PhD & Research-Based Masters Programs Bulletin ISSUE 10.2 | JUNE 2016

Research-Based Program Updates When our PhD in Management Program began back in 2005 we had four registered students. Over the years, our program continued to grow and as of September 2016 we will have 45 students enrolled in our various PhD and MSc fields. With the approval of the MSc in Management: Marketing, our PhD and Research-Based Masters Programs are some of the fastest growing programs on campus. During the past ten years, 13 doctoral students and 25 MSc students have graduated from our programs, all of whom have found placements in either industry or academia in North America and the Middle East. Our students frequently win prestigious scholarships such as OTS, SSHRC, and OGS; participate and present papers in national and international conferences; are successful in publishing their papers in academic journals, some of which of in the Tier-1 category; and generally receive very competitive financial supports in comparison with similar programs in Canada. Naturally, the success of our programs could have not been accomplished without the direct participation of my colleagues at Lazaridis School of Business & Economics and the direct support from the administration. I would like to thank them all for their significant contributions. Supporting programs like ours is always an expensive undertaking. However, I leave confident in the knowledge that our Dean is fully committed to our graduate programs and to ensuring their continued growth and success.

LAZARIDIS SCHOOL PHD & RESEARCH-BASED MASTERS PROGRAMS | BULLETIN | JUNE 2016

EXECUTIVE MASTER’S IN TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Jennifer Smith Achieving success in the commercialization of technology based products and services, whether in a B2B or B2C environment, is an extreme challenge. Moving through the phases of ideation to proof of concept, to minimum viable product to market launch and ultimately, to progressing along the well-known Geoffrey Moore technology adoption lifecycle curve takes passion, persistence, resilience and discipline. In my experience, passion is the easiest to find; persistence is typically fuelled by the passion and resilience is developed by the numerous attempts that don’t go well amongst the successful few. Discipline is the trait that seems most difficult to cultivate and practise with patience. It’s from this discipline perspective that I sought out additional training and learning through the EMTM program. My engineering background had already afforded me well in the understanding of the development of technology and with a depth of understanding about how to ideate; how to be creative; how to solve problems. But what I wanted was more knowledge in how to MANAGE technology: into the market place, within the market and throughout the entire lifecycle. Developing this talent in our organizations is vital to long term success of our businesses. I’ve always believed that talent is what makes great companies and so investing in talent to enable these critical skills is essential. I often get asked about my career ‘journey’ and if it has been difficult to be a female in the technology sector. My view is that everyone needs to take ownership of their careers and to seek the experiences they want most, while pursuing the skills needed to get them there. To me, a healthy workforce must be diverse, as diversity drives broader thinking and promotes more holistic perspectives and ultimately better decision making. We have an ability to propel a future for Canada underpinned in technology. It is our opportunity, right now, to seize and excel. Let’s not let it slip away from us.

Jennifer Smith is the Executive Vice President, Global Market Solutions at Christie Digital Systems and an alumna of the Lazaridis Executive Master’s in Technology Management program. The Lazaridis EMTM has been busy promoting and marketing this unique MSc in Management degree. We have contacted companies throughout Southwestern Ontario and met with prominent business leaders to discuss the program. Through a variety of print and online advertising campaigns, marketing efforts and outreach events, including OCE Discovery and Communitech’s Tech Leadership Conference, we have established ourselves as a well-respected and innovative program in the community. Applications are now open for September 2016. A significant number of eligible candidates have expressed serious interest in the Lazaridis EMTM and we have started to receive applications.
