Research-Based Program Updates

For the 2015-2016 admissions cycle, we have had more than 300 applications so far, and we are pleased that we will be welcoming a very strong cohort this coming Fall. The 2015 PhD intake is the highest in the program’s history as we will be welcoming 15 new students into the program. (Please see accompanying chart). With an increasing number of quality applications to our programs from last year, all of our fields are experiencing healthy growth. Many highly qualified applicants have chosen to join us this coming September, including two SSHRC – Masters Level winners (MSc in Management: OB/HRM and MABE), as well as three incoming PhD students who have won the OGS. It is wonderful to have such high calibre

Our students have been very active in their research and conference presentations, and our current and incoming students have also won more than 20 awards and scholarships in the past few months! Examples include the SSHRC, OGS, and the Travel and Research Award.

David Lewis (Marketing) was invited and attended the inaugural Academy of Marketing Science Doctoral Consortium which was held in Denver, Colorado in May. Hamed Mehrabi (Marketing) was chosen to attend the AIM-AMA Sheth Doctoral Consortium which was held in Dubai in January.

DISSERTATION PROPOSAL DEFENCE

Moussa Obeid (Marketing) had his paper, “How Capabilities Drive the Internationalization Speed and Performance of New Ventures”, accepted at the 2015 European Marketing Academy Conference (EMAC) in Belgium this past May. Dr. Nicole Coviello presented the paper on his behalf.

Jon Kerr (Marketing) successfully defended his dissertation proposal in May.

TRAVEL ASSISTANTSHIP AWARD

Adam Prokop (MSc - SCM) won the Supply Chain Management Association of Ontario Graduate Award.

The following students have received the Spring 2015 Travel Assistantship Award from FGPS:

External Scholarship Winners—Incoming Students Join us in celebrating the tremendous success of the incoming PhD, MSc and MABE students in their scholarship achievements! Peter Fisher (incoming MSc–OB/HRM) was awarded a Master’s Level SSHRC. Peter is a Laurier BBA/BCS Double Degree graduate (business and computer science) and he has been an active member of Dr. Ivona Hideg’s research lab over the last two years. His current research project with Dr. Hideg examines reactions to socioeconomic status-based diversity policies and they are currently working on a journal submission. Peter has also worked with Dr. Laurie Barclay, and will start working on his Master’s Research Project (MRP) in the fall under the supervision of Dr. Chet Robie. Samantha Hancock (incoming PhD–OB/HRM) was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS). Sam is currently completing her MRP under the supervision of Dr. Ivona Hideg, and was a recipient of the SSHRC—Masters Level scholarship for her master’s research. Sam completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Calgary (UC). She is currently examining the effect of a non-native accent English accent and gender on speakers’ workplace outcomes. She has also just received her first revise and resubmit at a peer-reviewed journal on a project she has started as an undergraduate student at UC with Dr. Tom O’Neill. Irene Kim (incoming PhD–OB/HRM) was awarded an OGS. Irene is currently completing her MRP under the supervision of Dr. Jessie Zhan, and currently holds a SSHRC—Masters Level scholarship. Irene is interested in studying the work stress and well-being of employees who work in service positions. Her current research examines when and how serving entitled customers who demand special treatment and extra consideration influence service employees’ well-being. Irene is looking forward to defending her MRP and starting her PhD journey. Amanda Kohler (incoming PhD-Marketing), was awarded an OGS for the 2015-2016 academic year. She is completing her MA in Social Psychology here at Laurier and currently holds a SSHRC scholarship—Masters Level. Amanda was President of WLU’s Graduate Student Association (GSA) from 2014-15 and will be serving as the AVP: Communications for 2015-16. Amanda’s current research interests include: Understanding the consumer’s decision-making process, the symbolic relationship between consumer behaviour and instances of mate guarding and mate poaching, and how close relationships influence consumer behaviour and decision-making for products requiring large investments. Maxine Le Breton (incoming MABE co-op) was awarded a Master’s Level SSHRC. Maxine is a graduate of Laurentian University, and has been accepted to the MABE Co-op option. Maxine has won several academic awards during her undergraduate studies, is on the Dean’s Honour List, was Vice-President of the Laurentian University Economics Student Association, and has worked as a teaching assistant. Her research interests include studying the effects of Research and Development (R&D) expenditures in multinational corporations.
