After all, all the leaders, parents, advisors, members, Lawrence County Fair Board, Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee, Penn State Extension, friends, and supporters of the program, collectively created an unforgettable week for our 4-H members, giving them an experience of a lifetime—and we could not be anymore thankful.

2019 Annual Autumn Bash **VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!** Each year, more than 100 volunteers come together to host the Annual Autumn Bash, that serves more than 800 families in the surrounding area.

The Annual Autumn Bash is for people with disabilities to enjoy an evening together with family and friends.

Some of the activities include accessible hayrides, horseback riding with spotters, crafts, clown, puppet show, bonfire, potluck supper, scavenger hunt, face painting, music, and so much more.

WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF VOLUNTEERS! PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING AS WE ARE SHORT VOLUNTEERS!!!!

Volunteer hours can be awarded for those that need them!

4-H Food Cooking Challenge The Challenge: The team members must apply their creativity, knowledge of nutrition, food preparation, food safety, and leadership skills, and creativity to prepare a recipe using a clue, secret ingredients, and ingredients found in a common pantry – then make a presentation about it to the panel of judges. The presentation will include information about the nutritional value, serving size, food preparation skills and decision-making used to prepare the recipe and plate the food serving. Onsite preparation of the food allows 4-H members to demonstrate their culinary and food safety skills and teamwork to the judges.

You do not need to be enrolled in a cooking project to compete! More information to come at a later date.

Ag 101 Stage Bring your public speaking skills to thousands of visitors at the 2019 PA Farm Show!

Build on your public speaking skills while educating Farm Show visitors!

WHO: All 4-H members are invited to participate! Presentations can be done individually or in teams.

WHAT: Presentations about your 4-H project that have an educational component for the general public who will be attending.

Presentations last 30 minutes and include a Q&A period with the audience.

WHEN: Presentations will take place during the Farm Show on January 5-12, 2019, but you will be given a specific time.

WHERE: PA Farm Show Complex on the AG 101 Stage (next to the Food Court in the Expo Hall).

Tractor/Small Gas Engine 4-H Club

FIRST MEETING ESTABLISHED! We are going to be starting a Tractor /Small Gas engine club.

Pennsylvania 4-H State Council PURPOSE: The Pennsylvania 4-H State Council is a premier group of young people selected from around the state to be the official spokespeople for the Pennsylvania 4-H program.

MISSION AND VISION: The mission of the Pennsylvania 4-H State Council is to promote and represent 4-H in everything they do with integrity, positive teamwork, and pride.

The vision of the Pennsylvania 4-H State Council is to strive for active participation in all aspects of the 4-H program and become recognized for leadership and dedication.

The Pennsylvania 4-H State Council’s core areas of focus are leadership development, event planning, and promotion and advocacy of the Pennsylvania 4-H program.

Being a Council member means giving back to the Pennsylvania 4-H program. The possibilities are endless because the Council members' talents and experiences are so diverse.

Lawrence County 4-H Open House ATTENTION 4-H LEADERS AND MEMBERS! The Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee will be hosting a Lawrence County 4-H Open House at the New Castle Tractor Supply during the Fall Paper Clover Campaign, tentatively set for Sunday, October 13, 2019.

4-H Clubs are encouraged to set-up a display to promote their club and projects that they offer—they can bring a pop-up tent, display board, host an activity, and bring animals—anything to positively promote the club and program. The idea is to set-up the parking lot like a mini-carnival with 4-H exhibits and activities. In addition, the Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee will be serving hot dogs and popcorn and have prizes and giveaways.

More event specifics will be emailed to 4-H leaders, but we hope to see you there! Please invite prospective members!

2020 FARM SHOW MARKET LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS—ATTENTION! Exhibitors exhibiting Market Livestock at the 2020 Farm Show, will have to complete the National Quality Assurance Program Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). This is the approved National Program that has been accepted as an equivalent to Adult Programs. Several packers in different species now require a national Quality Assurance training before they will purchase livestock. As a result, we are now requiring this be accomplished for Farm Show so that we can secure packer bids. This can be accomplished online at http://yqca.org/. The program does require a $12 fee—there will be no face-to-face trainings offered.

IMPORTANT: Exhibitors must log in with their 4HOnline information so the completion is automatically recorded and a printed certificate is not required at the Farm Show!

PA Farm Show Scholarship Attention 4-H and FFA Members: The 2020 PA Farm Show Scholarship will be available on the PA Farm Show website in a few weeks. Please watch for an email on the official release from the state 4-H and FFA offices. However don’t wait until the release to begin working on the scholarship. The 2019 scholarship form (from last year) is available now and even though there will be some minor changes to the 2020 application, the 2019 application gives you an idea of what information you can begin gathering now so you are prepared to complete the application in a timely manner by the 2020 application due date of September 15, 2019. In the past, scholarship amounts have been close to $3,000 so it is worth investing time to make sure you have all the correct information plus reference letters gathered to present in the application. Watch your email for further information about the release or check in on the farm show website for the new application. But don’t delay and start gathering information today!

The Mane Attractions 4-H Club had so much fun this month! Many of our members showed at the Lawrence County Fair with their horses. Everyone did fantastic! We all had fun during fair week, despite the weather. It was good times with good friends! Also, congrats to everyone moving on to Districts! We had quite a few members go this year. Submitted by Mariska Zias, News Reporter The Trail Blazers 4-H Club met on Tuesday, August 6th, at the New Galilee Fire Hall. Madison Soukovich did a presentation on tie-back surgery, and Nathan Dessler did a presentation on making a horse first aid kit and passed out a list of things that should be included in the kit. The club also worked in our project books and were reminded that they need to be turned in on Saturday, August 17th, at the fair. We are looking in to going to a corn maze in September or October, and our club Christmas party will be Friday, December 13th at 6:30 pm. Members are to bring a finger-type food and a $5 grab bag. We will also be having a painting party just like we did last year during our Christmas party. There will be more details as the date gets closer. All of our business meetings (unless otherwise noted) will now be held at the New Galilee Fire Hall instead of the New Galilean Presbyterian Church. Lawrence County 4-H Horse News and Notes (Continued) One member of the Wayne Buckaroos 4-H Club, Cheyenne Beatty, competed in the PA 4-H Junior Championship Show on July 27-28th in Center Hall, PA. Cheyenne brought her mini yearling with her, named Lucky Duck. Cheyenne and Lucky Duck participated in 2 classes.

First, was the Showmanship class, and placed with a red award. Second, Cheyenne and Lucky Duck participated in the In-Hand Trail class and placed with the yellow award, out of 69 participants. The Junior Championship Show gave colored awards, such as blue award, red award, rather than 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. “It was a wonderful experience and I’m glad I attended. I was impressed with the sportsmanship everyone showed. People from other counties cheered for each other and offered encouragement, after every class.”, says Cheyenne. Next year, Cheyenne plans to attend with Lucky Duck and her 3 year old horse. Great job Cheyenne!

These funds will be directly used for member scholarships for youth attending local, regional, and state educational opportunities and we could not be anymore thankful for AgChoice’s generous donation!

Paw Printz 4-H Club We got to show our dogs at the fair this year, and boy was it fun! Even though it was raining cats and dogs during our demonstration, the dogs did great! Everyone stayed calm and relaxed when the wind blew away our cones and when our microphone stopped working. I would also like to thank the leaders for everything they did for us at the fair. They helped it run smoothly. We had a wonderful turnout this year. 4-H Celebration Awards The following awards will be presented at the 2019 Lawrence County 4-H Celebration, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2019– An opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our youth members and recognize our adult volunteers!

The following awards are all due by 4:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1, 2019 to the Lawrence County Extension Office.

AgChoice Farm Credit Award AgChoice Farm Credit will provide record book awards to 4-H members who have kept accurate and complete records in the following project areas: 1. Dairy

2. Beef

3. Sheep

4. Swine

5. Horse

6. Plant Science

7. Small Animals in Ag Production (includes rabbits, dairy goats, and poultry)

A $25.00 cash award will be made to the winner of the best record book in each project area, and the best overall record book winner in the county may receive a $100.00 savings bond and a certificate. Overall, the books will be judged on four points: Accuracy, Completeness, Neatness, and Summary Statement.

To compete for the award, members must complete the Summary Statement and submit it, along with their completed project book to the Lawrence County Extension Office by 4:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee Scholarship The Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee may award scholarships to students enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution, but may change pending on the number and quality of applications. Applicants must have been in the Lawrence County 4-H Program within the last five years. The Extension Office will verify member status from our records. Individuals may only receive this award once. A committee comprised of Development Committee members will make the selection. Monies donated to the Lawrence County 4-H from gifts, personal donations, the United Way, and the 4-H Auction go to sponsor this scholarship as well as other events.

To apply, applicants must submit all the material outlined in the “Scholarship Checklist” document, in a portfolio format, to the Extension Office by 4:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Junior Leader Award For all members completing Jr. Leader Projects, the Jr. Leader Project Books, along with the “4-H Teen Leadership Project Plan” addition are due to the Extension Office by 4:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1, 2019. Accurate and complete Jr. Leader Books, with the completed “4-H Teen Leadership Project Plan”, will be eligible to receive monetary awards.

In addition, at the 4-H Celebration, we will also recognize our “Friend of 4-H” Awardees, Lawrence County 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees, Club Achievements, the “Spirit of 4-H” Award, Leader Awards, and more. With nearly 200 attendees annually, it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

Lawrence County 4-H Kick-Off Dance GET YOUR DANCIN’ SHOES READY! We cannot WAIT for 2020 when we welcome everyone back for another great 4-H year.

Therefore, the Lawrence County 4-H Program Development Committee is looking to host a Kick-Off Dance in February of 2020 for Lawrence County 4-H members and their guests to welcome everyone back from the winter.

Tentatively, please hold the third weekend of February (14th and 15th) and be on the lookout for more information in the newsletter as it becomes available.

If you are interested in assisting with these efforts, please contact the Extension Office.

Pennsylvania 4-H Engineering Design Challenge IT’S TIME TO START BUILDING! If you are interested in the Pennsylvania 4-H Engineering Design Challenge, please contact the Extension Office ASAP! Teams will consist of 3-10 youth (along with two adult coaches), who will complete in a regional competition in the fall of 2019. Regional winners will exhibit their machines at the 2020 PA Farm Show. Youth will be required to show their engineering design process through the completion of an engineering notebook that highlights their scientific thought-process, engineering lessons learned, and written list of all steps of the machine.

THE REGIONAL CONTEST WILL BE HELD OCTOBER 12, 2019.

Science of Agriculture Challenge The Science of Ag Challenge engages youth in navigating the myriad of opportunities in their local environment. With a mentor, youth utilize problem-based learning to identify an issue.

This experiential approach creates solutions to localized problems. This challenge rewards creative approaches and provides career development support through post-secondary scholarships. This experience will draw together the 4-H program, agricultural business partners, and post-secondary institutions to create experiences for a 21st Century workforce by investing in our youth.
