Dear Friends,

As the Lawrence Arts Center enters its 41st year, I think about the ways our patrons, staff, students, artists, and supporters from all walks make at least three sometimes incompatible things happen at once. • Excellence. In our galleries, sometimes on the streets outside, in our studios, and theaters, we exhibit and perform some of the best work in the country. We look for excellence in technique, style, and ability to engage audiences.

• Experimentation. The Lawrence Arts Center should be a place to experiment with technique and concept. “Studio thinking” means children, teenagers, adults, artists and the rest of us, get to understand problems of design, choreography, technique, etc., and work collaboratively to solve them; and sometimes fail and start again.

• Access. We strive to keep access to studios, live music, art classes, and theater free or affordable. We also want artists at all stages of their careers to have space, time, and other resources to experiment, fail, and achieve excellence.

Your support means that our commitment to excellence in arts education, performance, and exhibition is not entirely market-driven. It means that we do not have to choose among these aspects of our mission. It means we can have some surprising and bizarre goings on, take risks, plan the Free State Festival, bring public arts grants to the City, and offer preschool, dance, theater, ceramics, and painting classes to families who otherwise could not afford them. We end 2015 with a tremendous sense of joy and accomplishment. We engaged more children, teenagers, and adults than ever before in our visual and performing arts classes. We kept our commitment to access for all students by maintaining a robust financial aid fund and making it available. We’ve provided more support than ever before to more artists through performance and exhibitions opportunities, housing, commissions, and professional development. Thank you to our donors who, by your generosity, make it possible for us to prioritize artistic excellence, experimentation, and access for everyone to the world of visual and performing arts. Please consider a gift to the Lawrence Arts Center. Your generosity makes our work possible. Thank you!

Now in its fourth year, ARTspace is the Lawrence Arts Center’s STEAM education program. Acknowledging the vital role art has in teaching innovative and creative thinking, the ARTspace program integrates visual art and science for students 1st-5th grades, and is focused on critical thinking, problem solving, and innovation. The integrated curriculum meets national art and science standards and was developed for the program through a grant from the Elizabeth Schultz Foundation of the Douglas County Community Foundation, Tradewind Energy, Enel Green Power, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Target. With support from the Hearst Foundation, the Lawrence Arts Center has expanded its STEAM program with the launch of the ARTspace After School. Each day focuses on a different aspect of STEAM education where students experience visual and performing arts activities that integrate the arts with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts. Classes incorporate visits by artists as well as STEM professionals. Students have the option to enroll one day a week or up to the whole week.

HANG12

school’s out & spring break workshops

HANG12 is a youth curatorial board of high school students in Lawrence that curates, produces, and installs monthly gallery shows for Final Friday exhibitions. HANG12 aims to create shows that highlight viewpoints and ideas important to society within Lawrence. Each month members work with a local artist or organization to collaborate on the final product, gaining skills from professionals on the process of constructing and maintaining a gallery show. HANG12 meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 3:306:00 at the Lawrence Arts Center. In two month periods they establish their show theme, create a call for submissions, move through the curatorial process, generate publicity, and solve the logistics of installing the show. HANG12 members work together with each gallery to install the show on one day the week of their Final Friday show opening. If you are seeking a venue to express yourself, a way to connect to other artists, or real life experience in the art world, then please join HANG12. Contact neal@lawrenceartscenter.org.

Kris Kuksi SOLO EXHIBITION January 15 – March 19 Reception January 29 | 5 to 9pm Insight ArtTalk February 1 | 7pm A native Kansan, Kris Kuksi has had a lifelong fascination with the unusual and macabre that influences his art today. His process requires countless hours to assemble, collect, manipulate, cut, and re-shape thousands of individual parts, uniting them into orchestral wholes that redefine the historical rise and fall of civilizations and envision possible futures for humanity. Each sculpture embodies trademarks of his philosophy and practice: timeless references to gods and goddesses; challenges to organized religion and morality; and struggles to understand and bend the limits of mortality. Kuksi’s work has has been featured in over 100 exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, as well as a number of international art magazines, book covers and theatrical posters, and is featured in both public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

2016 Benefit Art Auction Exhibition March 25 – April 23 Auction April 23 Reception March 25 | 5pm Featured Artist Kris Kuksi Established by artists in 1981 as a way to fund a not-for-profit gallery, the auction provides funding for the exhibitions program now occupying five spaces in the Arts Center and enriched by Art Talks, films, and events. The Art Auction is a community opportunity to support the Exhibitions Program at the Lawrence Arts Center. Approximately 150 pieces generously donated by artists will be on exhibit for four weeks to be auctioned during the April 23rd auction event, and visitors to the exhibition may make bids on both live and silent auction items.

Ceramic artist Lindsay Pichaske’s work challenges the order and comfortable classifications of life. Her sculptural animals are familiar but alien, seductive yet scary, animal yet also human. Questioning what separates humans from animals, her sculptures cross borders of the real and the imagined, the beautiful and the repugnant, living and dying, the creator and the constructed. Lindsay was a long-term resident artist and Taunt Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts. In 2013, Pichaske received an “Emerging Artist” Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is a Ceramics faculty member and area coordinator at the College of Southern Maryland. Her work is exhibited throughout the United States.

Naturally: A Group Exhibition SUSAN BEINER, JOHN BYRD, PATSY COX, JASON WALKER Curated by Ben Ahlvers January 15 – March 19 Reception January 29 | 5 to 9pm Insight ArtTalk Ben Ahlvers February 4 | 7pm The exhibition “Naturally” brings 4 artists together whose work explores the ever-changing relationship Americans have with the natural world. This multi-dimensional exploration juxtaposes the impact humans have on the environment with our relationship to technology. Artists featured in this exhibition explore these ideas through ceramic material using a variety of processes and techniques.

Ballet classes are carefully designed to develop awareness, musicality, and coordination as well as flexibility and strength. Students follow a sequential program and are placed at the appropriate level by an instructor. Students should expect to spend a minimum of two years at each level in order to accomplish each level’s objectives. At higher levels, students are required to attend a set minimum of classes per week. Students who cannot enroll in the required amount should consider an “open” class if available. Attire for youth classes follows firm guidelines which is available in the Dance Handbook. When possible, ballet classes are accompanied by a live pianist.

Written in response to the hate ministry of the Westboro Baptist Church, this award-winning play raises thought-provoking questions regarding responses to bigotry and the challenges of marital intimacy and does so with effortless poignancy and humor.

Carnival of the Animals

La Fille Mal Gardee

by Camille Saint-Saëns Directed by Ellie Goudie-Averill

Directed by Paige Comparato

Originally written as an amusement for friends, Carnival of the Animals has been delighting audiences for almost one hundred years. Occupying the same genre as Peter and the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals is one of the most popular symphonic productions, beloved by music enthusiasts young and old. On stage for the first time at the Lawrence Arts Center, this classic is reimagined as an original dance production featuring dancers from the School of Dance as an array of feathered and furry friends called to King Lion’s Court for a contest to rule the kingdom for a day.

Directly translated as “The Poorly Guarded Girl,” this classic story ballet tells the comical love story about a girl and her forbidden amour. One of the oldest and most important works in the ballet repertory, La Fille Mal Gardee outlines the romance between a young farmer and Lise, the only daughter of an ambitious widow and owner of a prosperous farm. Infused with good humor and youthful passion, dancers present a classic love story with choreography by Paige Comparato and Shannon Pickett based on Frederick Ashton’s original staging.
