna Canyon where, to this day, his signature Humpback mural stares back at daily motorists. In 1979 he joined the Sawdust Festival and was named “Artist of the Year” where he continued to exhibit for the next 13 years. As his career began to tidal wave, he purchased the building at 509 South Coast Hwy. and worked diligently at building his brand worldwide.

Timing definitely played a key role in his success as the environmental movement gained traction.

With over 400,000 avid collectors in 100 countries including all 50 States, his wisdom and experience will soon be released and free to download in his new book titled “Don’t Be A Starving Artist”.

His accolades are numerous, but what he’s most proud of is the Wyland World Water Pledge encouraging people to conserve water as well as the Wyland Foundation’s mission to Preserve Art Education in America.
