“While visiting my friends living in Egypt, there was a moment where we were drinking hibiscus tea and Turkish coffee sailing down the Nile that my passion for the tea culture was born.” Part owner and daughter in the Planje family, Hannah Planje explains unforgettable memories traveling the world and falling in love with different kinds of tea. “I was actually in Japan for a layover and I saw this beautiful Oolong tea at the airport. I bought it for my mom as a gift and she absolutely loved it.” The Planje family originally started in the coffee business, owning El Dorado Roasting, which is now Westwind Coffee Roasters. While owning the coffee shop, they would often do a lot of trial and error experiments with tea. “We honestly kind of fell into it,” explains Planje. In 2010 the Planje family began their journey learning from the importers themselves. Experiences like cupping tea with the Taiwan ambassador and staying on a fifth generation tea garden in India vastly contributed to their extensive knowledge of the industry. From learning about basic tea facts, healthy benefits, visiting importers all over the world, how to make it and how it’s processed; the Planje’s really immersed themselves in the process. Having recently gone to India, they lived, breathed and dreamt tea from seed to cup. “It’s important to know your product, from planting it all the way to drinking it.” At Tea Xotics, all of the teas are fair or direct trade and completely organic. This is important as the Planje’s directly communicate and import from the families and growers of their products. The European company they use for flavors tests for over two hundred pesticides. All of 16

the tea is completely free of artificial flavoring and chemicals. “We worked really hard with our importers to know exactly what was in the teas before buying. Now we have unique tea beverages that are focused on natural ingredients.” The Planje’s biggest goal when opening Tea Xotics in July of 2016 was health. “99% of what we have is healthy. Sometimes a little bit of sugar is okay,” chuckles Renee, mother of the Planje family. “We have a lot of doctors and health specialists that approve of our stuff. We have 18
month-olds to seniors drinking our products.” They wanted to break away from the big corporations and not just bring a healthy beverage to the community, but a lifestyle. “We want to empower our communities locally and globally.” With a bi-monthly tea and wellness box as well as classes ran by owner Renee Planje and health coach Martha McGoldrick coming in during the New Year, they want to share their passion for this lifestyle with the community. The box this month is called “The Cure,” which includes ginger turmeric, crystalized ginger, tea filters and a detox with all kinds of tips to stay healthy during the winter months. Tea Xotics in El Dorado Hills is excited to welcome the community and share it’s many products also including all natural olive oils, vinegars, bath products, candles, soaps and lotions. “We are always looking for a healthy alternative to share with our customers.” Tea has been an essential part of communities around the world for thousands of years. Shriner’s FOR THE BYRDS BY MATT KRAMER
When their daughter suffered severe burns in an accident at the age of 6, Eric and Melinda Byrd weren’t sure where to turn. That was when they were introduced to Shriner’s Hospitals For Children through specialists at UC Davis. The doctors serving at Shriner’s Hospitals, a tax exempt organization, trace their roots back to 1922 when their first hospital was opened, named for the fraternal organization whose
members can be identified by their red fezzes. The Norther California Hospital has been in operation in Sacramento since 1997. The Byrds were deeply impressed by the treatment they received, and said it was all free of charge. “Everything’s on the house, no charge whatsoever,” Eric Byrd said. “They do it for free. A lot of people don’t even know this. If you’re from out of this area, they’ll even put you up….and your family can stay there for free.”
Today, the Byrds are getting ready to host their 2nd annual official fundraising dinner at their home in Serrano, El Dorado Hills. After the success and hospitality of the Shriner’s Hospital, the Byrds decided they wanted to give back. Last year, the couple raised approximately $1,500 to give to the hospital; an amount Eric said isn’t much but its a way he said his family can help show their appreciation for the new lease on life Shriner’s gave his daughter. Today, the Byrd’s daughter is perfectly recovered thanks to the care received at the hospital. In addition to raising what he hopes will be another several thousand dollars, Eric said he is hoping to raise awareness of what Shriner’s does and the fact that they offer these services to the most in need members of society. After starting out with small family gatherings and passing around a bucket for donations afterwards, this year at the 2nd annual formal fundraising event in Serrano, the Byrds hope to have around 75 to 100 people attending and pitching in to help Shriner’s realize its mission. Named Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News for Orthopedics and Urology for 2016-2017, it would seem Shriners Hospitals for Children is continuing its mission to provide for the needs of every child that walks through their doors and to support their families as best as they can; all while providing lasting care. In addition, the hospitals conduct research to improve treatments and services for burn victims, and children with other severe medical needs, not based on the patient’s ability to provide payment. The Shriner’s website says they are “committed
to building and rebuilding the promise of every child’s life.” So far it looks like that mission is a success, both for the Byrds and Shriners. MORE INFORMATION ON SHRINER’S AT: shrinershospitalsforchildren.org

ECONOMIC GROWTH
Economic growth will be the theme of the housing market in 2017, according to the forecast from Frank Nothaft, CoreLogic Senior Vice President and Chief economist. And he’s not alone in these predictions as other economists say this is in store for next year. Nothaft predicted that the economy will see growth between 2% and 2.25% in 2017 with increases in five specific areas. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2017

LOL lavish on locals 1. INCREASE IN MORTGAGE RATES Interest rates will average just over 4% next year, about 0.5% higher than in 2016. Many expect the Federal Reserve to raise the federal funds target several times in 2017. This increase could affect the cost of loans tied to short-term rates, such as home equity lines of credit.
2. VACANCY RATES REMAIN LOW Vacancy rates will remain low in the rental market and even decrease in the housing market, according to CoreLogic. The low level of new homes built will keep for-sale inventories down in many markets.
3. HOME APPRECIATION WILL CONTINUE While home prices will continue to increase, Nothaft stated that it could continue at a slower pace. In 2017, expect to see an increase of about 5% in home prices, however some neighborhoods could even see double-digit growth while others may decline. Rent price growth is also projected to moderate at 3% in 2017.

CoreLogic’s Housing Credit Index shows that new single-family originations during the first half of 2016 show lower risk attributes than those made 15 years ago. however, credit risks still look favorable. The National Association of Home Builders and Wells Fargo also shared similar information regarding the New Year. They noted that home builder’s saw a significant boost in confidence after President-elect Donald Trump won the recent election. This increase brought builder sentiment up seven points to a level of 70, the index’s highest point since July 2005. Just before
the election, builder confidence held steady, holding the HMI level at 63. “This notable rise in builder sentiment is largely attributable to a post-election bounce, as builders are hopeful that President-elect Trump will follow through on his pledge to cut burdensome regulations that are harming small businesses and housing affordability,” notes NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder and developer. “This is particularly important, given that a recent NAHB study shows that regulatory costs for home building have increased 29% in the past five years.” Perhaps this is just the increase the industry needs to boost new home development for first-time buyers, something that First American Chief Economist Mark Fleming said will be a key player in 2017’s housing market. “Though this significant increase in builder confidence could be considered
an outlier, the fact remains that the economic fundamentals continue to look good for housing,” said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz. “The rise in the HMI is consistent with recent gains for the stock market and consumer confidence,” Dietz said. “At the same time, builders remain sensitive to rising mortgage rates and continue to deal with shortages of lots and labor.” Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been conducting for 30 years, the index gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations for the next six months as good, fair or poor. The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective
buyers as high to very high, average or low to very low. Scores for each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good rather than poor. All three components of the HMI increased in December. The component gauging current sales conditions increased seven points to 76, while the index measuring sales expectations in the next six months increased nine points to 78. The component measuring buyer traffic increased six points to 53, the first time it moved above 50 since October 2005, making many hopeful for the changes coming in the New Year.

My rule of thumb for everything in life: throw a moto jacket on it. If you don’t own one, it’s time you go get one. This might make a dent in your pocket at first but choosing the right piece is essential as you’ll probably keep it around for years if you’re anything like me. First things first, seek out a jacket made by a good brand. Some of my favorite brands: Bernardo, ASTR, BLANKNYC, Top Shop, Michael Kors and Free People. This doesn’t have to be real leather or suede, but make sure it’s well-made. Yes, vegan and pleather are two separate entities. And once you have a nice moto jacket, you can wear some pretty comfortable clothes underneath.

What got you started in this field? I first got interested in the field of plastic surgery in medical school. I always thought I wanted to become an orthopedic surgeon when I was younger, but the surgery was just not as exact and precise as I anticipated. Then I met an older plastic surgeon starting up a residency program at USC where I was training and he became my inspiration and mentor.
What do you love most about what you do? It’s extremely rewarding seeing the difference and transformation we can make in someone’s life. Whether it is performing reconstruction after an injury or cancer, or changing something in one’s appearance that has always bothered them.
Is there one thing you’ve learned from cosmetic procedures that you’d like to share?
I believe one of the keys to being a successful plastic surgeon is always being honest with my patients. I want my patients to have a good understanding of what they are about to undertake, as well as a realistic expectation as to the outcome.
Why are cosmetic procedures helpful and important? Cosmetic surgery has the ability to restore confidence and change certain aspects of our appearance that we are not comfortable with. Choosing a Board certified Plastic Surgeon is essential to ensure the best possible outcome will be obtained. A patient must first do their homework to ensure their surgeon is trained and skilled in the procedure being considered and avoid those attempting cosmetic surgery but trained in other specialties.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? If I could have dinner with anyone currently living, I would like it to be with my family. We get too busy in our lives and the children get scattered across the country, so I would enjoy a dinner with us all together. If the question was expanded to those no longer living, I would love to have dinner with my parents again. I never got the chance to properly say goodbye.
Do you have any hobbies or things you absolutely love to do outside of working in the office?
Over the last few years I have been trying to improve my ability to hit small little white balls with clubs and get them into tiny holes. When not working on my golf game or riding my bicycle, I enjoy animals and spend time with my dogs, horses and tortoises.
Who is your favorite entertainer/musician/band?
My taste of music is still trapped in the 70’s. I like bands like Buffalo Springfield, America, Crosby Stills Nash & Young.
What’s your favorite place you’ve been?

The one activity in the area we always like to rave about is the bike ride on the beach trail that starts within one block of each hotel and goes for 27 miles north to Santa Monica and rarely enters public streets. What a glorious way to start an early morning! And both properties offer loaner bikes: Portofino’s cruiser bikes are complimentary and the Crowne charges
a reasonable fee. For anyone into surfing, it was interesting to learn that the sport was introduced to our mainland right on the Redondo beaches! A visit to the Redondo Beach Historical Museum offers interesting memorabilia and info on the early surfing era and admission is complimentary. Most water and boating activity rentals are available just steps away including kayaking, paddle boarding, whale watching and fishing to name a few. Both hotels can arrange most activities for you.

The Farm-to-Fork movement in Sacramento has produced a number of delightful culinary results over the past decade, but one standout establishment that has honed the art of service, aesthetics, and flavor to a tee is Grange. Opened in 2008, Grange Restaurant & Bar at 926 J Street in Sacramento recently revealed a new renovation and redesign; but the redesign is not a change in course, according to Lauren Johnsen, Grange General Manager. SIP & Savor Rather this represents the next stage of evolution for a restaurant that knows how to build on something great. “At the end of the day, we’re still Grange,” Johnsen said. “We want people to come in and say, ‘Hey this is one of the top restaurants in Sacramento. We know it’s going to provide us with something seasonal, with something local – something that really celebrates the community.’’ We don’t want to get away from that at all, but we want to show that we are also adapting to new things happening in our environment.” The adaptation, Johnsen said, is more of an expansion than a redesign. At the vanguard of the Farm-to-Fork movement, adopting local shopping habits, Grange’s chefs purchase fresh produce and provisions directly from local farmer’s markets in the summer time, and directly from
local cultivators and farmers year round. Adopting a seasonal menu, Grange is building on a model that’s proven to work, be it from field to plate or from grove to glass. Chef Oliver Ridgeway maintains a handle on the kitchen where these delightful seasonal flavors are crafted. Flavors change throughout the season, reflecting Ridgeway’s selection of ingredients. Johnsen said that the restaurant refuses to compromise this model, bringing food to the table that is in season, and this, she said, enhances the dining experience. The local and seasonal model is integral to Grange’s modus operandi, “Locally grown, Grange crafted.” “That is who we are,” Johnsen said. “(It’s) everything that we do.” Chef Oliver Ridgeway’s menu items now feature an entirely new menu reflective of the winter and holiday seasons. On the menu are the delightful dishes Chestnut and Celery Soup with black truffle, sourdough and chervil; Chicory Salad with mezzo secco, crouton hen egg and lemon anchovy vinaigrette; Passmore Ranch Sturgeon with saurkraut, duck fat potatoes and poultry jus; Beelers Pork Chop with chestnut spaetzle, pumpkin and quince mustard and much more. Options for lovers of all culinary delights abound. Johnsen said that with the opening of the Golden 1 Arena, changing demands and new palette demographics have been discovering Grange. Citing an increased demand for more of a bar crowd and more bar seating, Grange expanded their bar seating to incorporate a lounge space and additional second-level dining options. The expanded bar features more beer including eight rotating tap handles from local breweries. Recognized local favorites include Track 7, Monk’s Cellar and Bike Dog. The cocktails rotate seasonally as well, in a Farm-to-Glass style. In expansion with this the draft cocktail list will grow, and according to Johnsen Grange will soon have draft cocktails on tap, created by the bar tenders in house, serving to the seasons. According to Johnsen, now is the perfect time to check out these seasonal flavors. “Right now you’ve got these really good Winter flavors coming in,” Johnsen said. “They’ve made it to our cocktail list as well.” MORE INFORMATION ON GRANGE CAN BE FOUND AT

If you read my monthly article you’re no stranger to my fervor for small businesses and really getting out there to support your community. Yet, I sit here on Black Friday back in the office of one of the small businesses I am lucky to be a part of and I am just befuddled by the sheer magnitude of this day and the blindly poor consumerism that surrounds us. I live in El Dorado Hills. I consider myself luckier than most to be happy, healthy and surrounded by a very engaging and loving community. Though I believe we, as well as other small communities, could be on the precipice of losing out on something special, simply because we weren’t paying attention to detail. In a single day, on a single trip to the store for a bunch of radishes, I have had to dodge shopping carts, cars, pedestrians, children and more intoxicated shopaholics than I care to ever encounter in an entire year. People blindly spending and springing from big box stores, to discount stores, to electronics stores, to toy stores, and I kid you not, I saw a group of ladies on short wave radios with their friends from store to store seeking out the cheapest stuff they could find. Drive thrus, burrito stores, In and Out and the line for a Costco hotdog BURSTING at the seams… All while the local small places are scrimping and saving, cutting labor, managing specials and hoping to see black on the bottom line at the end of the year while people are in a blind panic to find as many two for ones while they search for a 60” TV. The small places, not the chains, are what make a demographic into a community. The small shops that line quiet streets, the deli where the owner is slicing meats, the boutique where the proprietor is helping you find the perfect top, the shoe store where a partner is helping you find your size, the bistro where an owner is simmering sauces and delivering food. While these places may not be able to fully compete cent for cent or dollar for dollar with the Costcos, Targets, Chipotles or Best Buys of the world, they are bursting at the seams

with a quality that you cannot quite put your finger on. It settles somewhere between pride, anxiety and love. Our reputations, our livelihoods, our families, friends and our community are depending upon us, the little guys, to fight hard, be scrappy and bring it every single day. We have so many special places up here from the locally owned and operated Radiant Yoga, The Talisman Collection, Prohibition Wine Lounge, Ruffhaus Hot Dogs, Mraz Brewing, Hop House, Face in a Book, Milestone,
Gold Country Run and Sport, 36 handles, Bamiyan Afghan Restaurant, Aji Bistro etc. etc.… The list of small businesses owned and operated by our neighbors, friends and family is longer than any article could ever list. My hat is always off and my respect consistently goes to anyone willing to risk it all to open up their services to the general public. I thank them for the massive risk they take daily because, frankly, our special slice of the hills, my
neighborhood, would quite plainly suck and cease to thrive as a community and become a numbered, corner big store anchor, demographic without the soul, love and service that these little places bring to our area. As the New Year comes around and all of us small business owners take stock of the past year while trying like hell to figure out how we are going to survive and grow into the next; I urge everyone to commit
and be resolved to use and support the shopkeepers in our neighborhood. While nobody subscribes to the basic laws of economics quite like I do, I have to say that I am willing to spend a little more dough, a little more time and a little more love in the small shops that make up the community where I live. Arugula, often also referred to as “rocket,” is a salad green that truly stands out amongst other greens with its unique peppery tang. A cousin of kale and member of the brassicaceae family, arugula provides a delightful flavor whether it is served raw, cooked, sautéed, or steamed. It is often a key ingredient in salads, but also goes great with pizzas and burgers and can be added to smoothies and pesto dishes. And if its versatile uses weren’t enough reason to add it to the grocery list, this leafy green also offers many nutritional benefits. Arugula is packed with Vitamins A, C and 60

K and is an excellent source of folate, calcium, and magnesium. It also provides substantial amounts of phytonutrients, which helps plants stay healthy by fighting off germs, harmful UV lights, insects and other external threats. When consumed by humans, phytonutrients then aid the body by assisting detoxification and immune systems. The leaf is in its prime in colder climates and when it is harvested young, so now is a good time to enjoy this leafy green. Seeds, Mint, and Feta • ¼ C red wine vinegar ½ C olive oil • ¼ C crumbled feta Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 Fuyu persimmons • ¼ C pomegranate seeds 4 C baby arugula • 1 ½ T finely chopped fresh mint leaves
DIRECTIONS:
1. Whisk red wine vinegar and olive oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper and whisk again. 2. Trim persimmon tops and ends, and peel skin using a vegetable peeler. Halve and cut persimmons into thin slices. 3. Place persimmons in a large bowl along with pomegranate seeds, arugula, mint, and feta. Viaggio’s name is Italian for “journey,” but luckily for Sacramento area wine lovers, the journey to Viaggio Estate & Winery isn’t far. Located near Lodi in the beautiful wine rich agricultural town of Acampo, Viaggio offers a high-end yet accessible tasting experience at their Vino di Vita (Wine of Life) tasting room, which is open week round. The passion for delectable wine that forms Viaggio’s vision finishes on the palette, but it begins with Larry and Teri Lawrence. Full owners of the estate and winery since 2012, both have a strong foundation in agriculture. Larry, who also works in real estate, was the one-time President of the Sacramento County Farm Bureau, and now serves not only as President, but also CEO of Viaggio. Teri for her part, originally from Louisiana, now utilizes her background in chemistry and microbiology to craft the estate’s wines to absolute perfection for the senses. The lush vineyard has a wide range of red wines, white wines, sparkling and dessert wines and even olive oils available to the discerning customer. Sangiovese, Malbec, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pino Grigio and Torrontes all make their appearance on the menu. And for dessert? A chocolate based wine named “Sip of Heaven” that lives up to its name. In addition to the actual location, situated amongst walnut groves and ideal scenic beauty, Viaggio offers a wine club, which includes free wine tastings for members (plus one guest for each visit), and a healthy 15 percent discount on all wines and a 20 percent discount on cased wines, including mixed cases. Is Social Media Breaking Relationships? BY ANONYMOUS
Although a good majority of my life is based completely around social media due to my work interests, I can’t help but notice how the internet has impacted our social lives and especially, our love lives. This is a tricky concept for me seeing how I feel like a hypocrite loving and hating social media simultaneously. However, being a part of the cyber world for work purposes entices me to be an observer, learner and defier of this life-altering trend. Remember when you could view your friend’s top Snap Chat senders and receivers? When the privilege was taken away, people went ballistic on other sites such as Twitter, wreaking havoc that they would no longer be able to see who their significant other was chatting with most of the day. You know that Instagram page where you can see all of the likes, comments and actions of those profiles your following? Don’t even get my started on tagged or 66

mapped photos, which often cause us to question where our friends, acquaintances and partners have been. And the most detrimental of all, Facebook. It was two years ago when my now, ex-boyfriend decided to come and go in and out of my life as he pleased that a friend taught me how to really get the inside scoop using Facebook. I was shocked at the amount of information we have access to on such a popular platform. The endless amount of secrets, dramas, lies, truths, mistakes and misunderstandings that are constantly at the reach of our fingertips is taking a toll on the real world. I sometimes see small things on social media that I wish I never noticed, that made me upset, that caused me to question situations I otherwise wouldn’t have; are we really meant to know so much information about other people? Let alone, a much bigger and much scarier question, what aren’t we noticing in our real lives
that stems us to resort to using the internet for information? I love social media. I love writing. I love inspiring. I love visuals. And I love seeing people share amazing accomplishments with the cyber world. I do not love the fact that our relationships are being questioned, ruined and thrown away because we no longer know how to recognize our intuitions or treat others, especially our partners, with the dignity, confidence and communication that has become so foreign to us. So my question is to all of you relationship participants, when did we discard the concept of trust to practice deceit on the internet or become detectives in the lives of those we claim to be closest to? Let’s put an end to this trend and stop hiding behind our phone screens searching for secrets that may or may not be there and instead, enjoy, confront, build, trust and respect our relationships the way we should.
