Letter from the President of the Board: A REFLECTION

I am pleased to present the 2022-2023 Annual Report, highlighting the spirited volunteerism, philanthropic support and unique accomplishments made over the past year.

On behalf of the Lausanne Board of Trustees, I offer my sincerest gratitude for your enduring commitment to the mission of Lausanne. Each of you is a partner in Lausanne’s success, and I hope that this report reaffirms your generous investment in our school and all that it provides for our students and faculty. Everything we love about the Lausanne experience - everything that makes us distinctive and transformative - exists because of the time, treasure and talent given by donors like you.

I am also grateful to my fellow Board members for their fierce dedication to governance and fiscal oversight, forever steering our great school with Lausanne’s mission and vision at the forefront. As a Board, we remain committed to providing the best possible education and opportunities to every Lausanne student for generations to come.

Thank you again to all who continue to shape Lausanne’s future. We hope the reflections within this report provide each of you with immense pride in who we are, what we do and all that lies ahead.

“Lausanne is more than just a school. It’s a community of people who value global education, inclusiveness, innovation and service to others. As we continue to build meaningful relationships with Lausanne families, teachers and staff, we see the school as an extension of our family. In such a fast-changing world, where threats such as climate change are existential and technological opportunities abound, we see Lausanne as a highly adaptive environment that grows with the students and the world around them. A successful independent school requires substantial and sustainable investments. As members of the Lausanne community, we give because we want to honor our role in helping the school achieve its vision for the future.”

“When we think of Lausanne, we think of community. We think of a nurturing environment with high expectations, engaged faculty and students who love school. We’ve built such strong relationships with families and faculty alike that we’re certain will grow into lifelong friendships. When we imagine the future of Lausanne, we see the diverse, student-centered school it is now but with even more resources, opportunities and advantages for its students. We give because we value Lausanne’s innovative approach, and we want to help equip the school we love with the tools necessary for its students and faculty to thrive. We give because we see our investment at work, both on campus and within our children’s futures.”

“To us, Lausanne means one school from Early Childhood through Upper School, longitudinal relationships, diversity, inclusion and excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. We recognize that incredible, adaptive programs and facilities require continual support. As parents, we give to Lausanne as a way to honor our personal priorities, values and individual leadership while further strengthening our ongoing relationship with the school we love.”

“Lausanne means a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment for children. It's a place where children can thrive academically while feeling accepted and valued for their individuality. We see the future of Lausanne as a continuation of this commitment to excellence and inclusivity; a place where academic rigor remains a priority, ensuring that children are wellprepared for higher education and real-world situations. We hope Lausanne continues to embrace its diverse community, fostering an environment where every student and faculty member feels respected, accepted and celebrated for their uniqueness. We give to Lausanne because we believe in the importance of investing in not only our children's education but in the education and enrichment opportunities of all Lausanne students. The school’s dedication to a world-class education, coupled with its focus on cultural inclusivity and support for various learning styles and talents, assures our family that our contributions are making a meaningful impact within the Lausanne community and the Memphis community at large.”

“We love being a part of the Lausanne community. To us, Lausanne is a place that fuels the next generation of confident, competent leaders and well-rounded citizens by providing a safe space to nurture the individual needs and talents of our children and their peers while providing a top-tier education. Witnessing firsthand how much Lausanne has evolved over the past few decades while staying true to its core values is inspiring. We are proud to support Lausanne’s future by helping to ensure its access to the best faculty and staff, the best resources and the best facilities. The combination of the best community — students, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and staff — and best mission is truly unmatched. We know Lausanne will continue to be the most boldly innovative community in Memphis and beyond.”

AWARDS & HONORS

The Lausanne Way Award

The Lausanne Way award is presented annually to an individual who, through their actions and accomplishments, embodies the core values embedded in The Lausanne Way.

On September 22, 2022, The Lausanne Way Award was presented to both Theresa and Peter Heist. In addition to being longtime Lausanne parents, they have also served in numerous leadership roles, most notably as LPC Executive Director and President of Lausanne’s Board of Trustees, respectively. As dedicated servant leaders and tireless cheerleaders of all things Lausanne, Theresa and Peter are integral members of the Lausanne community, and our gratitude will endure for generations to come.

Young Alumni Panel

On January 2, 2023, Lausanne commenced the new year by inviting seven former students to participate in the annual Young Alumni Panel, where they shared personal experiences and insights with our Upper School students.

These distinguished alumni included Brinda Patel ‘15, Ben Calkins ‘16, Joseph Igoni ‘16, Christina Sigler ‘20, Ambria Williams ‘20, Jad Hamze ‘21 and India Norris ’22.

The panelists shared the personal journeys that ultimately guided their decisions in selecting colleges, universities, graduate programs, internships and career paths. During the discussion, panelists also shed light on how their time at Lausanne helped prepare them for what lay ahead, offered advice on what to anticipate when starting college and reflected on whether or not they would make any changes if given the chance to go through the college selection process again.

Chair of Ideas

One of the school's most prestigious honors, the title of Lausanne Chair of Ideas has been awarded 24 times since 1994 to Lausanne alumni and other distinguished individuals, continuing a tradition that began with the school's Distinguished Speaker Series in the 1960s, during which individuals such as Margaret Mead, William F. Buckley, B.F. Skinner and Aldous Huxley spoke to our students.

On March 27, 2023, this title was bestowed upon Zac Hill ‘04. With a resume boasting many esteemed roles, Zac is currently the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of the Office of American Possibilities. Co-chaired by a bipartisan team of former White House Domestic Policy Advisors, its projects have included The COVID Collaborative, Welcome.us, More Perfect, 24/7: A People's Filibuster for Gun Safety, Dignity.us and Frontline Justice. During the ceremony held in the Elder Performing Arts Center, Zac shared details about his life and career since graduating from Lausanne. He reminisced about his experience here alongside a diverse cohort of 47 peers, where the school’s emphasis on embracing diversity and leveraging differences to foster success had a lasting impact. He attributes his well-roundedness and readiness for college and future endeavors to the invaluable support and guidance he received from Lausanne.

Zac also stopped by several Upper School classes, where he was able to participate, chat and answer questions with students.

Commencement Speaker

On May 27, 2023, Lausanne had the privilege of welcoming Kathy Buckman Gibson as the Class of 2023 Commencement Speaker. Kathy currently serves as President and Chief Operating Officer at Buckman International and board member of Bulab Holdings, Inc., Buckman International’s parent company.

As a mother of twin daughters, Alicia ‘28 and Savannah ‘28, she felt compelled to connect with the students prior to this momentous day. Through a roundtable discussion with a small group of seniors, Kathy discovered that the Class of 2023 resembled less of a group of students and more of a close-knit family. She gained insights into their dedication to philanthropy and readiness to embark on their journeys in the real world.

During her graduation address, Kathy urged the students to adhere to eight particular guidelines:

(1) Always call your parents; (2) Discover your unique perspective, and confidently express your beliefs; (3) Find a mentor and network; (4) Discover your true passion, and wholeheartedly dedicate yourself to pursuing it; (5) Establish both short and long-term goals, and create a plan to execute them; (6) Embrace difficulties, and learn to adjust and accommodate; (7) Abide by the principle of treating others as you would like to be treated; (8) Embrace continuous learning.

In closing, rather than offering her own words of wisdom, Kathy requested that each graduate turn to a peer and express their aspirations for one another's future endeavors.

ALUMNI: THEN & NOW

Reflections on Lausanne and the World Beyond

Emma Whitehorn Fleming

Graduation Year: 2017

Current City, State: Memphis, TN

Favorite Lausanne memory:

Some of the best memories I made at Lausanne were within theater – the time spent rehearsing and being silly with friends is what I remember most fondly. I loved being part of a collaborative force working toward a common goal; those experiences taught me so much about organization and how no job is insignificant. And frankly, the shows were spectacular!

Life since Lausanne:

I graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a B.A. in Art History and received the chance to study in Italy for a brief period, which is where I met and later married my husband. Through the magic of a full circle experience, I now teach 5th grade science at Lausanne in the same classroom where I used to learn. It’s crazy to think that I'm now teaching the students who were in PK when I was a senior - they love seeing us in the yearbook together! I’m also the proud coach of Lausanne’s Rock Climbing Club and am honored to say that I have the greatest colleagues on earth.

How has Lausanne impacted your life in a meaningful way?

Lausanne has given me more than I could have ever anticipated. Not only did this school prepare me well for college and the world beyond, it also welcomed me back with open arms when I began teaching. Lausanne values the education of its students as much as it does that of its faculty. I'm so grateful to enjoy so many opportunities to grow as an educator so that I can pour that growth back into my students every day.

What’s one piece of advice you have for current Lausanne students?

Spend time connecting with others on campus. It can be easy to get wrapped up in assignments and tests, but if you have a few minutes, walk down to see the littles in Lower School. Visit with a teacher you haven't seen in a few years. There’s no way to know where life will take you, but you can count on the connections you make at Lausanne to endure through every leg of the journey.

Benjamin Orgel

Graduation Year: 2010

Current City, State: Memphis, TN

Favorite Lausanne memory:

One of my favorite memories would have to be starting my very own cell tower company at 16 years old, while a student at Lausanne. I was able to build the business up to 16 sites before selling it in 2016 and joining the family business soon thereafter

Life since Lausanne:

After graduating from Lausanne, I attended the University of Texas in Austin, where I earned a degree in city planning and real estate. From the age of 16, I knew I wanted to be involved in both real estate and cell towers. Just 12 hours after graduating college, I began working in the cell tower industry and am now an owner of Tower Ventures, a company which specializes in wireless telecommunication structures. I also joined my father in building a large development company by the name of Orgel Family LP, which takes on real estate projects nationwide.

I’m honored to have recently been featured in the Memphis Business Journal as one of Memphis' 40 Under 40. While my team and I don't work for awards - only to better Memphis - I’m truly grateful to be recognized for doing good.

Some upcoming projects include revitalizing Memphis’ Snuff District (which includes Front Street, Mud Island and Harbor Town), Varsity Spirit Headquarters, a 30,000 sq. ft. event center and a two-story commercial mixed-use space and redeveloping the 100 N. Main building, the largest building in Memphis.

How has Lausanne impacted your life in a meaningful way?

Lausanne is an incredible institution. I couldn’t have attended a better school. My teachers were so willing to help, and my interests were never reduced to simple black and white; I was allowed to explore the grey, which is much more reflective of life itself. At Lausanne, I learned the true power of the phrase, “Ask, and you shall receive.”

What’s one piece of advice you have for current Lausanne students?

A piece of advice for young professionals: Go for it! Be bold, reach out, ask questions. Most people are willing to help. Let them know you’re interested.

Sherrye Patton Henry

Graduation Year: 1952

Current City, State: New York, NY

Favorite Lausanne memory:

As a student from the ’50s, it may be hard to describe to Lausanne students today – with your gorgeous campus filled with handsome buildings and expansive sports fields – how truly simple our school life was in those days. My graduating class of seven girls met every morning with our total student body of 40 in the living room (our study hall) of a small neighborhood home on Central Avenue, just west of Belvedere. Classes were held in various rooms on the first and second floors, lunch was served in the converted garage (you got wet running from the building when it rained) and the screen porch on the back of the building held a shelf with a typewriter if we wanted to teach ourselves to type. No sciences were offered, but I took four years of Latin and even won the Memphis Latin contest.

Despite the simplicity, my sister, Patsye Patton Fearey ’54, and I loved it. We knew all the teachers well and made close friends in our tiny classes. Our elderly principals, Mrs. Jett and Miss Statler, called

us by name as we arrived each morning, and Miss Statler rang a handheld bell after every class. Pat and I had fun working with our gym instructor (though we had no gym, just a side yard where we fought off bumblebees while playing kickball) to start the school’s first Field Day – Pat as captain of the Gold Team and I of the Blue – which was a great success. We both remember well our assignments to read three books per month for Mrs. Nelson’s English class and one per month for Mrs. Butler, who taught history, plus a summer reading list for which we wrote dozens of reviews after vacation. However, there was nothing in the curriculum preparing us for careers; in fact, women seldom went to college in those days. Getting an “MRS” was the degree most of us sought and attained. But in my senior year, Mrs. Jett called me into her small office and handed me a brochure of the girls’ college she had chosen – Sweet Briar – and that’s where I went.

All that individual attention had an impact. It was a time before cell phones, internet, social media and even color television. Girls in those days had such a narrow view of our future that we could barely envision a world beyond the Mississippi, yet Lausanne somehow instilled in each of us the confidence to meet the challenges that would surely come our way.

Life since Lausanne:

My first major challenge was being pulled out of Memphis when my husband joined the John F. Kennedy Administration as head of the Federal Communications Commission. But that drastic move to Washington – which I feared – also opened up the world of broadcasting to me. In 1968, soon after my husband moved the family to New York City, my first job was reporting for a local radio station; my second as the first woman in the country to broadcast editorials for WCBS-TV; and soon after, I became host of the first local television show just for women, appropriately named Woman!

Those were tough days for women in the ’60s. After a divorce, I discovered that women couldn’t get a credit card or a mortgage without a man’s co-signature. Women couldn’t serve on juries, as we were thought too emotional at certain times of the month, nor could we enter certain restaurants, bars or clubs in the city without a male escort. I became a confirmed feminist and aired that attitude five days a week

38
Above: Sherrye Patton Henry ’52 enjoys a trip down memory lane during a visit to campus last May. A portrait of ‘Old Lausanne’, so fondly remembered by Sherrye and her sister, hangs in the background.

with The Sherrye Henry Program on WOR-Radio for 16 years. Later, I ran for the New York State Senate, and when I lost, wrote a book – The Deep Divide: Why American Women Resist Equality – on why women don’t vote for female candidates who stand for their values – a problem that endures today.

Finally, I ran the Women’s Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration for the Clinton Administration and then spent five years on the Hill working for the NY congresswoman who served as co-chairman of the Women’s Caucus. All of these experiences led to one personal fact that I still have a hard time believing: I met, interviewed or worked for a total of eight presidents of the United States. Meanwhile, Pat, far away in Seattle, fought her own battles for equity, heading up a blue-ribbon public relations firm for 35 years in an era when women just didn’t do that and becoming one of the first women ever to serve on the boards of the Seattle U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Seattle Rotary Club.

How has Lausanne impacted your life in a meaningful way?

My sister and I learned from our Lausanne education that well-trained minds can develop deeply held beliefs that prepare students for a lifetime of service, standing for and fighting for those values, regardless of what we do or where we live.

What’s one piece of advice you have for current Lausanne students?

My takeaway message for all of you lucky students enrolled at the inspiring multi-cultural, globally-oriented Lausanne Collegiate School of today – a message that I learned the hard way – is that everything is better when equality rules: your personal relationships, your neighborhoods, your city, your nation, your planet. You’ve got this now. Go for it!

Jarred Reed

Graduation Year: 2009

Current City, State: St. Louis, MO

Favorite Lausanne memory:

My favorite memory would have to be performing my music at ArtsFest SportsFest!

Life since Lausanne:

I’m a corporate lawyer who loves to travel with friends, family and my significant other.

How has Lausanne impacted your life in a meaningful way?

Lausanne has taught me that the real world needs diversity in culture, ideas and beliefs in order to function successfully.

What’s one piece of advice you have for current Lausanne students?

My advice is to explore the various courses and extracurricular activities you may have initially frowned upon. Your future self will appreciate the fact that you were exposed to valuable opportunities that often create fond memories that last the rest of your life.

ONWARD

Letter from the Headmaster:

As we approach Lausanne’s centennial, we’re prompted to reflect on the remarkable growth our school has experienced throughout its history - a history marked by distinguished academic accolades, extraordinary artistic and athletic achievements, vital campus upgrades and above all else, the education of thousands of empowered global citizens.

This past year has been yet another celebration of exceptional achievements, thanks in no small part to you - our beloved, tenacious Lausanne community. Through your gifts of time, financial resources, energy and goodwill, Lausanne is one step closer to realizing its vision for the future.

Now at the beginning of its 98th year, our school is on the cusp of a new era - one where we can fully demonstrate our passion for innovative education and fortify our reputation as one of the country’s premiere academic and globally minded institutions. In the year ahead, your continued support will remain critical in allowing Lausanne to move forward. With and only with your most ambitious support, the school we love will transition into its next 100 years bigger, bolder and more adaptive than ever.

Thank you for being a part of the Lausanne community. We are honored and excited to forge our future with you.
