Lack of talent could take outsourcing away from India

B

angalore: Despite s l o w d o w n , I n d i a ’s Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 30% annually and may touch $30 billion by 2015, from the current level of $20 billion, according to a study be ASSOCHAM.The rising demand for profession-based services is expected to drive the growth in the industry in areas of research for capital and financial markets, legal works, editing jobs for international publishing houses among many others, reveals the study on “Current scenario of Indian KPO Industry”. The study also says presently, domestic KPO industry is facing stiff competition from countries like Philippines, Russia, China, Poland and Hungary as these are emerging strong contenders for KPO business in view of

qualified KPO professionals, low-cost advantages, domain expertise, location advantage, sales and marketing capabilities and data compliance. A vast pool of highly educated professionals in engineering, medicines, management and professionals in the field of a c c o u n t a n c y, c o m p a n y secretary and legal fraternity would be required to serve the industry. Number as per rough estimates should be well within the range of over 6-8 lakh against the current numbers of 3.5 Lakh.It is difficult for KPO companies to always find a qualified, experienced and talented workforce in India. Considering the situation that there is no dearth of engineers, doctors, MBAs, lawyers etc. in India, the KPO industry is banking on availability of this talented pool to fill up its seats, but now they are facing the supply crunch.

Land grabbers don't spare even graveyards

B

angalore: More than six years after a legislators' panel exposed massive encroachment of public land in Bangalore, the Karnataka government is only taking little steps to reclaim its property. If the government is determined to reclaim the land its move might antagonize several influential people. It had been estimated that around 40,000 acres of land worth over Rs.40,000 crore had been encroached upon in Bangalore. There was no action on the panel's report submitted in 2007 as the coalition collapsed and the subsequent BJP government set up a committee headed by retired state additional chief secretary V. Balasubramanian in 2009 to study the issue afresh. The land taken over by the grabbers belongs to the revenue, forests, minor irrigation, health, animal husbandry and transport departments, as also the Bangalore Development Authority, the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board, the Bangalore City Corporation, the Karnataka Housing Board, the Wakf Board, the Bangalore University and the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board. The panel found that the grabbers had not even spared graveyards, dry lakes and tank beds.

A BIO-SCIENTIST PAR EXCELLENCE PASSES AWAY

B

angalore: Obaid Siddiqi, who passed away here late Friday was a leading research scientist and founding director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) a t t h e Ta t a I n s t i t u t e o f Fundamental Research (TIFR) here. "Siddiqi was one of India's finest biologists whose contribution to the growth of molecular biology was profound. Demonstrating that scientific research was creative, he pioneered behaviourial genetics by conducting research on the genetics of olfactory sensation in drosophila (fruit fly)," NCBS director Satyaji Mayor said. Born in 1932 in Uttar Pradesh, the young Siddiqi graduated from Aligarh Muslim University, and did his doctorate (PhD) on microbial genetics from University of Glasgow in Britain. "Siddiqi was instrumental in setting up the NCBS here over two decades ago (1992) to explore new frontiers in biological research and motivate a generation of fellow bioscientists to excel in the fascinating field," Mayor recalled. Siddiqi, 80, leaves behind wife Asiya, two sons Imran and Kalim and two daughters Yumna and Diba. "Siddiqi was among a daring few who defined a new intellectual quest and whose leadership created a culture of research. His foresight, determination and courage have transformed research in molecular biology in the country," said Biotechnology department secretary and former NCBS director K . Vi j a y R a g h a v a n . At the invitation of India's

famous nuclear physicist Homi Bhabha in 1962, Siddiqi had set up the molecular biology unit at the TIFR in Mumbai, where foundation for modern biology research in the country was laid. Working with Seymour Benzer at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) in the US in the early seventies (1970s), he discovered a set of temperature sensitive paralytic mutants that exhibited defects in the electrical activity of nerves and muscles. “The discovery led to an understanding of the mechanistic basis of neuronal function and heralded the dawn of the field of Behavioral Genetics," Mayor pointed out. The Indian government honoured Siddiqi with several awards and medals, including the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Bhatnagar Prize, Aryabhatta Medal by INSA (Indian National Science Academy) and BC Roy award for biomedical research. During his six-decade long illustrious academic career, Siddiqi's contributions were widely recognised national and internationally.

Ramjee to explode in Close Encounter

W

hitefield: Ramjee Chandran is the MD and Editor-in-Chief of Explocity Pvt Ltd. His life in the publishing area began in 1989, with a magazine called Bangalore This Fortnight (BTF). BTF metamorphosed into what we know today as Explocity Guide (formerly known as Cityinfo magazine). He is the man who changed leisure and easy living mores in the city. Yet Ramjee retains a razor sharp, eagle eye on what is happening in Bangalore and explodes with a “lead” story, much to the consternation and chagrin of local politicians,

journalists and even editors of our daily newspapers. Jagriti has been enabling a Close Encounter every alternate Sunday at 11 to an attentive and inquisitive audience. This time it is going to be Ramjee Chandran. Chandran launched The Bangalore Monthly, which was a socio-civic magazine that dealt with investigative stories. Around the time when India was just waking up to the charms of the Internet, Chandran had already gone online with Bangaloremag.com - one of the first city-centric websites in the world. Around 2000, after a meeting

with well known media giant Rupert Murdoch, Chandran acquired funding from Murdoch's NewsCorp and created Explocity.com which

grew to be a range of city-centric websites catering to users based in India, New York and Dubai. Chandran continued his publication presence in both print and online media. In September 2012, Chandran was part of a panel that discussed the legitimacy of Karnataka Members of Parliament using Tax payers' money to go on a tour on the news channel Times Now. Be at Jagriti and witness Ramjee explode on Sunday, the 4 August at 11am in the auditorium. It is free and open to all.

Wanting more Mr. Cleans ahead of time

B

angalore: Can anyone be in politics and also remain clean? is a million dollar question. We hardly find both words ‘politics’ and ‘clean’ go together hand in hand. If the answer for the above question is ‘no’, our hopes of restoring India from the clutches of corruption is completely shattered. However, we have a ray of hope gleaming in the form of Manik Sarkar, the Chief Minister of Tripura. He is the

poorest but also the purest Chief Minister in India. He is undoubtedly the poorest chief minister in India. According to the documents filed with the Election Commission, he had Rs.10,800 in cash. And that is true. He is probably India's only chief minister who does not own a home, car or bank balance worth mentioning. He does not even have a mobile phone and has never used the red beacon on his

official car. Sarkar's wife Panchali Bhattacharjee, 62, who retired as a government employee in 2010, has Rs.22,015 in cash and Rs.24,52,395 as savings. The couple has no children. She said her husband still washed his clothes every morning. Many political parties have already started preparing for the general elections, which are scheduled to be held in May 2014, and politicians are already beginning to focus as much on politicking as on policy making. In Indian politics the more things change the more they remain the same. For example when Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar denied tickets t o candid a t e s w i t h

The fine orator to fancy his chances as MLC

B

angalore: If we think of a fine orator in Kannada, what flashes in our mind is the name Vatal Nagaraj, the president of Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha. It is known that actor Rajinikanth listed Mr. Vatal Nagaraj as his favorite speaker. Mr. Nagarj is an ex MLA of Chamarajnagar and is now getting ready to field his candidate for the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) election to be held in the coming months. There are conjectures among political pundits that he himself might be the prominent candidate representing his party. The final nomination will be known by this week end. While addressing a gathering at Woodlands hotel on 2 August, he said, “I supported many parties to win elections and so I believe other parties will give me an opportunity to get elected unopposed when I contest the election this time.” There were occasions in the past Vatal Nagaraj supported ex chief minister Deva Gowda and other

regional parties. He would be a disappointed man if those parties field a candidate against him in the MLC election. The Kannada protagonist Vatal Nagaraj was in news a fortnight ago for leading a crusade against the poor allocation towards public toilets. He sent out a loud message to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that he was disappointed over the budget for construction of individual, community and public toilets. “We can eat rice at Re 1, but where will we relieve ourselves?” he asked in a high-pitched voice.

criminal antecedents, their better halves became lawmakers. So, the tainted leaders still call the shots in the House. RJD chief Lalu Prasad, stood down as Bihar's Chief Minister in 1997, when he was arrested on corruption charges, but installed his wife Rabri Devi as his proxy. He still faces charges in the Rs 900 crore fodder scam case. However, the SC giving a voice to a sentiment shared by millions, the

judgment is bound to affect electoral politics. Don’t you think we need more candidates like Manik Sarkar before the 2014 election?

C

hitradurga: Samajwadi Party (SP) suhead Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday indicated his prime ministerial ambitions when he said that a Third Front will emerge victorious in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Noting that party’s expansion is the need of the hour to “grasp power at Centre”, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday said in coming Lok Sabha polls, SP will field candidates in other states besides Uttar Pradesh.Yadav also used the occasion to laud the achievements of the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party Government in Uttar Pradesh. Asserting that Karnataka holds an importance place in his heart, Yadav further said that it was he who proposed H.D. Deve Gowda's name for the Prime Minister's post.

TIIFF to showcase creativity

B

angalore: Films made by young and talented film makers from across the world will be exhibited during the first Pan-India film festival -The Indian Independent Film Festival (TIIFF) focusing on independent film makers beginning on August 15.

“I put forward Deve Gowda's name for the Prime Minister's post. I put forward his name in Delhi, supported and helped him. So, Karnataka holds an important place in my heart," Yadav said, while addressing a gathering of Samajwadi Party (SP) supporters here. Recalling his party's long associations with Karnataka, Yadav urged the people of the state to strengthen the Samajwadi Party (SP) in national interest so that it plays an important role in Delhi.

The three day festival would showcase the works of young and talented film makers across the world including full-lenth feature films, short films, documentaries and award winning feature films 'Red Carpet. "No party will be able to get majority in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Neither the Congress nor the BJP will be able to get majority. The Third Front will emerge victorious," he said. Yadav had earlier on Sunday said his party would not have pre-poll alliance with any political party either at the national or at the Karnataka-level. Continued to Page to 6

In all 50 films from India, Pakistan, UK, Australia, Greece, Brazil, Tr i n i d a d a n d Tabago will be showcased.

SMALL TURNS BIG AS PANDORA'S BOX OPEN For more than six decades Indian states has been bifurcated time and again in an arbitrary manner because of political pressure from groups that are difficult to handle. In 2001, the states of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were made out of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Now by conceding the demand of Telangana, the government has opened the Pandora's Box for many more states for which agitations have been going on for several years. The anti-colonial movement led by the Congress party accepted the idea of provinces formed on a linguistic basis. But by the time India became independent its leaders also became aware of the divisive nature of linguistic identities. In 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru conceded the linguistic principle, but said security and stability of India was important and could not be compromised by diving the

country on linguistic lines. Various committees and commission were set up by Nehru's government but before the first organised bid at redrawing internal maps was made in 1956, Andhra Pradesh was formed on a linguistic basis after an agitation turned violent. Now what made the government to divide Andhra Pradesh? When the Telagana agitation was heading for the political q u a g m i re , i t h a d b e e n suggested that the States Reorganisation Commission could be formed. But by not doing so and instead dividing Andhra Pradesh as a single case, the Congress party has lost a chance to take a long term view. The decision shows that the ruling coalition is not looking at anything beyond its present tenure. With the current Telangana and Ghorkaland issues propping up, there are lot more places wanting to have their own space to learn, earn

and eat. Gross difference in develo pment of the regions and utter neglect leads to frustration and hence these claims. Smaller states help in better governance and better utilisation of resources at hand. This also brings the problem of "too many nano states" likened by s o m e a s "Balkanisati on" with e a c h being ruled by a gov ern

hence a good playground for mischief makers. All said and done, worthy politicians only can make things work for smaller states. Else small states will become a big problem for the country.

Adventures in Zambezia Kai is a bored and lonely falcon living with his father, Tendai in a remote outpost. In defiance of his father, he ventures to the bird city of Zambezia where he meets the feisty blackshouldered Kite, Zoe, adopted daughter of the city's founder Sekhuru. Kai learns the truth of his origins and how to be part of a community as he helps defend Zambezia from the take-over plot of the scavenging Marabous. The hairdressing salon in the bird city of Zambezia is one of the fun elements in this South African animation, in which the feathery plumes of a longlashed bird, get a colour makeover in a powder shower puff. Visually, there are numerous highlights, like the grandeur of the majestic Victoria Falls, the spectacular red sunsets and a diverse mix of birds, whose colours and natures meld together like an artist's unruly palette. The film itself is a bit of a hybrid, trying too hard to be all things, although its heart is in the right place as it tells the story of a free-spirited falcon eager to spread his wings and find his place in the world. The basic plot tells of the young falcon's adventures as he joins

the top-gun of birds, the elite Hurricanes, in a bid to defend Zambezia against the giant lizards and foraging Marabous. Samuel L. Jackson and Leonard Nimoy head the voice cast while Jeremy Suarez and Abigain Breslin are fine as the young

falcon and the feisty kite, drawn to each other during the adventure. Like the storytelling from first time director Wayne Thornley, Bruce Retief's music score is all over the place, combining the expected African rhythms with music that sits at odds. The inclusion of part of the traditional Irish tune Danny Boy is baffling.

Mulayam's son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and three lawmakers from the northern state also participated in the evening prayers (Namaz-eMughrib) and joined the Iftar dinner at a star hotel. Mulayam Singh and his son are on a twoday visit to Karnataka at the invitation of his party's only lawmaker C.P. Yogeeshwara, who got elected to the state legislative assembly from his home constituency Chennapatna, about 50 km from Bangalore. Among the state leaders present along with 200 other guests were former Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, former Congress central minister Jaffer Sharief, former Congress state minister

Roshan Baig, Congress lawmaker Ajay Singh, son of former state chief minister N. Dharam Singh and the state unit's Youth Congress president Rizwan Arshad. At a brief interaction with media after the namaz, Mulayam Singh claimed without the support of his party, no government could be formed at the centre after the next parliamentary elections. "We are working hard to get as many Lok Sabha seats as possible, as no government can be formed without our party's support at the centre," Mulayam Singh said responding to BJP leader L.K. angalore: The Karnataka Government w a r n e d t h e managements of private professional colleges in the state against charging more than the fee fixed while admitting merit students under the CET stream. There had been a number of complaints from students and parents that private engineering colleges were charging excess fee for undergraduate courses ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 over and above Rs 34,000 per annum fixed by the

government for CET students. However, the Consortium of Medical Engineering and Dental colleges-Karnataka (COMEDK) claimed that the fee 'negotiations' with the state government was still pending and the extra fees were only for the extra services provided to students other than the tuition fees. Speaking to reporters, Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande said the colleges are not authorised to collect anything more than the government fixed fee.

Dell deploys solar and reduces its carbon footprint

W

h i t e f i e l d : Reinforcing its commitment to the environment, Dell India

announced the installation of a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Grid Connected System at its premises in Whitefield. With a capacity of 42.78 kilowatt peak, the grid system will help Dell reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 54.9 tons of CO2equivalent per year. With this installation, Dell’s Whitefield campus becomes the second Dell site globally and the first in the APJ region to deploy a solar PV system. A highlight of this project is that Dell’s installation of 186 solar panels across 3340 square feet will avoid the use of batteries.

Batteries require energy for cooling, frequent maintenance and have a limited life span, all of which can have environmental costs. This new PV system will replace a portion of the grid power provided by the Electricity Board and the facility’s electrical generators with clean energy from the sun. Approximately 22.6% of Dell’s global electricity consumption came from renewable sources in Fy13. Commenting on the installation, Deepak Ohlyan, Executive Director of Facilities, Dell India said, “Dell supports various environment friendly efforts – from ways to reduce global emissions to incorporating power-efficiencies and employing sustainability practices. This Solar PV Grid Connected System installation strengthens Dell’s commitment to operate our facilities in a responsible manner.”

Loss of 65-70 trillion dollars?

I

t has been studied that millions of tons of methane is getting leaked at a very fast pace due to global warming in the arctic areas. This in turn adds to the already increasing average temperature of earth due to other green house gases thus getting embroiled in a vicious circle. Methane is known to be 20 times more potent than Carbon dioxide in trapping solar radiations, though it disintegrates faster than carbon dioxide. Methane combines with Oxygen thus reducing the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere. Methane is released in polar regions due to the exposure of biomass locked in permafrost when it melts. Biomass degrades and causes release of methane. Methane is also released when subsea volcanoes explode. This is a natural phenomenon about which

nothing can be done. It is also found in the form of gas hydrates at 0-2

degree centigrade as solid crystals which can be tapped as good sources of energy. Ice on water makes ice melt faster causing water level in the sea to rise. The generation of methane is found to be increasing at a pace, faster than its removal, thus causing polar ice to melt. This causes drastic changes in climate which includes cloud bursts. Cloud bursts are defined as about 100 mm of rain in a very short period. These cause landslides. It also leads to jet streams which are narrow currents moving in the upper atmosphere. This causes weather changes, droughts and floods, heat stress, changes in crop patterns, temperature and extreme climatic conditions. It has been predicted that in 35-40 years there will be no ice in arctic region. Every year, the amount of ice melting would increase leading to ice free arctic the whole year in the future. The prediction of loss financially that would occur to the world is calculated to be about 65 to 70 trillion dollars which is about the size of the world’s economy. Studies show that it would affect the tropical and subtropical regions most and the world’s poorest & populated

Mike Elms CEO and founder of Hotcourses made his mark at the conference with a presentation on 'online search trends based on student interactivity'.Some highlights from the presentation and the results of a survey conducted on more than 600 students are given below. It all starts with a 'Search':Most students who land up on Uniguru for the first time search for information based on the following parameters: By program / course - 50.4% By location - 19.7% By the name of the i n s t i t u t i o n 29.9%Points to Ponder: 78.4 % students were sure about which country they wanted to study in and 53.9% students were sure of which city they wanted to study. 38% students felt that reading about institutions in their own language was important while 30% students did

not think that this was an important aspect and it did not impact their decision in choosing an institution. 50.6% students were willing to study in American universities who offered their courses to students at satellite campuses in other countries. Online degrees do not find much favour with

students and nearly 64% students feel that an online degree is inferior to regular campus-based full-time degree. Nearly 48% students opine that their parents and family members play a major role in influencing decisions on which college and course to choose. A major portion of the survey respondents 41% students said that they applied to one or two universities. 22% students applied to four institutions and 36% students applied to more than four institutions. Nearly 50% students began actual research on short-listing their institution just six months before their course start-date and about 15% students started their research work a full two years before their course startdate.
