PRESENTATION EVENING On Thursday 8th December LBTS held its annual Presentation Evening in the gym. Over 240 students received prizes from our special guest Kemi Folarin. After leaving LBTS and gaining a degree Kemi founded ‘Young People Matter’ which is a leading local childcare charity.

Prizes were awarded in each subject and in each year group for the best grade and best effort. In addition prizes were awarded for:  Contribution to the year group  Reading

The event ended with our school song ‘You can get it if you really want it’ being played through the speakers. A timely reminder that hard work is required for success.

TEAM BUILDING Year 7 students recently had an excellent time at their team-building trip to a bowling centre in Surrey Quays. One student said, “It’s been great to get to know everyone in my form” and all students agreed that they felt more confident working together after the trip.

STUDENT ACTION GROUP (STAG) This year the Year 7 STAG have been leading tutor time activities on organisation and are helping their fellow students to “excel past our limits”.

The STAG have regular meetings with Miss Capper to plan their activities and have also met with Mr Phillips so that they can feedback their views.

HOUSE POINTS

Congratulations to 7T who were the tutor group with the most House Points for their first term at LBTS, achieving a huge 18,216 points.

House Points are given for amazing answers, excellent classwork or home learning, being helpful or demonstrating excellent effort.

SE1 United are working with a group of students, using educational games and activities, to support students speaking out. Feedback from students has been very positive with one student saying, “I wish we could stay for longer –I really enjoy the activities!”

FOREST SCHOOL A group of Year 7 and 8 students are attending Forest School every other week. They have a designated base in the forest which acts as their outdoor classroom. At each session they develop their ability to cope positively with working outdoors whilst completing a challenge!

8J and 8R recently completed their Future Frontiers Careers Programme at the end of December. At the graduation ceremony the students received a certificate and their coaches said a few words about the work each student carried out. In the final two sessions students were given the opportunity to call some really exciting people. For example Year 8 students aspiring to be football coaches got to talk to a professional international scout. Throughout the course the students gained a great insight into their future career path. 8K and 8O will be starting their Future Frontiers Careers Programme in February.

WORK OF THE MONTH 8 Descartes recently showed everyone just how much work they put into their Maths completing, on average, over 3 hours more home learning than students from any other class. In addition Amena was awarded Work of the Month for her individual efforts in extra curricular Maths.

TEAM UP

STUDENT ACTION GROUP (STAG) The Year 9 STAG group recently presented an excellent assembly on bullying and are planning further assemblies on revision, home learning and identity this term.

The first Year 9 Team Up after school tuition programme was completed by Year 9 before Christmas. Feedback showed all made excellent progress from the extra tuition the programme offered and that the course was very well attended.

ANTI BULLYING COORDINATORS (ABCs) The Year 9 ABCs have started to work with the Head Boy and Head Girl to support those who feel they could be victims of bullying. They will be leading a ‘drop in’ and a number of assemblies.

Football Beyond Borders is a study skills and football programme for Year 9. The Year 9 participants have shown amazing teamwork completing practical tasks such as commentating on football footage which have led to improvements in literacy and overall communication skills. They have also developed their football skills too!

OUTWARD BOUND TRUST Year 10 recently took part in work based skills sessions with the Outward Bound Trust. Here you can see the boys group on top of the second highest peak in England in the Lake District.

They showed incredible resilience to reach this point, with a tricky descent to deal with afterwards. They climbed through heavy cloud, rain and wind to reach the top before going back down to cook their own dinner and pitch camp.

The girls did the same climb but also had to climb up a waterfall in freezing water to reach their camp!

Rene Carayol recently visited Year 10 to speak about his book called ‘Spikes’. He challenged students to think about what they are excellent at and to try and improve on this to make themselves unstoppable!

BUILDING DEVELOPMENT!

A group of students recently visited the building development on the Albert Embankment. They toured 3 sites and were shown how the skills they were using in school would apply directly to so many roles within property development from being an architect to an engineer.

GCSE PREPARATION Last term Year 11 students completed their GCSE mock exams. This gave the students a realistic indication of the grades they could achieve in their upcoming GCSE exams. In the lead up to the exams students participated in tutoring during registration and many gave up time after school to tutor each other. This was supported by a series of revision workshops and conferences.

PROM PREPARATION The Year 11 prefects and STAG have come together to form this year’s prom committee. This is an opportunity for Year 11 to contribute to the memorable evening in July.

Prom Date: Thursday 6th July 2017 We look forward to welcoming the Year 11 students and their families so put the date in your diary now!

LADDER TO LAW Last half term a group of Year 11 students attended a Ladder to Law event, hosted by Hogan Lovell’s a leading law company. The event involved students attending various seminars delivered by partners of the law firm. In addition there was an opportunity for students to meet one-to-one with law students to ask them for advice and guidance on the best routes into a career in law.

THE MERCERS’ SCHOOL ENTERPRISE LBTS6 students were recently victorious in the Mercers’ School Enterprise Competition. The objective was to gain backing for a new company that would be commercially successful. Three months of hard work culminated in the students presenting their idea, Dragons’ Den style, to a large group of business entrepreneurs.

The group overcame stiff opposition from a range of state and private schools to win!

All of our vocational students recently visited the Skills London event at the ExCel Centre. Skills London is London’s biggest jobs and careers event for young people and it gave our students a chance to discover careers through interactive, inspirational activities and demonstrations.

Since the start of the academic year, Year 13 have been progressing with their university applications. 75 LBTS6 students have applied to university so far with a number receiving unconditional offers. Our high achieving students have applied for numerous top tier, Russell Group, universities including Oxbridge and medicine applications.

6th FORM MATHS AWARDS A huge congratulations to five Year 13 students; Caroline, Salad, Imran, August and Jie for receiving a ‘Khan Foundation Award’ for achieving extremely high AS Maths grades at the end of Year 12. This national award rewards students for their hard work and dedication in achieving academic excellence.

House News DODGEBALL Last term all year groups took part in the House Dodgeball competition. Students who took part were awarded certificates and a sweet surprise at their recent House Assemblies!

FUNDRAISING FOR HOUSE CHARITIES Last half term students took part in a number of House activities including a Sponsored Run, Christmas Carolling and designing and selling Christmas Cards to fundraise for their House Charities. The students raised a staggering ÂŁ750! The Year 7 and 8 Bears and Crocs will undertake their Sponsored Run in mid February so this total will only get higher!

House News HOUSE CAPTAIN TEAM BUILDING Last term the House Captains attended Leadership Training at a bowling alley where they learnt to work together as a team to defeat the opposition. They also learnt how to work together to carry out their duties as House Captains including how to create and build teams for upcoming competitions.

HOUSE DAY Year 7 and 8 students recently took part in a House Day which involved the Crocs and Bears undertaking Literacy Activities and the Sharks and Lions undertaking Charity activities.

Literacy Day involved the students reading a short book and then designing their own comic books inspired by it. Outstanding comics were produced by the Year 7 and 8 students with vouchers and certificates being awarded for the best work in each year group.

Charity Day included speakers from the House Charities coming into school to inform students how their fundraising is making a difference. Students then created projects which they pitched to the LBTS Dragons Den for their chance to run their project to fundraise money for their House Charity. Students also took part in a Sponsored Run.

House Rewards and Cashing in Students House Point totals are displayed on the House Reward board near the entrance to Music.

500 House Points is worth a ÂŁ5 voucher. Rules on how to cash in and the days different year groups can cash in are displayed on the board.

At the end of the House Year the winning House, the House with the most House Points, will attend a reward trip to Thorpe Park! Students in the winning House must have 500+ House Points to go!

The Access Project supports students in years 10-13 to get places at top universities, through providing one-to-one tuition and mentoring in school.

Well done to all the students on The Access Project for showing great commitment to their tutorials this year. So far 254 hours of one-to-one tutorials have been given to Access Project students at Lilian Baylis this academic year all from graduates of top universities who are sharing their academic expertise. Students are already seeing the benefits in the classroom and the impact on their grades.

A special congratulations to Dehjon of Year 11 and Marco of Year 13 who have received this term's Attendance Award for their outstanding commitment to tutorials and for being exemplary students on the Access Project.

This half term, Year 10 and 11 students on the project will be heading to some top universities. Year 11 students will visit Goldsmiths and will meet students on the Access Project from across London. Meanwhile Year 10 students will have the chance to find out about life at one of the best universities in the world, Cambridge University, where they will meet current students and attend lectures from Cambridge Professors.

CRICKET Cricket is really taking off at LBTS with 26 students across Year 7 and 8 turning up for cricket practice every Thursday. The Year 7 and 8 boys’ cricket team recently played an 8-a-side tournament at the Oval and performed extremely well. They have also entered a cricket league which is being hosted at LBTS in the sports hall. The first fixture for the boys was against Charter and they excelled themselves against difficult opposition.

The Year 7 and 8 girls cricket team recently had their first fixture against Southfields which they won by 38 runs. The interest is so strong from the girls that we have been able to field 2 teams in this competition!

Many of the boys and girls have also been invited to the London Youth Games trial for the Lambeth cricket team and we wait to see how many make the final squad.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Our food students have had a busy start to the year. The Year 7 students have been learning about nutrition and how to cook healthy meals whilst our Year 8 students have been studying different dietary requirements and how to adapt meals for specific groups of people. Meanwhile Year 9 students have just finished a unit on meat and protein, and are now learning about professional skills within a kitchen.

They have also been practising presenting dishes to a restaurant standard and the salads that they made are pictured above. Year 10 students are studying the science of food and are looking at methods of aeration. They have also been practising for their GCSEs and have been making lots of progress.

Lastly our Year 11 students have completed three units of their course and are currently planning a two course meal which they will cook in a timed assessed practical.

SCIENCE MUSEUM Our Year 9 students recently went to the Science Museum where they explored the science of materials. They were also able to build and test electrical systems ranging from electrical grids to rail networks and baggage handling systems. The visit was part of our programme to ensure that the science we teach in the classroom is related to real life examples.

This year, Year 7 and 8 students have been introduced to how designers come up with creative and original ideas, whilst Year 7 have focused on using plastic and Year 8 have focused on wood as their main material when making. Meanwhile Year 9 students came up with creative ideas for a phone/Mp3 docking stand and have modelled these brilliantly in 3D. Year 10 Engineering and Product Design students have both made a fantastic start to their coursework whilst Year 11 have been covering exam theory and practising for their up-coming exam units.

A NIGHT AT THE BALLET The London Russian Ballet School recently invited LBTS to a night at the ballet at Sadler’s Wells theatre.

Many of the students had not seen a ballet before and all were blown away by the performance. The London Russian Ballet School presented many different ballets which showed the wide variety of styles of ballet as well as the dedication required to perform at such a high level.

VISIT TO HATFIELD HOUSE Our Art students recently visited Hatfield House to see the glass sculpture they produced for the Great Fire of London Project. The students really enjoyed going around the House after lunch and the talk on glass making.

WWI TOUR As part of the A Level History course some of our A level Historians recently went on a World War One commemorative tour. They were able to see the main historical sites of World War One and get a greater understanding of what life would have been like for those involved. Here the students can be seen attending The Last Post ceremony.

MATHEMATICS Got a problem? Let our mathematicians solve it!

2017 is the year that the GCSE examinations in Maths change and our Year 11 students are having to work exceedingly hard to prepare for these more challenging examinations.

One key difference between the old and the new GCSE is problem solving and the whole Maths curriculum has been rewritten to address this. Right from Year 7 students visit and revisit this topic – practice really does make perfect and we at LBTS provide plenty of that.

One very important way that students can practise is through the use of Hegarty Maths. This is an online site which the Maths department uses for home learning and it is a really effective means of students showing what they are able to do independently. We place great emphasis on students doing regular home learning and greatly appreciate parental support with this.

Hegarty Maths is use by hundreds of schools across England and we are very proud to be part of a project that will develop it to ensure our students get the most benefit from using it.

WCIT - WOMEN IN TECH EVENT Last term a group of our most creative female Computer Science students were invited to attend the WCIT (Worshipful Company of Information Technologists) ‘Women in Tech Event’. At the event our students were given the opportunity to meet highly successful and knowledgeable women in the Information Technology industry.

The students were inspired by the amazing stories and experiences that the women shared with them. The students were further encouraged by the opportunity to engage with the industry professionals by asking questions on how they too can achieve in the Technology sector.

WINTER CONCERT This year's Winter Concert was one of our best yet. Our students put in an outstanding effort throughout the Autumn term to produce a show packed full of talented performers.

NEW YEAR NEW EXAMS 2017 is the year that the GCSE examinations in English Language and Literature change and our Year 11 students are having to work very hard to prepare for these more challenging examinations.

One major change to the GCSE Literature examination is that they are all ‘closed book’. This means students can no longer take a copy of the text into the exam with them and instead have to learn quotes off by heart – no easy task!

There are 15 poems, a Shakespearean play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, a 20th century play - ‘An Inspector Calls’ and a 19th century novel - ‘The Sign of the Four’ or ‘Jane Eyre’ to learn. To help students with this the school has created three quotation walls on the three different floors of LBTS so that students are constantly reminded of the most important quotes from these works and will hopefully be able to recall them in the exam!

Naturally students will also be reviewing these texts in lessons and as part of their home learning, but the quotation walls are a rather large reminder of what needs to be learnt and will also be useful for Year 10 who will be studying the same texts for their GCSEs in 2018.

Drop in with Alice YOUNG CARERS DROP IN Miss Stuck’s Office Thursdays 12:25 – 13.05 Alice Dias, Young Carers’ School Project Officer, comes into the school once a week to do a drop in for young carers who would like to meet her. All students who attend the school are welcome to go and see Alice to get information, advice and support while being a young carer.

Carers’ Hub, Young Carers’ Project, also offers one to one tuition support and one to one emotional support for those that may need it. This organisation also has social events for young carers to attend. Young carers can also be sign posted to the services that would benefit them.

Being a young carer is nothing to be embarrassed about, and there is always someone you can speak to if you need to.

That’s about one in twelve secondary aged pupils who are young carers.

Young carers are children under 18 with caring responsibilities, and their rights to be assessed come mostly from the Children Act 1989 and the Children and Families Act 2014. If there is an adult being looked after, then the local council has a duty to consider whether there are any children involved in providing care, and if so, what the impact is on that child.

YOUNG CARERS Who are young carers? Young carers are children and young people under 18 years old that provide regular and ongoing care to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances. The tasks and level of caring undertaken by young carers can vary according to the nature of the illness or disability, the level and frequency of need for care and the structure of the family as a whole.

IMPACT OF CARING ON YOUNG PEOPLE  Physical health: often severely affected by caring through the night, repeatedly lifting a heavy

adult, poor diet and lack of sleep.  Emotional wellbeing: stress, tiredness and mental ill health are common for young carers.  Isolation: feeling different or isolated from their peers, limited opportunities for socialisation, bully-

ing and harassment. More than two out of three young carers are bullied at school.  Unstable environment: traumatic life changes such as bereavement, family break-up, losing in-

come and housing, or seeing the effects of an illness or addiction.
