FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us tonight. I am grateful to each of you for coming together to celebrate the power of service and for supporting our work at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the SF Bay Area (LCCRSF).

When we gathered at last year’s MLK dinner, we could not imagine what would come in the weeks and year ahead. We are collectively experiencing the deep grief of losing so many people we love and cherish in our lives; we have watched our nation be further torn apart by white supremacy; we have witnessed violent attacks from our police state on communities we serve and to which we belong. At times, it has felt like we have barely survived to make it to another morning.

And yet, in spite of it all, we are proving that in the face of repression and seemingly insurmountable hurdles, we only fight back stronger and more defiantly. This year, millions came together to protest police violence in the largest uprising in our country’s history. Now, more than ever, we are coming together to stand united, committed to the fight for justice and collective freedom.

While there will be some relief from our new president, we know that our vision for a just world will be realized by the community, for the community — by Black mothers demanding an end to police violence, by undocumented immigrants on hunger strikes fighting against detention, by ordinary people standing up to Wall Street, by creating public banks in cities across the country. We also know that we cannot do this on our own nor is it our burden to carry alone; it will take every single one of us working in our own capacities towards freedom so that we can all be free.

I am filled with hope when I imagine what we can do together. LCCRSF, our community partners, pro bono attorneys, and members already change the world in big and small ways every day. Over the past year, we have seen this more than ever. I cannot help but think about the abundance of possibilities we will have to transform the world this year.

The great poet Audre Lorde said, “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”

Her words ring ever true. We are freedom bound as long as we continue to fight for the freedom of one another. Join us on this journey of liberation.

VISIONARY AWARD IBRAM X. KENDI Professor, Antiracist Scholar & Award-Winning Author Ibram X. Kendi is one of America’s foremost historians and leading antiracist scholars. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and the Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research. He is also the 2020–2021 Frances B. Cashin Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for the Advanced Study at Harvard University. In 2020, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world and The Root 100 listed him as the seventh most influential African American between the ages of 25 and 45 and the most influential college professor.

Kendi is also the author of three #1 New York Times bestsellers, HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST, an international bestseller that has been translated in several languages; STAMPED: RACISM, ANTIRACISM, AND YOU, co-authored with Jason Reynolds and a Kirkus Prize Finalist; and ANTIRACIST BABY, illustrated

by Ashley Lukashevsky. HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST also made several Best Books of 2019 lists and was described in the New York Times as “the most courageous book to date on the problem of race in the Western mind.”

Kendi’s earlier works garnered praise as well: The Black Campus Movement won the W.E.B. Du Bois Book Prize, and Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2016. At 34 years old, Kendi was the youngest ever winner of the NBA for Nonfiction. He grew up dreaming about playing in the NBA (National Basketball Association), and ironically he ended up joining the other NBA. Kendi’s newest books are Be Antiracist: A Guided Journal for Awareness, Reflection, and Action and Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619–2019, which was released this month.

Kendi was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2019. He has published 14 academic essays in books and leading academic journals, and he co-edits the Black Power Series at NYU Press with historian Ashley Farmer. He has published op-eds in numerous periodicals, given commentary in international, national, and local media outlets, and delivered thousands of addresses over the years at colleges and universities, bookstores, festivals, conferences, libraries, churches, and other institutions in the United States and around the world.

Kendi earned his PhD in African American Studies from Temple University in 2010 and has taught at SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Albany, the University of Florida, and American University, becoming a full professor at the age of 34. In 2020, Boston University awarded him the endowed Andrew W. Mellon Professorship, the highest of honors, which has been held by only one other person in the University’s history: Elie Wiesel, the late Holocaust survivor and 1986 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who fought for decades for human rights around the world.

Kendi strives to be a hardcore antiracist and softcore vegan. He enjoys joking it up with friends and family, partaking in African American culture, weight-lifting, reading provocative books, discussing the issues of the day with open-minded people, and hoping and pressing for the day the New York Knicks will win an NBA championship and for the day this nation and world will be ruled by the best of humanity. Kendi lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

PAM MOORE Anchor, KRON4 News Pam Moore anchors KRON4 evening newscasts and also does special reports. She was nominated for an Emmy for the special “Selma to Ferguson” and has been inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle for her significant contribution to Northern California television.

She was also honored for her career achievements by the Society of Professional Journalism, NorCal. Moore’s work on KRON4’s five-part news series “About Race” garnered a number of awards, including a prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, the Pew Center Batten Prize for Civic Journalism, an In-Depth Reporting Award from the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, top honors from the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, and Best Documentary Award from the California Associated Press Television Radio Association.

Moore has earned numerous other honors, including the 2002 California Journalism Award from California State University, Sacramento, and a 2000 Northern California Emmy Award for “Who Owns Your Health.” Moore has also been honored for her community service, by the United Negro College Fund, Big Sisters Association, the Bay Area Black Media Coalition, YMCA of the East Bay, and the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation. She was the first recipient of the San Francisco NAACP Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Civil Rights Award. In 2001, Moore won the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Community Service Award, and in 2002 she received a supporter award from the East Oakland Youth Development Center, where she volunteers in the summer program each year and has a scholarship in her name. In 2012, she was honored by the League of Women Voters of San Francisco to be among the “Women Who Could Be President.”

Moore joined KRON4 in 1991 as an anchor and general assignment reporter after working at WBZ-TV in Boston, KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, WJLB Radio in Detroit, and news outlets in Louisville and Dallas. A native of Detroit, Moore graduated from the University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in radio/television and film.

GOAPELE Performer In one breath, Goapele is urging social change and boldly standing up for righteousness in the face of inequality. In another breath, she’s guiding her child with a sensitive understanding, hard-earned wisdom, and unconditional love. In between, she’s as soulful as ever. This delicate sonic shape-shifting is a technique she introduced on her now classic 2001 debut Closer, and has continued to evolve on the four albums that followed.

That diversity comes naturally to the South African, German-Jewish, Oakland-born singer/songwriter, producer, activist, actress and designer. Her unique influence can be found in moments throughout R&B. A film and television mainstay, some of her other notable contributions have been in Honey, Power, Black Lightning, 90210 and more. She joined the likes of Gabriel Union and Alfre Woodard in Ava DuVernay’s fashion short film for Miu Miu. Most recently she executive produced and starred in the art-noir, experimental short film #WhereIsBeauty.

Outside of music and entertainment, Goapele continues to build with communities and leaders to support the call for social justice. She has worked with multiple prison reform efforts including Common’s Imagine Justice Organization, Represent Justice, and A New Way of Life Foundation. An advocate for healthy living, she has been the face of several public health campaigns, from the California Tobacco Control Program to AIDS Health Care Foundation’s “Rise Above” campaign in the U.S. and South Africa. Her passion has led her to become involved in the Movement For Black Lives, The Agape Spiritual Center and more.

Most recently Goapele has focused on broadening her platform by hosting the “Closer Conversations” series on IG live, where she interviews her most inspirational friends in entertainment and activism, as they talk about passion, purpose and the journey in these uncertain times. Goapele is currently recording her sixth album, slated for release later this year.

LCCRSF recognizes Cooley LLP’s longstanding service, particularly its significant contributions as cocounsel in Zepeda Rivas v. Jennings, a class action lawsuit challenging the detention of immigrants at two California immigration detention centers where conditions are rife for the spread of COVID-19. Immigrant Justice

LCCRSF is committed to closing the racial wealth gap and empowering communities of color by increasing economic opportunities which will enable individuals to be in control of their livelihoods. We know that a strong economy fuels a community and, without it, the disparities that result can last for generations.

The rapidly increasing population of immigrants in the United States, and more specifically in the Bay Area, has been historically marginalized and continues to face various legal obstacles in an increasingly punitive immigration system. The Immigrant Justice Program aims to empower these immigrants who face significant barriers to fair treatment and civic engagement by challenging particularly unjust systemic processes and advocating directly for asylum seekers.

Our signature direct services program, Legal Services for Entrepreneurs (LSE), works with entrepreneurs who are starting or have an existing business. Through our network of pro bono attorneys, we provide a range of free legal services to small businesses and entrepreneurs in areas such as leasing, contracts, employment, bankruptcy and more. Pro bono attorneys can provide 1-hour limited scope consults, or full representation. All services are conducted remotely.

In light of COVID-19’s devastating impact on small businesses, the LSE program continues to provide remote workshops, clinics/consults, and attorney matching. We seek additional pro bono volunteers for a range of cases to help small businesses survive.

Our Asylum Program places asylum seekers with pro bono counsel to represent them in their affirmative asylum applications or in removal proceedings before the San Francisco Immigration Court. Asylum seekers are subject to rapidly changing laws and procedures that can affect their eligibility for relief. The program provides comprehensive trainings and resources, technical assistance, and robust mentorship for the duration of the placement so that attorneys are well equipped to handle the complexities of legal representation involved in these highly rewarding cases.

ABOUT LCCRSF Racial Justice

LAUNCHING IN 2021!

For the past 50-plus years, LCCRSF has fought to dismantle the many manifestations of institutionalized white supremacy and the oppression of Black communities and other people of color. Our mission is ever-urgent amid COVID-19 and the racist, brutal murders of George Floyd, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, and so many others. As part of our racial justice work, LCCRSF is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and its disproportionate harm to Black communities and other communities of color. We are providing critical direct legal services and advocating for a racial justice lens in COVID-related policies. For example, we recently released a report on racism in statewide infraction policing, including COVID and protest policing; are advocating for the end of police harassment and harm in communities of color; and with the current national reckoning in response to police brutality, we are rising to meet the demands of the moment.

Decriminalization of Poverty Clinic The first of its kind, this clinic will provide legal services for people fighting all kinds of unjust criminal and traffic debt, predatory bail contracts, vehicle tows related to unpaid debt or unnecessary arrests, and citations received or property taken because they are Black, brown, or low-income. Through this clinic and our partners, we will identify patterns of discriminatory policing and punishment throughout Northern California, and will litigate and help lead campaigns to end those practices.

Our Bail Clinic assists individuals and families with discharging bail debt from private bail companies.

Our clients at the Bail Clinic are low-income consumers who have been harmed by the predatory bail bonds industry. Volunteers conduct client intake interviews and provide limited-scope representation post-clinic.

We provide training, resources, and technical assistance.

This new clinic will seek recompense and collect first-person accounts and support for impact litigation and policy change. The clinic will particularly serve those who were harmed but are unable to qualify for a personal injury attorney—and advocate for change in police funding and practices alongside our clients and movement leaders. We will raise up the needs and claims of Black and Latinx people with disabilities, who are often targeted, disproportionately harmed, and ignored in policing reforms.

Our GLIDE Unconditional Legal Clinic provides free services and information for any type of legal question to clients in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, many of whom are unhoused. Pro bono attorneys with the GLIDE Clinic provide legal advice and limited help, as well as referrals to other legal centers and organizations for more specialized help. We also provide training and resources to attorneys participating in the Clinic. Representation is limited to the drop-in legal clinic and the entire GLIDE Clinic is now conducted remotely.

LCCRSF MEMBERS Our members are dedicated social justice advocates and allies committed to working together to further the civil rights movement here in the Bay Area, statewide, and beyond.

We aim for membership that is inclusive and representative of this diverse movement, and to provide meaningful engagement opportunities to foster connections among members and communities. Our members include, among others, pro bono volunteer attorneys, former clients, organizers, civil rights leaders and individuals committed to fighting racism and oppression, dismantling inequities and building a society that values every person equally.

Members are critical to achieving our mission. They help us raise LCCRSF’s profile in the community, contribute and mobilize resources, participate in our Racial, Economic, and/or Immigrant Justice programs by providing pro bono assistance to clinics and litigation, and encourage others to volunteer, support and get involved. Members gather each fall for an annual meeting to renew commitment and resolve to the movement for civil rights and social justice.
