Alexandre Hochstraser’s jury trial is set to begin May 7. He is charged with the murder of his live-in girlfriend, Dolores Gonzalez.
Hochstraser was arrested on June 5, 2005 after police discovered a dismembered human body in large plastic storage tubs in Hochstraserʼs Volkswagen Jetta. The body was later identified as his live-in girlfriend, Mission College employee Dolores Gonzales. Shortly after Hochstraserʼs arrest, a friend and coworker of Gonzales vented her frustration with a message to Hochstraser on her personal blog.
“I’d buy an audio of you screaming your f**king head off in pain. Hell, maybe it would help me sleep at night.” - June 24, 2005 blog entry message to Hochstraser “May [the men in prison] show you lots of love late in the night, by the droves would be my preference. Iʼd buy an audio of you screaming your f**king head off in pain. Hell, maybe it would help me sleep at night.” Hochstraserʼs trial will take place at San Joseʼs Hall of Justice.

An international student and the daughter of the current InterClub Council Chair were both voted into office unopposed last Wednesday. The service terms of ICC Chair of Finance Monica Pen, ICC Chair of Programs Jordan Eldridge and ICC Chair George Smith expire at the end of this quarter. Elaine Smith, the new ICC chair and second year De Anza College student, wants to eventually enter the nursing field. Smith said she finds helping
people rewarding and would like to apply her attributes to the council. “My drive is to help people, listen to what people have to say and do whatever I can to help,” said Smith. “Probation or non-probation, I want to treat all clubs equally and help everyone in the clubs personally, academically and any way I can as long as itʼs legal within the ICC scope.” When asked about her future plans, Smith said she doesnʼt want to change anything about the council. “I donʼt think Iʼd like to
change anything at the moment or make anything better,” said the former ICC representative for De Anza Red Cross. “The current staff did such a good job, I want to try to match the standard theyʼve set.” Jonathan Yueng, a first year De Anza student, studied and worked as a managerʼs assistant at a law firm in England for two years before he came to De Anza and co-founded the Economics and Law Club. During his speech, the new chair of finance acknowledged potential doubts the ICC might have had about him.

De Anza’s ‘Foodstore’ to close in March Helen Zou LA VOZ
With the Campus Center cafeteria undergoing construction until fall, the Foodstore served as a substitute for providing students with soup, fresh sandwiches, salad, and other hot meals. However, this surrogate food source will no longer be available in about a month. “The Campus Center kitchen will be closing down for renovation at the end of March,” said Patrick Gannon, Director of Food Services. “Up until now, weʼve been able to use the [Campus Center] kitchen for preparing food with the knowledge that at some stage, we would need to vacate for the renovation.” Because the kitchen will not be available from March 23 on,
Construction of the Whole Foods Market on the corner of Stevens Creek Boulevard and Stelling Road should have De Anza College students eagerly awaiting its opening this summer. Along with café-style seating, free wireless Internet and a wider selection of products, its convenient location will allow for more students to have a timely lunch break. “Itʼs also going to have restaurant-style seating, thereʼs going to be wine tasting [and] there will be someone from the prepared foods department teaching cooking classes,” said Beth Laskosky, a Whole Foods employee and De Anza student. “Itʼs going to be a lot more customer-friendly.” The new store will replace one located a few blocks down Stevens Creek from De Anza. It will measure approximately 60,000 square feet, three times the size of the current store, making it the biggest Whole Foods in Northern California. “Pretty much the store [is] too small. Itʼs a move, not an expansion. Weʼre moving into a brand new store,” Laskosky said. De Anza student Scott Waiblinger can be considered one of the potentially new customers interested in the move.
