LETTER FROM INTERIM

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Lawrence Community,

How quickly time moves and situations change. It has been a quick 10 months since I began as Interim Executive Director of the Lawrence Arts Center. And for those who have been closely watching, you are aware that many things have come to pass during this transitional time.

The past year has demonstrated to us all that if you care about something, you can make a difference. We are grateful to YOU, our community. You have maintained your engagement. You have continued to take classes. You have helped set record breaking numbers in sell-out performances in our theater throughout the year. Thank you!

Many of you heard our call last November, and I am humbled to report that many long standing friends and individual donors doubled their generosity in a time of need. We have done our best to acknowledge and thank you all, but in this time of transition and change, we may have missed some of you. Please accept our apologies, and this note of recognition.

During this time of transition, we have seen countless people donate hours and hours of their time and skills to our endeavors. It truly has been a year of community support, a year of “rallying” around a common cause. It has been a privilege to see up close how important this organization is to Lawrence.

As I write this, we are conducting a promising search for my permanent replacement. Certainly, I will continue my personal connection and engagement. I will actively choose to grow my community and relationships through this community hub. Certainly, I need to express my gratitude for the patience that a very talented, caring, generous, and intelligent (cognitive and emotional) staff has extended me during what has been a steep learning curve. And certainly, I ask that you continue to support and be engaged in the many offerings you will find in this catalogue and each time you come through our doors. The transition and evolution continue, please come be a part of it.

Tom

She received her BFA in New Media and Design at UNC Greensboro and MFA in Printmaking from Arizona State University (2025). Her practice engages with the call-andresponse within the African diaspora through her own visual glossary functioning as pattern, design and language. She has been featured in Southwest Contemporary Magazine: Radical Futures (Volume 10) and AIGA Charlotte.

EXHIBITIONS

AUGUST 1 - SEPTEMBER 6 • Final Friday | August 29, 6-9 pm

NICK SCHMIEDELER | Leftover Lawrence

Nick Schmiedeler has been tinkering with found, salvaged, and natural objects for decades. Inspired by the rustic, craftsman-style, he has created folk art-inspired works that are comprised of bits and pieces of Lawrence. Fragments assembled from local yard sales, alleys, the Kaw, junkyards, and thrift stores tell a story of new life after being discarded.

JEFF WEINBERG | Retrospective

Over the last twenty years, Jeff Weinberg has maintained an art studio for his interdisciplinary work. Jeff considers both his paintings and his table pieces, which are composed of gold, marble paste, acrylic paint, and gemstones, to be experiential.

BEHIND THE STUDIO DOOR |

Curated by Louis Copt and Clive Fullagar

Portraiture is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of artistic expression. Its history dates back to ancient civilizations. The portraits in this exhibition are deeply personal, depicting either the artists themselves or those close to them and revealing as much about the artist’s personality, psyche, and experiences as about the person portrayed.

Participating Artists:

Doug Barrett, Dick Beeman, Anthony Chelz, Laura Cobb, Louis Copt, Geraldine “Gerry” Craig, Rachel Curtis, Patrick Duegaw, Clive Fullagar, Linda Ganstrom, Mary Gordon McFall, Lisa Grossman, Annie Helmericks-Louder, Philip Heying, Shreepad Joglekar, Melanie Johnson, Stephen Johnson, James Jones, Hannah Lindo, John Louder, Michael McCaffrey, Aaron Morgan Brown, Kristin Nowlin, Nora Othic, Larry Peters, Ann Piper, Jason Scuilla, Nelson Smith, Luke Townsend, Barbara Waterman-Peters, Kelly Yarbrough.

SEPTEMBER 12 - OCTOBER 25 • FINAL FRIDAY | September 26 and October 24, 6-9 pm

MATTHEW WILLIE GARCIA | Enter the Void

Enter the Void is a series of works that investigates the unknown, both in the cosmos and within the self. Garcia’s work will transform the gallery into a site of exploration and discovery, inviting viewers to reorient their sense of existence in relation to all of time, approximately 13.8 billion years.

INSIGHT ART TALK | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 7 PM

ERICKA WALKER | The Heritage Collection

The Heritage Collection is a series of large-scale relief prints, each of a man-made explosion since the War of The American Revolution. The national mythologies of both the United States and Canada bind Ericka and her children to all manner of violent birthright. In The Heritage Collection, these are translated in terms of bomb tests, artillery strikes, and chemical weapons deployments, sampled from the beginnings of nationhood to the present day.

OCTOBER 31 - DECEMBER 13

NIC DIKIN | Molten Lines

Drawing inspiration from the world around him, Nic Dikin creates colorful, intricate, and functional glass pieces. Specializing in roll-ups and caning, these delicate works bridge fine art with functionality.

SAMANTHA MENDOZA | All That’s Forgotten

Merging the sacred tradition of storytelling with the ritualistic process of printmaking, with a heavy emphasis on symbolism, these works weave the intimacy of self-inquiry with patterns of collective thought and experience. Narratives are constructed with references to hybridized time periods, mythologies, rituals, and environments, which place figures somewhere in the gap between the mundane and the mystical.

SUNYOUNG PARK | Simulated Bodies: NATURE AS FLESH, CLAY AS THOUGHT

SunYoung Park’s artwork explores the interplay of personal memory and collective longing through surrealist gestures and the depiction of liminal spaces. Employing a distinctive visual language, the exhibition features two-dimensional hanging sculptures that blend traditional Korean iconography with contemporary symbolism, seeking to evoke introspection and dialogue about how individual histories intertwine within broader cultural narratives.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

As a former educator I knew the Lawrence Arts Center Kindergarten was the place for us! The opportunity to ease into daily school, while only going for a half day, with the perfect class size was a huge drawing point for me. Knowing that the teachers would treat him with the utmost care, and that he would get a quality education within the world of play was exactly what we both needed! I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about the Lawrence Arts Center and how amazing it has been for my now six-year-old. The only thing I would change would be to have a way for him to keep attending!

Join our community, where curious minds and families forget lifelong friendships wile embarking on exciting journeys of discovery.
