FULL CIRCLE Jane Maxwell’s mixed media collages explore contemporary issues of female body image, incorporating vintage materials that recall the glamour of post-World War II pop culture. In her current work, seductive, trim female silhouettes are central icons.
“I search for silhouettes everywhere,” Maxwell says, “on billboards, in red carpet photos, fashion runway shows and magazines. I’m interested in taking those iconic moments that are so present in the consumer’s mind, and deconstructing the image.”
Drawing inspiration from American Pop Artists such as Rauschenberg and Warhol, Maxwell’s art both deconstructs and illuminates the notion of the feminine ideal—illustrating the push-pull of desire and pressure that women feel. Provocatively posed, her figures are stripped of fashion and airbrushing, molded instead from layers of found and vintage papers. She enlists old movie posters, produce crate labels and advertising signs to compose the colors, texture and text that surround
In this new series, richly detailed circles are also paramount—integral players in both composition and subject. A classic symbol of perfection, the circle also evokes a myriad of other metaphors: a mirror, a scale, flashbulbs on a runway, or even thought bubbles, capturing a moment of internal reflection. Infused with cultural commentary about women’s relationships with their physical form, each canvas is the result of many hours of labor: layering and sanding, building up and scraping back. Maxwell’s technique incorporates hot melted beeswax, which lends a translucent depth. Each piece is then finished with a coat of high gloss resin, where, in certain light, the viewer may find him or herself reflected in the image, and enclosed within its sphere.
