Curational Review: Postscript of Silence

/2023/

The FW21 collection, "NOTHING NEW, SOMETHING NEW," draws inspiration from the ever-evolving fashion industry, where individuals seemingly in pursuit of novelty inadvertently produce strikingly similar goods. Social media accelerates the pace of everything, leaving little room for thoughtful contemplation and consideration of what products are genuinely needed. In the quest for creativity, it is discovered that many design highlights arise unexpectedly. A misjudged garment, a haphazard accumulation of fabric scraps, or a previously disregarded design draft can inexplicably transform into innovative designs.

Thus, FW21 by JUNWEI LIN deliberately slows down the creative process, gathering unfinished garments due to tight deadlines, canceled pieces from mismatched collections, or items rendered obsolete due to communication errors with manufacturers. These garments are meticulously disassembled and reshaped, forming the basis of a new collection.

The collaborative popup theme draws from the collection's casual everyday vibe and nostalgia, inspired by American collegiate baseball clubs, aiming to recreate the environment where high school youths change outfits daily within the exhibition space.

The flash setup, in collaboration with the boutique's pro, takes into consideration three primary interactive areas, including display windows, the main interior display space, and a schoolbook-themed photo spot.

While ensuring a comfortable flow of movement, the design optimally utilizes the store's existing structure for placing wardrobes and setting up interactive photo installations.

Customized team support flags, baseball equipment, and other materials are provided to offer viewers a variety of immersive photo opportunities, enabling them to better understand this season's fashion concept of "finding romance in the mundane of daily life" through observation and interaction.

As part of the opening event, visitors are handed paper invitations in advance, along with labels that can be sewn onto clothing. They can then choose to join a fictional club of their choice, participate in an initiation ceremony, and engage in schoollook-themed photo shoots.

The exterior window film utilizes gradient matte spray-painted film paper, creating an ambiguous and soft visual experience with patterns and colors that appear to be both hidden and revealed. The intention is to create a sense of intimacy through the harmonization of cool tones and an elusive quality.

The Coven in 夏日祭 ( Summer Festival ) / JUNWEILIN x SND shanghai pop-up / 2022 /

The pop-up collaboration between JUNWEI LIN and SND will host a summer festival, where amidst the kaleidoscopic fragments, we are overwhelmed with experiences, sensations, and explorations of our inner selves.

JUNWEI LIN SS22「夏日祭」

The inspiration is derived from the works of a Finnish female artist. HELENE SCHJEFRFBECK

The artist once expressed, "I have always been in pursuit of the deep inner world of the human psyche, things that people have not yet discovered about themselves; there, everything is still unnoticed, and it is where we can find the greatest discoveries." In her painting process, she has experimented with various techniques, such as intentional smudges and abrasions, or incorporating highlights and spots, by destructing and recreating the image, she aims to explore the deepest sensory aspects of the inner self.

With 「broken romanticism」as its core, JUNWEI LIN has found resonance with the brand's philosophy within these strokes, igniting the creative spark of this season. Throughout the design and development process, the approach of breaking down and reassembling has been employed to discover order from chaos, employing addition and subtraction amidst disorderly arrangements to achieve the balance in the final garment designs.

Integrated into the interactive installations reminiscent of Japanese market stalls are three main stops: a mobile cart offering beverages and snacks, a prayer capsule toy machine, and a tea rest pavilion (an open-display wardrobe). Viewers follow the spatial flow and pause here to experience these elements.

In this pop-up planning, greater consideration has been given to ensuring that viewers can actively engage with the installations within the limited indoor space, fostering experiences that create connections with the environment.

Indeed, incorporating such highly interactive elements not only enhances the engagement of viewers within the physical space but also encourages them to share their experiences on social media platforms, thereby amplifying the reach and impact of the event.

In the past, witches were believed to have sold their souls to the devil. In modern society, humans continuously compromise their souls to fulfill their desires. Each of us is incomplete and fragmented, yet we are also refining a romantic "witch" within the pains of loss.

For SS22, JUNWEI LIN extends this fragmented romanticism by juxtaposing irregular, wrinkled, broken, and neat, magnificent, shimmering details, creating strong contrasts akin to our transformation amid losses and the refinement of souls through suffering.

The pop-up abstracts the theme into an expedition through a jungle, blending elements of mysticism, divination, and folk art. Combined with the retro Chinese architectural style of IINC BOUTIQUE, the aim is to evoke a sense of stumbling upon a secret gathering in the forest.

The landscape design heavily incorporates floral arrangements with steel pipes to create an indescribable floating plant. These are species that exist only in fantasy, yet in this setting, they feel more than real, drawing entrants into an experience that is surreal.

In the exhibition space connected to the courtyard by a window, I've created a surreal forest garden using moss and broad-leaved plants. At the far end of the room, an entire wall is mirrored, creating an atmospheric reflection of the space. The dark vintage divination booth, illuminated by dim yellow lights, beckons visitors as they enter.

The fortunetelling booth is positioned as the final stop along the circulation route, visible through the window from the courtyard space, sparking curiosity and guiding visitors indoors to reach this destination. This design aligns with the theme of "exploration" central to the planning.

Opposite the floral installation, there's a customized display rack called the "Witch's Wardrobe" at the entrance. The combination of old wooden wardrobes and plants immerses visitors in the role of a witch in the jungle, allowing them to experience the garments firsthand.

In this showroom planning, there was a predominant emphasis on the utilization of floral installations, which also allowed me to acquire a wealth of skills in selecting floral materials. The degree of thematic and spatial alignment is also highly significant, a consideration that is crucial for curators to contemplate and prioritize during the initial stages of planning.
