editor’s letter SPRING 2018

Wayne Magazine is back, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! That is due to the many of you who consistently reached out to let me know how loved this special publication is in the community, and how very much it has been missed. So here we are, as the spring season brings on new beginnings this can be one addition that we get to see more of starting this month. In 2018, Wayne Magazine will come out four times a year, targeting the most popular seasons and treasured issues. We begin with the Spring Guide right here, and then will include the ever-coveted Devon Horse Show Edition in May, followed by the Fall Guide in September, and the Holiday Guide in November. The secret to the success of Wayne Magazine comes from the extra love and support from all of you. I thank my advertising partners who had enough faith to come on board and be a part of a publication that has always represented everything that Wayne embodies, and will continue to do so. I thank all of you who pushed me to bring back something that not only became a treasured magazine to the community of Wayne, but also has had my heart since 5 years ago when I first launched the publication. My single request is for your continued emails, phone calls, conversations and overriding support so this little baby can stay alive and continue to make Wayne shine in the best possible light. Enjoy the first issue of Wayne Magazine in 2018, and keep a look out for the issues that will be delivered to over 60+ businesses in and surrounding Wayne. I look forward to seeing you around town! dog of the month by Laurie Wightman

M

eet Finn, the new mascot of Wayne Magazine! This bundle of joy came into our lives the day before Thanksgiving, and life has never been the same. For all the Dog of the Month stories I have written for other people’s dogs, which I have enjoyed thoroughly, this story might need to be my favorite for all the biased reasons you would imagine. Have you seen those car magnets that have a paw print with the question of, “Who Rescued Who”? I’ve looked at those magnets in the past and have wondered exactly what it meant. I now know going through the process of rescuing a puppy, exactly what it means and I can tell you I believe little Finn may have possibly rescued me. The overwhelming amount of love and laughter that has filled our home since adopting him has been immeasurable. As my husband Michael repeatedly says, it’s this new little spirit around the house that has made our family complete. We adopted Finn or Finney (as I’ve nicknamed him), through the exceptional DAWGS Prison Program. I can’t say enough about how wonderful the purpose of this program is, and the end result is beyond rewarding. DAWGS Prison Program rescues puppies and dogs from shelters and places them in a training program with inmates who provide the dogs with basic obedience training, socialization and most importantly, love. The inmates learn from professional trainers, Amy and Steve Eckert, to teach their partnering dog basic obedience commands over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. The dogs live with the inmates 24/7 through their training process and until they find their forever home. The puppies receive love possibly for the first time in their lives, and in return offer that love back to inmates who equally need it. These last three months of my life have been some of the best days I can remember. Each morning feels like Christmas when I get to see that little fanny wiggle, and I’m greeted by oodles of kisses. Finn reminds me every single day to just embrace life, be happy and simply offer love to the world. It’s funny how a dog has become my greatest teacher on how to live a better life. 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF HORACE TRUMBAUER by The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Philadelphia Chapter

T

he Philadelphia Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) will be presenting the Second Biennial Trumbauer Awards, to be bestowed on November 15, 2018, in the Trumbauer-designed Lincoln Ballroom of The Union League of Philadelphia. The awards program honors exemplary work in contemporary classical architecture, design, planning, and the allied arts. Named for internationally renowned, native Philadelphian architect Horace Trumbauer (1868-1938), the Trumbauer Awards celebrate contemporary classical projects that express the breadth and inclusiveness present in Trumbauer’s expansive work. “The awards are so prestigious.  Deserving projects in architecture, design, planning and the allied arts receive significant recognition from colleagues, peers and the public for work that has the great potential to inspire,” stated Eileen Devine, board member of the ICAA and owner of Devine Designs, Inc. “This year, the awards will be especially momentous.  The dinner and gala will also be a celebration of Horace Trumbauer’s (1868-1938) 150th birthday.” Trumbauer’s extraordinary success followed modest professional and social beginnings, and he was unrivaled in the early 20th century in American architecture for the number and magnificence of his projects. This year the ICAA celebrates the 150th anniversary of Trumbauer’s birth with themed events throughout the region in honor of the native Philadelphian’s tremendous contributions to American architecture, including programs at the Parkway Central branch of the Free Library (designed by Julian Abele, chief designer in Trumbauer’s Philadelphia firm) WayneMagazine.com | Spring 2018

and at the Trumbauer-designed Ardrossan Estate in Villanova. “In designing some of the Philadelphia area’s most significant homes and important public buildings, like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, native Philadelphian Horace Trumbauer contributed immeasurably to the rich architectural heritage of our area,” commented Kyle Lissack, board member of the ICAA and owner of Pinemar Builders. The Trumbauer awards program recognizes the work of individuals and firms to preserve and advance the classical tradition in the greater Philadelphia area.

Following a jurying session, awards will be presented in the following categories: • New Residential Architecture under or over 5,000 s.f. • Historic Preservation • Sympathetic Renovation or Addition • Non-Residential Architecture, Small or Large (includes Commercial, Institutional, Civic and Ecclesiastic) • Interior Design—Residential, Non-Residential, Single Room • Ancillary Structures • Landscape Architecture • Urbanism and Planning • Architectural Arts/Craftsmanship • Fine Arts • Patronage/Stewardship (non-juried, board-selected award) • Student Project/Portfolio

INSPIRING INTERIORS FOR SUMMER HOMES by Laurie Wightman

M

arch is here at last which always welcomes us with the first day of spring, or dare I say, a glimmer of hope. We finally begin to feel warmer days coming our way in the not so distant future. For many, it’s a time to begin thinking about plans for the summertime. If you are fortunate enough, you start to think about your summer home at the beach, in the mountains, on a lake or in New England somewhere. The endless list comes out for all the items that need to be addressed in order to get your home open for the summer season ahead. You take the spring to refresh your thoughts, and feel inspired as things begin to come to fruition. Visions of sprucing up the kitchen, bedrooms, and living areas start taking precedence and suddenly without even realizing it, you are ready to freshen up your summer oasis! Our trusted local designer, Eileen Devine of Devine Designs, has become an icon in the area with distinctive interiors for residential and commercial clients. With such flawless ease and elegance to her style, Eileen Devine always knows how to leave her distinguishing mark on each project she graces. She also has the prestigious position of sitting on the board of the Philadelphia chapter, ICAA – Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. She has had the opportunity to work with various local clients who have a second home and they always turn to Devine Designs to help create that summertime aesthetic that each client is searching for. Devine Designs is a full-service interior design firm located in the heart of Wayne at 100 Lancaster Avenue. Their portfolio showcases a broad range of decorative styles, new construction and renovation projects. Eileen fills many different roles in working with her clients depending on the scope of the project such as: drawings, documents, purchasing specifications for all interior elements, furnishings and renovations with the help of her Project Coordinator, Lee Anne Mazza. “Our services encompass the early conceptualization of a living environment, the planning, acquisition of furniture, finishes, art, accessories and custom decorative details,” commented Eileen. “It goes all the way through to the installation and enjoyment of a unique space.” As we anticipate the dog days of summer, and begin indulging ourselves with home décor inspiration for those lovely summer homes, here are a few decorating tips from Eileen Devine herself: • Blur the lines between indoors and outdoors by making your patios, terraces and porches imaginative, open-air rooms. • Use a cooler color palette for an Easy Breezy feel. Accent with romantic Mediterranean patterns and pops of color. • Well placed lanterns are the finishing touch in any vacation home.

Devine Designs is known to use a client-centered and collaborative approach which ensures that the finished product meets their clients’ expectations of style and quality while capturing their personal interest tastes and lifestyles. “With many clients, I have made a commitment to become part of their lives, as well as their lifestyle,” added Eileen. “That’s really what the business is about – establishing a relationship and working with each client as a partner.” This has shown to be true with so many of Eileen’s clients, and here are just a few testimonials that speak directly to the heart of her work.

“If there is one word to describe the feeling that Eileen created for our little cottage by the bay, it would have to be peaceful.  As a skilled visual artist with a remarkable eye for color, Eileen worked her magic and was able to capture this calming effect for us.  Spending time there is so relaxing and gives us so much joy.”

“Eileen was able to capture our vision to expand our mountain home for suiting the needs of our ever-growing family.  She made use of every square foot in the plan using  functional seating designs with creative use of lighting, textured fabrics, and furniture.  The elements of our beautiful outdoor space were carefully considered throughout so that we now enjoy magnificent views from every angle.  She and her team are a delight to work with! Not a detail is missed when working with Eileen.”

“Eileen’s design work on my home in Nantucket was a tour de force. Impressive in so many ways.  She orchestrated the delicate balance of historical significance, quiet elegance and everyday comfort. ...Masterful at the nuance of color. Eileen deftly managed both the left and right brain aspects of our project.  An absolute delight from concept through execution!”

30 YEARS & STILL GOING STRONG

PROFILE

by Laurie Wightman Congratulations on your 30th anniversary at The Wayne Art Center, Nancy! It must be a fulfilling feeling to look back on so many accomplishments through the years and see how far the art center has come. What brought you here 30 years ago, and more importantly what has kept you here? I was exposed to the arts at an early age and as I became more involved in creative pursuits, I realized their importance and intrinsic value. Upon accepting the position as Executive Director of the Wayne Art Center (WAC) in 1987, I saw a rudimentary art center and envisioned the possibilities of what it could become. I envisioned something that could be built for the future when the challenge presented itself, I therefore dedicated myself to a long term commitment to see this vision through. What has been most rewarding about working at The Wayne Art Center? The people I have met and whom the Wayne Art Center has touched has been the most rewarding aspect of my involvement here. There have been so many talented members, volunteers, teachers, staff and artists who have helped Wayne Art Center achieve its long term goals. The biggest reward of my tenure at WAC has been helping to bring enjoyment to others and providing our community with opportunities to learn, create, and find camaraderie through the arts. You must be so proud of the many achievements that have occurred through the years. Is there one in particular that really stands out to you? There have been several accomplishments along the way, overseeing two successful, multi-million dollar fund raising campaigns and building expansion projects has definitely been one and subsequently, being recognized as one of the most vibrant art centers in our region is another. Establishing a major international contemporary craft exhibition, Craft Forms, has showcased collectible museum-quality contemporary works of art to our community in December for the past 24 years. Bringing the Wayne Art Center Plein Air Festival to Wayne in May has introduced our community to an ever-changing group of national plein air artists who capture the history and beauty of our area through landscape painting. Do you have any new plans or visions in place for the future at The Wayne Art Center? Helping the Wayne Art Center remain relevant and vibrant in the ever changing demands of our lives and being able to move forward with the times and still remain true to our roots is of utmost importance. Through my commitment, I am thankful for the opportunity to have been able to build a cultural resource that is a viable part of the future of the arts, the Wayne Community, and the Philadelphia region. Pappardelle with Herbed Lemon Peas and Ricotta

2 cups shelled fresh peas, or frozen peas thawed ¾ cup unsalted butter 4 scallions thinly sliced 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest ¼ cup chopped fresh flat parsley 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh chives 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly grated pepper 12 ounces fresh (or dried) pappardelle 1 cup fresh ricotta cheese ½ cup shaved or finely grated parmesan cheese

1. Cook pappardelle in a pot of boiling salted water for 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. Drain and reserve in pot. 2. Cook fresh peas in a saucepan of boiling salted water for about 3 minutes or until tender. If you are using frozen peas, no need to cook. 3. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add scallions and peas, and cook, stirring constantly until scallions are just beginning to soften and peas are heated through. This will take about 1 minute in total. 4. Remove pan from heat and add lemon zest. Stir in parsley and chives. Season with salt and pepper. 5. Place fresh ricotta and 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Combine until well-seasoned. 6. Combine pappardelle, herbed lemon pea sauce and fresh ricotta in a large bowl. Sprinkle fresh parmesan for taste.

Strawberry Rhubarb Hand-Pies For crust: • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons sugar • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 orange or 2 clementines/tangerines, zested • 16 tablespoons cold unsalted butter cut into cubes For filling: • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter • 5 oz. strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped • 2 oz. rhubarb, peeled and roughly chopped • 3 tablespoons sugar • ½ tablespoon rice wine vinegar • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • ¼ teaspoon lemon juice • 1 pinch kosher salt 1. Crust: In a food processor, add dry ingredients. Pulse until combined. Add butter and zest pulse until mixture resembles dry cornmeal. Butter pieces should not be larger than a pea. Add water 1Tbsp. at a time and pulse until it pulls together. Transfer dough to a flat surface and pat into disk. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Roll to long rectangle about ⅛ inches thick and use a pastry or ravioli roller to divide into 2 inch squares. 2. Filling: Melt butter in a 2-qt saucepan over medium heat. Cook strawberries and rhubarb until soft and jam like, 6-8 minutes. Stir in sugar, vinegar, pepper, lemon juice, and salt – cook 3 minutes more. Let cool to room temperature then cover and chill at least 30 minutes before using. 3. Assemble: Put 1 Tbsp. filling in center of pastry square. Place another square on top and fork or crimp seal. With a sharp knife, make a small X in the top. Brush with egg wash (1 egg to 1 Tbsp. water) and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 to 30 min until golden brown.
