Small town girl, Tiffany Jorge, is making it big on the shoe fashion stage.    The owner of Tiffany Jorge Inc., she loves making her customers happy. “I remember when I put my first pair of Jimmy Choo's, my face just lit up,” she explained. “I want to give that same feeling to other people.” Raised in Williams, California, a farming community about 70 miles north of Sacramento, nestled on the I-5, Jorge found her passion for fashion after moving to San Jose for college at seventeen.

I’m probably not going to do a whole lot IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO? Go to Italy and spend 6 months trolling through all the fashion IF YOU COULD GO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Milan Fashion Week, it’s on my list of to do’s FUN FACT? I’m an avid salsa dancer, I love to dance.

Her first job was in retail, working at a clothing store named Merry-Go-Round. “I loved the atmosphere,” she described. “I had access to all the current trends and it was something I really enjoyed.” After a career in sales, Tiffany, her husband and son, moved to Rocklin where she took a job as a partner in a tech firm. But she knew she was destined to do something else and began designing shoes. “I wanted to do something I was passionate about and I decided I love shoes,” she said. “I believe when you enjoy what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.” Tiffany Jorge Inc. launched two years ago and has been growing ever since. The company is unique in that it is predominately an online format, shipping as far as New York. And although the warehouse is located in Rocklin, she admits most of her clients are located in Texas.    Something you will also find on the website is phone chargers. Having the technology background, Jorge found a manufacturer who makes phone accessories and she just fell in love with the fun designs they had to offer. “They really are the must-have accessory,” she explained. “And they’re so cute!” The tech accessories can be found at several local nail salons, hair salons, Chevron gas stations and Shell gas stations. The website also offers clothing, mostly Jorge’s designs and vintage finds. Using an Italian shoe manufacturer, Jorge was educated and enlightened about the shoe and retail industries. “They brought me into their world and I loved it,” she said. She confesses that there are some downsides such as some items not being able to be imported into the U.S. and having to analyze manufacturing and production processes. Being raised in a European environment,

she draws her inspiration from her Portguese heritage. “I attempt to bring people that flavor and excitement,” she added. She is also intrigued and motivated by top end designers (Did I mention she was a Jimmy Choo fan?) Jorge’s passion for shoes and fashion is evident in her business, and there are no plans to slow down anytime soon. “It’s a good thing to look back and see what I have accomplished,” she said. “I feel people should follow their passion.”

We might have to wait months to wear the spring/summer 2015 fashion collections that just graced the runways of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, however we can immediately start wearing the trends in hair and makeup. Hair is a form of fabric, and by using products and styling tools, we can make many creations. Hair on the runway was all about creating texture. Using a mini crimper creates texture and formed into a Bohemian French braid was the ultimate style. Braids in all forms stood out this year, from Missy O’Daniel fishtail to a classic braid, so it’s time to start practicing your techniques, ladies! Beauty Expert    Toning down the makeup is also on trend. Understate your makeup with a dewy glow on the face with a bold lip and a strong brow. Keep your nails simple as well with nude shades, short and perfectly manicured. The clothes had soft color palettes, a nude or white, with a pop of color. There was also a variety of black and white floral prints, strips, checker board, polka dots, mixing multiple patterns and textures to enhance the fit and create an interesting look. Hold off on the minis, maxis are in. Dresses and skirts will be long and flowing with high slits giving a sexy yet whimsical look. Since we are in the full swing of fall, here is a recap of the trends from NYFW fall/winter 2014.    The hair looks on the runway for fall 2014 were deconstructed giving an undone effect, strength underneath and moveable on top. Ponytails once again give that sleek finished glam look for daytime or evening attire and braids are big, adding unique texture. Eyelid color pops with vibrant blues and greens with an added shimmer, along with black liner creates a bold statement. Make a bold statement with your lips as well with lip color stains in various berry colors. Thinking about getting your nails done? Gunmetal nail polish and nail art with a holographic effect is right on trend for fall. Colors of the season for fall/winter 2014 are bright and bold reds and pinks, with pops of color on black or grey tones. The trend in fabrics are chunky knits, metallics, and playing with mixed textures of fur on leather or suede, and folksy craftwork in vibrant hues with delicate crochet details and stunning beading give a free-spirt theme.    You don’t have to be a celebrity or socialite to attend all fashion weeks. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Dr. Terry Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S

Breast Cancer Facts: • Aside from Skin Cancer, Breast Cancer is now the most prevalent Cancer affecting Women in America. Nearly one in eight women will be affected in their lifetime. • There are many types of Breast Cancer depending on which cell type in the breast degenerates into a cancerous form. For instance Lobular Breast Cancer comes from lobular cells that produce milk, while intraductal Breast Cancer arises from the ductal cells that carry the milk to the nipple. • The earliest signs of Breast Cancer are found as ‘micro-calcifications’ on a mammogram, stressing the importance of routine screening. A small non-painful breast lump detected by the patient or physician can help find Breast Cancer in its earliest stages. Procrastination in obtaining mammograms or reluctance in doing self- exams can worsen the prognosis if a cancer is found at more advanced stages.

Treatment: • The treatment varies depending on the size, type, and spread of the tumor at the time of its diagnosis. If surgery is an option, treatment ranges from removal of the mass, to removing a quadrant of the breast, to complete breast removal (mastectomy) or removal of both breasts. • To treat the remaining breast tissue, if it is not removed surgically, Radiation Therapy is frequently recommended. Chemotherapy is indicated if there is evidence of spread of the cancer to lymph nodes or organs.

Options: • October 15th is National BRA Day (Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day) to make women aware that there are surgeries available to reconstruct the breast mound after lumpectomy and mastectomy. You realize the hard part must be over and you now can entrust one of the largest financial decisions of your life in their hands and expertise. Basically, we can sit back, pick out your dream home and wait for the loan to close, right? Well, not exactly… We sought out our resident real estate guru, Debi Ambroff, to give us her guidance and knowledge on how to go about having a smooth loan process. According to Ambroff, getting a home loan these days is a very interactive process. "I am always amazed by how many clients I work with who come to me completely unaware of all the pitfalls they can face during the loan process" She said. Bullying PREVENTION CENTER BY KELSEY WEHSELS

High school and the teenage years are supposed to be fun and exciting, filled with school dances, football games and the exhilarating anticipation of the future ahead. But not everyone has those pleasant experiences. Nearly 1 in 3 (27.8%) of students are bullied during the school year, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. Bullying has become not only a social issue, but a health issue as well. According to the Center for Disease Control, “students who experience bullying are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and poor school adjustment.” PACER, an organization originally dedicated to providing resources to parents with disabled children, started the National Bullying Prevention Center in 2006. The center was started because students with disabilities are bullied 2-3 times more than their non-disabled peers. However, the center caters to all students.    Originally designed to have a week-long event for the first week in October, the program evolved into a month-long effort to bring awareness and educate communities about the negative effects of bullying because there was increased

interest from teachers to participate in more activities. The National Bullying and Prevention Center partnered with Disney, ABC Family and Facebook last year to spread awareness and distribute resources, and will be working with the NBPC in similar capacities this year. The center has started a new program called the We Will Generation, a student-led movement that seeks to empower students to address bullying in their schools and communities. Since more than half of bullying situations (57%) end when a peer intervenes, PACER is appealing to students to get involved with the anti-bullying movement. Beyond the curriculum, the WE WILL Generation includes stand-alone activities and a social media campaign (posting photos of their commitments with #WeWillGen).   One day highlighted throughout the month is UNITY day, October 22, where

schools, communities, and online participants come together to spread awareness. There are a variety of ways people can participate in Unity Day. First, everyone is being encouraged to wear orange, from T-shirts, ties to socks and sneakers. Parents are educators are encouraged to create orange banners, titled “Unite Against Bullying,” for children at schools to sign. People can also participate in UNITY Day online by using #UnityDay2014 on social media, and also join and share the Unity Day Facebook event. In the last two years, over 12,000 people joined and participated in the Facebook event.   “Teachers and parents can play a critical role in creating a climate where bullying is not tolerated,” said Paul F. Goldberg, Executive Director of PACER. “When adults and children stand together, bullying ends.”

PAINTED STUDIOS

One of the most unique boutiques in the area is Painted Studios, located at the Palladio in Folsom. Established in February 2013, Painted is a studio that offers day and evening classes, private parties, birthday parties, children’s parties, fundraisers and team building events. Owner, Jenn Sharp, created art at a young age and developed a passion for it. Originally from Montana, Sharp went to school at Montana State University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing. After that, continued her schooling and pursued a degree in Allied Health Sciences. “Throughout my professional career (I previously sold surgical devices), I continued to create art and decided that I really wanted to do something that I loved to do on a daily basis,” she explained. Painted is different from other paint and sip studios because they offer classes for custom paintings and “paintings by request” meaning if there is something a client has in mind, the studio will try to accommodate it into a class. They are also open during regular business hours so customers unable to make a class can attend Open Paint, where people can free paint.   When clients attend a class, they can expect a simple, brief introduction to the painting and a quick walk-through of the brushes. It might seem odd to have a car wash and a boutique under the same roof, but Suds Carwash and Cadence Corner make it work. When owners Ashley and Jeff Lowe wanted to purchase the property, the store was part of the deal. “When we purchased the Suds land, prior to building the car wash, the plans were part of the sale, so there wasn’t room for adjustment there,” said Ashley. "All I really had was a retail background but my initial thought was ‘who in their right mind is going to buy clothes at a car wash, what a ridiculous idea,’” she added. Because there was confusion and resistance from vendors, the Lowes were forced to change the name.

For Lisa Wolf, owner of Burlap and Bees, Folsom is all about history and family. She and her husband both worked in the high tech industry in the Silicon Valley and when their family started to grow (they now have three boys), they knew it was time for a change. “We’ve always loved the darling downtown of Los Gatos and Historic Folsom reminded us of that,” said Wolf.    Wolf never knew she had family ties to Folsom until after she moved here. In fact, her great grandfather owned the service station on the corner of Riley and Sutter, which recently was where her shop was located. “It’s been so much fun to be in a building where my ancestors had been,” she said. A boutique that comes right to your living room might sound too good to be true, but it is a reality. Founded by best friends, Michelle Asnicar and Bonnie Myers, Velvet Hanger is a traveling boutique that visits client’s residences or businesses. “It’s so fun,” said Myers. “I love helping women put outfits together. It’s so gratifying.” Women will usually host parties with several girlfriends when the boutique visits to have a fun shopping night in. The two admit that one of the most difficult aspects to their business is packing up the merchandise and moving around town. Although the two travel, they also set up product at Myer’s residence where customers can stop by during open hours, usually one morning and one evening during the week, and also by private appointment. The business is also online, where they sell a lot of items from their Facebook page, shipping to places such as Wisconsin or Hawaii and has become a successful tool for their business. “When we post, we sell,” explained Asnicar. The business has also made the two women popular in the community. “People are always recognizing us around town,” said Asnicar. “We’ve met so many people and it’s a great way to meet new friends.” 40

Owning a children’s store is a fun business for Kerri Kaye and Karen McConnell, who own Starlight Starbright, located in Historic Folsom. “We get to see babies every day,” McConnell said with a laugh. The two women had a conversation years ago about what they wanted to do and Kerri confessed she wanted to own a children’s store. “The next thing we knew, we were signed up for business classes,” said McConnell. Kristen Salmans, Kerri’s sister, is also an owner at the store. She manages the store virtually from Kansas, where her husband is stationed in the air force. In March 2013, they launched their website, selling items straight out of the store, available to be shipped or picked up at the store. They have shipped all over including places such as Japan, Texas and Florida.   According to McConnell, the most rewarding aspect to owning a children’s store is being able to interact with children. “Anytime you get to talk current events with a three year old, you end up giggling,” she said. “Three year olds are hysterical.” On October 24, the store will be hosting K Walker Photography from 10am-5pm.

Owner, Anita Grey emphasizes that interacting with customers in a playful and humorous manner makes the business fun. Grey decided to go into the handbag business after working for Mary Kay. “I could see the success,” she said. “I recognized salesmanship and I loved it.” For a while, Grey didn’t have a permanent location, mainly working the circuit with purse parties, fairs and events. After two years, she decided on something permanent. “It was an easy decision for me,” she said. “The clients in Folsom were always so supportive.” She feels the biggest reward from the business has been the relationships it has brought her. “I feel like I have a lot of girl friends now,” she said. On top of running the business, Grey is also very active in organizing the event “Helping Handbags,” a charity event hosted by The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Sacramento. Pete and Robin Bernardoni, owners of Button Up, never pictured themselves in the retail management business. “We never thought we would do this,” Robin said with a laugh. “We always thought it would be a hobby, never a career for us.” Robin always had a passion for fashion and after being a stay-at-home mom for 13 years, she decided it was time to go back to work, and jumped into the fashion retail industry. “I didn’t have the experience in retail so everything I know is selftaught,” she explained. It was her family that encouraged her to open her own boutique. Pete worked in venture capital and understood the requirements for start up businesses. The Bernardoni's opened their first boutique, Runway, five years ago in El Dorado Hills.    With the demand for unique clothing growing in the area, the couple opened their first location of Button Up at the Palladio in Folsom in February 2012. “We love the small town feel and the small community,” she said. “We are very active and we want to be part of the community.” And for the Bernardoni family, being part of the community means donating to various charities and causes. They donate and sponsor the event Run for Courage, a charity that helps girls get out of sex trafficking as well as bring awareness to the issue. “It’s one thing we’re all very passionate about,” said Robin. The Bernardonis decided to open a second location for Button Up at The Fountains in Roseville in October 2013. Since the space is larger, the store is about to accommodate more designers and fashion pieces. For Robin, the rewards of her business are plentiful. “It’s so cool to see an item that I picked out at market and then see a customer wearing it out around town,” she said. The boutique features designers such as Michael Stars, Free People, Citizens of Humanity, Ella Moss and many more.    The trending item has consistently been denim, but this season there has been a demand for jumpers and one-piece kimonos, novelty items for this year’s fashion trend. “We also sell a lot of Michael Stars T-shirts,” Robin explained. “We can’t keep them in stock.” In honor of the Roseville location’s one year anniversary, the store will be holding a special event to celebrate on Wednesday, October 22 from 5pm - 8pm. The festivities will feature free giveaways, gift with purchase, special discounts and refreshments.

$73 million for breast cancer research. “Never forget - when mailing the U.S. postal stamp, you not only raise money for the cure but you also send a message of awareness and early detection,” said Dr. Bodai. Another local doctor, Dr. Terry J. Zimmerman, a plastic surgeon for over 24 years, has helped well over 100 women with breast reconstruction surgeries. “Fortunately, improvements are also being made in techniques for breast reconstruction to enable women to feel ‘whole’ about themselves again after losing one or both breasts,” he said. “From a surgeon’s perspective, it is very emotionally rewarding to be able to help these cancer victims feel good about themselves and help restore their confidence again.” The doctor explained that the plastic surgeon is kept very much in the know when a patient is diagnosed and works closely with the general surgeon to come up with a game plan for the patient. There are three surgeries that are performed to reconstruct the breast, involving a permanent chest implant, the patient’s own tissue, or a combination of the two.   Dr. Zimmerman explains that with the prevalence of breast cancer so high, women should be taking precautions and necessary steps to ensure a diagnosis. “Every step towards early diagnosis should be taken, with regular self and medical breast exams and routine mammograms,” he advised. And as one breast cancer survivor learned, early detection is imperative. Juliet Voigtlander, owner of El Dorado Nursery, is vocal about her experience and educating others. “Breast cancer affects everyone,” she said. “It needs to be talked about.” Voigtlander was diagnosed last year after she did a self exam and found her lump. It was an aggressive tumor and was informed treatment had to begin immediately, with a mastectomy (removal of the breasts) and chemotherapy. “I didn’t think I would be this traumatized from losing my breasts,” she said. “It was a decision I didn’t want to make, but I had to.” The most important thing about breast cancer Voigtlander wants people to know is that young women are still at risk and she encourages all women to do regular breast exams and get mammograms. “The largest diagnosis of breast cancer is women in their 20’s,” she explained. “They don’t think they’re at risk.” She described the measures she took, explaining how it important it was to her diagnosis. “I was diligent. I was getting regular mammograms and doing a monthly self exam since I was 35,” she said. “I didn’t find my lump in April, but I found it in May. I was lucky.” To bring awareness and raise money for the cause, Voigtlander and the El Dorado Nursery hold an event, called Sunflower Breast Cancer Awareness Day where they sell sunflowers. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. This year, the event was held on August 24 and they were able to raise $200, and they are now close to $300. “It’s a nice event for people to come together and ask questions,” she explained. “The information on the internet is scary and not human.” In honor of the event, the nursery planted a sunflower wall.    Another local breast cancer survivor shares Voigtlander’s tenacity in spreading awareness and remaining positive. “I don’t pay attention to statistics,” said Charlie Hall, organizer of the Breast Cancer Self-Help group in Placerville. “The way I see it, we’re surviving it now.” Hall was diagnosed at age 41 in 1979. Discontent with her doctor’s handling of her case, she was determined to prevent that from happening again. “Back then everyone assumed you were going to die and they treated you like a leper,” she explained. “I decided no one was going to make me feel like that again.” And that has been Hall’s mission with the support group; to encourage 46

and educate women about their options. And have some fun, of course. The women of the group even gave themselves a name: hooters. “It’s a positive and fun name,” said Hall with a laugh. “No one has ever been offended by it.” The group has been operating for over 20 years and sees an average of 25 to 27 women at each meeting. Hall explains her experience has given her a fighting spirit. “When you get breast cancer, you get an attitude, which is bring it! Our group of ladies are serious and we mean business,” she said. And business, they do. At a recent Relay for Life event, held by the American Cancer Society, the Hooters raised over $10,000. In honor or Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Curves is holding 2 “Pinkathons” featuring a zumbathon and shopathon. The event is complete with seven licensed Zumba instructors as well as over 20 shopping vendors, including Miche bags, Pampered Chef, Premier Designs jewelry and Oragami Owl. To attend, make $20 donation at Curves Folsom, Curves Roseville, Curves Rocklin or Folsom Raley’s on East Bidwell.   The first event will be held in Folsom on Saturday, October 4 at the Folsom Raley’s parking lot (717 E. SMITH DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION COMPANY Formed by the merger of two 30 year old companies, Smith Development and Construction Company is known for their home and yard design that includes both large commercial projects and residential upgrades. These veterans of Sacramento construction have been featured on Yardcore, a backyard makeover TV show on the DIY network. ABOUT THEIR PROJECT:

We’ve had wonderful vacations to most major cities in Canada and after a recent first-time visit to Quebec Province’s Montreal we felt that the country’s second largest city is Canada’s most unique vacation destination. This cosmopolitan metropolis gave us the inimitable feeling we were actually visiting Europe. And keep in mind a vacation to Montreal, rather than Europe, allows two major advantages: you’ll save considerable money on airfares and take many less hours getting there. More specifically, the city genuinely feels quite a bit like Paris exuding that city’s joie de vivre. Everybody speaks French and most signage, newspapers, stage productions and activities are usually in French. Where To Start:

Since Montreal is such a walk-able city and public transportation, especially the underground metro-subway, is so timely and reasonably priced we’d recommend flying in, avoid the expenses of a car rental and parking, and booking a downtown hotel. Our perfectly located four-star Le St. Martin, one of the newest in Montreal, had beautifully decorated rooms, and employees who made us feel very much at home. Additional centrally located hotels fitting most budgets and lodging needs can be found on those before mentioned websites.

Our What to do & See Favorites:

First of all we’d recommend finding a touring company, preferably one that offers the on/off ability, to tour the city giving an overview of all the important attractions. Here is a list of our personal do-not-miss faves: a stop towards the top of Mont Royal Park, Montreal’s most prominent natural site, is the very best place to really see the city below getting a sense of the major city landmarks; a long stroll through the Old Port’s pier area along the St. Lawrence River, then into the Montreal Museum of Archaeology to see the very informative multimedia presentation “Yours Truly Montreal”; follow this stroll by meandering up through yesteryear’s enchanting Old Town and then on to the Gothic Revival masterpiece, Notre Dame Basilica; Montreal may offer one of the most unique shopping experiences in the world. Five shopping centers connected together offering over 1700 shops and restaurants all located underground, like a hidden city-within-the-city. It’s also connected to the Metro and two of Montreal’s best known department stores, The Bay Company and Simons, located on Montreal’s main outdoor shopping street, Saint Catherine. No matter what negative weather Mother Nature might have in mind this subterranean aspect is a shopper’s paradise; visits to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Contemporary Art Museum should be nobrainers for all art lovers. 62

Montreal is home to numerous highly regarded annual events and scheduling your visit during one or more would be ideal. Fortunately we scheduled our trip when three major festivals were taking place and we enjoyed a little of each. We called it our “winning trifecta of festivals”. Montreal’s International Jazz Festival, the world’s largest, taking place in the vibrant Quartier des Spectacles, considered Montreal’s cultural heart, didn’t disappoint; the annual somewhat off-the-wall ST. Cirque Festival presented both indoor and outdoor performances by over one hundred international circus performers showcasing amazing talent. Montreal is also headquarters for the famous Cirque du Soleil and other circus companies plus a few circus schools. Luckily we were able to attend Soleil’s newest show, KURIOS, soon to go on the road around Canada and then to San Francisco in November. We’ve viewed over ten different Soleil shows in Las Vegas and San Francisco and Kurios had acts that bring dangerous edge-ofyour-seat thrills to an all new level. When the show comes to San Francisco and you have the opportunity, do not miss seeing this amazing performance. Third in our trio of events was Montreal’s International Fireworks Competition staged between countries annually at La Ronde overlooking a reflective water pond in coordination with resounding musical accompaniment. Creative pyro-technicians vie for awards at the most prestigious event of its kind in the fireworks’ cosmos. We witnessed an unbelievable, almost overwhelming, high octane thirty minutes of dazzling pyrotechnic firepower by Italy’s team, last year’s winner. Other major events that may interest our readers include the annual Formula One race and the city’s annual universally acclaimed comedy, music and film festivals.

There are restaurants in Montreal serving every ethnic cuisine imaginable but we suggest you stick with French and continental offerings for more complete culinary memories from our Europe-of-the-Americas. Why not try dining at as many charming sidewalk cafes as possible in Old Montreal and most anywhere in town. Our hotel’s Bistro L’Aromate served scrumptious breakfasts and their sidewalk seating area was delightful for any meal. Hold tightly to those credit cards, ladies, as you walk through their enticing glittering temptations. In addition to experiencing European influenced gastronomic outings we had considerable amusement trying some specialty foods Montreal claims as their own. We started at Reuben’s Deli, a storied institution that features Montreal-style smoked beef and another Montreal specialty, poutine. Our verdict: the lightly smoked beef sandwich was heavenly and Reuben’s creative version of poutine with their smoked beef added to the standard recipe of French fries covered in gravy and cheese curd was a yummy taste treat. Another fun foodie challenge occurred when we read Montreal folks consider their bagels the best in the universe and especially better than New York’s. As longtime New York bagel devotees we tried the city’s two top bagel award winners: Fairmount and St. Viateur. Our verdicts: we thought both were equally good and sweeter than New York’s but only one of us thought they were better than the Big Apple’s. Sorry Montreal, but a tie is still better than a loss. The concept of “global tapas” expands traditional Spanish tapas-style, or small plates, dining with a menu that reaches beyond the realm of Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. Source’s menu can best be described as the best ingredients from the best sources presented on shared plates using flavors and techniques from around the world. Source is irrefutably been one of the innovators of the culinary movement, christened the “Slow Food Movement,” in which chefs and home cooks alike seek sustainable, locally-produced products whenever possible. One of the things that makes Source a success is the techniques, the precision and the great flavors as constants everywhere on the menu.   Chicago native Irie Gengler, the chef/owner has an impressive résumé for someone who didn’t mean to cook for a living, despite growing up in a family of foodies, as Chef Irie refers to his parents. An Accounting degree graduate of Ball State in Indiana, Irie was on a pro windsurfing tour in Hawaii where he started to “get into cooking.” It was there, he began his career with Roy Yamagucci of the renowned Roy’s Restaurants. He cooked at the infamous Roy’s Restaurants on the island of Maui before returning to his hometown of Chicago. There, he connected with world famous chef Wolfgang Puck to open Spago-Chicago. He spent several years in Chicago and then returned to the tropics, where he settled at Manele Bay on the island of Lanai. Irie wanted to expand his knowledge of wines while also maintaining his pursuit to discover the freshest ingredients the world had to offer, so he submersed himself in Napa Valley, the heart of the California wine country. He spent time in the kitchen at Brix in Napa Valley and then as the Executive Chef at the Firehouse in Old Sacramento. Chef Irie emphasizes the use of the freshest ingredients with inflections of many world 68

influences from his travels. While there are over 30 different tapas choices on the menu, such as traditional Spanish taps, in many of the dishes, you will find hints of Pacific Rim flavors resulting from Irie’s time in the islands.   Chef Irie describes Source as “A neighborhood restaurant that offers a fun dining experience rather than the traditional fine dining white table cloth experience.” “We are family friendly,” he adds while explaining that the concept of Source was cultivated from his and his wife’s passion for hopping around different restaurants to share 3-4 appetizers. A concept that has now been coined as the “social dining experience”- going out to eat with a date, or some friends, enjoy sampling several different menu items, talk about the food, the service, the chef’s vision, the ambiance, the wine list, etc. While Source definitely compliments the social dining experience with its menu, it’s the service that also gives diners something to talk

about. The servers are connected to the kitchen and very zealous about the food. They’re knowledgeable, detailed, and eager to give suggestions. They contend that the best way to experience Source is to try two or three different small plates at a time, to get the most of the tastes and flavors the restaurant has to offer. (Yes, the same goes for dessert.)   The wine and beer menu is just as varied as the food menu. There is a large wine list representing local, regional and international labels that provide plentiful options for pairings with the food, making for a complete and total dining encounter. DAVID GIRARD Winery BY MICHELLE FINDERS

As a boy growing up on the outskirts of Detroit, David Girard thought more about hockey, snow, and auto plants than vines and grapes. But after working in his father’s gas station through high school and college, a stint as an Army enlistee, a Ford manager and accountant, and armed with an MBA from Wayne State University and a law degree from the University of Michigan, a California perspective seemed like a good idea. With wife and daughter Rachael in tow, David moved to Berkeley where he earned his Ph.D. After practicing law briefly, he moved to Europe for a year where he studied and traveled. Upon his return, David accepted a position as a professor at U.C. Santa Barbara in the Graduate School of Education where he taught educational finance and law. After three years, David returned to Berkeley where his second daughter, Yvette was born. He taught for some six years at U.C. Berkeley before returning to the practice of law, primarily representing schools and colleges. This is the work that brought David to the Sierra Foothills. Today he continues to practice law, yet feels the tug of the vineyard grow stronger with each passing year. David Girard Vineyard’s 85 acres of El Dorado County property includes forty acres of fruit-bearing vines growing in Auberry sandy loam soil, atop weathered granite bedrock. Merlot was first planted in 1998, followed by the 2001 plantings of Syrah, Mourvédre, Grenache, Viognier, and Counoise. In 2002 David also incorporated Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Rolle to the vineyard, and blends these emerging varieties into traditional Rhône style wines. The topography of the David Girard estate mirrors that of the French Rhône Valley for optimal grape harvest of Rhône style wines. The French Rhône Valley is situated in the Rhône river valley in Southern France, with the river flowing in a southerly direction from Lake Geneva (Switzerland) to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhône vineyards have hot to warm days that is easily cooled at night by the river air. Similarly, David Girard Vineyards in located 1.1 miles from the South Fork of the American River. The California heat warms the grapes during the day while the waters of the river allow the air to cool at night. Ideal conditions for this Berkeley grad to produce amazing, well balanced Rhône style wines. Some of the awards David Girard Vineyards has been so graciously be adorned with include recognition from the coveted San Francisco Chronicle highlighting the 2010 Rive D’ore and the 2011 Viognier Roussanne both taking gold in 2013. 70

The 2010 Coda Blanc also received gold by the Tasters Guild International Wine Judging Competition in 2012. Also in 2012, the 2010 Syrah won Best in Class by the Sunset International Wine Competition, Best in Class for the 2009 Rive d’Or, and Double Gold for the 2010 Triptych at the California State Fair. Not to mention the 2010 Grenache was selected as a West Coast treasure by Williams Sonoma. Weibel Family Vineyards and Winery boasts a history of over eight decades of producing wine across California, with ties to Lodi, San Francisco, Stanford and more. Along with other influential wine families, the Weibels are often credited with revitalizing the California wine industry after Prohibition. The Weibel Family Vineyards and Winery offers vintages ranging from Chardonnay to Zinfandel, specializing in flavorful California champagnes. Weibel sources their grapes from both Lodi and Mendocino Counties, with a lush tasting room 72

experience in the heart of Lodi. The Weibel Family Vineyards always honor their central value of “wines for everyone on any day”. Originating in Switzerland, the Weibel family immigrated to San Francisco and produced wine out of the William Tell Hotel with success in the 1930s. The family continued to move, buying land near Mission San Jose, acreage once owned by Governor Stanford. Yes, that Stanford. Meanwhile, the Weibels brought new life to the abandoned Stanford vineyards and produced vintages for over fifty years before moving yet again to Woodbridge just outside of Lodi.

The Weibel family owns over five hundred acres of vineyards in Mendocino County and the Lodi region. The variation of the land allows the family to produce a wide variety of wines, including their famed Green Hungarian (GH), a zippy white wine that just ‘clicked’ with wine lovers in the 1960s when they produced over 80,000 cases a year. Although this variety is no longer produced, GH lives on in spirit. Also extremely popular and refreshing in the spring and summer months is their variety of naturally flavored sparkling wines. As an avid lover of all things pumpkin, it’s easy to scoff at those who deem the pumpkin less than wonderful for any occasion. For those readers thinking that pumpkins just aren’t for them, it’s time to highlight the amazing health benefits of this autumn fruit. Yes, pumpkins are fruit much like watermelons and cucumbers. Pumpkin is one of the only fruits that have minimal calories in comparison to high vitamin content. From the amazing carotenes that support eyesight and help improve and sustain 74

1 cup pumpkin puree 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon salt 4 cups vegetable oil for frying DIRECTIONS

In a medium bowl, combine pumpkin, egg, flour, baking powder, curry powder, and salt. Mix until smooth. Heat oil in a deep saucepan to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). INGREDIENTS

Oil or butter for greasing the pan • 1¼ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup whole-wheat flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon • ½ teaspoon ground ginger Pinch ground nutmeg • Pinch ground allspice 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 cup pumpkin purée 1 cup brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 cup pumpkin ale PREPARATION 1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch loaf pan. Combine the flours, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice in a large bowl. 2. Melt the but-

ter in a medium saucepan over low heat (or in a medium bowl in the microwave). Remove from the heat. Stir in the pumpkin and brown sugar, then stir in the eggs. Finally, stir in the pumpkin ale. Add the pumpkin mixture to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined, then transfer the batter to the greased pan. 3. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool thoroughly, then slice and serve. (Leftover pumpkin bread can be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap and stored at room temperature for up to a few days.)
