La Habra Neighborhood Residents Activity Center

Responsible area: Site Survey /Digital Mapping/ Modeling / rendering

Cal Poly Pomona URP Fall-2018/Spring-2019

101 N Beach Blvd, La Habra, CA 90631

Instructors: Dina Abdul Karim / Nicole Lambrou Team Project

This project is the initial group study project of urban planning study. Location in La Habra. We envision our district to have a sense of place where the people have a desire to engage within their community. By making it a place where people want to go instead of needing to go, we hope to create vibrancy, character, and personality.

S Uses existing sidewalk infrastructure to meet the demands of a park and highlights age and ethnic diversity with activities for both children and adults.

W Provides a counterpoint to auto-oriented plazas. Subsequently improves lighting and pedestrian friendliness.

O Transforms underutilized lot into useable space. Bus riders will also be able to utilize the area as a safe waiting area.

T Increases pedestrian safety and pedestrian visibility by implementing signage.

After team research, we investigated the status quo and conditions of the community, and finally selected a plan to transform a large parking lot into an activity center that is beneficial to surrounding residents. On the basis of not destroying the original parking function, increase the service function of green public space and commercial area. Strong community outdoor communication can also create opportunities for commercial spaces.

The goal of our team in this project is to increase public space by using existing vacant sites and underutilized parking lots. Increasing transparency will increase community participation and give the region vitality and sense of place. Take advantage of this opportunity to showcase small businesses through plans to increase their visibility and achieve a win-win situation in space utilization and commerce.

Taking into account the deployment cycle and environmental protection, we considered recycling metal container boxes as the basic structure of the rooftop market store.

Rooftop market place

The core of the activity center is still a large-capacity public service parking lot. On the basis of the original functions, we have added a public space that serves the community. In addition to the market, the top floor of the building also has developed gardens and green spaces. These depend on the seasonal changes that the venue can adapt to and the content of the activities arranged.

The northern building complex on the campus side has the most important functions and facilities. The consultation center and waiting room of the station provide passengers with traffic information and consultation. A series of commercial areas such as shops, cultural exhibition rooms, agricultural supermarkets, coffee shops, etc. provide fast and convenient life for people passing by the station. The Hawk way that passes through the station is a mixed bicycle and sidewalk that links the station to the main campus.

The middle island area of the station is the waiting area for bus passengers. The huge dome can create shadows and provide the waiting area with the effect of blocking the strong sunlight during the day.

The various services of the station can not only provide life convenience for Cal Poly students, but also provide life convenience for people in the surrounding areas of the school, such as residential areas and offices.

Overview of North Longbeach Micro Home Village

1. Site location transit condition study

Design a sustainable micro-village that can be self-sufficient by creating a safe space. Through a series of programming and services, the village would provide opportunities for vulnerable groups to change their life trajectory.

We study the numbers of the current social structure, and from the data, the households headed by single-parent families show a gradual increase. Today this statistic is three times that of 1960. The graduation rate of women who are single mothers entering university is only 28%, that of married mothers is 40%, and that of non-parent female students is 57%. This makes us realize that the proportion of single mothers is increasing, and what is happening now shows that they need to help them more than ever.

2. Village axon

Located in the center of the community, the community education center has the largest construction area and multiple functions. The education center of the community is mainly to provide education and public life space for single mothers and their children in the community. There are multifunctional classrooms, study rooms and libraries in the center, which provide necessary equipment and places for learning.

Community education center and public open plaza

The buildings in the residential area half enclose the open public places in the community. The open area mixed with diversity gives community residents a variety of options for the land in the community. Seasonal plants and removable or movable rest seats, etc. The diversified combination of public areas creates different styles and functions.

The green planting area close to the education center can be used as a variety of crop planting areas. The residents of the community have the right to decide on these areas.

The building is mainly divided into two parts: community residents’ services and children’s services: community residents’ laundry room and large children’s indoor daily activity space on the first floor, children’s lounge and nursing room on the second floor, and childcare staff’s work rooms

Main educational resources: main library and two multifunctional classrooms on the first floor, additional classrooms or study rooms on the second floor, education staff office, outdoor balcony

Main service resources for community residents: community clinics with multiple functions, laundry rooms for community residents

2. Residential area court yard and Children’s playground

There are sporadic small garden planting areas in the yards of residential areas, where various varieties of plants can be planted. Residents can make matching and seasonal changes as needed. At the same time, the courtyard will have a lot of space used as a children’s playground. The public space design of the courtyard is for community residents to have more opportunities to contact the green natural environment and manage the living space.

LA Downtown Art museum

Case study analysis / Modeling / Rendering

The main composition of the clip art is a model of downtown Los Angeles folded in an equilateral triangle. The idea in the picture comes from the classic fragment of the mirror-folded Paris city in the movie “Inception”. The different colors in the painting represent different buildings, reflecting the high density of buildings in the city and the crowded streets. In the conception stage, we hope that the basic structure of the artwork can be reflected in the exterior of the project building.

Collagse Art work of Los Angeles Downtown district

We chose Toyo Ito's work as a study case. The luxury brand boutique Tod's Boutique is located in Tokyo, Japan. The most important feature is that the exterior surface of the building is both a graphic pattern and a structural system.

1. TOD’s Omotesando Building concept case study research

2. Conceptual Design of Building Support Frame

“How can we get rid of the traditional concept of wall structure?”

Toyo Ito & Associates

In the design process, we tried to combine the transparent glass in the exterior wall of the building with the exterior support structure. The glass area on the exterior of the building is based on works of art. Link the ends of the disconnected area as a support frame structure.

In the project, we also hope that the characteristic of the building is a distinct abstraction in appearance. As an art museum located in the downtown area, it can reflect the unique regional characteristics of downtown Los Angeles. The building has seven floors and is roughly divided into four main functions. The scope of services covers cultural relics exhibition/internal office/open restaurant/research library.

The art museum near the highway is surrounded by cultural-related buildings. The surrounding public open areas such as Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and Ahmanson Theatre all show their own independent cultural qualities. We hope that as a carrier of public culture, buildings can also reflect the unique characteristics of the region itself.

Transparent glass is the main way for the museum’s top and subtop exhibition rooms to obtain external light sources.

2. Museum main lobby

A staircase extending from the first floor to the top floor connects most of the rooms of the museum. In the museum lobby, which has abundant public service facilities, you can see the internal support of the staggered extension of the building.

The background of this design project is a comprehensive upgrade plan for a new generation of Toyota brand auto sales stores in China. Some details are replaced with the original room layout unchanged. Considering the cost of renovation, the transparency and lighting of the exhibition hall, I chose brighter colors for material matching. The overall style is extended horizontally based on the horizontal direction. The project is currently being used by Toyota China as a template for the nationwide store upgrade.
