Park, party and be patient. City officials are alerting fans who may come downtown to celebrate a Kansas University victory Saturday in the Final Four that downtown access will be different than it was following Sunday’s victory in the Elite Eight. Police Chief Tarik Khatib said plans are for Massachusetts Street to Khatib be shut down to traffic from Sixth to 13th streets following a KU victory. Most side streets that cross Massachusetts Street also won’t be open to traffic. Last weekend, Massachusetts Street wasn’t shut down to traffic, although travel was extremely difficult because of the large crowds. “Frankly, we just need the space the streets provide,” Khatib told city commissioners at a recent briefing. “There’s no way we can keep people on the sidewalks. “But all of this does mean that if you park your car down there, you are probably staying down there for the duration. We won’t be escorting anybody out.” Please see STREETS, page 2A

Actual buckeyes, like this one at left, are mildly toxic nuts that grow on buckeye trees, which are plentiful in the Ohio River Valley. The wood from these trees was once used to make artificial limbs.

How we stack up off the court By Chad Lawhorn clawhorn@ljworld.com

Perhaps some of you will be going to the Final Four in New Orleans this week, where surely you’ll run into an Ohio State Buckeye. If so, ask them this: Why are you such a worthless nut? No, we’re not trying to arrange for you to come back with a souvenir black eye. On the contrary, Ohio State boosters apparently take some pride in being worthless nuts. The Journal-World dug deep into its research budget this week to find out more about the Buckeyes — Kansas University’s opponent on Saturday night — and we decided to start with the actual Buckeye. As in, what the heck is it? Brutus Buckeye is Ohio State’s beloved mascot, which is why we were a bit surprised with how Ohio State’s

official website described an actual Buckeye.
