Grußwort Es ist uns eine besondere Freude, die Ausstellung Francesco Clemente. Palimpsest in der Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt zu unterstützen. Francesco Clemente ist ein Weltbürger: Er arbeitet und lebt abwechselnd in New York, Indien und Italien. In seinen Werken verschmelzen Einflüsse, Weltanschauungen und Philosophien von Ost und West, Gegenwart und Vergangenheit, Spiritualität und Körperlichkeit.

Global agieren und grenzüberschreitend im Team zusammenarbeiten – dieser Anspruch der Deutschen Bank und der Deutsche Bank Stiftung ist im Bereich der bildenden Kunst und der Musik nicht zuletzt durch die internationalen Projekte schon seit langer Zeit Wirklichkeit.

We take special pleasure in supporting the exhibition Francesco Clemente. Palimpsest at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Francesco Clemente is a citizen of the world, who lives and works in New York, India and Italy. Influences, world views and philosophies from East and West, past and present, spirituality and sensuality, all flow together in his works.

Francesco Clemente hat über Jahrzehnte ein komplexes, vielschichtiges Gesamtwerk geschaffen, welches sich mit großer Authentizität und tiefer schöpferischer Energie auf sensibelste, poetische Weise mit den Ambivalenzen, Möglichkeiten, Freuden, Abgründen und Sehnsüchten der individuellen menschlichen Existenz befasst. In einer Zeit, in der wir oftmals die Aufgabe der zeitgenössischen Kunst im politisch-dokumentarischen Aktivismus, in sozio-kultureller Diskursivität, in institutioneller Kritik und multimedialer Reflexion sehen, stellt dieses beeindruckende Œuvre einen vermeintlichen Anachronismus, nein vielmehr, eine Zeitlosigkeit des künstlerischen Handelns dar.

To act on a global scale and work as a team in crossing borders are what Deutsche Bank and the Deutsche Bank Stiftung aspire to. They have been doing this for many years now in the field of visual arts and music, not least in the form of international projects. With our involvement, we aim to help ensure that in future our world retains its wealth of creative and artistic talent – a potential that inspires us and the hopefully many exhibition visitors.

I am therefore delighted that Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt has spared no effort in assembling works by Clemente from the last 30 years, including the complete watercolor series A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows, which has never been shown before in Europe. The show is the most comprehensive solo exhibition of this outstanding artist’s work in Germany to date.

The Deutsche Bank Stiftung has been following this ambitious project with great interest and is glad to contribute to its success.

Contemporary art brings people closer together, into discussion with one another. It creates an inexhaustible potential for ideas, which we seek to make available to a broader public with our involvement. Unsere Ausstellung bedeutender Werke von Francesco Clemente der letzten 30 Jahre trägt den Titel Palimpsest – ein Begriff, der die vielschichtigen Aspekte von Clementes Arbeit und Werk gut beschreibt. Ein Palimpsest ist ein Schriftstück, auf dem nach Abschabung eines früheren Textes geschrieben worden ist. Besonders im Mittelalter, in dem Pergament sehr kostbar war, wurde diese Technik bei antiken Schriftstücken häufig angewandt. Viele antike und mittelalterliche Texte sind daher nur als „Schrift unter der Schrift“ lückenhaft überliefert.

Die seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Palimpsestieren bezeichnete Technik ist gängige Metapher für geistige und kreative Prozesse. Francesco Clemente schöpft aus einer Vielzahl von zeitlosen Symbolen, Mythen, Kulturen und Philosophien. Er legt selbst Spuren, ebenso wie er wiederum Spuren freilegt. Er überlagert und fragmentiert, um Neues zu schaffen, lässt verschwinden, um anderes hervorzuheben – im optischen als auch inhaltlichen Sinne – ein Archäologe des Bewusstseins. Der Künstler begann seine Karriere in einer Zeit des individuellen Strebens nach Bewusstseinsveränderung und -erweiterung. Bis heute reist er immer wieder nach Indien, beschäftigt sich ausführlich mit religiösen und spirituellen Traditionen und Schriftstücken des Hinduismus und anderer außereuropäischer Kulturen. Mit seiner einzigartigen, sensiblen und virtuosen Formensprache geht Clemente seinen ganz eigenen Weg der Bewusstseinserweiterung und eröffnet diesen über seine Arbeiten auch dem Betrachter. Er schafft ein weites künstlerisches Panorama des kollektiven und individuellen Gedächtnisses.

So stellt Clemente den Besuchern der Schirn unter dem Titel A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows drei schriftrollenähnliche Aquarelle von achtzehn Metern Länge und nahezu zwei Metern Höhe gegenüber. Sie erscheinen wie überdimensionale, mächtige Palimpseste des menschlichen Geistes, Landschaften der geistigen Evolution. Die Technik der Ausradierung, der Auswaschung und Überlagerung wird hier ganz offensichtlich. Mit seinem Pinsel tilgt und verändert Clemente nicht nur die Oberfläche des Papiers, zart und vorsichtig erscheint ein neues Bild. Neben dieser Werkgruppe präsentiert er eine Reihe abstrakter und speziell für die Schirn entworfener Fotografien, die zu einer monumentalen Wandtapete zusammengefügt

werden. Sie zeigen Fragmente von Objekten, Bildern und Gemälden aus seinem New Yorker Studio, die sich dort über Jahrzehnte angesammelt haben, und sind unmittelbare, visuelle Niederschriften des Entstehungsortes und damit des Ursprungs der präsentierten Arbeiten.

Der Betrachter wird hier wiederum mit einer Überblendung und Verschachtelung konfrontiert.

Weitere 23 Schlüsselwerke aus Clementes Schaffen der letzten mehr als 30 Jahre runden die Ausstellung ab. Diese offenbaren eindrücklich die ganz besondere, eigendynamische Kontinuität innerhalb seiner Arbeit. Mit dieser „history of consciousness“, wie er sie nennt, erschafft er gleichsam eine neue Kategorie des Historienbildes.

Mein großer Dank gilt zuallererst Francesco Clemente für sein Vertrauen in die Zusammenarbeit mit der Schirn wie auch für seine Begeisterung und sein großes Engagement, mit dem er diese Ausstellung von Anfang an begleitet hat. Es war für alle Beteiligten eine großartige Erfahrung, gemeinsam mit dem Künstler und seinem eindrucksvollen Werk arbeiten zu können, und ich danke Francesco, dass er sich dem Projekt so intensiv gewidmet hat. Meine erste einschneidende Auseinandersetzung mit dem außergewöhnlichen Werk Clementes ergab sich in New York, während meiner Arbeitszeit am Guggenheim Museum. 1999 eröffnete er dort als der jüngste lebende Künstler eine große Retrospektive. Über Jahre blieb ich dem faszinierenden Werk des italienischen Künstlers verbunden, doch ergab sich nicht sofort die Gelegenheit einer direkten Zusammenarbeit. Umso mehr freut es mich, dass wir nun nach mehrjähriger Vorbereitungszeit und intensiven Gesprächen über Art und Zusammenstellung einer solchen Ausstellung ein ganz besonderes Projekt mit Clemente in der Schirn zeigen können, darunter erstmals in Europa die komplette Serie seiner spektakulären, großformatigen Rainbows-Aquarelle, gemeinsam mit einer Auswahl seiner wichtigsten Gemälde und Pastelle.

Nur durch verlässliche und engagierte Förderung und Unterstützung ist es uns möglich, ambitionierte Projekte wie dieses in der Schirn zu realisieren. Daher möchte ich mich sehr herzlich bei der Deutsche Bank Stiftung bedanken, die als Förderer diese Ausstellung begleitet.

Mein persönlicher Dank gilt insbesondere dem Stiftungsvorstand unter dem Vorsitz von Dr. Tessen von Heydebreck und Michael Münch als stellvertretendem Vorsitzenden der Deutsche Bank Stiftung. Für diesen Katalog hat Clemente eine Auswahl der schönsten und wichtigsten Gedichte und Prosatexte zu seinen Werken zusammengestellt, eindrucksvolle Zeugnisse der gegenseitigen künstlerischen Inspiration. Für die Zustimmung zum Abdruck der Texte danke ich ganz besonders dem Schriftsteller und Literatur-Nobelpreisträger Derek Walcott und dem Schriftsteller Peter Handke sowie allen übrigen Rechteinhabern.

Ganz besonderer Dank geht auch an die Kuratorin Pamela Kort. Wie bei allen ihren Projekten für die Schirn hat sie sich auch bei dieser Ausstellung wieder zuverlässig und mit höchstem Engagement der Realisierung gewidmet. Es ist ihr zu verdanken, dass wir diese qualitätvolle Auswahl von Werken hier in der Schirn präsentieren können. Wesentlich unterstützt wurde die Bereitstellung der Exponate sowohl von Francesco Clemente, aus dessen Besitz die überwiegende Anzahl der Leihgaben stammt, als auch von Privatleihgebern aus Europa und den USA, deren Vertrauen und Bereitschaft, wichtige und bedeutende Werke ihres Bestandes

Die Ausstellungsarchitektur entwickelten Bill Katz und Pamela Kort gemeinsam mit Francesco Clemente. Die Ausstellungsgrafik wurde wieder hervorragend von der Agentur ENORM und insbesondere Stefan Kaulbersch umgesetzt. Ihnen allen möchte ich für Ihre Arbeit danken.

Mein Dank geht wie immer auch an die Stadt Frankfurt und insbesondere, stellvertretend für alle Entscheidungsträger, an die Oberbürgermeisterin Petra Roth und den Kulturdezernenten Felix Semmelroth. Foreword For decades Francesco Clemente has been producing a complex, multi-layered body of work of great authenticity and profound creative energy. With a poetic, extremely sensitive approach, he explores the ambivalences, opportunities, joys, despairs and desires of individual human existence. At a time when we often view the task of contemporary art in terms of politicaldocumentary activism, socio-cultural discourse, institutional criticism and multimedia reflection, this artist’s impressive œuvre, more than a putative anachronism, represents the timelessness of artistic craft.

Our exhibition of significant works by Francesco Clemente from the last 30 years is called Palimpsest – a term which well describes the multi-layered aspects of his craft and work. A palimpsest is a document which can be rewritten by scraping away an existing text. This technique was especially used with ancient documents during the Middle Ages, when parchment was very expensive. Many ancient and medieval texts have therefore only survived as a kind of patchwork, as “writing beneath the writing”. The technique, which has been known as palimpsesting since the mid-19th century, is an accepted metaphor for intellectual and creative processes. Francesco Clemente draws on a myriad of timeless symbols, myths, cultures and philosophies. In the process of uncovering a trail, he leaves behind a trail of his own, overlapping and fragmenting in order to create something new, erasing in order to underscore, in terms of both appearance and content. He is an archaeologist of consciousness. The artist began his career at a point in his life when he was striving to alter and expand his own consciousness. He continues to travel to India today and spends a great deal of time studying religious and spiritual traditions and writings from Hinduism and other non-European cultures. With his unique, sensitive, and virtuoso formal language evident in his works, Clemente charts his own path of consciousness expansion for the observer. In so doing, he creates a wide artistic panorama of collective and individual memory.

For instance, in a work entitled A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows, Clemente confronts the viewer with three 18-meter-long, almost two-meter-high, scroll-like watercolors. They look like vast, majestic palimpsests of the human spirit, landscapes of spiritual evolution. The technique of erasing, washing out and overlapping is obvious here. By erasing and altering with his paintbrush, Clemente gently and cautiously coaxes out a new picture from the surface of the paper. In addition to this work he presents a series of abstract photographs assembled into a giant wallpaper designed especially for the Schirn. They show fragments of objects, pictures and paintings accumulated in his New York studio over decades, forming the immediate, visual minutes of the place where they were created, thereby bearing witness to the origin of the works on exhibit. The viewer is once again confronted with an overlapping and nesting process. An additional 23 key works from the last 30 years round out the exhibition. These reveal explicitly the very special continuity and self-dynamic within his work. With this “history of consciousness”, as he calls it, he has, so to speak, created a new kind of historical picture.

First and foremost I want to thank Francesco Clemente for his trust in this collaboration with the Schirn, as well as for his enthusiasm which he displayed from the very start. It was a great experience for everyone involved to be able to work with the artist and his impressive œuvre. I would like to thank Francesco for his extreme dedication to the project. My first key encounter with Clemente’s unusual works was in New York, while I was working at the Guggenheim Museum. As the youngest living artist to exhibit at the Guggenheim, he had opened a large retrospective there in 1999. While I continued to be fascinated by his work for years, no opportunity for direct collaboration presented itself. I am all the more delighted that now, after several years of preparatory work and intensive discussions about the type and composition of this kind of exhibition, we are able show a very special project with Clemente at the Schirn, including the complete series of his spectacular, large-format Rainbows watercolors, which have never before been exhibited in Europe, together with a selection of his most important paintings and pastels.

I would also like to thank his assistant, Ricardo Kugelmas, for his excellent collaboration and valuable support during all stages of the project. As an artist who explores language particularly intensively, Francesco Clemente has worked with poets and writers. He has illustrated poems by Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, and Peter Handke, among others, and conversely poems have been written on Clemente’s works. Clemente selected some of the most beautiful and important poems and prose texts on his work for this catalog as impressive witnesses of the mutual artistic inspiration. I would especially like to thank the writer and Nobel Prize in Literature-winner Derek Walcott and writer Peter Handke as well as all other copyright holders for their permission to print the texts.

Another special thank you must go to the curator Pamela Kort. As with all her projects for the Schirn, her reliability and incredible commitment ensured the successful realization of the exhibition. It is due to her efforts that we are able to present a selection of such quality here at the Schirn. Eine Bekehrung Derek Walcott

I Als ich gebeten wurde, über Clemente zu schreiben, reagierte ich sofort mit Ablehnung, da mich seine Arbeit eher irritierte als begeisterte. Aber die Vorstellung reizte mich doch, und mein bisheriges Urteil bedurfte einer Neubewertung. Man hatte mir etwa 2,5 cm hohe Reproduktionen seiner Serie Eine Geschichte des Herzens in drei Regenbogen geschickt (der Titel rief ein leicht verächtliches Schaudern hervor) und das Format der Arbeiten erschien unglaublich – 1,85 m mal 3,65 m – und das als Aquarell! Gab es überhaupt Papier in dieser Größe, und wie hat er die Farbschichten darauf gegossen, ohne dass es sich beim Trocknen wellte?

Wie kippte er die Oberfläche, um einen regelmäßigen Farbfluss zu erhalten, ohne dass sich Lachen bildeten? Das Format der Fotokopien war absurd, aber die Größe der Originale – nicht in Zentimetern, sondern in Metern – war atemberaubend; jedes Bild ließ einem den Mund offen stehen! „Die Maßangaben, sind das Zentimeter oder Meter?“, fragte ich. „Meter.“ Ich war verblüfft. „Ist das gegossen?“ „Ja, es ist gegossen.“ Kein Pinsel war so groß, und egal, wie breit er auch sein mochte, es würden immer Streichkanten bleiben, wenn der Maler mit einem einzigen Farbauftrag eine einheitliche Oberfläche erhalten wollte.

Bei einem Aquarell muss man darauf achten, nicht zu viele Farbschichten aufzutragen, da sich sonst Lachen bilden; nur Meister wie Sargent und Hopper beherrschen diese Technik wirklich. Nun, wir werden sehen, dachte ich. Der Titel, diese ausgelaugte, krampfhafte Metapher stieß mich ab. Nichts ist ekelhafter als amerikanischer Surrealismus, dachte ich. Das ist wie ein Fernfahrer-Onkel, der ein Tutu für den Ballettunterricht anprobiert. Jedenfalls muss Surrealismus scheußlich sein, wie E. E. Cummings, der sich in ein nasses Tempotaschentuch verwandeln kann, wenn er sentimental ist, und Clemente ist ungeniert sentimental. Seine Zartheit und Sensibilität können irritierend sein, aber allmählich erkannte ich, dass er es so will; er will sowohl die feuchte, sentimentale Chose erfassen als auch provozieren, dass man davor zurückschreckt. Aquarelle in dieser Größe müssen es mit der Angriffslust – oder sagen wir, der Vehemenz – großer Ölbilder aufnehmen. Es setzte also so etwas wie eine Bekehrung ein. Ich erkannte, dass die Ausführung der Aquarelle nichts mit den üblichen Rorschach-

Klecksen zu tun hatte, der todlangweiligen Hingabe an eindimensionale Rätsel. Ich hatte gelesen, dass Clemente in Indien lebte und lebt, aber diese Mandalas hatten nichts Affektiertes, nichts Mysteriöses, nichts von einem psychologischen Rätsel.

Kein naiver Künstler hätte sie anfertigen können; sie waren Ausdruck einer Magie, der Fingerfertigkeit des Malers. Was ich vermutlich schätzen werde, dachte ich, ist das technische Wunder einer hängenden Masse Wasser: die Transformation des Materials in etwas Verblüffendes und Widersprüchliches.

II Clementes Zeichnungen sind bewusst infantil – das heißt, unschuldig – in dem Sinne, wie Blake Unschuld beschreibt: eine neue Erleuchtung, die auf eine Erfahrung folgt. Aber sie sind zugleich auch primitiv, oder eher ursprünglich, und ägyptisch wie David Hockneys serielle Basreliefs. Er datiert klassische griechisch-römische Malerei und Skulptur vor, und zunächst wirkt das gespielt naiv, aufgesetzt, aber es ist einfach eine Art, die Welt neu zu sehen, ohne jegliche Theorie, so wie Blake nicht „mit“ den Augen, sondern „durch“ die Augen zu sehen, und mir widerstrebt das. Aber, wie gesagt, vermutlich sollte ich es ablehnen, es belehrend und herablassend betrachten, wie ein Missionar die Tafeln und Amulette eines nackten Stammes betrachtet, oder ein Vater ein zurückgebliebenes Kind, oder ein Arzt die Arbeit eines labilen Patienten. Die Zeichnungen sehen oft verwundet aus, als seien es Symbole psychischer Instabilität, die Abnormitäten einer harmlosen Fantasie, aber sie sind mehr als das – es sind Widersprüche der Geschichte, einer vorgegebenen Ästhetik, der Perspektive und ihrer dritten Dimension nicht trotzend, sondern sich ihrer nicht bewusst. Sie schweben über Regeln und Prinzipien wie Chagalls Kompositionen. Es gibt keine Achse und es gibt keinen Rahmen. Mein Zorn auf Clementes Zeichnungen begann mit all diesen Dingen, war aber hauptsächlich ein Zurückschrecken vor ihrem Surrealismus – ein schwebender Penis hier, ein einzelnes Auge dort, Gummigliedmaßen, Körper ohne Skelett, eine zu auffällige Fantasie. Nun, da ich offiziell darum gebeten wurde, betrachtete ich sie respektvoller und nicht mehr als die Kritzeleien eines alternden Enfant terrible.

Was mich irritierte, war ihr Surrealismus. Ich mag ihn weder in der Dichtung noch in der Malerei – beispielsweise Redon und seinen dahinziehenden Zyklopenkopf. Amerikanische Dichter und Maler hantierten mit dem Surrealismus, als hätten sie ihn beim Biertrinken in der Kneipe entdeckt. Frank O’Hara gestand, ihn übertragen zu haben, und dann wurde er sein eigenes Gegenteil; Regellosigkeit wurde zur Regel, Freiheit wurde zu Zwang und gab der mäandernden Linie eine neue Perspektive. Das Kraftvolle wurde niedlich. Stellt man Clemente neben Blake, wird die Wandlung von Kraft oder von Gebet in Pathos deutlich. Aber ich folge einer trügerischen Spur, und ich muss zu den Anfängen zurückkehren: zur Vision, zu der Art, in der ein Künstler sieht. Wir können nicht verändern, was wir sehen, und dennoch sehen keine zwei Künstler dasselbe Objekt oder dieselbe Person, dasselbe Stillleben oder dieselbe Landschaft auf dieselbe Art. Wenn dem so wäre, würde es nur eine Zeichnung, ein Porträt

und eine Sichtweise geben, die sich in jeder Kultur identisch wiederholen würde, weil die Gesetze der Reproduktion unveränderlich sind. Clemente ist Italiener und daher Nachfahre und Erbe Michelangelos; können wir diese schlaffen, knochenlosen Kritzeleien an der marmornen Festigkeit, sagen wir, der Sybille von Cumae oder dem Muskelspiel eines austrainierten Athleten messen? Ich lasse die Künstler, die Michelangelo als Beefsteak abgetan haben, außen vor; aber die Schule Michelangelos kann sich selbst rhetorisch so aufblasen, dass man sich fast nach den epigrammatischen Reduktionen eines Clemente sehnt. Erst seit kurzer Zeit dürfen große Maler schlechte Zeichner sein. Weder Cézanne noch van Gogh zeichneten wirklich überragend; ihr Unvermögen war eine Angst, derer sie Herr zu werden versuchten, indem sie ihren Verzerrungen Harmonie verliehen.

William Blake wusste, dass man Erfahrung haben muss, um Unschuld in der Poesie zu vermitteln oder zu schaffen, und dass im gespielt Naiven der Verrat der Wahrheit liegt; und entweder weiß das auch Francesco Clemente, der Maler, oder er tut so, als wüsste er es nicht.

Wie dem auch sei: Sein Werk fordert dazu auf, regressiv zu schauen; es enthält Lebenserfahrung, präsentiert sich aber vom zeichnerischen Entwurf her als unschuldig, sogar als ignorant. Der Zeichner stellt es so dar, als sei so viel Erfahrung festzuhalten, dass es der Reduktion, der Vereinfachung, des beinahe Formelhaften bedarf.

Zeichnungen sind ebenso persönlich wie die Handschrift, und wenn wir Clementes Zeichnungen lesen, erkennen wir sowohl Klarheit als auch Widersprüchlichkeit. Sie sehen aus wie sich windende Reflexionen auf der sanften Oberfläche des Papiers. Sie betonen Schüchternheit, Zerbrechlichkeit, Angst. Ihre klare Vergänglichkeit ist verstörend. Diese gewaltigen Aquarelle bergen trotz oder wegen ihrer Größe sowohl Erfahrung als auch Unschuld. Im weitläufigen Ausstellungsraum, in dem ihre Mantras inszeniert werden, erscheinen sie wie die Wände eines Tempels, in dem Clemente, der Künstler, als Bewahrer und als Priester fungiert.

Dieses Gefühl des Dienstes an der Fantasie und am Volksstamm hat mehr als ein säkulares Beispiel und hätte fast zu meiner Bekehrung geführt. Ich schätze die Freude in seiner Geduld, in dem Nachdruck, mit dem der Maler – wie jeder Maler – Symbol und Geheimnis gewichtet, die Freude in seiner offenen Religiosität. Es gibt nur wenige Künstler, die ihre Begabung so ungeniert wertschätzen. Diese Heiligsprechung der Freude hat Wordsworth als Priester der Natur bezeichnet – und damit nicht Landschaften, sondern unsere geistigen Reisen gemeint.

In technischer Hinsicht haben diese spirituellen Landschaften die Textur ihres Ursprungs bewahrt: Wasser. Ihre Kompositionen umgehen stets Gefahr und Absorption. Man spürt die kurze Glückseligkeit, die aufblüht, wenn der farbgetränkte Pinsel die feuchte Oberfläche berührt und das Malen selbst eine Berührung in Gang setzt, welche den Maler augenblicklich sowohl befähigt als auch demütig macht; man spürt, dass sie wiederholt wurde, ausgedehnt bis zu einer Ekstase, die alles liebt, besonders Sex, das Mysterium des Fleisches im Sinne von Blakes Mantra: Denn alles, was lebt, ist heilig, Leben erfreut sich an Leben Nichts kann je die Seele süßer Zufriedenheit verderben.

Für mich funktioniert der surrealistische Versuch, Metaphern zu reproduzieren, nicht so recht.

Malerei kann Gleichnisse reproduzieren – dies ruft das hervor –, das Gleichgewicht zwischen zwei Objekten, die synonym gesetzt werden, kann nur bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt gehen, wenngleich dieser Punkt sehr erfreulich sein kann wie bei Chagall, dem Maler, an den Clemente am stärksten denken lässt; allerdings haben die Bemühungen des Surrealismus, gemalte Poesie zu schaffen, für mich ihre Grenzen. Ich halte Abstand, weil surrealistische Malerei ein Versuch ist, eine zweite Sprache zu schaffen, in der keine Logik gilt. All die Objekte bei Chagall haben noch immer einen Namen, genauso wie bei Clemente, aber der Vergleich dieser Gemälde mit Gedichten stellt eine Grenze dar. Ich verharre an dieser Grenze, bin nicht bereit, sie zu überschreiten, aber mein Zögern und meine Weigerung sind mein Fehler.

Clemente lässt mich meine Unzulänglichkeit eingestehen. Ich verweigere die Kapitulation, ihr banales, intolerantes Gegenteil. Hier ist das menschliche Herz das Thema, voll gewichtet und schlagend. Bei Chagall sind Kühe, Geiger und explodierende Blumensträuße Symbole der Orthodoxie. Clemente ist weltlich, aber kein Ketzer; seine Orthodoxie ist die Kunst.

Ein Objekt, ein Gesicht, ein Laib, eine Landschaft existieren im Äther, im ungerahmten Raum.

Ein Blatt Papier, eine Kamera, eine nackte Wand mit Kanten sollen die Züge des Subjekts umfassen. Beginnen Proportion und Abmessung sofort? Ist dies synonym mit Vision? Gibt es auf der Leinwand oder auf dem Zeichenpapier bereits Linien, projiziert von der Masse oder der Größe des Objekts? Sind diese Linien unbeweglich? Clemente sitzt neben Michelangelo; beide zeichnen. Da es nur ein Objekt gibt, das gezeichnet wird, sollte die Reproduktion in der jeweiligen Darstellung identisch sein, aber dem ist nicht so. Beiden Versionen Gültigkeit zuzusprechen, würde bedeuten, dass es so etwas wie die Darstellung der Realität nicht gibt, dass die Art, wie irgendetwas mit Linien definiert wird, akzeptabel, anarchisch ist. Clemente geht einen Schritt zurück in die Zeit, in der die Regeln der Darstellung noch nicht formalisiert waren, und fährt instinktiv mit dem Zeichnen fort. Aber wie? Wer diktiert die Richtung seiner Linie und was ist seine Absicht? Die Vase, der Apfel, das Gesicht oder seine Vision von ihnen? Was bedeutet diese Aufhebung des Glaubens, der verwandelt von einer flachen, ebenen Oberfläche herabhängt? Die Realität dieser ebenen Oberfläche ohne jegliche erzwungene oder künstliche Tiefe, behandelt als das, was sie ist, donnernd angekündigt von Cézannes Gemälden vom Mont Sainte-Victoire, bei denen er gleichzeitig mit zwei Wahrheiten arbeitete: Die flache Ebene der Leinwand und die Fortführung dieser Eindimensionalität durch die Aneinanderreihung von Pinselstrichen, Ziegelsteinen ähnlich, die für Festigkeit wie auch für Tiefe sorgen.

In der impressionistischen Malerei veränderte der Tod des für die Kontur verwendeten Schwarz – außer für einen trotzigen Manet – zugleich auch die Perspektive. Alles ist nah, sogar die Ferne. Die Farbe, oder eher der Akt des Malens, wird vom Betrachter geteilt, und Abstand ist nur eine Frage der Schattierung oder des Farbtons. Anders in der Akademie, wo der Künstler über Ferne nachdenkt, während er sie zeichnet. Clementes Flächen beginnen mit Freude; jede Zeichnung des gemalten Objekts ist eine Manifestation der Freude, dieses zu malen – die unschuldige Freude des Kindes, bis die Anforderungen, vor die die Realität stellt, zu

schwierig werden und das Zeichnen aufgegeben wird. Wir haben Kunst auf Gehorsam reduziert. Dies ist nicht Blakes Weg, und es ist nicht der von Clemente, aber die Frage bleibt: Wer entscheidet das? Wer entscheidet, was gute und was schlechte Zeichnung ist? Van Gogh und Cézanne können beide wunderbar ungeschickte Zeichner sein, aber dieses Argument ist zu einfach. Gute Zeichnung erhebt sich über ihre Konturen hinaus.

Während wir arbeiten, wirft unsere Arbeit einen Schatten; wenn es um Sprache geht, ist die entsprechende Parallele ein Echo des einzelnen Wortes. Clemente will sowohl den Schatten wie auch das Echo des Originals malen – das ist sein wahres Gebiet, ebenso wie das Objekt, das seine Zeichnungen umreißen: nicht nur das Objekt, sondern der Schatten des Objekts; nicht nur das Wort, sondern das Echo des Worts. Und manchmal geht bei Clemente der Schatten dem Subjekt und das Echo dem Wort voraus.

Die Ausstellung von 15 riesigen Aquarellen mit dem zusammenfassenden Titel Eine Geschichte des Herzens in drei Regenbogen ist hinsichtlich des Maßstabs verblüffend, aber konzeptionell eher bescheiden statt pompös. Ihr Humor ist fein, ihre Zartheit unerschrocken. In einem solchen Maßstab Intimität herzustellen, dem Betrachter ins Ohr zu flüstern, statt zu brüllen, gibt Anlass zu einer Bekehrung. Seine Franziskanische Liebe zu allen Dingen spricht Clementes Serie heilig.

A Conversion

II

Clemente’s drawing is deliberately infantile – that is, innocent – in the way that Blake describes innocence: a new illumination that follows on experience. But it is also primitive, or rather primal, and Egyptian like David Hockney’s serial bas-reliefs. He antedates classical, Greco-Roman drawing and sculpture, and at first it seems faux-naïf, a pretext, but it is, simply, without any theory, a way of seeing the world afresh, of Blake’s looking not “with” but “through” the eye, and I resist it. But, again, I was probably meant to dislike it, to look at it correctingly, patronizingly, the way a missionary may look at the tablets and amulets of a naked tribe, a parent at a backward child, or a doctor at the work of an unstable patient.

The drawings often look wounded, as if they are the emblems of a psychic instability, the deformities of a harmless imagination, but they are more than that – they are contradictions of history, of a given aesthetic, not defiant of but unaware of perspective and its third dimension. They float above rules and principles like Chagall’s compositions. There is no pivot and there is no frame. My anger at Clemente’s drawing began with all these things, but was chiefly a recoil from their surrealism – a floating penis here, a disembodied eye there, rubber limbs, bodies without skeletons, a too conspicuous imagination. Now, being formally asked, I looked at them more respectfully than at the doodling of an aging enfant terrible.

I When I was invited to write about Clemente, my instant reaction was refusal, because his work irritated rather than excited me. But the idea was challenging and my judgment needed reassessment. I had been sent reproductions measuring about an inch high of his series. “A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows” (the title creating a slight, disdainful shudder), and their scale seemed incredible – six feet by twelve feet – in watercolour! Was there paper that size, and did he pour on the washes of colour without their buckling when they dried? How did he tilt the surface to get an even flow of colour without their puddling?

The photocopy dimensions were absurd, but their original scale – not in inches, but in feet – was staggering; each painting aimed at inducing a wow!

“The measurement: is this inches or feet?” I asked.

“Feet.”

I was astounded.

“Does he pour it?”

“Yes, he poured it.”

No brush was that wide, and no matter how broad the brush, it would leave streams at the edge of the stroke if the painter wanted a unified surface, a single wash.

In a watercolour you have to watch out for doing too many washes, the paint puddling; only masters like Sargent or Hopper avoid this. Well, we’ll see, I thought. The title of that effete effort at metaphor put me off. Nothing is more nauseous than American surrealism, I thought. It’s like a truck-driving uncle trying on a tutu for ballet class. Anyway, I like my surrealism nasty, like e.e. cummings, who can turn into wet Kleenex when he is sentimental, and Clemente is unabashedly sentimental. His delicacy, his sensitivity, can be irritating, but I began to see that he wants it to be that way; he wants to record both the damp, sentimental thing and to provoke my recoil from it. Watercolour on that scale must have taken on the belligerence – or, say, the vehemence – of large oils. So something approaching a conversion began. Their design, I could see, was not the usual Rorschach dribbles, the mind-numbing surrender to uni-dimensional mystery. I read that Clemente lived, lives in India, but those mandalas were without affectation or enigma or psychological riddle.

No naïf artist could have done them; they were a manifestation of magic, of the painter’s prestidigitation. What I will probably admire, I thought, is the technical miracle of a mass of water suspended: a transformation of the material into what is astonishing and contradictory.

It was their surrealism that irritated me. I dislike it in poetry and I dislike it in painting – for example, Redon and that drifting cyclopean head of his. American poets and painters brandished surrealism as if they had discovered it having a beer at the Cedar Tavern. Frank O’Hara admitted the adaptation, and then it became its opposite; it made not having rules the rule, it made freedom compulsion and made a new perspective of the meandering line.

It made the powerful cute. If you place Clemente next to Blake, the changing of power or of prayer into pathos is evident. But I am following a deceptive lead and I need to go back to where it begins: vision, the way an artist sees. We cannot alter what we see, and yet no two artists see the same object or person, still-life or landscape, the same way. Otherwise there would only be one drawing, one portrait, one view identically repeated in every culture because the laws of reproduction are unalterable. Clemente is Italian and therefore a descendant of and an heir to Michelangelo; can we place these flaccid, boneless doodles against the marmoreal solidity of, say, the Cumaen Sybil or the muscle flexing of a six-pack athlete. I forget the artist who dismissed Michelangelo as beefsteak; but the school of Michelangelo can balloon and inflate itself so rhetorically that we can long for the epigrammatic reductions of a Clemente. It is only recently that great painters have been allowed to be bad draughtsmen. Neither Cézanne nor Van Gogh really drew that astonishingly; their badness was an anguish that they had to dominate by giving their distortions harmony.

William Blake knew that it takes experience to render or create innocence in poetry, that the betrayal of truth lies in the faux-naïf; and Francesco Clemente, the painter, either knows this or pretends that he doesn’t. At any rate, his work invites one to look regressively; it contains experience, but presents its conceptual drawing as innocence, as even ignorance.

The draughtsman presents his as if there is so much experience to be recorded that it needs reduction, simplification, near formula.

Drawing is as personal as handwriting, and when we read Clemente’s drawings we see both clarity and contradiction. They look like wriggling reflections on the placid surface of the paper. They emphasize timidity, fragility, fear. Their limpid mortality is disturbing. These massive watercolours, despite their scale, or because of it, contain both experience and innocence. In the spacious gallery where their mantras are mounted, they are like the walls of the temple where Clemente, the artist, is preserver and priest.

This sense of service to the imagination and to the tribe has a more than secular example, and it almost effected my conversion. I value the joy in their patience, in their emphasis on the painter’s – every painter’s – evaluation in symbol and mystery, in their open piety. There are few artists around who so unabashedly cherish their vocation; to sanctify delight is to be what Wordsworth called Nature’s Priest – not of landscapes, but of our mental travel.

Technically, these spiritual landscapes have kept the texture of their origin: water. Their compositions always skirt peril and absorption. You feel that the brief bliss which blossoms when the loaded brush touches the damp surface and the painting begins that touch which instantly enables and humbles the painter, has been repeated, prolonged into an ecstasy of loving everything, especially sex, the mystery of flesh in the terms of Blake’s mantra: For everything that lives is holy, life delights in life Therefore the soul of sweet content can never be defiled.

It is the surrealist effort to reproduce metaphor that does not quite work for me. Painting can reproduce simile – this evokes that – the balance of two objects that are made synonymous, that can only go so far, though where it gets can be very enjoyable, as with Chagall, the painter whom Clemente most evokes; but surrealism’s effort to create a pictorial poetry has its limits for me. I keep a distance because surrealist painting is an attempt to make a second language in which logic does not apply. All the objects in Chagall still have names, as they do in Clemente, but comparing these paintings to poems is itself a frontier. I pause at the border unwilling to cross over, but my hesitancy and refusal is my fault. Clemente makes me admit my inadequacy. I resist surrender, his banal, intolerant opposite. Here the theme is the human heart, weighted full and palpitating. In Chagall, cows and fiddlers, exploding bouquets, they are symbols of orthodoxy. Clemente is secular, but not a heretic. Art is his orthodoxy.

An object, a face, a loaf, a landscape exists in air, unframed space. A sheet of paper, a camera, a blank wall with edges is meant to contain the lineaments of the subject. Does proportion, measurement begin instantly? Is it synonymous with vision? Are there already on the canvas or sheet of drawing paper lines that are projected by the mass or bulk of the object? Are these lines inflexible? Clemente is sitting next to Michelangelo; both are drawing. Since there is only one object being drawn, reproduction should be identical in either’s representation, but they are not. To permit both versions to be valid is to say that there is no such thing as the presentation of reality, that the way anything is defined in line is acceptable, anarchic.

Clemente steps back in time before the rules of representation are formalized and proceeds,

instinctually, to draw. How? Who dictates the direction of his line and what is its intention?

The vase, the apple, the face, or his vision of them? What is this suspension of belief that hangs transformed from a flat plane surface? The reality of that plane surface without any forced or artificial depth, treated for what it is, was thunderously adumbrated by Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire paintings in which he simultaneously worked in two truths: the flat plane of the canvas and the continuation of that one dimension by the succession of bricklike strokes that build solidity and also depth.

In impressionist painting, the death of black for outline, except for a defiant Manet, also altered perspective. Everything is close, even distance. The paint, or rather the action of painting, is shared by the viewer and difference is only a matter of tint and hue. This is not so in the academy where the artist thinks of distance as he draws it. Clemente’s planes begin with gaiety; every drawing of the painted object is a manifestation of the delight in painting it, which is the infantile delight of the child until the instruction of reality becomes too difficult and drawing is abandoned. We have reduced art to obedience. This is not Blake’s route and it is not Clemente’s, but the question is always: Who is to say? Who is to say what is good or bad drawing? Van Gogh and Cézanne can both be gloriously awkward draughtsmen, but that defence is too easy. Good drawing vibrates beyond its outlines.

As we work, the work casts a shadow, or if it is language, an echo of every word is its parallel.

Clemente wants to paint the shadow and the echo of the original; that is his true territory as well as the object that his drawings delineate: not only the object, but the shadow of the object; not only the word, but the echo of the word. And sometimes in Clemente, the shadow precedes the subject and the echo precedes the word.

The exhibition of fifteen immense watercolours with the overall title “A History of the Heart in Three Rainbows” is staggering in scale but is conceptually humble rather than pompous.

Its humour is delicate, its tenderness unabashed. To manage intimacy on such a scale, to whisper in the viewer’s ear rather than roar, is worthy of a conversion. His Franciscan affection for all things makes Clemente’s series sacred.

Mental’nyi limon | Das Skelett des Wassers Andrei Voznesensky

Wir sitzen, vermutlich, in Greenwich Village, in der Nummer 92–94, im Haus des Künstlers Francesco Clemente, in dem früher Bob Dylan gewohnt hat, der gestern 50 Jahre alt geworden ist, wir sitzen im grünen Innenhof, die abgasgeschwängerte Betonstadt, in der der Garten wie ein grüner Schlag wirkt, im Rücken, wir sitzen also inmitten dieser kleinen grünen Revolution, wir sind in ihren Gedanken, vegetatives Bewusstsein, und da ist das weiße Parallelogramm von Allen Ginsberg, der wie ein Tibeter den Nabel seiner Spiegelreflex-Kamera betrachtet, und da ist das schwarze Quadrat des Gastgebers, rasiert wie ein Buddha, ein rasierter Sträfling der Zivilisation, da ist das lila T-Shirt von Michael McClure, das sich mit dem Weiß seines Kameraden vermischt, das rote Flackern italienischen Lachens, und Raymond in Bluejeans wirft den Zwillingen einen Ball zu über das schwarze Dreieck von Alba hinweg, und der unvollendete Gedanke an Dylan gesellt sich zu uns, und da ist ein orangefarbenes Quietschen auf dem Rasen, und da sind andere Farben, vermutlich, aber es muss fast acht Uhr sein, weil es dunkel wird und die Farben ineinander übergehen.

Mich interessiert nicht die äußere, sondern die innere Farbe der Gegenstände.

Natürlich mischen sich Abstraktion und Expressionismus hinein – de Koonings und Andy Warhols Soupculture – aber da ist mehr als das neoexpressionistische Etikett. Da ist Poesie, er mischt seine Farben darauf – Blake, Pound und die Beats der Sechziger.

Natürlich sind es nicht die Meinungen und die linken oder rechten politischen Standpunkte, die er von diesen Dichtern übernimmt, sondern deren geistiges Wesen, die alltägliche Spiritualität, das Metaphysischwerden durch das Konkrete, die Aufmerksamkeit für das Nächstfolgende und deren Aufrichtigkeit. Sogar sein künstlerisches Material – Papier – ist das Material des Dichters. Dies ist die Summe unseres Jahrhunderts: Dichtung + Video, das Spirituelle durch das Visuelle. Farbe vermischt sich mit dem Wort. Und die tantrische Bedeutung des Seins wird klarer.

Ost vermischt sich mit West.

Die Zeit und das Sein haben die Qualität eines Aquarells – Farbe geht in Farbe über, Gedanke in Gedanke, Leben in Nichtleben – ich spreche natürlich von der inneren Farbe.

„Um näher an Roerich Peak zu gelangen, bin ich viele Kilometer bis zum Dorf Kangra gewandert“, erzählt Clemente. „Im Dorf wurde meine Tasche gestohlen. Darin war alles, was ich besaß. Damals war ich jung und arm. Also rief ich sie zusammen und sagte: ‚So könnt ihr einen Künstler nicht behandeln. Gebt sie zurück!‘ Am Morgen brachte mir ein Mädchen meine Tasche zurück. Sie sagte, ein Hund habe sie gestohlen. Der Hund sei offensichtlich Kleptomane. Mir wurde klar, dass sie unberechenbar waren. Gestern haben sie gestohlen, heute bringen sie es zurück, morgen werden sie dich töten. Ich reiste ab.“

Wir führten diese Unterhaltung genau zu der Zeit, als Rajiv Gandhi umgebracht wurde.

Ich mag Clementes Aquarelle. Nicht nur die Farben des Augenblicks, die momentanen, sondern die geistigen Farben.

Der babyblaue Buddha aus Ton beobachtete uns, während er gestohlene Süßigkeiten aß, seine Mutter hatte ihn immer noch nicht erwischt.

Welches Wasser verwendet der Künstler? Leitungswasser, Castille, Heraklit, Evian, Ganges, freudianisches, fucking Beatnik oder Weihwasser? Auf seinem Papier windet sich unser tödlich erkranktes Wasser und stirbt – vergiftet von Pestiziden und chemischen Filtern, Wasser-91, unser gefährliches und deshalb noch fragileres momentanes Wasser.

Was wird der Künstler nach seiner Reise nach Moskau erzählen? Was wird er sehen? Den Film Accident, the Cop’s daughter? – im russischen Slang sind Menti die Cops. Wie die Augen unseres Papierhungers das üppige Mahl seiner riesigen Papieransammlung verschlingen werden?

Wird er die seismischen Veränderungen in Russland spüren?

Noch nie zuvor hat das Wasser die Farbe der Helligkeit mit solcher Reinheit und solcher Strahlkraft abgegeben.

Inmitten der neuen Lügen brauchen wir lebendiges Wasser, Reinheit der Farbe, natürliche, nicht von Pestiziden verseuchte Aufrichtigkeit, wir brauchen eine grüne – fast hätte ich „Revolution“ gesagt.

Der verbotene Marihuana-Joint der Sechziger wird auf gemütliche Art herumgereicht, die 60er gehen wie in einem Spiegelbild in die 90er über, die 90er → 06er des nächsten Jahrhunderts, vermutlich.

Das Skelett des Wassers verdurstet auf dem Papier an der Wand. Es ist trockenes Wasser, ein Flussbett aus Farbe von Henri Michaux, das der Dichter gemalt hat, als er mit Drogen experimentierte. Ein Fingerabdruck aus Wasser. Er malte mit dem Wasser des Unterbewussten.

„Das Schlimmste ist“, flüstert er und bringt sein Gesicht ganz nah an meines, „eine fette Seele.

In New York wird die Seele nicht fett.“ New York schenkt uns immer wieder Neues. Pop-Art, Konzeptualisten, Minimalisten. Und jetzt interessiere ich mich für die natürliche Schule – Aquarelle und Gouachen, Clementes mentale Farben.

Der Künstler ist natürlich zeitgenössisch und superironisch. Durch seine östliche Sanftheit schimmert ein knallharter Wille. Als er erfuhr, dass Chagall meine Gedichte illustriert hatte, sagte er: „Nun, das macht es nur noch interessanter, meine eigenen zu machen.“ Aber das kranke Wasser der Zeit, Wasser-91, taucht in diesem Augenblick in seinen Aquarellen auf.

Was wird er morgen sagen, wenn er seine Pinsel in die Wasser von 92–94 taucht?

Clemente kennt keine Grenzen.

Lemony Clemente? The menthol aroma of color is like teas brewed from natural roses, jasmine, and cadmium.

We are sitting, probably, in Greenwich Village, in number 92–94, in the house of the artist Francesco Clemente, which formerly belonged to Bob Dylan, who turned 50 yesterday, we are sitting in the inner green garden, behind the back of the concrete, gas-fumed city, where that garden is an inner stroke of green, and so we are sitting inside that small green revolution, we are its thoughts, vegetative consciousness, and there is the white parallelogram of Allen Ginsberg, who Tibetan-like regards the navel of his reflex camera, and the black square of the host, shaved Buddha-like, a shaved convict of civilization, the purple T-shirt of Michael McClure with the white of his companion blending in, the red flare of Italian laughter, and blue-jeaned Raymond is tossing a ball to the twins over the black triangle of Alba, and the incomplete thought of Dylan joins us, and there is an orange squeal on the lawn, and there are other colors, probably, but it must be near eight o’clock, because it’s getting dark and the colors are blending into each other.

It’s not the outer color but the inner color of objects that interests me.

The banned marijuana joint of the sixties is passed around in a homey way, the 60s in a mirror image blend into the 90s, the 90s → 06s of the next century, probably.

Time and being have the quality of watercolor – color blends into color, thought into thought, life into nonlife – I’m speaking, of course, of inner color.

I like Clemente’s watercolors. Not only the colors of the moment, the momental colors, but the mental colors.

What waters does the artist use? Tap water, Castille, Heraclitus, Evian, Ganges, Freudian, fucking beatnik, or holy water? On his paper, our mortally ill water writhes and dies – poisoned by pesticides and chemical filters, Water-91, our dangerous and therefore even more fragile, momental water.

Never before has water given off the color of lightness with such purity and radiance.

The skeleton of water dies of thirst on the paper on the wall. This is dry water, a color riverbed

by Henri Michaux, painted by the poet when he was experimenting with drugs. A fingerprint of water. He painted with the water of the subconscious. The only nontranslucent, waterless piece in the house is a gray, beautiful face, done in lousy oils, of the Fallen Angel, what we call a demon, whose hair is gelled like a punk’s into the wings of Hermes, it is a portrait by

Fuseli, a friend and teacher of William Blake. Blake and poetry are Clemente’s main source.

Cosmogeny – fire, earth, water, air – Clemente’s elements.

Of course, abstractionism and expressionism blend in – de Kooning and Andy Warhol’s soupculture – but there is more than the NeoExpressionist label. Poetry is present, he mixes his colors on it – Blake, Pound, and the Beats of the sixties.

Of course, it is not the opinions and political stands on the left or right that he takes from those poets, but their spiritual essence, the quotidian spirituality, becoming metaphysical through the concrete, the attention to the next, and their sincerity. Even his artist’s material – paper – is the material of the poet. This is the sum of our century: poetry + video, the spiritual through the visual. Color blends into word. And the tantric meaning of being becomes more clear.

East blends into West.

“In order to get closer to Roerich’s peak I walked to the village of Kangra for many km,” Clemente said. “My bag was stolen in the village. It contained everything I owned. I was young and poor then. I got them together and said, ‘You can’t treat an artist this way. Give it back!’

That morning a girl brought me my bag. She said a dog has stolen it. The dog was obviously a kleptomaniac. I realized that they were unpredictable. Yesterday they steal, today they return it, tomorrow they’ll kill you. I left.”

We had this conversation just when Rajiv Gandhi was killed.

What will the artist say after his trip to Moscow? What will he see? The movie “Accident, the Cop’s daughter?” – in Russian slang, menti are cops. The eyes of our paper hunger devouring the luxurious feast of his vast array of paper? Will he sense Russia’s seismic shifts?

In the midst of the new lies, we need living water, purity of color, natural, unpesticided sincerity, we need a green – I almost said “revolution”.

Rome and Madras blending into New York? Where is Russia spreading and blending into?

“The worst thing,” he whispers, bringing his face close to mine, “is a fat soul. In New York, the soul doesn’t get fat.”

New York keeps giving us new things. Pop Art, conceptualists, minimalists. And now I am interested in the natural school – water colors and gouaches, Clemente’s mental colors.

The artist is contemporary and superironic, of course. His flinty will shows through his Eastern gentleness. When he learned that Chagall had illustrated my poems, he said, “Well, that makes it all the more interesting to do my own.”

But the sick water of the times, Water–91, appears at this moment in his watercolors.

What will he say tomorrow, dipping his brushes in the waters of 92– 94?

Und es gab doch noch Bilder?: Etwa gestern, am 30. März 1988, in der Weinschänke von La Coruña, Galizien, Spanien, die Kinder, die hinten im Raum, zwischen den Fässern, immer wieder hinauf zum laufenden Fernseher blickend, zugleich gewissenhaft ihre Schulaufgaben machten; oder vorgestern, in Vigo, am Atlantischen Ozean, jene Art Vermählung der Flußwellen mit den Meereswellen; keine verleibte sich die andere ein, es war eher ein Aufgehen, ein Verlöschen des Einen im Anderen, dort an der Flußmündung, ungeheuer zart, mit einem leisen Knacken; das Rascheln des Flusses auf das Rauschen des Meeres treffend – ein dadurch verstärktes Rascheln, worauf Fluß- und Meereswellen, eines geworden, gemeinsam hinaus in das Meer strömten; und seltsam auch, wie die Meerwellen sich, vor allem am Rande der Mündung, dann im Gegenzug hineinstahlen ins Landinnere: So viel stärker war in der Mitte die Bewegung der Flußwellen als das dem Anschein nach doch weit kräftigere Anbrausen des Meeres, während in dem Augenblick des Aneinandervorbeiziehens oder -segelns der beiden Strömungen von den mitgeschwemmten Meeresdingen ein eigentümliches Fauchen kam, von Schwemmsand mitsamt den knackenden Muschelresten, gestaut durch den Flußlauf; und genau an der Schwelle oder Barriere zwischen Fluß und Ozean klar sichtbar ein Unterwasserwälzen, ein Walzrad aus den Schlammwolken, welche da aufeinandertrafen, ein gewaltiges Aufwallen silbrigen Sandes – Galizien als das Granitland –, Milliarden Splitter, für einen Moment herauf ans Sonnenlicht reichend und an diesem teilnehmend, eine Art Faltenwerfen beider Sphären, eine glitzernde Trübe als Stau zwischen dem Meer und dem Fluß, wie ein Spalierlaufen, ein Spalier-Entgegenlaufen entsprechend dem sonstigen Spalierstehen, ein Entgegenlaufen der Meerwellen stromauf, in den Fluß, und dann: miteinander in die Salzflut, bei Bachplätschern einerseits und Meeresbrausen andrerseits, das Plätschern wie das Schilpen von Spatzen im Großverkehr.

Und vor ein paar Tagen, zu Beginn der Osterwoche, jenes andere „letzte“ Bild, als in Santiago de Compostela, ebenfalls Galizien, stundenlang ein Landpriester nach dem anderen in eine Seitenkapelle der Kathedrale kam, ein jeder mit einer dreifältigen Kanne in einer ebenso dreifältigen Tasche, um dort wieder aus drei Behältern, riesigen, die Jahresration geweihten Öls für seine Kirche zu schöpfen. Ein Dompriester verteilte, jeweils mit einer langstieligen Kelle, das Öl in die entweder bronzenen oder silbrigen oder blechernen Kannen – diese letzteren wie für die ärmsten der Pfarren –, worauf die Abholer, nach dem Zuschrauben und Verschließen, sich mit dem bereitliegenden Frotteepapier die Finger abwischten. Es handelte sich um ein stark riechendes, nein, duftendes, grüngelbes, schlierig-dickes, glitzeriges galizisches Olivenöl, und einer der sich in rascher Folge abwechselnden Priester, unter denen viele Glatzköpfe waren, würde in meiner Vorstellung mit dem frischgeweihten Öl in seiner dreibäuchigen Tasche gleich zur Stadt hinaus durch die Steppe zu einer fern-fernen,

verlassenen Feldkapelle wandern und darin dort das Ewige Licht mit dem Öl da entzünden, während ein anderer Abholer, einer ohne geistliches Gewand – auf welchen draußen im Hauptschiff, im Abstand zu den Schöpfkesseln, eine blasse junge Frau wartete, lächelnd, nervös, zugleich offen anwesend, ganz Geschlecht – in meiner Vorstellung der Geliebte dieser Frau war („Viel Glück!“), worauf ich endlich in dem Verteiler des Öls jenen jungen, bärtigen, großen Priester erkannte, welcher in der Morgenmesse dem Pilgervolk die Hostien in den Handteller oder auf die herausgestreckten Zungen gelegt hatte, wobei er sichtlich ein paarmal in den Daumen gebissen worden war: Jetzt war er hochaufgerichtet da hinter dem von einem Plastiktuch geschützten Tisch mit den drei Riesenvasen und wartete, die Kelle, die tropfende, in der Hand, auf den nächsten der Ölabholer, indes die schon abgefertigten Landpriester, ihre Kanister in sämtlichen Winkeln der Kapelle abgestellt, noch ein wenig miteinander herumstanden und sich unterhielten, „bis zur Ölweihe im nächsten Jahr“.

And pictures still existed?: Say, yesterday, March 30, 1988, at the tavern in La Coruña, Galicia, Spain, the children, in the back of the room, between the kegs, repeatedly glancing up at the bright TV while conscientiously doing their homework; or the day before yesterday, in Vigo, on the Atlantic, that sort of marriage of river waves and ocean waves: neither incorporating the other, it was more like a mutual dissolving, a mutual snuffing, there at the estuary, incredibly tender, with a slight banging: the swishing of the river encountering the sweeping of the sea – an intensified swishing, whereupon river waves and ocean waves, becoming one, streamed together into the sea; and strange too the way the ocean waves, especially at the edge of the estuary, drew back, sneaking inland: the motion of the river waves in the middle was so much stronger than the seemingly far ore powerful raging of the sea, while the moment the two currents moved or sailed past one another a peculiar hissing came from the maritime things that had been washed along, from the alluvial sand together with the cracking remnants of shells piled up by the river current; and at the very threshold or barrier between river and ocean, clearly visible, an underwater rolling, a rolling wheel of mud clouds meeting there, a tremendous surging of silvery sand – Galicia as the land of granite – billions of splinters, momentarily reaching the sunlight and participating in it, a kind of throwing of creases by both spheres, a glittering murk as a dam between sea and river, like a running between two lines, a running toward two lines, corresponding to the usual two lines, a counter-running of the ocean waves, upstream, into the river, and then: together into the brine, amid brook-murmuring on one side and ocean-roaring on the other, the lapping like the chirping of sparrows in heavy traffic.

And a few years ago, at the start of Easter week, that other “last” picture, when, in Santiago de Compostela, likewise in Galicia, for hours on end, one country priest after another stepped into a side chapel of the cathedral, each priest with a triune ewer in a similarly triune pouch in order to go to three containers, huge ones, and draw the yearly ration of consecrated oil for his church. A cathedral priest, wielding a long-handled ladle, doled out the oil into the either bronze or silver or tin ewers – the latter for the poorest of parishes – whereupon the collector, after screwing shut and stowing away, wiped his fingers on the prepared terry paper.

It was olive oil, with a pungent smell, no, fragrance, greenish-yellow, slimy-thick, glittering Galician olive oil, and in my imagination one of the swiftly changing priests, with many bald heads among them, would put the freshly consecrated oil in his threebellied pouch, then promptly wander out of the city, across the steppe, to a very, very remote, abandoned country chapel, and, with the oil, ignite the Eternal Light, while another collector, one without a priestly garment – a man was awaited, outside in the nave, at a certain distance from the containers, by a pale young woman, smiling, nervous, yet openly present, all sex – was,

in my imagination, this woman’s lover (“Lots of luck!”), whereby I finally recognized the distributor of the oil as that young, tall, bearded priest who, at morning mass, had placed the hosts on the palms of the pilgrims or on their outstretched tongues, whereby his thumb had been visibly bitten several times: Now he was here, tall and upright, behind a table protected by a plastic cloth and sporting three giant vases, and, with the ladle, the dripping ladle, in his hand, he waited for the next oil collector, while the country priests who had already been served had put down their ewers in all nooks and crannies of the chapel and were standing around with one another, conversing a little, “till the oil consecration next year.”

Francesco Clemente war immer offen für das Experimentieren mit neuen Materialien und Techniken, die häufig im Grenzbereich traditioneller Kunstherstellung liegen. Obwohl zögerlich, sich die Fotografie anzueignen, entschloss er sich im März 2011, die Möglichkeit zu erkunden, eine Reihe von Fotografien, die er von seiner New Yorker Studioumgebung gemacht hatte, zu einer Tapete zu verarbeiten. Das Ergebnis ist ein Novum innerhalb seines Werkes: eine gigantische Rolle aus weichkantigen Bildern, etwa 15 Meter lang und fast 4 Meter hoch.

Geschaffen in der Absicht, einen Eindruck in die Atmosphäre zu vermitteln, die Clemente braucht, um Kunst zu schaffen, legen diese Bilder auch Zeugnis ab von der Vielfalt der Kulturen, Artefakte und Freundschaften, die den Kern seines Werkes bilden. Ähnlich wie die transformativen Formen, die seine monumentalen Aquarelle Eine Geschichte des Herzens, 2009, bevölkern, scheinen die Konturen der Objekte, die das Auge von Clementes Kamera einfängt, ineinander überzugleiten.

Dadurch evozieren sie eine Qualität des Fließens, die für seine Kunst charakteristisch ist. Die sepiabraunen Töne der fotografischen Bilder verleihen ihnen eine gewisse verschattete Distanz, die den leuchtend farbigen Formen seiner Aquarelle fremd ist. Geheimnisvoll und zuweilen an der Grenze zur Abstraktion, scheinen die Objekte, auf die sich Clementes Kamera richtet, in unbestimmbaren Gefilden zu schweben, ausbalanciert zwischen Realität und Erinnerung. Das fotografische Medium, in dem sie gestaltet sind, lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auch zurück auf die konzeptuellen Anliegen, die Clementes Kunst zugrunde liegen – und damit auf eine in seinem Werk kontinuierliche Schicht. Mehrschichtig und komplex ineinander verwoben, verwandeln sich die Bilder in ein einzigartiges Selbstporträt, das der Künstler als ein „Kostüm“ beschreibt, „das, was ich wirklich trage“. Letztendlich fungiert diese einfallsreiche Tapete auch als ein Fragezeichen, das den Betrachter auffordert zu beachten, dass die Bestandteile, die bei einem Kunstwerk ins Spiel kommen, vielfältig sind.

Francesco Clemente has always been open to experimenting with new materials and techniques often on the borders of traditional artistic practice. Although reluctant to embrace photography, he decided in March 2011 to explore the possibility of transforming sequenced of photographs he had taken of his New York studio environment into wallpaper. The result is a first in his œuvre: a gigantic scroll of soft-edged images measuring some 15 meters in length and almost 4 meters in height. Intended to provide an impression of the requisite atmosphere for Clemente to make art, these images also attest to the multiplicity of cultures, artifacts, and friendships that lay at the core of this painting. Like the transformative forms that inhabit his monumental watercolors History of the Heart, 2009, the contours of the objects, caught by the eye of Clemente’s camera, seem to merge into one another. In so doing they attain the quality of flux characteristic of his art.

The sepia tones of the photographic images lend them a certain shadowed distance, foreign to the brightly colored shapes in the watercolors. Mysterious and sometimes verging on the abstract, the objects focused upon by Clemente’s camera, seem to hover in an unidentifiable realm, poised between reality and memory. The photographic medium also directs attention back to the conceptual concerns that underlie Clemente’s art: a stratum that continues to endure.

Layered and intricately interwoven, these images also metamorphosize into a kind of unique self-portrait, which the artist describes as a “costume; it’s what I really wear.” Ultimately this inventive wallpaper also functions as a question mark, prompting the viewer to keep in mind that the elements that come into play in an artists’ work are many.

Francesco Clemente im Gespräch mit Pamela Kort PK Wann bist Du zum ersten Mal auf das Wort „Palimpsest“ gestoßen?

FC Da ich zu der letzten Generation gehöre, die eine klassische Schulbildung genossen hat,

muss es mir wohl in der Schule begegnet sein. Aber ich vermute, dass es im Italienischen häufiger verwendet wird, denn es scheint mir ein eher ungewöhnliches Wort im Englischen zu sein.

PK Hat Dir der Begriff gefallen, weil Du Sprachen faszinierend findest? Du hast gerne Latein

gelernt, nicht wahr?

FC Ja, ich habe die Sprache viele Jahre lang mit Freude gelernt. Die Geschichte des Palimpsests

hatte schon immer etwas Rätselhaftes, die Tatsache, dass ein Text ausradiert und überschrieben wird. Die Schichtung reizte mich, und sie reizt mich noch immer; sie korrespondiert mit der Art und Weise, in der ich meine Arbeit sehe – als eine fragmentarische Erzählung, die sich im Laufe ihrer Entfaltung selbst überschreibt. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass ich aus Italien stamme und dass Giorgio De Chirico unter sein vielleicht ergreifendstes Selbstporträt schrieb: „Quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est?“ – Was soll ich lieben können, wenn nicht das unausgesprochene Geheimnis der Dinge?

PK Wusstest Du, dass die meisten der entdeckten Palimpseste – es waren ohnehin nicht sehr

viele – in Italien gefunden wurden?

FC Nein, das ist mir neu. Aber wenn ich darüber nachdenke, meine ich mich daran zu erin-

nern, dass das Wort „Palimpsest“ im Italienischen auch als ironische Bezeichnung für etwas Antikes verwendet wird – etwas, das sehr kompliziert und schwer zu erfassen ist.

PK Wann bist Du erstmals bewusst mit der Bedeutung des Wortes „Palimpsest“ in Berührung gekommen?

FC Ich weiß nicht, ob ich jemals mit diesem Wort „in Berührung gekommen bin“. Ich weiß

nicht, ob ich jemals mit irgendeinem Wort „in Berührung gekommen bin“ bin. Als Maler neige ich dazu, Worte auf eher bildhafte Art zu sehen. Das kann beunruhigend sein für jemanden, der die Dinge eher wörtlich nimmt und glaubt, Worte seien Worte und bedeuten, was sie bedeuten. Aber für mich hat ein Wort einen eher atmosphärischen Wert. „Palimpsest“ scheint eine gewisse Gravitas zu besitzen. Es hat Gewicht. Es hat ein Geheimnis, es hat eine gewisse Strenge. In der Ausstellung ist unter anderem eine Reihe von drei sehr langen Bildrollen zu sehen – drei 18 Meter lange Aquarelle. Ein Palimpsest ist zwar keine Schriftrolle per se, aber Detail aus I Detail from For an History of Women | Für eine Geschichte der Frauen, 2008 siehe S. | see p. 147

es verweist auf die Idee eines Werkes, das aufgerollt gewesen ist und ausgebreitet wurde und das in seiner Länge fortlaufend ist.

PK Das erscheint mir interessant, denn das Wort hat die Bedeutung von ausradieren, aber

auch von aufschreiben. Ich habe mich gefragt, ob dieser Prozess des Vor und Zurück Teil Deiner Arbeitsweise ist?

FC Ich möchte dem, was wir vorhin gesagt haben, noch etwas hinzufügen, und zwar in Bezug auf die äußere Form der Bilder, auf die tatsächliche Erscheinung der Gemälde. Mir geht es um die Beschäftigung mit Offenheit – um das Bestreben, ein Werk zu schaffen, das offen ist, ohne dabei Detail und Einfachheit zu opfern, ein Werk, das nicht als gegeben hingenommen wird und nicht buchstäblich simpel ist. Es geht um all diese Dilemmas und Fragen im Zusammenhang mit der Idee des Palimpsests: eine bereits existierende Partitur zu entfernen und zu überschreiben.

FC Ja. Ich war immer der Ansicht, dass es Maler gibt, die wie Baumeister vorgehen – die

ansammeln was sie machen und herstellen –, und Maler, die eher an Kehrer erinnern und sauber machen. Ich habe mich selbst immer in der zweiten Kategorie gesehen. In meiner Malerei verfolge ich das Ziel, etwas aufzuräumen, zu entfernen, zu eliminieren, wegzuwischen.

Ich habe die gleiche Einstellung zur „Linie“ wie zum „Wort“. Linien sollen andere Linien andeuten, die man nicht sieht, sie sollen nicht wörtlich genommen werden. In meiner Arbeit gibt es eine Art Ungleichgewicht, das einmal jemanden zu der Bemerkung veranlasste, ich verstünde nichts von Komposition – was ich sehr amüsant fand, weil es wahrscheinlich stimmt. Andererseits hat es etwas sehr Markantes, wie ich mich über die Grenzen der Leinwand, über das Papier hinaus bewege.

PK Ist es nicht so, dass der Prozess des Fegens, den Du eben als charakteristisch für Deine

Vorgehensweise beschrieben hast, dem Prozess ähnelt, der ein Palimpsest sichtbar macht?

Es geht um Abschaben und Abkratzen statt darum, etwas aufzubauen. Möchtest Du dazu etwas sagen?

FC Gern. Beim Malen kratze und schabe ich nicht im wörtlichen Sinn, aber meine Art des

Farbauftrags ist weniger ein Pinselstrich als vielmehr die Spur eines Pinselstrichs. Es ist genauso, als ob man einen Boden fegt – es bleibt immer eine dünne Staubschicht zurück, und das ist dann das Gemälde.

PK Wie Du sicher weißt, hat das Wort „Palimpsest“ auch eine geologische Konnotation: Es kann

eine geomorphologische Oberfläche bezeichnen, die von Meeresbewegungen nicht vollständig ausgelöscht wurde. Als wir 2004 gemeinsam an der Ausstellung Clemente: Shipwreck with the Spectator im MADRE in Neapel arbeiteten, sprachen wir oft darüber, wie wichtig Dir das archäologische Erbe der Stadt ist. Ich erinnere mich daran, wie sehr Du dich vom Bild des Tauchers in Paestum angezogen fühltest. Erzähl mir etwas darüber in Beziehung zur Funktionsweise eines Palimpsests: Geht es darum, durch Erfahrungsschichten zu tauchen?

FC Absolut. Das Palimpsest im Zusammenhang mit archäologischer Schichtung ist eine wunderbare Metapher dafür, wie ich mit Ikonografie arbeite – ständig mit Verweisen auf traditionelle Bilder, das heißt Bilder, welche die Kraft haben oder traditionell hatten, zu heilen, die Kraft, Menschen mit sich selbst und mit anderen in Einklang zu bringen, jedoch ohne diesen Kontext. Ich bin kein Mystiker, ich bin kein Betrachter im kontemplativen Sinn.

Ich bin ein zeitgenössischer Künstler, also verwende ich traditionelles Material und schreibe es für das Publikum um. Aber ich biete niemals einen endgültigen Text. Ich biete niemals ein endgültiges …

PK Drehbuch?

FC Drehbuch! Es ist wirklich eine Schichtung: enthüllen, verhüllen, sagen, ungesagt machen.

PK Wunderschön – ein Bild als Spur von Etwas und nicht als das Ding an sich. Geht es Dir

darum, zuzulassen, dass etwas an die Oberfläche dringt, so wie gewissermaßen auch ein Palimpsest plötzlich auftaucht? Würdest Du sagen, dass dies ein Element Deiner Malerei darstellt?

Ich glaube, das Schlüsselwort lautet hier „Verschiebung“: Es ist sehr wichtig, seine eigene Sichtweise und auch die des Betrachters ständig zu verschieben und so deutlich zu machen, dass es sich nicht um Religion handelt. Es sind nur Artefakte, die im Zusammenhang stehen mit unseren Erfahrungen der heutigen Welt, in unserer jetzigen Zeit – nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

FC Ja, unbedingt. Bei diesen Bildern wird dem Untergrund genauso viel, wenn nicht sogar

mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wie dem, was auf den Untergrund aufgetragen wird. Gleiches gilt für die Ikonografie. Es findet sich keine einzige direkte Übernahme in den Arbeiten, kein buchstäbliches Zitat aus der traditionellen Ikonografie – wobei traditionell nicht konservativ oder alt meint, sondern traditionell im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: zu den kontemplativen und gnostischen Traditionen gehörend, die es überall auf der Welt gibt. Stattdessen werden hier Referenzen aktualisiert, genauso wie bei einem Palimpsest – die ursprüngliche Geschichte wird im Kopf und im Bild ausradiert und neu geschrieben, neu erzählt, neu gemalt.

eine psychologische Dimension hat. Die Information, die es anbietet, unterscheidet sich sehr von der Freud’schen Dekodierung der Erfahrung. Ich habe mich gefragt, ob Du etwas zu Deinem frühen Interesse an Personen wie R. D. Laing sagen möchtest und zu seiner Verbindung zur Antipsychiatrie-Bewegung. In der aktuellen Ausstellung impliziert das Wort Palimpsest offensichtlich die Fluktuationen in Deinem Leben – Deine Erfahrungen und Deine Erinnerungen daran und welche Funktion Fluktuationen in Deinen Bildern haben.

PK Inwieweit sind Deine Arbeiten Deiner Ansicht nach in gewissem Sinn in die Farbe geschrieben?

FC R. D. Laing war sehr eng mit Trungpa befreundet, dem Vajrayana-Lehrer von Allen Ginsberg.

Anderen, die er als Erfahrung der „Kontinuität der Diskontinuität“ bezeichnete. Mein Ziel ist es, dass sowohl mein Leben als auch meine Arbeit Ausdruck der Akzeptanz der Kontinuität von Diskontinuität sein können und eine Manifestation von Freiheit. In dem Augenblick, da man akzeptiert, dass es kein Kontinuum gibt, dass die Vorstellung des in sich beständigen Selbst nicht der Realität entspricht, dass eine erzählerische Geschichte der Kunst nicht der Realität entspricht, dass all dies ausgeklügelte Werkzeuge sind, die irgendeinem Zweck dienen, oder sollte ich sagen, die als Konstrukte zur Abgrenzung einer Klasse von einer anderen dienen – in diesem Augenblick, da man das akzeptiert, kann man frei sein.

PK Mir scheint allerdings, dass von Anfang an Du selbst häufig das Thema Deiner Arbeiten

bist. Nehmen wir zum Beispiel die drei Polaroids aus dem Jahr 1972 (S. 92): Schon da scheint Dein Interesse dem Prozess des Verschleierns und Enthüllens zu gelten. Ist dies etwas, das sich durch die gesamte Ausstellung zieht? Was wie ein Selbstporträt aussieht, ist oft viel mehr als nur das. Wie lässt sich dieses schwer zu fassende Element im Zusammenhang mit dem Palimpsest verstehen – als etwas, das gleichzeitig darunter und darüber ist?

FC Wir sprechen hier wieder von Schichtung. Die unmittelbarsten Schichten, denen man

als Mensch begegnet, sind: unter dem Grund, auf dem Grund und über dem Grund. Das Unterirdische, die Oberfläche und das Ätherische. Ich habe mich immer gefragt, woher diese Arbeiten kommen, die ich mache. Und ich habe mir immer gerne vorgestellt, dass diese Arbeiten nicht mir, einem einzelnen Künstler mit einer individuellen Geschichte und einer individuellen Problematik, gehören. Ich wollte mir lieber vorstellen, dass die Arbeiten, wenn nicht zu einer Zivilisation, dann zumindest zu einem Ort im Raum gehören und dass ich das Material nur an den verschiedenen Orten berge, an denen ich es finde – einiges davon unter dem Grund, einiges auf dem Grund und einiges muss ich einfangen, wenn es über meinen Kopf hinwegfliegt.

PK Diese Gedanken sind in gewisser Hinsicht grundlegende Motive in Deinen Arbeiten.

Nehmen wir beispielsweise die auf den ersten Blick Tausende von Kieselsteinen in Sky | Himmel (1984) (S. 92), einer Deiner größten Arbeiten. Ist ein solches Bild nicht eng mit einem Palimpsest verbunden, weil es gewissermaßen demjenigen Form verleiht, was angespült wird?

Siehst Du Deine Arbeit so – als einen Strom? Der etwas freispült?

FC Diese wechselnde Perspektive, die man in der Ausstellung findet, ist eine Übersetzung

von etwas, das in unserer Erfahrung existiert – denn entweder sind wir Zeugen oder diejenigen, über die Zeugnis abgelegt wird. Entweder lassen wir uns zum Objekt machen oder wir handeln selbst. Dazwischen gibt es nichts. Wenn es also darum geht, sich einem Gemälde oder einem Objekt zu nähern, gibt es, wie gesagt, nicht wirklich viele Möglichkeiten. Entweder objektiviert man das Wissen, das man zu haben glaubt – und dann ist das Ergebnis diese klare Ikonografie, diese Bilder in meinem Œuvre, die eine Erinnerung wachrufen, eine beruhigende Vertrautheit, die Klarheit und Verführung, die das Publikum leichter teilen kann – oder man handelt einfach, um zu absorbieren und von dem Selbst absorbiert zu werden, das man ist, und macht etwas damit, ohne zu wissen, wo es hinführt.

Ich glaube, dass es in meinem Gesamtwerk nur wenige Bilder dieser Art gibt. Es sind wenige, weil es schwerer ist, so zu leben und so etwas zu schaffen. Außerdem ist dieser Zustand schwerer zu erreichen. Andererseits mag ich diese „unbeliebten“ Arbeiten sehr gerne – sie sind Fasern eines Fadens, der in die Arbeit hineingewebt ist, ein Faden der Formlosigkeit.

Ich möchte es nicht als Abstraktion, sondern als Formlosigkeit bezeichnen. Wie bei einem Palimpsest muss man, um etwas Neues in sein Leben zu schreiben, zuvor all das ausradieren, was jemand anderes für einen hineingeschrieben hat. Dieser Andere schreibt immer weiter, und so gleicht unser Leben einem ständigen Kampf: Wir wollen das ausradieren, was geschrieben worden ist, damit wir unsere eigene Geschichte schreiben können.

PK Als ich mich zum ersten Mal mit Deinen Arbeiten beschäftigte, hielt ich die Begräbnis-

bilder für einen sehr unerwarteten Bruch. Aber je länger wir darüber sprechen, desto mehr erkenne ich, dass die Vorstellung der Wiederauferstehung oder des unterirdischen Raums – der ja mit dem Ort des Palimpsests verbunden ist – von Anfang an mit der Arbeit in enger Beziehung stand.

FC Bewusstsein, der unwiderstehliche Wille zu leben, die Unumkehrbarkeit des Lebens –

auch das ist die Bildrolle, das Abbild der Bildrolle. Aber wenn wir klug sind, führt uns der Horizont der Bildrolle sofort zur Idee der Vertikalität, zur Notwendigkeit der Vertikalität.

Meiner Ansicht nach gibt es einen Grund, warum das Kreuz in jeder Tradition vorkommt. Dies ist das Motiv, das wir in unserer Erfahrung und in der Erfahrung des Kunstschaffens finden: Das Drehbuch, das wir erhalten, ist horizontal, mechanisch. Wir gehen von einem Ding zum anderen über. Beim Palimpsest können wir etwas umschreiben. Wir können unsere Erfahrung vertikalisieren, sie nicht im mechanischen Fluss der Zeit anordnen, sondern in der individuellen Zeitlosigkeit der Arbeit, eines Augenblicks der Kontemplation. Ich glaube nicht an das ewige Leben, aber ich glaube an Zeitlosigkeit. Ich glaube, dass ein grundlegendes menschliches Bedürfnis darin besteht, mit Momenten der Zeitlosigkeit konfrontiert zu werden, und Gemälde können dies bieten.

PK Was für mich zu Beginn unserer Unterhaltung über das Palimpsest besonders offensicht-

lich war, ist die Horizontalität Deiner Malerei selbst, deren häufig bildrollenartige Qualität.

Wie bist Du dazu gekommen, vornehmlich querformatige Gemälde zu schaffen?

FC Als ich durch den Südwesten der Vereinigten Staaten fuhr und sah, wie sich der Horizont

vor mir ausbreitete, musste ich erstmals an eine Bildrolle denken. Aber es war in Indien, als ich mit den traditionellen Miniatur-Malern von Orissa zusammenarbeitete, dass ich mich in die horizontalen Doppelquadrate verliebte, das Format ihrer Bilder. In ein und derselben Phase meines Lebens hielt ich mich also eine Zeit lang im amerikanischen Südwesten und in Orissa auf – und an diesen weit voneinander entfernten Orten fiel mir beide Male plötzlich dieses Bild von Horizontalität auf. Aber was ist wirklich horizontal? Die Wände eines Zimmers können es sein, nicht wahr?

PK Gehen wir noch weiter in die Vergangenheit zurück. Du bist Italiener und seit Deiner

FC Ich glaube, er ist wesentlich. Die Verbindung zwischen einer Arbeit und der nächsten ist

Jugend hast Du große barocke Wandgemälde und auch Grabdenkmäler bewundert. Waren dies nicht sogar noch frühere Einflüsse, die Dich dazu anregten, die Möglichkeiten des horizontalen Formats zu erforschen?

PK Aber es gab noch frühere Einflüsse?

wesentlich. Es gibt immer Überreste – Überreste der einen Arbeit in der nächsten. Aber es wird nicht wirklich eine Endlosschleife daraus, sondern es fließt in eine Bildrolle. Wenn wir uns also in diesem Sinne wieder auf fernöstliche Traditionen beziehen, gab es im Japan des 17. Jahrhunderts Gedichte, die Rengai genannt wurden. Es waren feierliche Gedichte, bei denen jeder Dichter mehrere Verse schrieb und der nächste Dichter ihren Erzählfluss fortsetzen musste. Auf diese Art entwickelt sich auch meine Arbeit: Man öffnet eine Tür, und sie führt zu einem Ort. Ich halte es für sehr wichtig, dass die Dinge unrein gehalten werden sollten.

Ich fürchte mich vor Reinheit. Meiner Ansicht nach ist das, was übrig bleibt, oft vielsagender als das, was zentral ist – verstehst Du?

FC Die Affinität zur Bildrolle existiert seit den Anfängen meines Schaffens. Bruno Taut ist

PK Und darum geht es bei einem Palimpsest. Denn das Palimpsest soll eigentlich ausradiert

eine wesentlich frühere Arbeit, über 20 Meter Papier, auf die ich gezeichnet habe und die ich mit verschiedenfarbiger Erde eingerieben habe, die ich aus dem Garten der Theosophischen Gesellschaft in Madras, wo ich damals wohnte, gegraben habe. Ich glaube, in diesem Augenblick hatte die Idee der Bildrolle Bezüge zu fernöstlicher Kunst und ebenso zu dieser wundervollen Strategie des Verschwindens und Enthüllens. Wie Du weißt, steht der Großteil der fernöstlichen Kunst in dieser Hinsicht der Grabkunst näher, weil diese ebenfalls nicht zu sehen sein soll. Japanische Schriftrollen zum Beispiel sind nicht dafür gedacht, irgendwo zu hängen – sie werden verschlossen aufbewahrt und dann für einen besonderen Gast oder einen Kenner entschleiert. Und mir hat diese Idee des Geheimnisvollen seit jeher besonders gut gefallen.

Glaubst Du, das hat irgendetwas mit diesem Thema zu tun, oder handelt es sich nur um einen Zufall?

FC Wenn wir die Dinge zurückspulen, habe ich mit den Begräbnisbildern nach einem Besuch

der Gräber im Tal der Könige in Ägypten begonnen, wo es diese gewaltigen Korridore und endlosen bemalten Oberflächen gibt, die immer weiter und weiter verlaufen.

FC Nun, ich glaube nicht an Zufälle (lacht leise).

PK Du verwendest Schrift in Deinen Arbeiten.

FC Das geht auf die Anfangsjahre meiner Arbeit zurück. Als ich damals zu zeichnen begann,

PK Haben Deine Gemälde, auch die früheren, einen zeremoniellen Aspekt?

FC Ja. Ich habe von Anfang an gedacht – ich habe es einfach angenommen –, dass in unserer

Zeit Gemälde das Äquivalent zu rituellen Werkzeugen sind. Man baut also einen Altar, in unserem Fall einen unsichtbaren, aber dieser Altar ist eigentlich eine Kosmogonie. Er ist eine Darstellung der Welt, und die Werkzeuge sind die Instrumente, mit denen man sich auf diese Darstellung der Welt bezieht. Natürlich ist es in einer relativistischen Gesellschaft und in der relativistischen Welt, in der wir leben, ein weises Vorgehen, dieses Bedürfnis nach dem Nichtrelativen, nach dem Absoluten, nach dem Trost des wahren Wissens zu befriedigen – ein weises Vorgehen, das alles unter einem relativistischen Deckmantel zu präsentieren. Keine statischen Dogmen, sondern Konstellationen von Fragmenten, von nicht zusammenhängenden Aussagen, die enthüllen, sich entziehen, verbergen, aufdecken – alles nur, um ihre Instrumente, die Artefakte, in Bewegung zu halten.

PK Der Schriftsteller Thomas De Quincey, den Du an einem bestimmten Punkt in Deinem

Leben sehr geschätzt hast, war der Erste, der das Palimpsest als ein Ding und nicht als Prozess definierte. De Quincey dachte, dass die Beziehung zwischen der Schrift und der Oberfläche ineinander verwickelt sei – mit anderen Worten, in seinen Augen handelte es sich um zwei Dinge, die nicht miteinander verbunden sind, die sich aber irgendwie miteinander verwoben haben und begannen, einander innezuwohnen. Hat dieser Prozess des Verwickelns, Verfangens und Verknüpfens Deiner Meinung nach eine zentrale Bedeutung für Deine Arbeit?

schrieb ich eigentlich mehr, und dann gingen die Worte in Zeichnungen über. Das war der ursprüngliche Impuls in meinem Leben als Künstler – zu schreiben und vom Schreiben zum Bild zu wechseln. Viele Jahre später war ich zum echten Maler geworden, wenn man es so nennen will, aber die Sehnsucht nach Worten war immer noch sehr stark. Ich wollte zu den Worten zurückkehren, und so kamen diese Kollaborationen zustande.

PK Sind dies Gedanken, die man auf ein Gemälde wie Dictionary | Wörterbuch (1997) (S. 92)

anwenden könnte, auf welchem wir fast scherbenartige Formen sehen – Worte, die an die Oberfläche kommen und wieder auftauchen, die Andeutung einer Öffnung? Ich versuche zu verstehen …

FC Nun, manchmal bleiben die allerersten Impulse bestehen, die das frühe Werk hervor-

bringt. Aber wenn wir zum Palimpsest zurückkehren, ist es wiederum so, dass das, was darunter geschrieben ist, seinem Wesen nach nichts ist, was man tatsächlich sieht. Es stimmt, in Dictionary findet man einige Worte, aber was zählt ist der ursprüngliche Impuls der Arbeit, dass ich mir selbst eine Geschichte erzählen wollte. Doch dann hatte ich nicht die Geduld, sie aufzuschreiben, und diese Ungeduld drang in das Bild ein, das präziser und gemeinschaftlicher ist und jene Kraft der Harmonisierung besitzt, die mich so interessiert.

PK Was hat es mit einem Werktitel wie Black Shroud | Schwarzes Leichentuch (1984) (S. 112) auf

FC Der Titel geht auf Allen Ginsberg zurück. Er schrieb ein Gedicht White Shroud und dann

eines, das er Black Shroud nannte, und wir haben in beiden Fällen zusammengearbeitet. Wir haben zwei Bücher über die beiden erstellt. Es sind beides prophetische Träume, wenn Du so willst.

PK Geht es darin um Auferstehung?

jener Kräfte meinen, die nicht vorgeben, die Welt zu ordnen und zu verbessern, sondern denen es darum geht, sich an ihr zu erfreuen, dann könnte man meine Arbeiten als Historienmalerei betrachten. Sie halten ein mögliches Beziehungsfeld fest, inspiriert von all jenen kontemplativen Sprachen, die trotz der Attacken der Industriegesellschaft noch lebendig sind.

Deiner Arbeit, nicht wahr?

Zu keiner anderen Zeit hätten wir kontemplative Traditionen so von außen betrachten können wie heute. Mit von außen betrachten meine ich, dass wir zwar einerseits von ihnen abgeschnitten sind, andererseits aber auch die nie da gewesene Möglichkeit haben, jenseits von Aberglaube und Angst zu erfahren, wovon sie handeln. Also ja. Ich habe nie wirklich darüber nachgedacht, aber sollte jemand über die „Geschichte des Bewusstseins“ schreiben, über die Geschichte der Beziehung von Bewusstsein und der Darstellung von Bewusstsein, könnten diese Gemälde eine Seite in diesem Buch illustrieren.

FC Ja. Ja, und bei beiden Kooperationen wurde meine Hand leichter, um das Gewicht der

PK Selbst wenn sie so häufig Erzählungen über Dich selbst zu sein scheinen – Story of my

Poesie auszugleichen. Das Thema „Tod“ interessiert mich wirklich sehr, dennoch glaube ich nicht, dass meine Arbeit in einer Beziehung zum Tod steht. Meiner Meinung nach hat die ganze Kunst eine Beziehung zum Tod; schließlich ist Grabkunst der Ursprung von Kunst. Diese Verbindung wurde nicht ausgelöscht; sie existiert und wird durch immer neue Fragen ständig erneuert.

Country | Geschichte meines Landes (S. 126) oder A History of the Heart | Eine Geschichte des Herzens (S. 18) –, sind sie in gewisser Weise als eine Art Entfalten zu verstehen? Als ein Bezeugen?

FC Es geht darin um seine Mutter und den Tod seiner Mutter. Seine Mutter war eine Schlüs-

selfigur in seinen Erzählungen – eine labile Frau, die sehr viel gelitten hat.

PK Aber es geht dabei auch um Dich selbst, denn der Tod ist eines der zentralen Themen

PK Der Begriff Palimpsest wird ja auch im Zusammenhang mit der Erinnerung an ein Bild

verwendet. Was also nach außen hin wie ein Denkmal erscheint, kann auch ein sehr tiefes inneres und persönliches Erinnern sein. Würdest Du sagen, dass Du diese Technik gezielt anwendest, um so gewissermaßen unbewusste Bilder freizusetzen?

FC Richtig – ein Bezeugen, das sich auf der Akzeptanz zweier fundamentaler traditioneller

Glaubenssätze gründet, die in der gegenwärtigen Zeit vielleicht nicht besonders populär sind, aber dennoch existieren: Zunächst, dass jeder von uns eine vollständige Parabel ist, die für das gesamte Universum steht, so dass die individuelle Erfahrung als Ausgangsmaterial für all das genügt, was man wissen muss. Das ist ein grundlegendes Element jeder kontemplativen Tradition. Und zweitens, in wenigen einfachen Worten: „Wie oben, so unten.“ PK Die Ausstellung soll sich in chronologischer Weise entfalten, ohne dass die einzelnen

FC Ich bin in einer Zeit aufgewachsen, in der sich eine ganze Generation gemeinschaftlich

um Bewusstseinserweiterung bemüht hat. Und die Idee der Bewusstseinserneuerung war keine Utopie, sondern tatsächlich eine soziale und politische Praxis. Ich glaube, einer meiner ursprünglichen Impulse, Künstler zu werden, bestand darin, auf eine bestimmte, auf eine kompetente Art an dieser Erneuerung des Bewusstseins teilzuhaben. Aber ich wusste, dass man letztlich nur die Werkzeuge präsentieren kann, die verwendet werden, um auf diese Möglichkeit der Erneuerung hinzuweisen. Es ist eine sehr, sehr minimale Geste, aber sie ist sinnvoll.

PK Wir haben darüber gesprochen, warum Du diese Ausstellung Palimpsest genannt hast.

Betreibst Du eine neue Art von Historienmalerei?

FC Das ist eine gute Frage. Ich glaube, die Antwort lautet Ja und Nein. Es sind keine Historien-

bilder, zumindest sofern wir unter Historie die Geschichte des Willens oder der Macht verstehen.

FC Alle meine Arbeiten haben sich als Sammlungen, Sequenzen und Bildrollen entwickelt,

bei denen jedes Bild zum nächsten führte. Was diese spezielle Ausstellung betrifft, so haben wir hier Stücke aus all diesen verschiedenen Sammlungen herausgenommen und aus den einzelnen Stücken eine neue Sammlung erstellt. Es ist also weniger eine Präsentation als vielmehr ein Experiment, in dem es darum geht, eine Frage zu stellen und dann abzuwarten und zu schauen, ob ein neuer Diskurs sichtbar wird, wenn man ein Fragment aus einem bestehenden Diskurs extrapoliert. Wenn diese Gemälde Äquivalente visueller Instrumente und Teile einer organischen Betrachtungsweise des Lebens sind, dann sollte die Antwort Ja lauten.

Selbst wenn sich die Betrachtungsweise nicht zusammenfassen lässt, zumindest nicht in einer Ausstellung, so lassen sich ihre organische Natur, und ihre Zusammenhänge beobachten.

Francesco Clemente in conversation with Pamela Kort PK When did you first come across the word palimpsest?

I imagine, given that I belong to the last generation that received a classical education, I must have encountered the word in school. But I suspect that it’s used more frequently in Italian, as it appears to be an uncommon English word.

Did the concept attract you because you find languages intriguing? You enjoyed learning Latin; is that correct?

PK

I did, for many years. There was always something enigmatic about the story of the palimpsest, about the story of a text that gets erased, gets rewritten. The layering was attractive to me then, and remains now; it resonates with the view I have of my work as a fragmented narrative that rewrites itself as it goes along. Bear in mind that I come from Italy, and that Giorgio De Chirico wrote at the bottom of what is maybe his most poignant self portrait, “Quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est?” What shall I be able to love, if not the unspoken mystery of things?

Are you aware that the majority of palimpsests discovered – there haven’t been all that many – were found in Italy?

PK

FC I didn’t know that. But I guess if I think of it, the word palimpsest in Italian is also an ironic notation of something ancient, very complicated, and difficult to approach.

PK

But when did you really come into contact with the significance of the word palimpsest?

I don’t know that I ever ‘came into contact’ with the word. I don’t know that I’ve ever ‘come into contact’ with any word. As a painter, I tend to look at words in a more pictorial way. This can be disconcerting for a literally-oriented person who thinks that words are words and mean what they mean. But for me, a word has a more atmospheric value. ‘Palimpsest’ seems to have a certain gravitas. It has weight. There is a mystery to it. There is an austerity to it. Part of the show is a series of three long, long scrolls – three 18-meter long watercolors.

A palimpsest is not a scroll per se, but invokes the idea of a work that has been rolled and that has been opened and that has been continuous in length.

FC

Now, that’s interesting to me, because the word has this meaning of erasing but it also has the meaning of inscribing. I was wondering if this back-and-forth process is part of your manner of working?

PK

FC Yes. I’ve always thought that there are painters who are builders, who accumulate what they make and manufacture, and there are painters who are more like sweepers, who clean up. I’ve always seen myself as belonging to the second category. My objective in painting is to clean up, to remove, to eliminate, to wash. I have the same attitude toward ‘the line’ as I have toward ‘the word.’ The lines are meant to indicate the other lines that you don’t see, rather than to be taken literally. There’s a form of imbalance in my work which once made someone say I know nothing of composition, which I thought was very amusing as it’s probably true. On the other hand, it’s very distinctive, how I move across the limits of the canvas, across the paper.

Isn’t it so that the sweeping process you just described as characteristic of your method is similar to the one that brings the palimpsest into view? It’s scraping. It’s rubbing, rather than building. Do you want to comment on this?

PK

Certainly. I don’t literally scrape and rub when I paint, but the way the paint is applied is less of a brushstroke than a trace of brushstroke. It’s exactly like sweeping the ground.

You have this thin layer of dust that’s still sitting there, and that’s the painting.

at MADRE in Naples, we talked a lot about how important the city’s archeological heritage is to you. I recall in particular how drawn you felt to the image of the diver in Paestum. Talk to me about this in relationship to how a palimpsest works, in terms of diving through layers of experience?

Absolutely. The palimpsest in relation to archeological layering is a wonderful metaphor for how I work with iconography: referring constantly to traditional images – i.e. images that have or traditionally had the power of healing, the power of harmonizing human beings to themselves and others – but without the context. I’m not a mystic; I’m not a contemplator.

I’m a contemporary artist, so I use traditional material and rewrite it for the audience. But I never provide a final text. I never provide a final…

PK

Script?

Script! So it really is a layering: unveiling, veiling, saying, unsaying. I think “shifting” is the key word here; it’s very important to constantly shift your view, the viewer’s view, to make clear that this is not religion. These are just artifacts related to the experience we have of the world now, in our time right now, and that’s it.

FC

Beautiful; an image as a trace of something rather than the thing itself. Is it for you a matter of allowing something to come up to the surface, the way a palimpsest somehow pops up into view? Do you think that’s an element of your painting?

PK

PK

Yes, it is, definitely. In these paintings the attention paid to the ground is equal if not superior to the attention paid to what is applied to the ground. The same is true for the iconography. There is never appropriation in the work, never a literal quoting from traditional iconography – where traditional doesn’t mean conservative or old, but traditional with a capital “T”: belonging to the contemplative and gnostic traditions that exist all over the world. Instead, the references are actualized exactly as is in a palimpsest: by erasing in the mind and in the image the original story, and re-writing, re-telling, re-painting it.

PK

To what degree would you say that your works are in a sense written in paint?

FC I should add one more element to what we were saying before, which is related to the formalities of the paintings, to the actual appearance of the paintings. There is a preoccupation with openness. The ambition to make work that is open without sacrificing detail and simplicity, work that is not taken for granted, and that is not literally simple. There are all these dilemmas and questions related to the idea of the palimpsest: of having a pre-existing score and getting rid of it and re-writing it.

You know that the word palimpsest also has a geological connotation: it can indicate a geomorphic surface that has not been completely erased by marine transgressions. When we were working together in 2004 on the exhibition, Clemente: Shipwreck with the Spectator, PK

As you were speaking just now, I was thinking that there’s also a psychological dimension to the word palimpsest. The record it proffers is very different than a Freudian decoding of experience. I was wondering whether you wanted to comment on your early interest in people like R.D. Laing, and his affiliation with the anti-psychiatry movement? Obviously in this show the term palimpsest implies the fluctuations of your life, your experiences and your recollections of them, and how these function in your paintings.

R. D. Laing was very close to Trungpa, who was the Vajirayana teacher of Allen Ginsberg.

Trungpa came up with a wonderful definition of our experience of self and other as the experience of “the continuity of discontinuity.” My ambition is that both my life and my work can be expressions of the acceptance of the continuity of discontinuity, and can be a manifestation of freedom. The moment you accept that there is no continuum; that there is no reality to a solid notion of self; that there is no reality to the historical narrative of art; that all of these are mechanically contrived tools that serve one purpose or another, or should I say the designs of one class against another – the moment you accept this, you can be free.

FC

It seems to me that from the beginning, though, you are often the subject of your own work. For example, let’s take the 3 Polaroids from 1972 (p. 92). Even there you seem to be interested in the process of obscuring and revealing. Is this something that carries through the whole exhibition? Often what seems to be a self-portrait isn’t just that at all. How can we understand that hard-to-pin-down element in connection with the palimpsest, as something that is underneath and above at the same time?

That shifting viewpoint you find in the exhibition is a translation of something that exists in our experience, because either we are the witnesses or the witnessed. Either we objectify ourselves, or we act. There is nothing in between. So when it comes to approaching a painting or an object, again, there aren’t really that many choices. Either you objectify the knowledge that you believe you have – and then the result will be that limpid iconography, those images in the body of my work which invite a remembrance, a comforting familiarity, the clarity and seduction that is more easily shared by the audience – or you simply act to absorb and be absorbed by the self that you are, and make something without knowing where it’s going.

from one thing to another. With the palimpsest, we can rewrite. We are able to verticalize our experience, to place our experience not in the mechanical flux of time but in the individual timelessness of work, of a moment of contemplation. I don’t believe in eternal life but I do believe in timelessness. I do believe that it is a vital human need to be confronted with pauses of timelessness, and paintings can provide that.

There is, I believe, a minority of paintings of this kind in the body of my work. They are fewer because this is a harder way both to live and to make things. It is also a more inaccessible stance. On the other hand, I am very fond of these “unpopular” works; they are the fibers of a thread woven into the work, a thread of formlessness. I don’t want to call it abstraction, but formlessness. As with a palimpsest, to write something new in your life you have to erase what has been written for you by someone else. This someone else is always writing, so our life is this constant struggle to erase what has been written so we can write our own story.

FC I first became aware of the scroll while driving across the Southwest of the United States, aware of the unfolding of the horizon. But it was in India, collaborating with traditional miniature painters from Orissa, that I fell in love with horizontal double squares, the format of their work. All of a sudden, in that same period in my life, I was spending time in the American Southwest and in Orissa, and being reminded in such distant places of this image of horizontality. But what is really horizontal? The walls of a room can be, no?

FC

One of the things that seemed most obvious to me when we started talking about the palimpsest was the horizontality of your painting itself, its frequent scroll-like nature.

How do you think you got into this practice of making primary horizontal paintings?

PK

But going back to your more distant past. You’re Italian. Since adolescence you admired large baroque wall paintings and funerary monuments too. Weren’t these even earlier factors that encouraged you to explore the possibilities of working in a horizontal format?

PK

PK When I first got to know your work I thought the funerary paintings were such an unusual break. But the more we’re talking about this, the more I see that the idea of resurrection or subterranean space – which is related to the place of the palimpsest – has had to with the work from the beginning.

Again, we’re talking about layering. The most immediate layers one encounters as a human being are underground, ground, above ground. The subterranean, the superficial, the ethereal. I’ve always asked myself where do the works I make come from? And I’ve always liked to imagine that these works don’t belong to me, an individual artist, with an individual story, with an individual problematic. I’ve always wanted to imagine that the works belong, if not to a civilization, at least to a place in space, and that I am simply unearthing the material from the different places I find it. Some of it underground, some of it on the ground, and some of it I have to catch as it’s flying above my head.

FC

Those thoughts are in a way primary motifs in your work. Take, for example, what seem to be thousands of pebbles in one of your largest works, Sky (1984) (p. 92). Isn’t such an image deeply connected to a palimpsest because it gives form in a sense to what is cast up? Do you see your work like that? As a stream? It washes free?

PK

Rewinding things, I began the funerary paintings after a visit to the tomb of the kings in Egypt, where you see these tremendous corridors and these endless painted surfaces that go on and on and on.

FC

PK

The affinity with the scroll is there from the beginning. Bruno Taut is a much earlier work, more than twenty meters of paper which I drew and rubbed with various colored earth I dug from the garden of the Theosophical Society in Madras, where I lived at the time.

I think in that moment the idea of the scroll had relations with oriental art and with, again, this wonderful strategy of absconding and revealing. As you know, most oriental art in that way is closer to funerary art because it’s not meant to be seen. All of the Japanese scrolls are not meant to hang anywhere. They are kept away and then unveiled for a particularly special guest or for a connoisseur and I was very much in love with that idea of secrecy.

PK

Consciousness, the irresistible wish to live, the irreversibility of life: this also is the scroll, the image of the scroll. But the horizon of the scroll, if we are wise, immediately leads us to the image of verticality, to the necessity of verticality. I mean, there is a reason why the cross exists in every tradition. This is the motif we find both in our experience and in the experience of making art: the script that we are given is horizontal, mechanical. We go

But there were earlier ones?

Do the paintings also, even the earlier ones, have a ceremonial aspect?

FC

Yes. I’ve always thought from the very beginning – I simply assumed – that paintings are the equivalent in our time of ritual implements. So you build an altar, an invisible altar in our case, but the altar is really a cosmogony. It is a representation of the world and the implements are the tools that you use to relate to this representation of the world. Of course,

in a relativistic society and in the relativistic world we live in, the wise way to satisfy this need for what is not relative, for the absolute, for the comfort of true knowledge – the wise way to present all of this is to present it under a relativistic disguise. Not static dogmas, but constellations of fragments, of non-coherent statements, again revealing, absconding, hiding, uncovering, all of it to maintain the implements, the artifacts, in a state of flux.

again, as we go back to the palimpsest, the character of the underwriting is that it is not something you actually see. Yes, in Dictionary, you do find some words but what matters is that the original impulse of the work was to tell a story to myself and that I didn’t have the patience to go through the writing and that broke into the impatience of the image, which is more concise and more communal and has the power of harmonization I am interested in.

PK Thomas De Quincey, a writer you greatly respected at one point in your life, was actually the first to define the palimpsest as a thing, not as a process. He actually thought that the relationship between writing and surface was involuted, meaning that they were unrelated things that somehow got entangled, enmeshed and began to inhabit one another. Do you see this meshing, entangling, involuted process as central to your work?

PK

I think it’s essential. The connection between one work and the next is essential. There are always remains, remains of one work, in the next. But it doesn’t really go into a loop; it goes into a scroll. So in that sense, again, if we refer to oriental traditions, in seventeenth century Japan there were poems called rengai. They were celebrative poems where each poet would write a number of verses and the next poet would have to continue their narrative.

That’s the way the work develops. You open one door and it leads to one place and I think it’s very important that things should be kept impure. I’m afraid of purity. I think what is left over is many times more revealing than what is central, you know?

PK

FC

And that is what a palimpsest is, because the palimpsest is supposed to be erased, and then it comes back. What about the idea of collaboration? One of the things we talked about is your close relationships with writers, poets. Do you think that has anything to do with this theme, or is that just a coincidence?

PK

FC

Well, I don’t think anything is a coincidence (laughs lightly).

PK

You use writing in your work.

What about a work like Black Shroud (1984) (p. 112)? Can you comment on that?

That comes from Allen Ginsberg. He wrote a poem called White Shroud, then he wrote one called Black Shroud, and we collaborated on both. We made two books on both. They are both prophetic dreams, if you want.

FC

Are they about resurrection?

They are about his mother and the death of his mother. And his mother was a key figure in his narrative, a woman who was unstable and who suffered a great deal.

FC

PK

But they are about you, too, because death is one of the key themes in your work, right?

Yes. Yes, and in both of these collaborations my hand got lighter to balance the weight of the poetry. But definitely I do have an interest in death. I don’t think my work has a relationship with death. I think art has a relationship with death. I mean the origin of art is funerary.

This link has not been erased; it’s there, and continuously gets renewed with new questions.

FC

You know that the term palimpsest is also involved with the idea of memory of an image.

So that what seems to be an outer memorial can also be a deeply internal and personal memorizing. Do you think it’s a technique you use deliberately to sort of try to free up unconscious images?

PK

I grew up in a time where an expansion of consciousness was actually the communal effort of a generation. And the idea of renewal of consciousness was not a utopia but actually a social and political practice. I think that one of the original impulses for me to be an artist was to participate in a specific way, in a competent way in this renewal of consciousness.

But I knew that all you can do is to present tools that can be used to indicate this possibility of renewal. It’s a very, very minimal gesture. But it’s useful.

FC

That stems from the formative time of my work because when I began to draw, what I was really doing was writing and then the words would break into drawing. So this has been the original impulse in my life as an artist: to write and to break from the writing into image.

Many years later I found myself as a legitimate painter, if that’s what you want to call it, but the nostalgia for words was very strong. I wanted to go back to words, and that’s how those collaborations came to be.

FC

We’ve been talking about why you’ve named this exhibition “Palimpsest.” Is what you are doing a new kind of history painting?

PK

Are these thoughts that one might apply to a painting like Dictionary (1997) (p. 92), where we see almost shard-like forms that are words coming to the surface and reappearing and the suggestion of an opening? I’m trying to understand …

PK

FC

Well, sometimes the very primary impulses originating the early work stay on. But

It’s a good question. I think the answer is yes and no. These are not history paintings if by history we mean a history of will or of power. In that sense, the true history paintings are landscapes. It is looking at landscapes that men state their will to order and coagulate the

fluidity of things. But if by history we mean a history of consciousness, or of those faculties that don’t pretend to order and better the world but rather to enjoy it, then these works could be seen as history paintings. They chronicle one possible field of relations inspired by all those contemplative languages still alive in spite of the onslaught perpetrated by industrial society.

In no other time could we have looked at contemplative traditions from the outside as we look at them now. To look at them from the outside means we are cut off from them, in a sense, but in another sense, we have an unprecedented opportunity to understand what they are about, beyond superstition and fear. So, yes. I had never really thought about it, but definitely, if someone were to write a “History of Consciousness,” a history of the relation between consciousness and the representations of consciousness, these paintings could illustrate a page of it.

So even though they so often seem to be narratives of yourself – Story of my country (p. 126) or A history of the heart (p. 18) – they’re in a sense to be understood as an unfolding?

A witnessing?

PK

A witnessing, yes, one based on the acceptance of two very fundamental traditional beliefs that may not be popular at this moment in time, but they are there. First: that each one of us is a complete parable that counts for the entire universe, so one’s individual experience is enough to be source material for anything that needs to be known. This is a basic tenet of any contemplative tradition. And second, in few simple words, “as it is above so it is below.”

FC

You wanted this show to unfold both in a chronological manner and with the paintings not isolated as such. Can you explain the philosophy behind this exhibition?

PK

FC All of my work has developed as collections and sequences and scrolls, where every image led into the next. So in the case of this particular exhibition, what we’ve done is extrapolate items from all these different collections and make a collection of the extrapolated items.

It’s not so much a “showing” as an experiment, asking a question, then watching and seeing if in extrapolating a fragment from a discourse another discourse can be seen. If these paintings are the equivalent of visual implements, and part of an organic view of life, the answer should be yes. Even if the view cannot be summed up, at least not in one show, the organic nature of it, the coherence of it can be observed.

Biografie

Biography Francesco Clemente’s œuvre spans four decades and has achieved international acclaim.

Francesco Clementes Œuvre umspannt vier Jahrzehnte und genießt internationale Anerkennung.

In den 1970er Jahren lebte er einige Jahre in Indien und stellte Arbeiten aus, die sein Interesse für die kontemplativen Traditionen des Subkontinents widerspiegeln. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Alba und ihren vier Kindern ging Clemente 1981 nach New York. Seine Gemälde, Zeichnungen, Druckgrafiken und illustrierten Bücher wurden in Ausstellungen an verschiedenen internationalen Kunstinstitutionen gezeigt, darunter in der Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, der Nationalgalerie in Berlin, dem Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, dem Art Institute of Chicago und dem Dia Center for the Arts in New York.

Throughout the 1970s he exhibited works that reflected his interest in the contemplative traditions of India, where he lived for several years.

In 1981 Clemente moved to New York with his wife, Alba, and their four children.

His paintings, drawings, prints and illustrated books were featured in shows at numerous international venues including the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; the Nationalgalerie, Berlin; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Dia Center for the Arts, New York.

In den 1990er Jahren präsentierten das Philadelphia Museum of Art, die Royal Academy of Arts in London, das Centre Pompidou in Paris und das Sezon Museum in Tokio Werkschauen von Clemente; 1999/2000 zeigten das Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York und das Guggenheim Bilbao eine große Retrospektive seiner Arbeiten.

Through the 1990s, surveys of his work were exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Royal Academy of the Arts, London; the Pompidou Center, Paris; and the Sezon Museum, Tokyo. In 1999/2000, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Guggenheim Bilbao organized a major retrospective of Clemente’s work.

Clemente war an zahlreichen Gemeinschaftsprojekten beteiligt, hat mit Jean-Michel Basquiat und Andy Warhol zusammengearbeitet und Gedichte von Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg, John Wieners und René Ricard illustriert.

He has participated in numerous collaborative projects, painting with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, and illuminating poetry by Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg, John Wieners and René Ricard.

Francesco Clemente ist Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Letters.
