JANUARY PRAYER

Rev. Gail Mullen Chaplain Seattle Section NCNW Father, in the sweet and everlasting Name of Jesus, I praise you for another year. Year 2016 is gone and will never return. Even though we may have regrets, or dashed hopes, help us to also see the good that has happened. Lord, as we have entered a New Year, help us not make New Year Resolutions based on our emotions.

Help us to go into 2017 realistically with a mindset to be the best ‘us’ we can be. With all the uncertainties of this new year and the new president help us to look to you for our peace, joy, and fulfillment. Continually, guide our steps in the direction you would have us to go and lead us in the path that you and only you have ordained. I praise and thank you because your purpose for our lives is not based on the feckless of men, but on Your will and direction for us.

As Jeremiah tells the Israelites in Babylon captivity and assures them that HE SEES THEM and has not forgotten them: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then you shall call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will harken unto you.” In 2017, Lord help me to seek you with determination of hearing your plans for me. In everything that I will face in this new year, Father, I thank you because I know for a surety that YOU SEE ME. In Jesus Name, I prayer, AMEN

President’s Page ! Sarah JE Dean Greetings NCNW Members, Affiliates and Friends,

Seattle Section National Council of Negro Women, we can only succeed if we stand together. This organization was built on the strength and commitment of African-American women who had fewer financial opportunities and/or educational options. We are, charged with implementing their goals and dreams. Today more than ever, NCNW must prepare to protect the last will and testament of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and the legacy of our First African American First Lady and President. We have challenges, but we are empowered by our foremothers who laid the foundation for us to build upon.

Dorothy Height who served as President of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years is an example of that empowerment. The U.S. postal service stamp will feature Dorothy Height as the 15th African American woman and the 40th stamp of the Black Heritage Forever series. Dorothy Height was a tireless activist who dedicated her life to fighting for racial and gender equality. She was one of the most influential civil rights leaders of the 20th century. She stood with Martin Luther King Jr. as an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. She was an honored guest at the White House spanning terms of five Presidents, including President Barack Obama. The Dorothy Height stamp will be issued Feb. 1, 2017 in Washington, D.C. at Howard University.

NCNW and Delta members will be in full attendance.

NCNW organizations will also turn out in abundance for the Women’s March in Washington D.C., Seattle and other cities. I attended the MLK, Jr. Rally and March along with 10,000 outspoken and concerned citizens. I am inspired that this community understands how important it is to “STAY WOKE!” February is a jam-packed with activities, including Black History Month activities, the Jacob Lawrence Museum Exhibit, the Miss Black Washington USA Pageant, United Negro College Fund Drive, our Release Your Rummage Fundraiser and more. The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Associations are urging organizations to Rock Red…red shoes, red tie, red lipstick, red dress, red blouse, red purse, etc. Not just for Valentine’s Day, but National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.

December Holiday Gathering BJ’s at Westfield Mall

Founded in 1968, Seattle Section National Council of Negro Women is approaching its 45th year of serving this community. The year 2013 will be an historic occasion for our Section. In celebration of our founder, the Rev. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and all the founders of Seattle Section, the 150 Pig Program is dedicated in particular to the Rev. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s founding of Bethune-Cookman College with $1.50 and the time and money invested in this Section by our founders.

An invitation is extended to members and friends alike to contribute $1.50 per month for the next three years; or $50.00 per year for a three year period. All funds collected will be deposited and earmarked for the Lillian M. Gideon Legacy Awards. Maximize your gift by inviting your family and friends to match you dollar-for-dollar. Let’s fatten this old pig up.

Why a pig . . . National President, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, recently deceased, during her 40 year tenure as national president, implemented a pig program in the rural south and in Africa for the sole purpose of feeding hungry families.

WHY: Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs?

BECAUSE: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

In Celebration of Founder’s Day . . . . Mary McLeod Bethune Mary McLeod was born in Mayesville, S.C. Her parents, Samuel and Patsy McLeod, were former slaves; Mary was the fifteenth of 17 children. She helped her parents on the family farm and first entered a Presbyterian mission school when she was 11 years old. Later she attended Scotia Seminary, a school for African American girls in Concord, N.C., on a scholarship. She graduated in 1893; there she had met some of the people with whom she would work closely.

Though she had a serious turn of mind, it did not prevent her from being a lively dancer and developing a lasting fondness for music. Dynamic and alert, she was very popular and the acknowledged leader of her classmates. After graduating from Scotia Seminary, she attended the Moody Bible Institute.

Career as an Educator After graduation from Moody Institute, she wished to become a missionary in Africa; however, she was unable to pursue this end. She was an instructor at the Presbyterian Mission School in Mayesville in 1896 and later an instructor at Haines Institute in Augusta, Ga., in 1896-1897. While she was an instructor at Kindell Institute in Sumpter, S.C., in 18971898, she met Albertus Bethune, whom she later married.

Bethune began her career as an educator in earnest when she rented a two-story frame building in Daytona Beach, Fla., and began the difficult task of establishing a school for African American girls. Her school opened in October 1904, with six pupils, five girls and her own son; there was no equipment; crates were used for desks and charcoal took the place of pencils; and ink came from crushed elderberries. Thus began the Daytona Literary and Industrial School for Training Negro Girls, in an era when most African American children received little or no education.

At first Bethune was teacher, administrator, comptroller, and custodian. Later she was able to secure a staff, many of whom worked loyally for many years. To finance and expand the school, Bethune and her pupils baked pies and made ice cream to sell to nearby construction gangs. In addition to her regular classes, Bethune organized classes for the children of turpentine workers. In these ways she satisfied her desire to serve as a missionary.

As the school at Daytona progressed, it became necessary to secure an adequate financial base. Bethune began to seek financial aid in earnest. In 1912 she interested James M. Gamble of the Proctor and Gamble Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, who contributed financially to the school and served as chairman of its board of trustees until his death.

In 1923 Bethune's school for girls merged with Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Fla., a school for boys, and the new coeducational school became known as Bethune-Cookman Collegiate Institute, soon renamed BethuneCookman College. Bethune served as president of the college until her retirement as president emeritus in 1942.

She remained a trustee of the college to the end of her life. By 1955 the college had a faculty of 100 and a student enrollment of over 1,000. Since 1943, Bethune Cookman College has graduated more than 13,200 students. In 1931, the college received full accreditation and in 2007, was granted university status.

Other Activities Bethune's business activities were confined to the Central Life Insurance Company of Tampa, Fla., of which she was president for several years; the Afro-American Life Insurance Company of Jacksonville, which she served as director; and the Bethune-Volusia Beach Corporation, a recreation area and housing development she founded in 1940. In addition, she wrote numerous magazine and newspaper articles and contributed chapters to several books.
