The De Anza College Dons football team hosted the Gavilan Rams on Oct. 18 in a back and forth game with six lead changes. The Dons were trailing in the fourth quarter and completed the comeback, defeating the Rams 31-24.

With 10:47 remaining in the first quarter, the Dons capped off their first drive with a Lawrence Taylor five-yard touchdown run. This put the Dons ahead 7-0 early in the contest. “If a player on my team is struggling, then they need to use their practice time to figure out their mistakes, so they know not to make the same mistake again,” head coach Dan Atencio said. “Our team is able to play with confidence, and the fresh-

man players this year are definitely improving with their game play.” After a few stalled drives for each team, the Rams finally tied the score at seven with 9:58 to go in the second quarter. They did so on a one-yard run by Rams running back Connor Farotte. On the Rams’ next possession, they took the See DONS, Page 7

New certificate and degree programs at De Anza College this year include an associate’s degree in journalism, and certificates in environmental studies, leadership and childhood development. The journalism degree has been a long-awaited inclusion to media and mass communications studies by many De Anza students. “The journalism degree teaches students civil engagement, empowerment and what it means to be concerned

about the issues,” said journalism professor Shagun Kaur. “Instructors are working on bringing more integration in technology to teaching and engaging students on and offline, such as iTunes, YouTube, Facebook and podcasting,” said Kaur, who wants students to find their own connection to journalism by matching available technologies with their own interests. “If one student likes to get their news from CNN and another from The Daily Show, we have to make that OK.” Skills obtained in the journalism
