editor’s letter MAY 2018

This year marks the 5th anniversary of Wayne Magazine covering the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair. The May issue has become very dear to my heart, and I look forward to working on this extremely special edition each and every year now. Through the last five years I have learned a vast amount about the history of Devon, the beneficiary - Bryn Mawr Hospital, the exhibitors, the various competitions that occur during the 10-day event, the volunteers, the country fair and everything else that goes into play to pull off this grand show each year. I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing individuals who have dedicated their time every year to volunteer at Devon, and one day all of their memorable stories should be told! I have grown to become a true appreciator of the exhibitors, their horses and everything they endure to make it to Devon. It’s a remarkable accomplishment in its own right.

Every year I immerse myself in putting this issue together alongside my art director, Nancy Follman and the infamous Devon Horse Show photographer, Brenda Carpenter. Our little team pulls together an issue that is entirely dedicated to Devon, and we deliver a beautiful publication that represents the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair in the best possible light with quality editorial paired with stunning photography. I’m proud of what we have accomplished in these five years for Devon and the community. All of this would not be possible without the partnership of my incredibly dedicated advertisers and the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair. I thank all of you for supporting Wayne Magazine and everything that we strive to do for Devon. I hope you are able to come out as much as possible this year to enjoy everything that Devon has to offer you, your family and friends. Let the show begin! Sincerely,

And nearly a century of partnership with the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair

L to R: Richard C. Ill, chairman, Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation Campaign Leadership Committee; Wayne W. Grafton, chairman, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair; Beth Wright, co-chair, 2017 Devon Country Fair; Lisa Estabrook, co-chair, 2017 Devon Country Fair; Andrea F. Gilbert, president, Bryn Mawr Hospital; and Richard O’Donnell, president, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair during the annual Devon Check Presentation and reception at Bryn Mawr Hospital in December 2017. The ceremonial check represents a $400,000 payment on Devon’s $2 million pledge to the hospital’s For Every Generation capital campaign.

As we continue construction of the new seven-story Patient Pavilion—to feature new operating rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit, maternity, labor and delivery units, as well as a state-of-the-art critical care unit dedicated to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair—we at Bryn Mawr Hospital would like to take a moment to thank this community for your support throughout the years. We extend special thanks to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair for its longstanding partnership and patronage. Building the future of Bryn Mawr Hospital for generations to come.

COMMUNITY

CELEBRATING 125 YEARS IN SERVICE by Laurie Wightman

T

his year marks the 125th anniversary of Bryn Mawr Hospital serving as the community hospital on the Main Line. Through their strong commitment of offering advanced medical technology and access to some of the most qualified medical staff in the area, Bryn Mawr Hospital has received consistent national recognition as a top hospital in the country. “We are a visionary hospital where education and serving the community are the roots of who we are,” commented Andi Gilbert, President of Bryn Mawr Hospital. Additionally, it is through personal relationships and compassion that is given to each patient that has kept Bryn Mawr Hospital as the desired hospital in our area, and in turn has made many patients become volunteers due to their comforting experiences at BMH. One of the most special relationships that has continued to evolve for almost 100 years is between the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair and Bryn Mawr Hospital. Each year in May, over 2,000 volunteers come together to staff the Devon Country Fair and support the efforts of raising funds to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair is the single largest and longest donor to Bryn Mawr Hospital, and has one of the largest volunteer fundraising efforts in the country. Volunteers have raised over $16,000,000 to date, with annual donations to the hospital for specific initiatives based on the hospital’s largest priority needs. “Across the nation our most coveted relationship is with the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair. We are so grateful for everything that Devon has done for the hospital, and continues to do,” stated Andi Gilbert. Devon’s most recent contribution to BMH has been a $2 million pledge over 5 years to the hospital’s “For Every Generation” capital campaign. The campaign will create a new, seven-story Patient Pavilion on the hospital’s campus, featuring a new Intensive Care Unit, 12 new operating rooms, a new Labor and Delivery unit, critical care and more. The anticipated finalization of the initiative will be in November, 2018 with operations beginning in February, 2019. This unique and special relationship is only possible through the sincere dedication of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair volunteers. WayneMagazine.com | May 2018

1930’s 1940’s

The Country Fair used to offer Goat Cart rides for 25 cents. Children eagerly anticipated attending the Devon Horse Show so they may have the chance to get a ride around the Country Fair. Goat carts were used a lot in rural areas of PA, and now are vintage collectables. In this photo, volunteers Charlotte Marquissee (in white coat) and Mary Dickson are pulling Emma and Edward Klepp in a goat cart in 1933.

The Flower Cart originated in the 40’s as another way to raise money at Devon. The cart would be pulled around with cut flowers placed within to be sold to spectators. Mostly young men would purchase flowers or boutonnieres to give to the young women. However, in this photo, Louise Kelly (3 years old) pinned a carnation on the jacket of her brother Lance Kelly (5 years old) in 1949.

the charming & exciting years at the devon horse show

1958

The famous Gypsy Rose Lee, known for being a burlesque entertainer, attended the Devon Horse Show to perform an act in the Wanamaker Oval riding 4 horses. It was a rainy evening and the oval was rather muddy. Jimmy Robinson carried Gypsy Rose out to the oval and placed her on the horses so she wouldn’t get dirty. This was a slightly risqué move and many spectators gawked in surprise!

1950’s

Jimmy Robinson, longtime Devon participant, thought the crowd would get a kick out of him riding into the Wanamaker Oval on a chariot with four Shetland ponies. The spectators roared with excitement and the idea was a great triumph at Devon that year.

1960’s

President Eisenhower was a great fan of horse events and shows. He attended the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair twice. Here in this photo he is accompanied by Tom Bright, a former President and Chairman at Devon, as they enjoyed a day of events in 1963.

DINING

AN EPICUREAN DELIGHT AT DEVON by Laurie Wightman

T

he Devon Horse Show box seats have always been in high demand with a long tradition of families passing their Devon box seats down from generation to generation. It is part of the charm at Devon, and the owners of these box seats find great joy in taking their place each evening with family and friends as they enjoy the nightly equestrian competitions. The excitement of watching the jumpers is balanced by the spectator’s amusement in revealing their prized baskets of food, beverages, fine china, silver and whatever else they may pull out of their hats. This too has become a great tradition at Devon where the box holders strive to get as creative as possible with their fancy spreads of delicious bites. However, there is a fairly new tradition on the scene that may quite possibly help relieve individuals of the work in putting these elaborate baskets together. For the last four years, Cornerstone restaurant, located in Wayne, has provided guests of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair with the most delectable and stunning baskets of food and wine to make anyone envious. Individuals have the option of choosing from a variety of small, medium or large Peterboro picnic baskets or the Nantucket Bike Basket Co. as an alternative. Either option is a fabulous way to entertain at Devon while leaving the work to Cornerstone. You can choose from an assortment of fine cheeses, charcuterie,

spreads, gourmet sandwiches and salads, with decadent desserts. These options are accompanied with fine linens, including a fouta blanket if you’d prefer, plates, flatware and most importantly amazing bottles of wine provided by Cornerstone. With their new extensive wine program and shop at the recently expanded restaurant, their sommelier has hand-picked an entire bottle list that will have you swooning over every varietal. Particularly for this season, Cornerstone has unveiled a brilliant Rosé program offering 30+ different Rosés to choose from! There is one amazing Rosé in particular that will be quite fitting at the Devon Horse Show and will have you looking like a star. Simply ask Christine or Nick Kondra, owners of Cornerstone, for a bottle of “The Wither’s” Rosé to be tucked into your epicurean basket, and you’ll fit right in. The Withers Winery is located on the Sonoma Coast of California, and fittingly named their wine after the withers of a horse, which is how you measure the standard of a horse’s height. Very clever indeed! In addition to the picnic baskets that Cornerstone prepares for Devon spectators, they also offer Bento Boxes and Pony Boxes for exhibitors and visitors during the 10-day event. Bento Boxes can be filled with delicious tea sandwiches, larger sandwiches and salads,

tasty sides and sweets. Pony Boxes are filled with either PB & Tri-Berry jam sandwiches or grilled organic chicken sandwiches for the little ones, along with chips or veggies and a lemon bar or strawberry shortcake. Can it get any better than that? In addition to the new wine shop at Cornerstone, their restaurant has doubled in space offering a full dining room and bar with a craft cocktail program. This stunning space is a wonderful option for visitors during the Devon Horse Show, and for locals who haven’t had the opportunity to stop by and see the new space. When Cornerstone originally opened back in 2015 the mission was clear – Christine and Nick wanted to bring all things they loved from around the world and share their extensive culinary experiences with locals of the Main Line, Philadelphia and beyond. They continually seek out exceptionally sourced products from small-batch farms and purveyors to bring the best culinary experiences to Cornerstone. Not only have they offered the intimate setting of their 14-seat chef ’s counter for the last three years, they have also invited customers to experience their artisanal market with the most amazing selections of cheeses and charcuterie from around the world. The luxurious new dining area and stunning bar create an atmosphere that is sophisticated yet inviting. “We have a fantastic following here at Cornerstone,” remarked Christine. “We want to build on that and continue to create the best experiences for our customers that we possibly can.” With an extraordinary menu of bites to small and large plates, you will want to linger in this newly expanded space for hours. Be sure not to miss out on the infamous Oyster Hour from 3:30PM-5:30PM. My suggestion? Oysters and Rosé all day long. Bon Appétit!
