SPORTS JOURNALISM

Approximate cost: $1,600

In this winterim, you will experience the life of the sportswriter and immerse yourself in sports journalism and media. You will cover events and write game articles, interview athletes and professionals from various occupations within the sports world, develop feature articles to show your “takes” on the sports world and dabble in podcasting. Our time will begin locally, following the local and regional scene, and the group will head to NYC for a few days to cover the Big East Basketball Tournament.

STAND UP COMEDY

Approximate cost: $350

They say laughter is the best medicine so technically by the end of this course you will all be pharmacists. What do we find funny and why is it funny to us? Many people use humor to express themselves, connect with others, and look at the world through a unique lens. This course will ask students to investigate why humor is important and to help discover their own individual sense of humor. Through watching many different styles of comedy (both live and on video), talking to working comedians and group discussion, each student will craft their own stand-up comedy set which will be performed in a culminating show.

STORYTELLING WITH A CULTURAL TWIST

Storytelling with a cultural twist! Create. Empower. Inspire.

Bring the stories of children to life. Join us as we interview kids from different backgrounds in our community and write a book in which they are the protagonists. Let us create a world of wonder for young children and help inspire a love of reading! One pen! Endless possibilities! The writing adventure awaits!

TASTE OF ASIAN FOOD AND CULTURE: A HANDS-ON CULINARY JOURNEY

Approximate cost: $500

Embark on a flavorful journey across Asia in this interactive culinary experience! Taste of Asian Food and Culture introduces you to iconic dishes from Japan, Vietnam, China, and beyond—each rich with unique ingredients, techniques, and cultural significance. Learn how to prepare sushi from a professional chef, and enjoy a delicious lunch in a local restaurant.

By the end of the session, students will recreate their favorite dish and share their appreciation for the culture and culinary traditions behind it. .

THE MINDFUL PALETTE

Approximate cost: $425

Explore self-expression and inner calm through mindful painting—with a splash of creativity and maybe a little dirt. Each day blends peaceful artmaking, guided meditation, writing, and reflection. We’ll create in the studio and outdoors using natural materials. Think sand mandalas, stone spirals, and sculptures that might blow away in the wind. Along the way, we’ll find inspiration from artists and take a museum field trip (because even mindful artists need a little culture break). Whether you're here for the Zen or the art, you'll leave with a clearer mind and a very colorful perspective.

THE SYSTEM

Approximate cost: $1,600

In this Winterim, students will travel to Boston and Washington, D.C. where they will visit the local, state, and federal courts, legislative houses, law enforcement agencies, and jails that make up “the system” within which we live our daily lives. Students will meet the real people who work in these institutions and learn how they work to solve the various problems that we face as a society. By the end of the term, students will see that the real system is even more complicated and interesting than anything depicted in film or television

WINDRUSH FARM: HORSES HELPING PEOPLE

Approximate cost: $900

This course will explore and expose students to horsemanship and therapeutic horseback riding through interactions with the horses, participants, and instructors at Windrush Farm. Therapeutic horseback riding is a program in which clients with differing abilities and challenges participate in horse-related activities as a means of therapy. Students will learn to care for horses and participate in therapeutic riding lessons, providing support to the riders. Students will learn to design lessons for the clients, and will each get two riding lessons of their own.

WOMEN IN SPORTS

Approximate cost: $500

In the Women in Sports Winterim, students will explore the transformative power of Title IX and the trailblazing women who have shaped the landscape of athletics. Each student will research a specific athlete, team, or aspect of Title IX, sharing their discoveries and reflections through daily video blogs. Throughout the program, students will engage directly with leaders and changemakers in women’s sports, gaining insight into both the progress made and the challenges that remain. These conversations will also provide valuable networking opportunities for students interested in pursuing sports-related careers in media, business, coaching, or advocacy. A highlight of the experience includes a trip to New York City, where students will visit NBA Headquarters, connect with a Lawrence Academy alumna now working at FIFA, and meet with professionals at the Women’s Sports Foundation. Our Winterim culminates with a PWHL game at Agganis Arena, celebrating the growing visibility and influence of women’s professional hockey.

YOU’RE SEW TALENTED: DESIGN YOUR OWN SUSTAINABLE

FASHION LINE

Approximate cost: $450

Students will transform thrifted garments and fabric remnants into styled clothing items and a reusable shopping tote. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, and develop skills such as taping, altering, and reshaping garments, invisible zipper insertion, and how to sew on latches as shown and be guided by an expert seamster.

On the island of Sicily, empires have risen and fallen, leaving behind monuments, art, and traditions that reveal the clash and blending of civilizations. From the ruins of Ancient Greece and Rome to the mosaics of the Normans, from the tremors of Mount Etna to the resilience of Sicilian villages, students will embark on a journey through three thousand years of human history. This course is a mission of discovery. By walking the landscapes, tasting the traditions, and engaging with the people of Sicily, students will learn how culture, power, and geography shape identity and community across time.

WINTERIM 2026 COURSE OFFERINGS

A MARCH TO THE SUMMITS

Approximate cost: $750

This Winterim will embark on a hiking expedition across all six New England states, from the rocky coastal trails of Rhode Island to the snowcovered summits, ridgelines, and icy mountain peaks of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, experiencing the environmental variety of the Northeast. This challenging course includes 50 miles of hiking and over 12,000 feet of elevation gain. In addition to physical endurance, students will develop winter hiking and backcountry skills, including navigation, cold-weather layering, trail safety, and route planning. They’ll also learn about the geology, ecology, and history of the places we traverse. Expect snow, wind, ice, and spectacular views; this is an adventure for those ready to embrace the elements and push their limits!

ADVENTURES IN ART AND GLASS WORKS

Approximate cost: $650

In this Winterim, students will learn how to design, cut, and assemble stained glass, and how to use a kiln to create fused-glass artwork. Working at the Periwinkle Art & Glassworks studio with professional glassworkers, we will also have the opportunity to hear from guest artists about the art of glassblowing. Field trips to local art museums and churches (to view stained glass) will complement our work in the studio!

BEYOND THE GAME: NAVIGATING CAREERS IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY

Join us to learn about the backgrounds and stories of countless individuals who are thriving in meaningful sports careers. “Beyond the Game” offers a unique opportunity to explore the diverse and dynamic landscape of the modern athletics industry. Through site visits and meetings, students will gain insights from a wide range of professionals, including sports media figures, athletic administrators, business operations staff, coaches, and more. Learn how lessons of perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and community in academic and athletic pursuits can lead to a lifelong career.

CAPTURING AMERICA’S BEAUTY: PHOTOGRAPHING AMERICA’S GEOLOGICAL WONDERS

Approximate cost: $3,500

Immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of Arizona and Utah, where geology, ecology, and photography come together for an unforgettable Winterim experience. Explore iconic national parks like Bryce Canyon, Zion, and the Grand Canyon, while mastering techniques for photographing vast landscapes, intricate rock formations, and desert flora and fauna.

CLAY AND KILN

Approximate cost: $400

Did you love working with Play Doh and were devastated when your creations dried up and cracked apart? Are you curious about pottery and the art of creating functional pots and sculptures with your own hands? Then clay and kiln is the perfect course for you! This class will cover many pottery making skills, including wheel throwing and hand-building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab. Utilizing what we learned, we will form the clay into cups, bowls, and other unique objects. Surface decoration will be explored through sculpting, imprinting objects to create textures, painting colored slips, and relief carving. We will glaze and fire our pottery, making it food-safe and durable.

EPIC EATS

Approximate cost: $1,500

Students will develop an appreciation for both making and eating food. We will push ourselves outside of our comfort zones through experimenting with new foods and different cooking styles. Each day, we will produce a meal to enjoy for lunch as well as a treat to be taken home. Students will engage in friendly team-based competitions throughout the week. In addition, students will participate in field trips off site to learn about the business and preparation aspects of the restaurant business. At the end of our session, students will receive a cookbook full of recipes from the program.

ESCAPE FROM LA

Approximate cost: $500

In Escape From LA, students will explore and experience local escape rooms to spark creativity and teamwork. Using these experiences as inspiration, we’ll focus on collaboration, problem-solving, and communication as we design and build our own on-campus escape room. Together, students will craft unique puzzles, clues, and solutions that challenge and engage participants. By the end of the course, our community will have the chance to experience the escape room — maybe you’ll get to try it too!

FAMILY TREE.

Approximate cost: $350

Learn about your family and piece together your story in the context of history. You will be able to work with a professional genealogist and travel to research facilities. We will help you uncover clues to your family’s past, and you will gain an understanding of the relationship between genealogy and history. In the end, you will produce a short digital documentary that will serve as an artifact for generations to come.

FULL CIRCLE FISHING

Approximate cost: $3,500

Students will spend the first four days of the program building two custom spinning rods and learning fishing skills like casting and knots. Then we will head to Houston and Seadrift, Texas for the next six days to test our equipment and skills. Students will get the chance to both saltwater and freshwater fish under the tutelage of local expert guides in awesome locations. Students will also get to visit with local experts and industry professionals to learn how a passion for fishing can turn into a career and/or a lifelong pastime.

GIVE KIDS THE WORLD

Approximate cost: $3,100

At Give Kids The World, you will create happy memories for children with critical illnesses and their families. You will live in a safe, large house in a resort community nearby and work as a team to prepare meals and do chores. In addition to spending the majority of your time volunteering, you will have the opportunity to experience some of central Florida’s attractions.

HANDS ON LEARNING: AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

Approximate cost: $300

Students will be led by an experienced ASL instructor from The Learning Center for the Deaf (Framingham, Mass.). Participants will develop the ability to communicate in sign and will gain an appreciation for deaf culture. Classroom instruction will be paired with field trips to both the Learning Center for the Deaf and the Beverley School for the Deaf (Beverley, Mass.). Students will have countless moments of mental

Velcro that will allow them to learn, use, and retain ASL. All students will participate in a capstone project that will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge gained over the course of this program. This is a dynamic, active course that can be used as an introduction to ASL or a stepping stone to further study in the subject matter.

HOME ON THE RANGE: LA GOES WEST

Approximate cost: $3,100

Home on the Range will take our students to West Texas, where we experience ranch life and what it means to live on and with the land. Most days, we will ride horses, developing skill and confidence, and engage in work like building fences and helping at a cattle ranch. We also explore Big Bend National Park, state parks, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and other historic and ecological sites to better understand the history of and our responsibility towards the land.

KIDS AND COMMUNITY: SERVICE LEARNING IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Approximate cost: $3,400

In this Winterim, participants will spend the majority of their time working with Dominican girls at the Mariposa Foundation, leading them in their annual Olympic-style athletic competitions. LA students will also complete work projects such as gardening and clean-up. We will immerse ourselves in the Dominican community, culture, food, music, and traditions and explore the Dominican north coast, where we will eat local food, visit towns and beaches, and hike up to waterfalls to swim.

LA BUILDS: FABRICATION AND DESIGN

Approximate cost: $300

This course will engage you in hands-on construction, engineering, and design challenges that foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Through a series of real-world problem-solving activities, you will work both independently and in small teams to design, build, and test solutions using a variety of materials and tools. The curriculum emphasizes principles of iterative design and teamwork as it provides you with a foundational experience in engineering practices, design fundamentals, and project-based learning.

LA GIRLS LEAD

Approximate cost: $550

LA Girls Lead will explore the social constructs of gender representation and stereotypes in our society. Students will participate in a series of leadership and self-advocacy trainings. Students will also engage in the Ladies Luncheon Series: Reimagined, where they will meet extraordinary women leading their fields of work. We look at the history of women’s leadership in the country and visit Seneca Falls, New York, the home of the first women’s rights convention.

LEADING MEN: CHAMPIONING HEALTHY MASCULINITY IN THE LA COMMUNITY

Approximate cost: $435

Leading Men is an opportunity for students to help redefine what it means to be a man at LA; grow as an individual, a member of a group, a leader, and a member of the community; and understand their role in helping other men take responsibility for the kind of man they want to be. Students will engage in a series of active, challenging, and fun leadership and team-building exercises — including adventure and ropes courses, rock climbing, escape rooms, and more — as well as structured discussions and dialogues about healthy and unhealthy masculinity.

QUILTED DESIGNS

Approximate cost: $565

Need a new blankie for your room? Tired of getting an aching neck on the bus ride to your game? Learn to design and sew cozy projects of your choice, like pillows, blankets, tote bags, wall hangings, stuffies, etc. while you learn how to use a sewing machine and the other creative tools of the trade. Add your personal touch to each project and show them off to your friends and family!

ROOTS TO REEFS: THE BELIZE CONNECTION EXPEDITION

Approximate cost: $3,500

From roots to reefs, discover how every connection tells the story of Belize. This course gives students hands-on experience in ecology, conservation, and culture in Belize.Students will learn about biodiversity and marine life while trekking through forests, wetlands, and mangroves and snorkeling in coral reefs. They will learn conservation skills through lionfish removal, coral nursery visits, and manatee rehabilitation, and gain cultural insight by exploring Mennonite agriculture and meeting local fishers. Throughout the program, students will learn how communities and ecosystems are interconnected

RUSTIC “FLIPPIN” BEAUTIES

Approximate cost: $750

In this hands-on Winterim, students will roll up their sleeves and bring new life to old furniture — transforming discarded or outdated pieces into beautiful, functional works of art. Rustic “Flippin” Beauties blends design, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship, teaching students how to sand, repair, paint, and refinish while learning the fundamentals of sustainable business. Alongside the artistry of refurbishing, they’ll explore pricing, marketing, and resale strategies to understand what it means to turn creativity into impact. By the end of the course, students will have completed at least two fully refurbished pieces and will showcase their work in a final pop-up sale, with proceeds supporting future student-led sustainability projects or local charities. Rustic “Flippin” Beauties empowers students to think like designers, makers, and entrepreneurs.

SEAS THE DAY

Approximate cost: $3,500

Students will be studying and training to receive their first level IYT (International Yacht Training) certification. This certificate shows that they can perform skills offshore, sail during daylight hours, and in moderate wind/sea conditions. This will all be happening as we sail between St. Martin, St. Eustatius, Tintamarre, and Saba — all beautiful Islands in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean!

SPARTAN SCUBA: CORALS, COVES AND CONSERVATION

Approximate cost: $3,500

Learn to SCUBA dive and experience the marine world like you never have before. Travel with us to the beautiful island of Curacao to some of the best shore dives on the planet. You will become a certified PADI diver through this program, all while learning about the importance of marine science and conservation.
