The 109th Lake Bluff 4th of July Parade celebrates America’s struggle to become and remain independent by recognizing how learning to read and receiving a quality education provide knowledge and power and pave the path to freedom, independence and choice in life. In celebration of the 150 years students have been attending school in Lake Bluff, and in appreciation of the profound impact that teachers and staff have on our children, we have selected the Lake Bluff Schools’ Teachers and Staff as the marshal for this year’s parade. We also recognize the significant contributions many other local organizations provide toward our students’ academic and future success, including: the Lake Bluff Public Library, Lake Bluff School District 65, Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence, Lake Bluff PTO, Forest Bluff School, Park District’s Lake Bluff Preschool, Reading Power and Bernie’s Book Bank.

The Lake Bluff 4th of July Committee hosts the 4th of July Parade. But it takes substantial cooperation, coordination and assistance from the entire village and surrounding community to make the parade the extraordinary event it has become. The committee is grateful for the village administration, staff and public works employees; Lake Bluff Police Department, Lake Bluff Volunteer Fire Department and Lake County Reserve Sheriff’s Deputies; Lake Bluff Park District; Boy Scout Troop 42; and all friends and neighbors who volunteer time and energy leading up to and throughout the parade itself.

The committee also expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to the individuals, families, groups and businesses that fund this great parade through donations, advertisements, sponsorships and parade entry fees. This support makes it possible for us to subsidize the marching bands and performing units also appearing in the parade. Your generosity is what allows this wonderful parade to not only continue, but to improve year after year.

Let’s all enjoy the 4th of July and celebrate the good fortune we have to be living in a country that can celebrate the struggle its forefathers endured to create the freedom and independence we cherish today. See you on July 4th.

Vehicle access in Lake Bluff is limited the day of the parade. We suggest visitors plan to arrive early and residents avoid driving as much as possible.

Here are some guidelines to help you plan the day:

Avoid parade line-up route and parade route streets as they will be closed to traffic prior to the parade start.

Avoid E. Sheridan Place in particular as this is the entry way for parade entrants.

ĂŞ PAR ADE DAY DETAILS ĂŞ 1. Participants line up in front of “Maeveryâ€? on Scranton Ave. at 9:15 a.m. You will see a sign marking beginning of parade line that runs along Scranton Ave. 2. Parents write their cell number on the inside of children’s bracelet provided before the parade begins.

3. Parade starts at 9:50 a.m. Follow the pace cart down Scranton Ave. 4. Walk with your child, or meet them at the two stops on the route.

5. The first stop is the Mini-Stop. It is three blocks from the parade start at the northwest corner of Scranton and Glen. Look for the “Mini-Stop� sign.

6. The second and final stop is in front of the Middle School on E. Sheridan Place.

Distinguished Parade Review Officer ê

Colonel Edward J. Debish U.S. Marine Corps, Commanding Officer, Marine Air Control Group 48 Colonel Debish was commissioned a second lieutenant after graduating from the University of Oklahoma in August 1994. After completing the Basic School in 1995 and the Basic Communications Officers Course in 1996, he served as the Operational Communications platoon commander and S-6 officer for Marine Air Control Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Camp Pendleton, California, from October 1995 to December 1998. During this tour, he was promoted to captain.

From December 1998 to June 2002, he served as a Weapons Tactics Instructor and Communications Division Head at Marine Aviation Weapons Tactics Squadron 1 at MCAS Yuma, AZ. From July 2002 to June 2005, he was assigned to the 1st Force Service Support Group, Camp Pendleton, California. He served as the Information Systems Management Officer in the G-6 section from July 2002 to December 2002. He served as the S-6 officer for Combat Service Support Battalion 18 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 1 from January to July 2003. He also served as the Executive Officer from August 2003 to May 2004 and Commanding Officer from June 2004 to June 2005 for Communications Company, 1st FSSG during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-1 (February-September 2004). During this tour he was promoted to major.

From July 2005 to June 2008, Major Debish was assigned a joint duty assignment at the Joint Information Operations Warfare Command, US Strategic Command, at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. As an information operations planner, he deployed in support of Joint Task Force—Iraq to Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 06-2 from September to December 2006 and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 07-2 from August to December 2007. In 2008, he attended and graduated the Joint and Combined Warfighting School at the Joint Force Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia.

From July 2008 to June 2009 Major Debish attended and graduated the Army's Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During that time, he also earned a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University.

From July 2009 to May 2012, Major Debish was assigned to Combat Development and Integration, HQMC where he served as capabilities and integrations officer and as the deputy branch head for Capabilities Branch, Command and Control Integration Division. During this tour he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

From June 2012 to Dec 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Debish served as the Commanding Officer for Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Following command, Lieutenant Colonel Debish served as the Executive Officer, Marine Air Control Group 38 from January 2014 to June 2014.

From July 2014 to June 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Debish attended and graduated the Marine Corps War College, MCB Quantico, Virginia. During that time, he earned a Master of Strategic Studies.

From July 2015 to June 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Debish served as a Military Faculty Advisor at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, MCB Quantico, Virginia.

From July 2016 to June 2018, Colonel Debish served as the AC/S G-6, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, at MCAS Miramar, California. During this tour he was promoted to colonel.

From June 2018 to May 2019, Colonel Debish served as the AC/S G-6, III Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan.

From June 2019 to present, Colonel Debish is currently serving as the Commanding Officer for Marine Air Control Group 48, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois.

Colonel Debish is married to Barbara and they have two children; Ryan (18 years old) and Tyler (15 years old). Lastly, he is a joint-qualified officer, whose personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

ê Parade Marshal ê lake Bluff Schools’ Teachers and Staff For 150 years, students have been attending school in Lake Bluff. The village’s original school district was established in 1869 and soon after a oneroom schoolhouse was built on the northeast corner of Green Bay Road and Route 176. Today, the Lake Bluff Schools educate more than 900 students and are consistently placed in the top 10 percent of all schools in the state of Illinois. To honor the long-standing institution of school in Lake Bluff and to celebrate the achievements of its modern-day schools, Lake Bluff Schools’ Teachers and Staff were selected as this year’s parade marshal.

Over the years, there have been many different buildings in which Lake Bluff students have attended school, including: Rockland School, which was the one-room school house that was also known as the Little White House; East School, originally built as a four-room brick building in 1895 and used until it was torn down in the 2000s; a Junior High School that opened in 1955; West

School, which opened in Knollwood in 1962; Central School, which opened on Green Bay in 1966; and Lake Bluff Elementary School, a beautiful and spacious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building built in 2009.

The first PTA meeting was held in 1914. The organization now operates as a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), providing parent involvement opportunities, teacher and staff support and educational enrichment for students. The Alliance for Excellence, a funding foundation that awards grants to help bring innovative tools, materials and programs to Lake Bluff classrooms, was founded in 1989.

In 1992, the Junior High was renamed Lake Bluff Middle School and it received the Illinois Department of Education’s Excellence in Education Award. The middle school was dramatically transformed in 2016 and is now modernized for 21st Century education with vibrant and dynamic learning spaces centered around the Library Media Center, a STEAM Lab, science laboratories and presentation stairs.

While the history of the schools is interesting, it’s what is going on inside the buildings that is extraordinary. Lake Bluff schools are full of quality teachers and staff that directly impact student achievement. In 2018, both Lake Bluff Elementary School and Lake Bluff Middle School received the top designation of “exemplary” from the Illinois State Board of Education, based on a variety of measurements, which include: the schools’ student educational growth over time; student achievement at time of assessments; rates of chronic absenteeism; surveys of students, parents and teachers on quality and character of school life; and student growth in developing English language skills. The “exemplary” designation applies to every student group and sub-group across both schools. It is a direct result of the dedicated work of teachers, staff, students, parents and the community as they move toward the goal of achieving District 65’s vision of Excellence in Education, Enthusiasm for Life, Every Student, Every Day.

Lake Bluff’s Volunteer Fire Department hosts the 44th Annual Fireman’s Ball the night of July 3 at the Lake Bluff Park District and also invites many fire companies to join the parade. They provide emergency medical services for the parade Kiwanis Club of Lake Bluff & Lake Forest will serve its 48th Annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast on the Village Green from 7:00am-9:45am. All funds raised are donated to local charities. Kiwanis will hold its 4th annual hamburger and hotdog cookout on the Village Green after the parade.

Boy Scout Troop 42 hand deliver the Parade Books, volunteer in the Children’s Parade, assist the American Legion Color Guard, and share a parade spot with Cub Scout Pack 42.

The Park District float features summer campers and staff. The golf course, pool, and beach are all fully staffed for a festive 4th. Again this year, the Park District will host a band at the beach.

The Village of Lake Bluff has made the 4th of July holiday a success by assisting in planning efforts, ensuring public safety for all the events, and providing hands-on operational support.

The Lake Bluff Public Library is not only the nucleus of what expands us as individuals—learning, imagination, exposure—it is connective tissue for our community. From vivid, colorful story times on the rug to thoughtful, authorled discussions of the issues facing our village, nation and planet, everyone can find growth at the library. This year, the Lake Bluff Public Library celebrates its Centennial, and offers patrons a chance to reflect on its rich history of literacy and community. The library was founded by the Lake Bluff Women’s Club in 1919, as a memorial to its war veterans. Since then, it has taken many forms in many — 58 —

locations—starting in Village Hall with a mere 500 books donated by W.N. Roundy.

THE FREADOM OF LITERACY Since inception, libraries have been the great equalizers—their doors open to the public, regardless of age, socio-economics, chosen language or literacy level.

They serve as safe havens for learning, studying and communicating in a shared, respectful space dedicated to absorbing new information. The power of literacy brings possibility to what seems impossible and can transport us to places we never imagined.

The Lake Bluff Public Library’s distinct role in reading and learning can certainly be attributed to the inviting, playful children’s library, where kids can create their own puppet show, utilize learning devices and even read to soft, cuddly (incredibly tolerant) service dogs. Yet, the guiding force in the growth of its young readers stems from the infectious curiosity and enthusiasm of the library staff. Rarely stumped by a question or request, they’re known to share their thoughts on the greatest stories and storytellers, often challenging

While the library places emphasis on youth services, there are growth opportunities for all ages and stages.

“Being able to find stories, facts, and data is THE essential ability in the Information Age,” said Eric Bailey, Lake Bluff Public Library Director. “No skill helps you do that better than reading, which is why today’s readers are tomorrow’s leaders.”

FUTURE-PROOF, 100 YEARS LATER Today’s Lake Bluff Public Library has evolved to embrace digitization and new ways of learning. Supported by the Friends of the Lake Bluff Library fundraising efforts, the library offers both desktop and mobile device access to conduct research or to play fun and engaging learning games.

Library programs, developed by the energetic staff, touch varying levels of aptitudes and interests, and include a cookbook club, adult and youth reading clubs, LEGO club, pajama story time, guest author discussions and so much more. Last

year, the Friends of the Lake Bluff Library generously donated the Book Bicycle, which was designed to facilitate book checkouts outside the building. The Book Bicycle can be found at various events around town, particularly the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market on Fridays.

“Fundraising by the Friends of the Lake Bluff Library is essential to evolving with the changing times and ensuring we are growing along with patron needs,” said Eileen Laack, Friends of the Lake Bluff Library President. “The Book Bicycle is a perfect metaphor for our role in community literacy; reading can take you anywhere.”

At 100 years old, the Lake Bluff Public Library remains the intellectual heart of Lake Bluff. No doubt, it thrives on the continued support of our tightly woven community. I n n o vat i v e Learning in Lake Bluff 30 Years of the Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence

It started as a “SOS” 30 years ago. A call to the parents of Lake Bluff School District 65 students seeking help to “save our [beloved] Steinway” piano that was in desperate need of repair. The school community rallied with funds, the piano was fixed, and the Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence was formed.

That was 1989. Today, the school community is still rallying to support the Alliance for Excellence, though the alliance’s role has evolved from a “fixer” to an “innovator” according to Mark Rickmeier, president of the nonprofit foundation.

“The alliance provides an opportunity for Lake Bluff teachers to be creative with their thinking and have a ‘go’ at introducing innovative and new concepts to the students at school.”

The Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence has two grant cycles during the school year.

All District 65 teachers are invited to submit applications. Since 2015, the Alliance for Excellence has fulfilled more than 70 grant requests and has awarded more than $150,000 in funding.

Alliance grants span all grades and educational disciplines at both Lake Bluff Elementary School and Lake Bluff Middle School. Recent grants include: a maker space (a collaborative work space for making, learning, exploring and sharing) for the elementary school; new books to meet diverse readers interests; guest visits from favorite authors; technology to support the middle school STEAM lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math); and advancements for the music program.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALLIANCE GRANTS 3-D GOGGLES: An alliance grant equipped the middle school social studies classes with virtual reality goggles. The 3-D goggles are an innovative way to expand the students’ learning experience beyond traditional classroom walls. During class, students now have the opportunity to “travel” around the world or to “go back in time” to see how things looked during an ancient civilization in comparison to modern day.

ART: The elementary school art department was awarded funding for a new electric kiln to replace the existing small, broken down kiln. The new kiln makes it possible for students in every grade to craft clay projects. It also allows the students to design their projects without size limitations. The electric kiln is safer, and it results in less breakage and fewer flaws.

MUSIC: The middle school’s music department was awarded a grant to overhaul the chorus classroom. The funding allowed the music teacher, Ann Cvitkovic, to have a new sound system installed and to purchase a hybrid Yamaha piano to support the singers during chorus rehearsals. The piano not only fills the classroom with the appropriate amount of sound, it also has the ability to transpose, to provide additional keyboard sounds and to MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) record onto a flash drive at the touch of a button.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SKILLS: Kindergarten teacher Erin Peckler received a grant to support a social/emotional-learning literature program. Through the use of “read-aloud books,” kindergarten teachers can engage their students and creatively teach how-to skills to be a learner in the classroom, make friends, communicate and recognize feelings, problem solve and manage emotions, ask for help, treat others, play, take turns and share.

READING: The LBMS Library was recently awarded a grant to purchase new eReaders that provide students access to ebooks and audiobooks from both the Lake Bluff Pubic Library and the middle school library. The eReaders are of great benefit to English language learners, providing support in a number of different languages. Also, struggling readers now have the opportunity to privately read books at appropriate reading levels without the stigma of being seen reading “elementary” books.

MINDFULLNESS: Elementary school social worker Jen Perlis-Glassman received a grant for a site-license subscription to the Mind Yeti app, a classroom-based mindfulness program. The app teaches students to be aware of their minds and bodies. It helps them calm down, focus better and take a purposeful pause in order to be more active learners.

STORYTELLING TO INCREASE IMPACT Investing in innovative and educational excellence requires partnerships with school administrators, teachers and organizations like the PTO (which has co-funded multiple grant requests), along with funding from families, community members and local businesses. The Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence started hosting “storytelling” events in order to spread the message about its mission and to encourage others to develop a “think, design, adapt, innovate” mindset.

One such event—the Marshmallow Design Challenge—has now been held for two years, and the 1st-3rd grade student teams have consistently performed well. The challenge, based on a TED Talk, pits students against parents.

The teams are tasked with building the tallest free-standing structure—using 20 spaghetti sticks, one yard of tape, one yard of string and one marshmallow—in a timeframe of 18 minutes.

“The student teams’ initial designs fail and fail again, but from this failure comes creative thinking, playful collaboration, prototyping and ultimately successful designs,” explains Rickmeier. “That thinking is what the alliance encourages teachers to do with their grant requests. We want them to feel supported, encourage innovation, broaden horizons and have the freedom [without public budget constraints] to introduce new ideas in the classrooms.”ê MM To learn more about the alliance or about its tools and programs, visit lb65alliance.org.

Women s Club ê ê ê ê Celebrating 115 Years ê ê ê ê During the first official meeting—a tea at the home of Mrs. Mary Tucker—on September 27, 1904, the 11 women present agreed to a pledge: “If there is any kind word I can say or any good deed I can do, let me do it now and not neglect or defer it, as I shall not pass this way again.”

The original members came together with the primary mission of finding philanthropic endeavors to serve the community, but there was also focus on home economics, child rearing and intellectual improvement, in proportion to women’s roles at that time. It was a social club that began in member’s homes, and as membership grew, moved to Village Hall, and eventually to the Methodist church.

Child care was provided so that the ladies could attend regularly. Meeting topics during those first years ranged from Shakespeare and Milton, to weaving and fabrics and to music and art in the home. Children from Lake Bluff schools entertained the club with piano recitals and recitations.

As the twice-monthly teas continued, and membership grew steadily, the club became more organized and intent in their purpose, adopting by-laws and yearly program plans. Members began studying history, current events, travel and parliamentary law. Eventually, outside speakers were invited from Chicago and local colleges. Members participated in political life and were expected to come to meetings prepared to participate in meeting discussions and to exchange ideas.

From the beginning, the club established a keen interest in the community. After failing to convince the men of Lake Bluff to start a local paper, the Lake Bluff Women’s Club took matters into hand when its members founded the first local newspaper called “The Lake Bluff Chat.” At a time when women were denied the vote, “The — 92 —

Chat’s” female staff was reporting, copy writing, editing, selling advertising and printing the local paper. Articles included personal updates, club news, temperance articles, political news, helpful hints, and according to “The History of Lake Bluff Women’s Club” member, Harriet Link, a lot of “this and that.” There was also a section of society notes that kept track of wealthy Chicagoans summering in Lake Bluff, spending time in their summer homes and renting cottages. There were many parties, and a steady trail of horses and buggies traveling east on North Avenue to the lake. “The Lake Bluff Chat” chronicled the comings and goings of the elite, with long lists of party-attendees and cottage-renters. But, by the early 1920’s, Lake Bluff was changing from a glamorous summer resort to more of a suburban village.

Lake Bluff, and the nation, were also moving closer to war. Meetings continued with music and children’s parties, and special guest lecturers, but the club fine-tuned its focus. Meeting topics shifted to more patriotic topics, including “Bills Sponsored

by Women,” “Citizen Responsibility,” and “Training for Democracy.” The club ladies dedicated many of their efforts to aiding the Red Cross and Navy League. They knitted scarves and socks, and made comfort quilts and clothes for refugees of the war. A Fort Sheridan Committee was formed to lend aid wherever possible. The club held fundraising luncheons and tours at the Art Institute and the Field Museum; and

funds/aid went to the Great Lakes Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. Current Club historian and 19-year member, Margaret Abel, says the club’s philanthropic attention to our local veterans at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is the most meaningful work to her. “The club has reminded me of the sacrifices made so we can have all the freedoms we have today.”

Accordingly, the club established Lake Bluff’s first library in 1919, in honor of the World War I veterans in our community. Originally housed in a donated space in Village Hall, it was home to 500 volumes on assorted topics donated by the poet W.N. Roundy. The library was open two afternoons and evenings a week with members of the club serving as librarians.

In 1923, the club began distributing “Christmas boxes” for veterans; an effort that continues to this day, and one that gives the club particular purpose. Today, the club raises money for veterans by holding an annual picnic, and providing entertainment and support throughout the year. The club also offers two annual art and music scholarships for Lake Forest High School students, and continues to support the library, Lake Bluff schools, and almost 50 additional local and national charities.

Throughout the decades, the club has enlarged its activities and outreach, keeping its focus on civic outreach.

Membership swelled to 250 members in the 1970’s, and the women of Lake Bluff gathered for the club’s expanded programming: bridge, book reviews, golf, a bowling league and crafts, as well as participating in the talented in-house chorus that regaled Lake Bluff with their “Follies” production.

Although, the meetings are held less frequently—the second Tuesday of each month—the Lake Bluff Women’s Club maintains its purpose while improving its scope. And the objective remains the same: to foster civic involvement, to enhance quality of life and to strengthen our communities with people at the heart of its philanthropic endeavors.

And for Margaret Abel, this dedication to service and education is essential. “We have the same principals as first established in 1904. I’ve made new friends and looked at many topics in a new way, but we have never wavered or faltered from our mission.” ê MW

Banana Bread This was a regular holiday treat made by the Lake Bluff Women’s Club for the patients at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago. Even though this recipe makes very large loaves, they never lasted long.

Ingredients: 1 ¼ cup sugar ½ cup butter, or stick of margarine, softened

Instructions: 1. Move oven rack to low position so that the tops of pans will be in the center of oven.

2. Grease bottoms only of pans, two 8 ½ x 4 ½ x 2 ½ or one 9 x 5 x 3 loaf pan, with shortening.

2 large eggs

3. Mix sugar and butter in large bowl.

1 ½ cup mashed, very ripe bananas (3 medium)

4. Stir in eggs until well blended.

½ buttermilk

5. Stir banana, buttermilk and vanilla; beat until smooth. If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 1 tbsp lemon juice in ½ cup milk to substitute.

1 tsp vanilla

6. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt until just moistened.

2 ½ cup all-purpose flour

7. Stir in nuts.

1 tsp baking soda

8. Divide batter evenly between pans.

1 tsp salt 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

9. Bake 8 inch loaves, about 1 hour; 9 inch loaves, about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until toothpick in center comes out clean.

10. Cool 10 minutes in pan on wire rack. Cool completely, about 2 hours, before slicing. Wrap tightly and store at room temperature up to 4 days or refrigerated up to 10 days.

Lake Forest and Lake Bluff are home to two non-profit organizations that both recognize how critical reading is to a child’s educational growth and how learning to read provides a foundation for success in life. We’re taking a closer look at Reading Power and Bernie’s Book Bank in this edition of By the Numbers because they put “FREADOM on PARADE” each and every day.

READING POWER (readingpowerinc.org) provides one-to-one literacy tutoring during the school day for students in underserved areas of North Chicago and Zion. Its individualized reading program advances learning and helps develop a love of reading and writing in young children. The Lake Forest-based non-profit organization currently provides tutoring for prekindergarten through second grade students because early intervention helps to prepare students for future academic success. “Reading is power.”

BERNIE’S BOOK BANK (berniesbookbank.org) sources, processes and distributes quality children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout the Chicagoland area. Bernie’s Book Bank is committed to providing these children 12 books each year from birth through 6th grade because access to books promotes literacy and helps kids “read their way to a better life.”

Reading Power has been serving the North Chicago and Zion communities for 16 years.

Since 2003, more than 3,000 young children have been tutored

by Reading Power volunteers.

More than 230 Reading Power volunteers, many from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, establish a consistent relationship with and tutor the same children every week throughout the school year.

During the 2017-2018 school year, Reading Power tutored 468 students in 15,000 one-to-one tutoring sessions.

Reading Power students have read more than 115,000 books since 2015.

Reading Power’s cost to provide one-to-one literacy instruction is $2,000 per student per year, which is funded entirely through private donations.

Reading Power currently serves students in six North Chicago and Zion schools, and plans to expand into more schools to meet the substantial needs in Northeast Lake County.

Bernie’s Book Bank has distributed more than 15 million quality books since 2009.

More than 360,000 Chicagoland students receive books from Bernie’s Book Bank each year.

45,000 volunteers help Bernie’s Book Bank fulfill its mission.

More than 400 volunteers belong to the Bernie’s Book Bank 50 Hours Club, with each member pledging to volunteer 50 or more hours each year.

An $8 donation helps Bernie’s Book Bank provide 12 books to one child.

Each book is sourced, processed and distributed for $0.67.

More than 50 publishers, distributors and resellers donate new books to Bernie’s Book Bank.

In 2018, 400+ book drives were held by individuals, schools, civic and religious groups, sports teams and corporations to collect new and gently used books for Bernie’s Book Bank.

While Bernie’s Book Bank operates out of a 35,000 square-foot

facility in Lake Bluff, it plans to establish Bernie’s Book Bank locations in every major metropolitan area in America.

September 14, 1943 – September 26, 2018

Bill’s life was full of accomplishments. Most notable, he was the devoted father and grandfather to five children, two daughter-inlaws and two grandchildren of whom he was most proud. Other accomplishments include winning the 1992 1st place float award at the annual Lake Bluff 4th of July Parade, captaining ship voyages to the North Channel in Canada and the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico, and loyally and faithfully serving the Village of Lake Bluff and the Lake Bluff Fire Department for 30 years. Bill joined the fire department in 1989 and earned the title of Captain in 2006. He was also a member of the Lake Bluff Zoning Board, Chairman on the Zoning Board and a Village Trustee.

His children and grandchildren will most miss his amusement at his own bad jokes, his mischievous pranks, his faithful rendition of “Happy Birthday” on the harmonica and rides in his 1947 fire truck, which he parked in the driveway in front of his home on Prospect Avenue. He was a lover of the sea, boats, old cars, bad jokes, happy hour and talking to anyone who would listen. He was the master of the gee-haw whimmy-diddle, harpooner extraordinaire and a mighty fine storyteller. He loved listening to music in the dark—watching the skies and the stars—and standing under the eaves of the house watching when it rained. He was notoriously the last to leave a party, the first to offer a lending hand and he never failed to wave at a passerby.

You will be missed, Bill!
