The Texel Sheep Society provides data collection and performance reporting services to its membership. From 2024, the service and evaluation combines pedigree and genomic data to provide indexes that are simple to use and understand.

In simple terms: higher value = more profit per lamb

The texelplus economic indexes support the breed’s development with an increased focus on commercial traits and profitability. The TERMINAL and REPLACEMENT INDEXES reflect the breed’s influence on industry. Both are presented as the potential extra profit per lamb born in a commercial setting, compared to the population baseline.

The TERMINAL INDEX supports increased profitability through improving prime lambs and is weighted strongly for meat production. The REPLACEMENT INDEX includes additional maternal traits to optimise production of female replacements.

Commercial producers solely producing prime lambs should use the TERMINAL INDEX to inform their selection; however, those retaining female replacements should use the REPLACEMENT INDEX.

Sub -indexes underpin the indexes to provide more information on the relative values and ranking of animals for growth, fat and muscle weight, and reproduction.

An example

High ranking rams can deliver over £4.50 per lamb more than lower-ranking rams. Over a ram’s working lifetime, this is easily worth an extra £690 per ram; generated through shorter finish times and improved carcass quality.

59 Stock Rams

59.1 Vendor’s warranty - The vendor warrants that any ram sold as a stock ram for the amount in paragraph (j) of the Appendix or more is capable of and effective at natural service. This warranty is a 10 week warranty.

59.2 Purchaser’s rights - If the purchaser proves a breach of warranty then the purchaser may return the ram to the vendor who shall, at the purchaser’s option, either replace the ram with another ram of equal value which is capable of and effective at natural service, or refund the purchase price together with such costs and charges as the purchaser may be entitled to under these Conditions. Notice of a claim must be supported by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate confirming that: (a) the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness is not the result of injury, accident or illness happening after the time of the sale: and (b) the purchaser’s breeding stock are not responsible for the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness.

55 Female Sheep Proving Barren

55.1 Vendor’s warranty – The vendor warrants that any female sheep sold as being in lamb is in lamb at the time of sale. This warranty is a 21 day warranty

55.2 Purchaser’s rights - If the purchaser proves a breach of warranty he may exercise his rights under Condition 66. Notice of a claim must be supported by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate.

EXPORT NOTICE

As of 1st January 2021, Lawrie & Symington Limited are not able to offer direct export for sheep due to new exporting rules. If you are a buyer from Northern Ireland, Eire, or the European Union then sheep cannot be moved direct from a sale. It is the responsibility of of the Vendor and/or Purchaser to make the necessary arrangements. Please consult the vendor to check if they are willing to assist with this and what cost will be involved.

The Craighead flock of Texels was founded in 1978 with the purchase of a Ewe Lamb from the Prevost flock in France. Further gimmers have been purchased in over the years from Milnbank, Turin and Ettrick flocks.

We have enjoyed many successes in both the show and sale rings over the years with sheep regularly receiving prizes at the Royal Highland Show, being Reserve Champion twice. In the sale ring - Gimmers; Ram Lambs; and Ewe Lambs have been sold to top flocks at both National Sales and Club Sales. Ram Lambs have sold to 50,000gns for Craighead Hercules; 27,000gns for Craighead Yankee; 26,000gns for Craighead Dynamite; and 15,000gns for Craighead Crackerjack. Females have sold to a top of 13,000gns and 5,500gns four times at the Select Seven Sales. Notable sires used over the years include: Parkhouse Value; Ettrick Glenmorangie; Hartside All Star; Fordafourie Amalert; and Uskvale Crackerjack.

With the entire Adult Portion of the flock being sold last year, this is the final offering of Texels from the Craighead flock. Progeny from last year’s dispersal have sold to £35,000. All gimmers forward are sired by Sadlerhead Ferrari who is a full brother to Sadlerhead Fury who himself has bred lambs to 42,000gns and Shearlings to £35,000.
