HOTTER DAYS, HOTTER TRENDS:

What’s In For Spring and Summer

Minimalism? Not this summer. Cowbell jewelry is in, and the best thing you can do this season is head over to the Mart to get yourself some bangles. Big statement pieces are also in, working as the easiest way to turn your plain fit into a statement look. 5

Comfortable, colorful and somehow both retro and right-now, these flip-flops are coming back into style. With endless styles to choose from, these Brazilian classics are the easiest way to dress down your fit while keeping it stylish. 4

Matching sets are coming back into style as we channel our comfy-butcute looks for this season. Whether it is a comfy sweat set or a stretchy workout set, monochrome fits are the easiest way to look put together with zero effort involved.

From Coachella to “The White Lotus,” thin sunglasses have been replacing bold, statement glasses of the past and taking the fashion world by storm. Instead of distracting from your outfit with another bulky accessory, thin sunglasses add the perfect chic flair to anything from a festival to a farmers market fit … and spare your face from bad tan lines.

Mini, maxi, frayed or fitted, denim skirts are officially back in rotation. Working as the best go-to, denim skirts have a style for any occasion.

If statement pieces and funky jewelry are not for you, fun nail art can be the perfect summer accessory. Easier than ever with countless nail stickers, diy-kits and press-ons, nail art is the perfect way to show off your personal style and elevate every outfit you wear.

Mini flowers, tiny patterns and bright colors are stocking the shelves of every store in Miami — and for good reason. Paired with plain linen pants or jean shorts, microprint bikinis are the perfect way to show off your style — and your tan — on the shore this summer.

Ditching tight athleisure for stylish sweats, joggers and oversized tees, gymgoers this spring and summer are opting for both comfort and cooler clothes. Paired with sneakers like Hokas or New Balances, a baggy gym wardrobe is the perfect way to achieve an athletic and effortless look. 10

Gone are the days of the band tee and graphic hood ie. Men are seeing a softer summer in 2025, opting for plain pastels and lighter fabrics to stay cool — physically and fashionably.

LEISURE SPORTS:

Miami’s Athletic stress ball

Facing reality, everyone knows that life can be tough. Every person has a different way of relieving the stress created by their everyday lives, and for some people, they do so through non-competitive sports, also known as leisure sports. Organized sports have clearly defined boundaries regarding things like age unlike leisure sports, which are spontaneous and require no prior planning, making them easily accessible to people.

In the Miami area, many people have access to places where they can play sports such as tennis and golf for fun and to relax from the stress generated by work or school. Pickleball courts are popping up around the community, offering greater opportunities for people to engage in light-hearted activity.

While some leisure sports may involve friendly competition, the primary goal is enjoyment. These activities are typically less physically demanding and competitive than traditional sports like football and basketball. Popular leisure sports include bowling, golf, pickleball and tennis.

Spencer Blackman, who graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High in 1992, believes golf has remained a significant part of his life throughout the years.

“I grew up in Miami, and my grandparents lived in Boynton Beach, Fla.. They liked to golf. They lived on a golf course, so they lived in a condo. I could just take a bunch of golf balls and a golf club, go back behind the condo and just hit balls. So, I started doing that,” Blackman said.

Ever since Blackman played for the MPSH golf team, the sport has become an integral part of his daily life.

“[Golf is] just something that is part of me, and I love it. What I get out of it now is time with friends. I actually used to play alone more when I was younger. Now, I don’t enjoy that as much. I really only like to play when I can be with friends or others. Usually, people are really nice, and it’s a very challenging sport, so people are encouraging to each other, which is great,” said Blackman.

Despite not being a competitive sport, leisure sports still take up a significant amount of time for participants.

“In terms of balancing golf, yeah, it’s not easy. I have young kids, so I don’t actually get to play as much golf these days,” Blackman says. “When spring comes, I’m very excited to play. My friends and I plan a golf trip once a year, and I play when I can. As my kids are getting older, a lot of times on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, they have plans with friends, so I can play then. I still love the game, and it’s something I hope to play more.”

Alongside the Panther alumni who enjoy leisure sports,

current students are also taking them up. MPSH freshman and golfer Joslyn Sabina finds comfort in golf and uses it as a distraction from the real world.

“Even though I do other competitive sports like volleyball and dance, I use golf as a fun way to spend the time off that I have with my dad,” Sabina said. “I’ve been playing for around three years, and I’ve definitely gotten better over time. I always played when I was younger, and I love finding time to play every so often.”

Sabina does not play for any school sports teams, but loves the experience of playing with someone else in a non-competitive setting.

“I like playing alone, but I feel like it is always fun with other people, especially at places like Topgolf. I view it as a sport for sure, but I also play for the social aspect of it,” Sabina said.

Leisure sports serve as a reminder that athleticism does not always have to come with pressure. Whether it is spending time with others on the course or playing at the pickleball court, these low-effort, high-reward activities offer a meaningful outlet for lifelong enjoyment. Leisure sports stand out as an essential form of self-care, proving that the best kind of competition is no competition at all.
