A demanding but productive school year is drawing to a close. Before we put the final touches on the year, breathe a sigh of relief, and launch into summer break, let’s take a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished during the 20222023 school year and where we are heading.
As the school year began, we set our sights on improving our communication efforts and working on refocusing the District’s vision for the future. I am happy to report that we have delivered in both areas. In the fall of 2022, we introduced multiple updated lines of communication (i.e., Revised the Cardinal Connection, updated the district website, added a school mobile app, improved the text messaging system, and implemented student, staff, and community feedback surveys) and have received Lawson R-XIV Board of Education (BOE) approval for our updated District Communication Plan. We are excited to continue working to ensure that our lines of communication only improve as we move forward.
Education, Student Achievement, and Student Success, and are significant in preparing for a future of “Endless Possibilities.” Facilities Planning is focused on meeting the educational needs of current and future students. We are currently reviewing facilities comprehensively and determining what necessary maintenance and improvement projects must be completed to continue providing top-notch facilities for our students, staff, and community. This work will continue into the fall of 2023. We will be excited to share information surrounding the review and goals for improving our facilities.
MICHAEL STEPHENSON
Lawson R-XIV Superintendent
As for the work put into refocusing our District Vision, this was a collective effort completed by utilizing feedback from all stakeholders. As a result, our reimagined vision of “LawsonWhere Proud Traditions meet today’s challenges to provide Endless Possibilities” has become known as We Are Lawson! Our vision requires learning from our past while preparing for the future. We are accomplishing our vision by updating our Strategic Plan, which the BOE approved in January 2023, and includes four impactful goals. These four goals are connected to Facilities Planning, High-Quality Career
High-Quality Career Education was adopted as a goal to look for ways to expand course offerings for students in grades 7-12, allowing for greater career exploration and including steps for adopting agriculture education as a part of our future course offerings. Student Achievement is a continuous goal focused on improving our curricular resources and instructional practices to engage students and increase academic achievement. Student Success is intended to look for ways to expand opportunities to grow our early childhood offerings to include preschool learning opportunities for students ages three and four.
In closing, we have made great strides throughout the past school year but still have much to do. As we continue to press forward, my mission is to ensure that, as a school system, we focus on working together to provide the best we can for our students, staff members, and community. Thank you for the energy each of you brings to the Lawson community, and I am confident we will continue to positively impact the lives of those who call Lawson home.

AnnuAL eASter egg hunt
Several families attended to do crafts, play games, have a snack and, of course, hunt for those Easter eggs. So much fun and excitement at this age. We love our little Cardinals and we would love for your family to join us!
“It takes a village” is more than just a phrase to me. It is my goal to strengthen our Lawson Cardinal Village, by connecting families, providing resources and personalized visits. I provide screenings annually for those enrolled in PAT. The screening gives us the ability to track the amazing growth your child will have over the next year. I conduct an ASQ or DIAL-4 developmental screening (depending on age). I also screen your child’s vision and hearing.
Beyond screenings, I also provide personalized visits and group events for all families with children PRENATAL to kindergarten entry. This is a free service provided by the district to help assist families in all aspects of childrearing. I would love for your family to join our program and be part of our Lawson Cardinal Village!
Parents as Teachers is accepting new families into this FREE program. If you are interested in joining PAT, it is for children PRENATAL to kindergarten entry, that reside in the Lawson School District.
Please reach out for more information, or scan the QR code and fill out the enrollment form. Once it has been submitted, I will contact you to schedule a personal visit and get you started!
Sincerely,
Kristina Meyer Lawson R-XIV Parents as Teachers Meyerk@ lawsoncardinals.org

What Does That Mean?
The Lawson High School Robotics Team won the Heartland Regional Competition and has qualified to compete in the FRC Championship Competition. The team will be representing Lawson High School, the City of Lawson, and all the team’s sponsors at this event. The Lawson team was also a finalist in the play-offs at the Greater Kansas City Regional.
These were not only great accomplishments for the Lawson Robotics team, but for both alliances that the team had the pleasure of being a part of during both the Heartland Regional and the GKC Regional. The LHS team would like to thank and congratulate these teams for punching their tickets to the World Championship in Houston,Texas: Team 1987 Broncobots from Lee’s Summit North; Team 3184 Blaze Robotics from Burnsville, Minnesota; Team 5801 CTC Inspire from Independence, MO; and Team 1802 Team Stealth from Kansas City, Kansas. Without the opportunity to
compete alongside these amazing teams, none of this would have been possible. Because of our team’s hard work and the teamwork exhibited with other members of their alliances, the LHS Robotics Team can experience all that the FRC Championship Competition has to offer.
The 2023 FIRST® Championship presented by BAE Systems will be held in Houston, Texas, Apr. 19-22. Hosted by FIRST®, FIRST Championship is a culminating, international event for our youth robotics competition season and an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for our community as we prepare young people for the future. Qualification and advancement to participate in FIRST Championship varies by program. Our team will compete against over 400 teams from the U.S. and around the world. The competition starts with eight divisions with the winners of each division advancing to the Final Championship Tournament
play-off round. In addition to the competition itself, the opportunity to meet other top-performing students from around the world, talk to many colleges and universities who will be on-site for the event, as well as interacting with many of the companies who help sponsor FIRST Robotics will be an incredible learning experience for our students who earned this opportunity.
Thank you to all of the sponsors and community members who have assisted in raising money for entrance fees, travel, room and board, food, and the other various expenses associated with taking the team to Houston for a once in a lifetime experience competing in the FRC Worlds Championship.
If you would like to help support the Lawson Robotics Teams by donating, sponsoring, mentoring, or any other of the various options, please contact Robotics Coach Rodney Foster by email at fosterr@ lawsoncardinals.org.

LARGE ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL
Select Choir has had an outstanding year with district honors. Following a very successful fall with 18 students selected for the Northwest AllDistrict Choir, Select Choir participated in the annual MSHSAA State Large Ensemble Festival on March 9 at Staley High School. They performed two prepared pieces: Mozart’s “Dies Irae” arranged by Liebergen and “We Are Held” by Missouri composer Susan LaBarr. A panel of three judges scored them on musical and technical components. They received 2 Outstanding and 1 Exemplary rating from these judges. Following their performance on stage, they entered the Sight Reading room where they were given a total of four minutes to study a piece of music before performing it twice for a judge. During this preparation period, students were not allowed to sing a single note of the song. Once the time was up, they were given starting pitches and had to perform the entire piece of music for the judge. Select Choir received an Exemplary rating from the Sight Reading judge. The combined scores resulted in an overall Exemplary Gold rating, which is the highest possible rating an ensemble can receive. This is the third time Select Choir has received this high honor since Mrs.
Music
at Southwest Elementary
So many wonderful musical things have been happening at Southwest Elementary in the music room! The second grade students had a fantastic concert in March about the great outdoors! The first grade students also had a great production of “HATS - A Musical that Celebrates What’s Underneath!” The Kindergarten students’ concert was on Thursday, Apr. 13, “Gettin’ Down With Mama Goose!” So lots of productions have been going on and the students are doing great work! Southwest Singers will have a spring concert combined with Mrs. Covey’s 5th and 6th grade choir, the Cardinal Chorale, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 in the Sellers Performing Arts Center.
Third and fourth grade students have diligently worked on Recorder Karate! Each song they learn and play earns them a belt that’s tied onto the bell of their instrument.
Lastly, March is Music in Our Schools month. Each student participated in a “WHY MUSIC?” bulletin board outside the music classroom. Students wrote on a colored piece of paper, stating why they love music or why music is important to them. Their answers are wonderful! Here are some of things they wrote: “I love music because it pumps me up before a wrestling match,” “Music brings people together,” “We need music because it uses every subject!”
Covey began teaching in 2008. The previous top ratings were given in 2014 and 2017. Prior to those years, 2006 was the last time a choir from Lawson received top honors.
DISTRICT SOLO/SMALL ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL
A few weeks later, on Apr. 1, 11 vocal soloists performed in the MSHSAA District Solo/Small Ensemble Festival at Liberty High School. Each student prepared two contrasting solos to perform from memory in front of a judge. The judge rated the soloist on musical and technical components, similar to the large ensemble festival. For the first time since 2019, two vocalists qualified to advance to the MSHSAA State Solo/Small Ensemble Festival held on the Mizzou campus on Thursday, Apr. 27. Aleah Johnson (9) and Hunter Thompson (10) both received Exemplary Gold ratings and will be advancing to state. Ava Briegel (11), Jocelyn Hazlett (11), Haley Hollon (11), Haley Lewis (10), Joanna Mayne (9), Carsyn McPheeters (12), Cade Shafer (11), Cara Siebert (10), and Jacklyn Thompson (10) all received Outstanding Silver ratings on their solos. This is the largest number of soloists Mrs. Covey has had compete at the District Festival.
High school archery club meets on Wednesday mornings for grades 9th-12th in the middle school gym. The middle school archery club meets Thursday mornings for grades 5-8. Both clubs meet from 7-7:40 a.m. Students learn bow safety and the basics of archery. Students also have an opportunity to shoot bows in summer school during the Sports Unlimited class.

hIghLIghts Health Room
Spring is in the air and spring fever is sure to follow. While spring fever is not a reason to miss school, we still need to monitor for symptoms of illnesses that should exclude us from class. COVID-19, flu and the common cold are caused by viruses and can share some similarities like headache, cough, sore throat, muscle aches and runny or stuffy nose. Generally, fever is associated with COVID-19 and the flu and only sometimes with a cold. If you are experiencing a fever of 100 degrees or greater and/or have a cough that cannot be controlled with drinks of water or cough medicine, you should not come to school until cough is controlled with drinks/ medication and you are 24 hours fever-free without aid of medication.
ALLERGY SEASON
Springtime also brings allergy season which can make us feel yucky. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny or stuffy nose and sometimes a cough are often associated with seasonal allergies. Respiratory conditions such as asthma can be triggered by things like pollen that causes allergies. The best way to prevent seasonal allergies is to avoid your known triggers. If you’re allergic to pollen, stay inside with windows and doors closed as much as possible when there’s a lot of pollen in the air. Treatment of seasonal allergies may include non-prescription or prescription antihistamines, nasal steroid sprays and decongestants and avoidance of exposure to allergens where possible.
IMMUNIZATIONS
Now is a good time to check with your health care provider or local health department to ensure that your student has the required immunizations as well as the appropriate documentation of immunizations/exemptions in preparation for the upcoming year. The school must have documentation of required vaccinations on file before the first day of
school in August. Proof of immunization can be turned in to either school nurse office at any time.
Students Entering Kindergarten
• Must provide the school with documentation of up-to-date immunization status that includes the month, day and year of each required immunization before they can attend school.
• The most recent list of Missouri school immunization requirements has been included in the kindergarten enrollment packets.
• If your child has started a vaccine series but has not completed it prior to the start of school, he/she must have an Immunizaton-In-Progress form on file with the school, stating the appointment date when the next dose is to be given.
Students Entering 8th Grade
Required to receive one dose of the Tdap vaccine and one dose of the Meningococcal vaccine (MCV) prior to the first day of school.
Students Entering 12th Grade
Required to have two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine (MCV) prior to the first day of school unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age (Immunization-In-Progress cards won’t work for this immunization).
Immunization Tips
Parents with 7th grade and 11th grade students might want to go ahead and take their students to get these vaccines, because they can sometimes be difficult to get in the summer months when demand increases. The Ray County Health Department (RCHD) is a good resource for vaccines and vaccinerelated questions. The RCHD is located in Richmond and can be reached at 816-7765413.

The district recently finished updating its communications systems. This process included designing a new website, building a new app, and setting up a new text alert system.
“Our hope was to make it more user friendly and easier for our patrons, parents, students, and staff to find important information and stay connected to what’s happening in the district,”
Christina Cross, Public Relations Coordinator for the district, said.
The switchover began on Dec. 2. You can now download the district app that includes district events and athletic events calendars, links
to our staff, the dining menus, connections to the daily middle school and high school bulletins, and much more!
