Happy New Year from the Washington Foundation 2019 holds great promise for the Foundation. A promise of new energy, exceptional opportunities for collaborations, expansion of programs and activities, and exciting experiences. Indeed, the Foundation is ready for ONE Carousel of an adventure. We invite you to ride with us and to invite your friends to join us. We envision everyday as a day to celebrate what James and Janie entrusted to us to care for, to share, and to grow and we want you to be a part of the celebration.

My 2019 Director’s theme is simply ONE. The goal is outreach to ONE Million with response from ONE Million: dollars, friends, in-kind, and etc. We will begin by asking each of our friends to contribute $1.00 and to invite your circle of friends to contribute $1.00 each.

This may seem ambitious; but we believe it is achievable. We are ready to give it a try.

How will we reach ONE Million and gain ONE Million Dollars? We start with the Washington Board and then extend an invitation to each of you. You may stop by the Washington House any Tuesday, between Noon and 3:00 PM. If you see or know any of the Board members, simply give them your contribution. All contributions are tax-deductible.

The Washington Foundation is the home of the following: Back Porch Series * Conversations for Women, About Women and by Women; Conversations are on the last Sunday afternoon monthly, 4 to 6 PM. All women are welcome to these complimentary conversations.

The Washington house was 100 years old August 2018 and there is lots of work that needs to be done: Interior and exterior improvements, upgrading, restoration, including the detached studio and storage shed, restoration of the Fountain of Triumph, and the landscaping and greenhouse.

ANNE HAUBERG (1917-2016) EXTRAORDINARY PHILANTHROPIST CHARTER MEMBER & MEMBER EMERITUS Dr. James W. Washington Jr & Mrs. Janie Rogella Washington Foundation Charter board member Anne Gould Hauberg’s early participationin the development of the Foundation was a personal friend of James & Janie. She believed in their dream and did all she could so they could see their dream live before they passed in 2000.

After her death in 2016, she saw to it that the Foundation received a sizeable gift from her estate. This gift is a great factor in The Foundation’s continuing growth and community outreach. Her daughter, Sue, also a charter member, continues to contribute to the growth of the Foundation.

Choosing a Mountain to Climb I picked a mountain to climb both day and night.

Realizing that I have stayed in the valley too long, having wings of an eagle the valley wasn’t my home.

Then I chose a mountain to place my eyes upon, when I have paid my dues.

I should be marching on.

The mountain was steep and the crevices were deep and wide, but I had no fear for God was by my side.

e invite you to join us our 2019 Journey. You are welcome and encouraged to work along with us as we make our way to our goal of ONE MILLION: Dollars, in-kind, time or a combination of all three. We invite you to become a Charter Member of our DIRECTOR’S ONE MILLION CAMPAIGN: Outreach to friends, Inkind, and Dollars. Very simply, with your help, here’s how we begin: outreach to One million people, each giving $1.00 or more and asking each of your friends to give $1.00. This can be done. Each of our board members have given their $1.00 and are now asking their friends to “Please give $1.00 to the Mrs. Elma Horton Washington Foundation. You may even give $1.00 per month or more, whatever you wish. We are just asking for the minimum of $1.00. Let’s unite as ONE and Board Chair make this happen for Dr. James W. James W. Washington Jr. (1909-2000) is a lifetime member of the International Society of Poets. His book, Poems of Life, pairs his paintings and sculpture with his poetry to provide an insight into his life and his view of life.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE COMING JUNE 2019 Henry Smith

O Seattle Writer returns home for writing residency . . . . One thing I remember him [Washington] telling me was about a trip he made to Mexico City to visit the artist Diego Rivera. It seemed to have been a life-changing experience for him. Rivera took him to the art museum in Chapultepec park to see the Rivera murals and then to the basement of the museum. In the basement was a sculpture of a serpent biting his own tail.

Rivera said that the sculpture had been given to the Aztecs by Africans before the Europeans arrived. . . .

Now residing in Bossier City, Louisiana, The Foundation is excited to welcome Mr. Smith home to work on his book and share more of his Washington experiences as well as research on his book, The Big Picture.

I am pleased to share some of our 2019 activities, continuing from last year and adding something new: Washington Young Laureates in collaboration with the Seattle NAACP-ACTSO Program. Presenting the 2019 Washington Young Laureates at the Washington Annual Garden Party in May; expansion of the Artist in Residence Program by including two writers, Henry Smith in June and Tamika Moseley in September; The Path of Sculptors at the Frye Museum in collaboration with author Nancy Penrose; the Little Free Library located in front of the historical 100 year old home of the Washingtons; Washington Teen consortium, a assemblage of a diverse group of high school students with an interest in making a difference in their communities in novel ways with a focus on Collaboration self-empowerment, leadership development, communication skills, human relations, and production; Collaboration with the Bellevue Youth Symphony; Neighborhood historical tours with lunch; and a celebration in November remembering Dr. Washington on the anniversary of his 110th birthday.

Of course, we will continue with fund raising, discussing the possibility of a Cornerstone Memorial and working on the Director’s ONE Campaign. Yes, we have lots to do and welcome your participation in any way that you would like to contribute.

COMING FEBRUARY 24, 2019 # BACK PORCH SERIES 4 PM TO 6 PM Conversation about Women, For Women & By Women from a Male Prospective. Mr. William Jackson, will present to us four contemporary and four historical women that he considers Inspirational, Influential, Innovative, and Insightful. He will introduce them to us through engaging provocative conversation around the table. This promises to be a very dynamic Back Porch Causerie. Mr. Jackson is married to Dr. Karen Jackson (retired educator), former founder and CEO of Litcom and the father of two, Clarence & Karis.
