The week ahead JAPANESE-AMERICAN DAY OF REMEMBRANCE The California History Center presents the seventh annual De Anza College Day of Remembrance. Join with Japanese-American communities throughout the country who annually commemorate Feb. 19, 1942, when an executive order was signed that led to the imprisonment of over 120,000 JapaneseAmericans without due process or regard for their constitutional rights. Speakers include Shizue Seigel, author of “In Good Conscience: Supporting Japanese-Americans During the Internment,” and Richard Konda, executive director of the Asian Law Alliance of San Jose. AFRICAN-AMERICAN GREEK NIGHT The Black Student Union and the African Ancestry Association present African-American Greek Night. For information contact Wendy White at whitewendy@deanza.edu. The event, which will be held in rooms A & B in the Hinson Campus Center, will last from 6 - 9 p.m.

ASL GAME NIGHT The American Sign Language Club is hosting a game night at De Anza, followed by an 8:30 p.m. social at Starbucks. Participants only need to know ASL numbers and letters to play Deaf Bingo. For information email deanzaamericansignlanguageclub@gmail.com. With a few smacks of the gavel, De Anza College’s Associated Student Body President, Terell Sterling, began the meeting that would determine how much funding the DASB would give to De Anza’s programs. The DASB Senators sat in a “U” formation surrounding the audience, some wearing matching maroon polo shirts with a name plate propped up in front of each of them. Their duty was to determine which programs deserved to receive a portion of the remaining $30,000. The attendees comprised of program and club directors as well as students. Before each presenter had three minutes to address the DASB, Esha Menon, vice president of finance and budget said,

De Anza College participated in a Global Warming Solutions teach-in, along with over 100 other college campuses across the nation, on Feb. 5. The event was co-sponsored by the Institute for Community and Civic Engagement, the Department of Environmental Studies, Working

event. Students and faculty joined together from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., to listen to panelists and speakers discuss the effects of globalization on earth’s natural habitats, the need for a green-industry to create jobs, minimize pollution and what steps De Anza along with the city of Cupertino could take to perpetuate this movement, locally. One of the first presenters, Robert Cormia, an instructor from Foothill College, spoke about the importance of taking a systems-approach to advance the role of green technology in industries. The purpose of a systems-approach is to understand that there is no one single solution to create a sustainable environment, rather an entire system, comprised of separate entities such as: renewable energy, a transmission grid, smart energy, efficiency, electric transportation, alternative fuels and Lead in Energy and Environmental Design certified buildings.

“We went through two days of budget deliberations and our revenue is the lowest it’s been in four years in addition to the budget cuts. So we had to take actions.” Then, she said to those hoping for more funding, “Now it’s time for you to convince us.” Some presenters said they appreciate the funds they have been allotted in the past. Latina/o Empowerment At De Anza, requested $5,052 and was budgeted to receive none. Outreach, a program that reaches out to high school, received zero funding as well. “We would be willing to take less,” George Smith said.
