2012 APOCALYPSE It has been predicted that our world will end on 21st December 2012. With this theory being a key topic of discussion for what the year 2012 brings; it is no surprise that it has influenced this spring / summers trends in fashion. Scientific evidence, a variety of prophesies and religious scriptures all contribute to indicating the potential apocalypse in 2012. The exact date (21st December 2012) has been pinpointed through the interpretation of the Mayan calendar. To our knowledge, the Mayans created seventeen calendars, and had a history of tracking solstices. The Long Count 5,125-year cycle calendar stops on 21st December; the Mayans came to the conclusion that this next intersection (there was a previous one in August 3114 B.C. which they believed symbolised the ‘moment of creation’) would be some kind of ending of a cycle. With this information, the trends of spring / summer 2012 are significantly different from your standard summer attire. With this being potentially the last spring / summer on earth, the direction of which each sub-trend takes, differs significantly, as there are an array of different views on how these theories are perceived. With heavy influences coming from the ideas of protection, survival and living life to the full, the three trends presented in this book all offer an individual responce to the idea of potential apocalypse. The name of the first trend is ‘fortification’. It is a look that reflects the need for protection in the months before the potential apocalypse. Armour inspired pieces are key items for this trend, along with gladiator sandals and mesh type materials. Anything goes is a trend developed to demonstrate the saying “seize the day”, through fashion. With but a few months to live, the trend is a non-trend, the idea being to wear whatever, be bright, be bold, be yourself! Go green is based upon our panic to save the planet in a time of desperation. The trend involves fashion items that mimic nature. Tulip skirts, leafy shapes, floral patterns, made in organic materials used to help save our planet!

FORTIFICATION For many people the initial response to the end of the world theories may be fear. We know that in order to escape death, protection is required. The inspiration for this trend came from the study of the ways in which different warriors, such as gladiators and soldiers from different periods protect themselves. Heavily influenced by the Roman gladiator style, and medieval armour, metallic’s, in the context of both colour and texture, are a key feature for this seasons trend. Chain mail inspired materials; heavily structured shapes and dull colours portray the intention of fortification accurately, and create an edgy yet meaningful style. Not only does this trend create a sense of safety and security through the fabrics and structure of the garments, it also forms a modern and extremely stylish look that makes for one of the key trends of spring / summer 2012. The fabrics consist of leather, chain, mesh and latex. Though these are not generally considered summery materials – they are essential for needs of protection in 2012; and are cut, crafted and adapted in a way to make wearable and cool for the summer. Focus remains of the structure, shape and essentially function of the garments, rather than the colour and pattern, as that is what this trend is all about.

Leather, fishnet and latex are the key fabrics for this trend.

The garments are designed in a way so that these materials are wearable for the spring / summer seasons. Gladiator sandals, armour like jewelry and accessories, along with chain and metal garments (featured on opposite page) are all key pieces for this trend. Through the collaboration of the fabrics and cuts, not only is ultimate protection being provided, but an edgy style that is exactly on trend.

The trend anything goes is primarily about people being themselves. In what could be the ultimate spring / summer season, the importance of living in the moment is crucial. Eccentric patterns and bright colours effectively echo the quote “the only moment that truly exists is now”, Eckhart Tolle. The idea behind this trend essentially, is that is it a non-trend. Breaking away from the general direction something tends to move in, is the breaking of a trend. “Anything goes” describes this perfectly, as the trend is literally that anything goes. Whether your preferred style is indie, boho, gothic, preppy, glamorous, chic or casual – you are on trend! It offers complete freedom; fabrics of any kind, patterns and colours of any intensity, inspiration taken from literally anything, all go when anything goes. The message behind this trend is to do what you want, wear what you want, live for the moment, live for yourself! Carefree shapes, colours, patterns, materials and accessories are all part of the trend, the key is to have a carefree attitude, live for the now!

Animal prints and textures, polka dots, stripes, bright colours and tie-dye are only some of the key elements to anything goes. To name every material and colour would be simply impossibly as it would include pretty much everything!

The key pieces display some crazy items from which inspiration to be different should be taken. For colours; the brighter the better, and for materials; the more different they are, the more desirable! Use everything as inspiration and rule out nothing!

GO GREEN The “Go Green trend is highly influenced by, and heavily reflects the desperation of the human race in their final efforts to become environmentally friendly and save our planet. For years we have been encouraged to reduce our carbon footprint, recycle, save energy, and generally protect our planet and reduce the ways in which human activity affects it. With the predictions that the world is to end in December 2012, it is essential that we all come together in a final effort to save our earth, which is what this trend demonstrates. The nature inspired garments (made largely from organic materials) that feature in this trend mimic the earths beauty. Tulip shaped skirts, block wooden wedges, and long floaty gowns are some of the key pieces. Materials such as chiffon, silk, and organic play a significant role in the trend. Soft silks mimic the touch of a delicate petal, while organic materials contribute to saving our planet by reducing our ecological footprint. Go green is both a beautiful and beneficial trend, help attempt to undo some of the damage and destruction we have caused to our planet, while looking fashionable and on-trend at the same time!

Organic cotton is a key material for this trend as it is an eco-friendly material, contributing to saving our planet.

Silk and chiffon both resemble elements of nature. They are weightless materials for the summer seasons, which look and feel luxurious. Key pieces include wooden wedges, long chiffon gowns in floral colours, plant imitating jewelry and accessories, and simple garments with structure that is obviously influenced by nature, like the tulip shaped skirt.
