THE WORKING ROAD LESS TRAVELLED Kate Matheson

I

t’s absolutely amazing how many paths we can take within the course of a work lifetime, or, for that matter, within the course of a lifetime full stop.

What I should have realised much earlier than I did is this. If your brain is programmed in HD colour, it is well nigh impossible to work in black and white.

Compared to our grandparents, or even our parents, we have the ability to work across industries, across sectors, to be in corporate, to be entrepreneurs, to move countries... the sky is the limit.

This means the opportunity to find the place which is truly ours is similarly expanded, and it may take a while, but generally, most of us are lucky enough to get there in the end.

So eventually I took the divergent road, the one less travelled, and struck out into a field which I had no real experience in, but that I knew in my heart was where I belonged. I knew that I was, in essence, a writer, and that I needed to be writing, in some form or another. I knew that I was a total geek girl.

I often think, in work terms, of the Robert Frost poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. For a long time, I tried to take the path of least contention, I suppose would be the best way to put it; to fit within the corporate mould, to use my crayons firmly between the lines.

I also knew in my heart, even if at that stage I didn’t have the technical know-how to backup my instincts, that the world of online design, and development, and the mysterious ways of SEO and CSS and HTML and Javascript had a strange poetry all of their own, and that I could make them sing.
