Dear Friends, The Lawrence Arts Center is 40 years old this year! We are celebrating the birthday of this community-based arts center all year, but especially the weekend of September 25-26. Please join us Final Friday, September 25 for indoor and outdoor, free, family activities that celebrate what the Lawrence Arts Center is about every day: music, theater, dance, and visual arts for everyone. Saturday, September 26, we will have a benefit dinner for our children’s education program and financial aid fund. The Lawrence Arts Center’s first full year was 1975. Under the leadership of Ann Evans, and with the blessing of the City Commission, this nonprofit opened in the Carnegie Library building. From this moment, the Arts Center responded to community talent and passions, offering theater, dance, ceramics, then our arts-based preschool, the Seem-to-Be Players, and so much more. Today, at 940 New Hampshire, this commitment to community, to ideas, to 100% access for all families, and support for artists at all stages in their careers continues. We believe in supporting artistic excellence and in the role of art as a humanizing and democratizing force. We strive to keep access to studios, live music, art classes, and theater free or affordable, and to keep our financial aid fund available for all who need it. Check out opportunities for artists coming up this year: from Artists, Inc. at the Arts Center to grant writing workshops, various residencies and commissions. Please join us as a student, an artist, a collaborator, or an audience member.

AUGUST 14 – SEPTEMBER 19 RECEPTION AUGUST 28 | 5 TO 9PM Jon Swindler is an Associate Professor in the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens. Jon holds a B.F.A. from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas an M.F.A. at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Over the last several years, Jon has exhibited his work in numerous solo, competitive and invitational exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In the studio, the act of making (for Swindler) is a contradictory one, at once highly systematic, yet randomized. “An essential by-product of my creative activity is an abundance of printed remnants, or visual leftovers. Accumulated failures, incidents and accidents (on paper) acquire involuntary visual connotations. Everything derived out of my creative production is considered relevant and nothing superfluous. The plates and prints generated are regarded as components, not images. These components are combined to create naturally contrasting states of visual information; transitions of technique, mark, color and content that is born out of un-edited studio activity.” Out of this process the artist seeks to develop artworks, which feel by contrast calculated, intentional and well crafted.

AUGUST 14 – SEPTEMBER 19 RECEPTION AUGUST 28 | 5 TO 9PM

The harmony and contradictions that exist in relationships are thematically embedded in Barry Fitzgerald’s latest paintings and mixed media pieces. Metaphorical, narrative, and symbolic concepts are used to explore portrayals of personal, social and cultural observations.

Katsutoshi Yuasa. New Works

SEPTEMBER 14-19 A collaboration with the Lawrence Arts Center, Wonder Fair, the University of Kansas Printmaking Department. The week of September 14-19 Print week will be coming around again. This week full of exhibitions, print fair, workshops, presentations, and tours is dedicated to prints and the printmaking process. In 2013 the inaugural Print Week was launched with great success. The second biannual is poised to be even greater.

Print Fair SEPTEMBER 19 | 10AM TO 4PM Publishers and Printmakers from around the region will have prints on display and for sale. This print fair will bring together a tremendous variety and highest quality contemporary prints. Visitors will have the opportunity to view and acquire prints. This is a very unique opportunity to meet artists and talk with them about their work.

Printmaking connects the past and the future. Yuasa says, “Once we have lost something, we sometimes can’t remember what we have lost. It is easy to lose something vital in a moment. Last year, I visited a small town in the northeast of Japan which had suffered from the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. In this long sweep of razed, flat land, I couldn’t imagine there had even been a town in which people had lived. Also, it is very difficult to keep a feeling we have after a catastrophe. We have the gift of forgetting pain when it ends. We can’t keep everything in our minds, but we have things we have to remember. I make woodcut prints to hold memory, and it is my way of understanding and immortalizing everyday events as well as cataclysmic events. The memory and the materials are both present in a stratum of a print. A fragment of memory is very fragile, but in each woodblock print there is a clue for the future.”

Freak Power. Hunter S. Thompson SEPTEMBER 25 – JANUARY 2 CURATED BY DANIEL JOSEPH WATKINS ART, WRITING, ARTICLES, EPHEMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THOMPSON’S SHERIFF CAMPAIGN The Freak Power exhibition is a collection of political art and writing from Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 campaign for sheriff of Aspen and the surrounding Pitkin County in Colorado. Thompson created a controversial and widely publicized campaign by writing about political issues in his witty, savage voice and collaborating with local and international artists to create clever political graphics. The rare art from those campaigns is highly sought after by collectors, and much of the work has not been seen by the public since the campaign. There is also a considerable amount of Thompson’s writing from that time that has not been republished since 1970. Curator Daniel Joseph Watkins has searched exhaustively through archives and private collections to gather the art and writing for this exhibition. The story told through this multidisciplinary show focuses on political art, writing and history.

The Paintings of Albert Bloch SEPTEMBER 25 – JANUARY 2 RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 25 | 5 TO 9PM The Lawrence Arts Center, working with the Albert Bloch Estate and University of Kansas Professor David Cateforis, will present oil paintings and watercolors by Albert Bloch. This exhibit will feature works spanning his career and will include watercolors that have not been exhibited before. Albert Bloch was born on August 2, 1882 in St. Louis, Missouri. By 1911 Bloch became increasingly interested in the work of Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. During the fall of that year they met Albert Bloch in Europe and were impressed with his work. Then, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc invited the young artist to join their new group, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). In December 1911, The Blue Rider had their first exhibition in Munich, and Albert Bloch showed six pieces, more than any other artist. He was the only American represented in this exhibit. Following his return to the United States in 1915, the Art Institute of Chicago held an exhibit of his work. Albert Bloch could have capitalized on being the “American Blue Rider,” but he was determined to become independent from the art market and decided to exhibit only by invitation. From 1922-1923, Albert Bloch taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Then, in 1923 the artist took a teaching position at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, Kansas. He remained there until he retired in 1947. After his retirement Albert Bloch continued to paint until 1958, two years before his death in 1961. Visit www.osher.ku.edu for information about the Albert Bloch Osher Institute event!
