Welcome to Paradise
n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that
attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette the rich, red terra cotta rooflines that surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles,
332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, awardwinning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. This is the home of five Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger
and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Fess Parker, Eva Marie Saint and Jonathan Winters; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; bestselling authors Jack Canfield, Barnaby Conrad and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Fred Couples, Tommy Curren and Andy Granatelli; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Harold Simmons, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 5

World C lass W hale Watching Santa Barbara Channel Named Best Whale Watching by Discovery Channel
ecently featured on Discovery Channel as the world’s best whale watching area, the Santa Barbara Channel abounds with migrating gray whales in the winter and early spring, and the giant blue and humpback whales in the summer months. The Santa Barbara Channel is recognized as one of the world’s prime areas for whale watching. The unique East-West configuration of the channel and the converging ocean currents in the area provide ideal conditions during the summer months for the blooming of large quantities of krill, the favored food for blue and humpback whales...and Santa Barbara lies right on the path of the migrating California gray whales, making Santa Barbara one of the favored viewing spots on the West Coast. The charter boat CONDOR Express, in conjunction with museums around the world, offers whale watching trips throughout the various whale seasons to carry whale watchers, researchers and TV and film crews into the channel to experience these remarkable animals. The California Gray whales, which now number over 25,000 animals (they are now back to their pre-whaling population), migrate past the channel islands in December, January and February as they move southward toward their calving and mating grounds in Baja. From mid February through the end of April, the herd travels with the newborn calves close by Santa Barbara as they return to their feeding grounds in Alaska...completing a phenomenal 12,000 mile migration. Blue and humpback whales are regular visitors to channel waters, with pods of animals
being sighted during summer and fall months. From May through October, blues and/or humpbacks are sighted in the waters surrounding Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands... and during the busiest times they are joined by fin and minke whales, so that it often is possible to see all four species of whales feeding in the same area at the same time. Such a biodiversity in regards the great whales is seldom seen outside of the nutrient rich waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The blue whale is the largest animal ever to be on the face of the earth. Measuring up to 100 feet in length and weighing 100 tons or more, blue whales are larger by far than the largest of the dinosaurs and immensely larger than anything on earth today. The largest land animal is the elephant, weighting about 6 tons. The tongue of the blue whale is larger than an elephant...in fact, a blue whale is about as massive as a whole herd of elephants. Trips to view the whales of Santa Barbara are run aboard the new CONDOR Express, one of the most comfortable charter boats in California. The Endless Summer bar-café
A Top-Ten Seafood Spot By The Sea
ecently honored as one of the “Top 10 best spots around the West to enjoy seafood along with a seaside view”, in the June, 2007 issue of Sunset Magazine, The Endless Summer bar-café is named for the world-famous surfing film made in the early sixties that helped define the genre; and mirrored the surf culture which has become such a part of the California lifestyle. In the late 90’s, local restaurateurs Steve Hyslop and Larry Stone were introduced to the filmmaker, Bruce Brown, who gave them his blessing to open a restaurant and donated much of the memorabilia that is on display along with more contemporary boards, graciously donated by the shapers who made them, and, décor celebrating the current surfing scene. The large bar at the center of the restaurant features a million dollar view overlooking boats at the harbor, the city, and the Santa Barbara Riviera. Many of the Surf videos that scroll on the TV’s feature local breaks and surfers, and, of course The Endless Summer plays along with other sporting events. The restaurant is framed on either side by two covered yet open air patios, called “Lanais”, which makes outdoor dining a year round option. The South Lanai features two outdoor “Pool Tables with a View” which are a draw for families who are looking for something for their kids to do, while mom and dad can put their feet up and sip a cold one. Both Lanais are available for private parties. The food and drink are designed with the lifestyle in mind also; The Endless Summer bar-café is the kind of place one might drop in to share Mai-Tais and Popcorn Shrimp before or after heading out to the surf or to savor the sesame-crusted ahi on a warm spinach salad before a leisurely stroll along the breakwater. Many of the local fisherman finish their day here; most are happy to share their stories, and you’ll have a great story to share after dining at this surfing-inspired gem atop Chuck’s Waterfront Grill by the boats at 113 Harbor Way; (805) 564-4666. 336 4

A Seafood Joint
Arch Rock Fish
A New Locals Favorite
he Arch Rock Fish commitment to providing the best dining experience has produced impressive results for Santa Barbara’s newest restaurant, including nominations for “Best New Restaurant”, “Best Seafood Restaurant” and “Best Happy Hour” in a popular local readers poll. Centrally located at 608 Anacapa Street in downtown Santa Barbara, the flagship neighborhood joint venture created by HJL Restaurant Advisors Group principals Jeremiah Higgins, chef personality Scott Leibfried, former-Galaxy player-turned-coach Cobi Jones and beverage director Mike Anderson, is a unique dining experience underpinned by fresh, high-quality and flavorful seafood served in a fun and approachable atmosphere. HJL Restaurant Advisors Group assists in creating successful restaurant businesses through concept development, business planning, brand development, team leadership, team building and more. Named after the Arch Rock at Anacapa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara, the 156-seat neighborhood joint’s menu features full-flavored dishes including: baked Kusshi oysters with creamed spinach, bacon and tomato hollandaise; ale steamed mussels with garlic, shallots, grain mustard creme fraiche and croutons; grilled salmon burger topped with mustard aioli, arugula and pickled onions; and grilled wild bass with salsa fresco, green olives and cilantro. Arch Rock Executive Chef and HJL Partner Scott Leibfried, who oversees menu creation, ingredient procurement and the restaurant kitchen operations, has made a conscious effort to source fresh and locally produced ingredients. According to Leibfried, who is also known as the sous chef to Gordon Ramsay on the Fox Network television series “Hell’s Kitchen” , “the Arch Rock Fish menu takes the best of regional and international seafood dishes and gives them a local beach vibe to make them all new and original.” In addition to his mostly West Coast style seafood dishes, Leibfried has created an East Coast style lobster roll along with other specialties that include mussels in beef cioppino, chilled ice shellfish, ahi tuna salad and grilled yellowtail. Other unique offerings designed to appeal to locals and visitors include all day happy hour and family-style dinner, both on Sundays, the popular all day clam bake on Mondays and Tuesdays, take-out and curbside pick-up. Arch Rock Fish also features a private dining room, making it a great spot for large groups, meetings, cocktail receptions, rehearsal dinners or special occasion and holiday parties.
