Dear Friends, 2012-2013 was another remarkable year at COCA, and we gratefully acknowledge that it was your enthusiasm and support that allowed us to truly make a difference in our city and beyond through our programs.

In this report, you will find stories of success, not just COCA’s success, but the collective accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, theatre-goers, supporters and the entire COCA family.

Whether it is one of our graduating pre-professional students heading off to study dance at a prestigious conservatory, a summer camper discovering an unknown talent for illustration, or a business person who has a breakthrough while in a COCAbiz program, the common thread is always the transformative power of the arts.

Because, in addition to developing technical skills in an art form, learning in the arts helps develop individuals who are creative, collaborative, confident and critical thinkers. Simply put, the arts are critical to creating individuals who can thrive in our increasingly complex society, making human creativity the ultimate competitive advantage.

At COCA, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure access to the arts, so everyone, regardless of their financial means or zip code, can nurture their creative aspirations and reach their full potential.

2012-2013 COCA FAMILY THEATRE SERIES

The provided everything from high-energy, highly creative original dance productions to quiet and comforting performances for young children. Presented in the 400-seat Founders’ Theatre, the COCA Family Theatre Series was comprised of both internationally touring shows as well as COCA original productions. The season kicked off with the world-premiere of a dynamic COCA production called hip hOZ, an imaginative re-telling of Dorothy’s journey down the yellow brick road. Created by hip-hop The season kicked off with the sensation, and COCA teaching artist, Anthony “Redd” Williams, hip hOZ featured a talented cast of 19 hip-hop dancers from the region, dazzling choreography and a master mix of contemporary and hip-hop music. The sold out weekend was presented by PNC Arts Alive and was part of the American Arts Experience - St. Louis festival.

John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean, a black-light puppet show, was next in the Family Theatre Series lineup. Created

by Tony Award nominee John Tartaglia (Avenue Q), the October production had a successful run Off-Broadway before beginning its international tour. COCA hosted an accompanying subscriber event “Under the Sea.” Dallas Children’s Theater, one of the most respected producers in the field, presented The True Story of the Three Little Pigs in November. The whimsical musical recounted the popular tale from the wolf’s point of view.

The Little Dancer: 3D, a COCA-produced holiday tradition, used images of three-dimensional art as a backdrop for the ballet dancers. The show was presented again in 2012 with generous underwriting from Mary Strauss.

In the Loop, COCA’s high-energy modern and hip-hop performance, started 2013 off on a high note.

COCAdance, the COCA Hip-Hop Crew and COCA alumni performed work by locally as well as nationally acclaimed choreographers. In January, COCA presented The Mark of Zorro, a one-hour physical theatre adventure from Scotland’s Visible Fictions.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia returned to COCA in February with its adaptation of the award-winning classic Guess How Much I Love You. COCA audiences have cherished Mermaid’s gentle tales that are brought to life by the company’s impressive visuals and signature style. Next, COCA presented The Gruffalo by the inventive theatre troupe Tall Stories. This musical adaptation of the popular picture book landed at COCA after a successful run at the Scottish International Children’s Festival, Warsaw’s English Theatre and Broadway’s New Victory Theater. The talented and comedic jugglers of The Passing Zone closed out the season with their “death-defying” performance Gravity Attacks.

continued to challenge and inspire visitors to look at the The world in a new way, thanks to the extraordinary talents of the curators and artists who live and work primarily in the St. Louis region. The gallery often served as a “learning lab” as well, with visual arts students and summer campers touring the exhibitions and meeting the artists.

Jessica Baran, an art writer and curator, curated the opening exhibition for the 2012-2013 season Ideas of Order.

Four St. Louis artists centered their work on the moment when disparate objects intersect. Representing a variety of media and backgrounds, Gina Alvarez, John Early, Wonder Koch and Peter Pranschke participated in what Baran called, “an exercise in productive irresolution.” James McAnally of Temporary Art Review commented on, “the desire for order within the domestic, the inevitable recursion of uncertainty back into the everyday. Viewing the exhibition feels a bit voyeuristic as if you are overhearing a private conversation; perhaps even as if the artists are accidentally talking to themselves.”

In November, COCA presented the work of East St. Louis artist Edna Patterson-Petty. The talented multimedia artist works primarily in fabric, drawing heavily on the traditions of American quilting, while expanding conventional applications. Generating the Future: Edna Patterson-Petty demonstrated the artist’s unique and contemporary techniques as well as her deep ties to her community.

Memories of the Future: Connie Swinson and Sara Swinson opened in January and was presented in partnership with the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Arts + Healthcare Program. The exhibition featured the work of mother/daughter artists, who were both survivors of serious illness, and the symbiotic relationship between artistic creation and healing.

In March, COCA presented regional artist Meredith Foster, whose work explored the Mississippi delta and surrounding landscape using materials sourced from the local ecosystem. The individual mixed media drawings merged to create a panoramic vista across the gallery alongside topographies made from sifted charcoal, ash and stenciled maps, transformed the walls, representing the Upper Mississippi region.

During the summer, St. Louis-based mural artists Hap Phillips and Nita Turnage created a larger-than-life art installation, WE SEE SAW, which transformed the gallery into a playground for the imagination. Innovative use of structural elements (windows and walls) and layers of imagery prompted visitors of all ages to engage with the artwork and think about the world around them through a new lens.

COCA CLASSES AND CAMPS

COCA’s onsite educational programs are the core of the organization, a mix of recreational and pre-professional classes, workshops and camps that fill the studios and classrooms seven days a week all year round. While dance – ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance, and social and cultural dance – remains COCA’s largest division, COCA is committed to a multidisciplinary menu of options that include vocal music, art & design, acting, directing, fitness, photography, video production and more. “Free at 3” community workshops, musical theatre master classes with professional artists and other workshops, including “Juggle All Night” with The Passing Zone performers from the Family Theatre Series, rounded out the public offerings. Spring Break Camps, offered in March presented arts-rich experiences centered on a global theme.

COCA Summer Arts Camps continued to appeal to students from a wide geographic area, drawing record numbers of children and teenagers from more than 150 zip codes in the summer of 2013.

Especially popular was the Youth Camp Musical, Alice in Wonderland.

Aspiring thespians, ages 9-13, spent full days preparing for the June production in Founders’ Theatre. New in 2013 were iPad camps that challenged campers to use the new technology in creative ways. In a popular new culinary arts camp in July, campers were tasked with conceptualizing a restaurant and then executing many of the necessary tasks required to make that restaurant a reality.

COCA’S EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

At COCA, we place great emphasis on the student-teacher relationship and value a process-based approach in the studio. COCA’s more than 200 teaching artists are highly qualified in their fields, having professional experience in their art forms, and a depth of teaching expertise. Our goal is to inspire students to develop not only skills in arts, but also the artistic process of the artist and the new ways of thinking that quality arts experiences provide.

COCA’s educational approach is rooted in Studio Habits of Mind, a framework developed by a research team from Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. This framework helps to define quality teaching and learning across disciplines, sites and programs and provides a common language for COCA staff, faculty, students and the community.

COCA teaching artists, as well as guest instructors from national organizations including The Kennedy Center, help classroom teachers develop their skills and knowledge to employ practical, arts-based strategies in their classrooms.

Under the new umbrella of COCAedu, COCA continued its commitment to arts education, working in schools and community centers throughout the region providing artist-in-residence programs and after-school arts classes as well as professional development for classroom teachers and arts-integration collaborative residencies through the Interchange program - a consortium of 39 arts and cultural organizations that integrate the arts into curricular studies in urban schools.

ARTS-INTEGRATION COLLABORATIVE RESIDENCIES

COCAedu was busy this year, running residencies and classes throughout the metro area. COCAedu conducted a residency by COCA teaching artist Libby Salvia who led creative movement classes for grades K-3 at City Garden Montessori. During the winter and spring terms, COCA provided visual arts after school classes in partnership with Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Clubs at its North Grand locations and at Hazelwood Southeast Middle School.

COCA offers custom arts residencies to enhance the school curriculum and engage students by tapping into their varied learning styles. COCA can customize the topic and the time frame to suit the school needs.

In May, COCAedu crossed the Mississippi River to provide an immersive arts experience for students at Oliver Parks Middle School in Cahokia, Illinois. The daylong program was kicked off by a performance by Kunama Mtendaji, followed by workshops with some of COCA’s finest instructors in African percussion, Haitian dance, swing dance, hip-hop, sculpture and theatre improv.

COCA’s long-term relationship with Jefferson Elementary in St. Louis continued with after-school and school day classes and performances as well as arts integration residencies. Highlights included workshops based on the October hip hOZ performance at COCA and a field trip to the Millstone Gallery to meet artist Edna Patterson-Petty.

Teaching artists are partnered with classroom teachers to collaboratively plan and implement lessons integrating the arts with core curricular areas.

One highlight of the 2012-2013 program was “Poetry Inside Out” at Mason School of Academic and Cultural Literacy in the St. Louis Public Schools. COCA teaching artist and poet Susan Grigsby worked collaboratively with Monica Soehnlin, a fifth grade teacher at Mason, to guide the students in translating poems from a variety of languages, writing original poems and poetic responses to works of art and, finally, publishing their work. Principal Deb Leto credited the Interchange program with the fifth graders’ improved standardized test scores in communications arts – an even greater accomplishment in light of the fact that one third of Mason’s students are English Language Learners and more than 20 different languages are spoken at the school.

Five St. Louis Public Schools participated in Interchange (Jefferson, Mason, Froebel, Lyon@Blow, Henry) in addition to the school districts of Normandy (Bel Nor), Ferguson/Florissant (Airport Elementary), Maplewood/ Richmond Heights (MRH Elementary) and University City (Flynn Park, Jackson Park, University City High School).

Professional development opportunities for classroom teachers was a major focus of the Interchange program in 2012-2013. A total of 224 teachers, artists and arts educators participated in professional development workshops including, “Interactive Approach to Monet’s Water Lilies,” led by Mike Murawski of the Saint Louis Art Museum and COCA teaching artist Matthew Von Doran. Interchange conducted customized professional development sessions at Jefferson Elementary in St. Louis and Flynn Park Elementary in University City. The Regional Arts Commission was the site of Interchange’s three-day Summer Institute in St. Louis, “Developing a Foundation for Arts Integration.” Sean and Melanie Layne of The Kennedy Center led workshops on using drama for classroom management and to increase student comprehension and visual art writing. The Laynes also led an institute in Springfield, Missouri in partnership with Springfield Public Schools, Community Foundation of the Ozarks, Missouri Arts Council and Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

“Interchange has had a huge impact on our 5th grade communication arts Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) test scores. 79% of our fifth grade students achieved a proficient or advanced score on this year’s MAP test, which far surpasses anything students in the St. Louis Public Schools have done before. The 5th grade teacher is an excellent teacher, but I also credit the support she received from Interchange teaching artist Susan Grigsby for the impressive scores. At the final presentations, students who hardly ever speak stood up and proudly read the poetry they wrote with Susan.”

PRE-PROFESSIONAL DANCE DIVISION

COCA’S is broadly structured into three distinct programs – The Talent Identified Program (TIP), The Honors Program and Student Dance Companies (Ballet Eclectica, COCAdance and the COCA Hip-Hop Crew).

In 2012-2013, TIP was comprised of 34 students, in grades 3-5, selected for their motivation and potential to succeed in COCA’s rigorous training program. TIP students receive 100% financial assistance from COCA and may “graduate” into the Honors Young Artist Program.

The COCA Honors Program offers individualized career counseling, mentorship and evaluation from faculty, master classes and outings to professional dance productions. Dancewear, transportation, ACT tutoring, audition assistance and scholarships are available to make participation in this rigorous program possible regardless of family income. Fourteen seniors graduated from the Honors Dance Program in 2013 and all of them advanced to college or began careers as professional artists.

Graduates headed to Boston Conservatory, University of Missouri, Washington University in St. Louis and others to pursue majors from anthropology to dance to pharmaceutical studies. Two students joined professional companies - American Repertory Ballet/Princeton Ballet in Princeton, New Jersey, and the ImmaBEAST Dance Company in Los Angeles.

COCA’s student dance companies were busy this year with a variety of performance and learning opportunities. Highlights included Ballet Eclectica’s production of The Little Dancer, plus residencies and master classes with Alvin Ailey’s Antonio Douthit-Boyd, Kirven Douthit-Boyd and Alicia Graf Mack and Milwaukee Ballet’s Rolando Yanes. COCAdance was featured in the COCA Family Theatre Series production of In the Loop and Continuing the Legacy during Black History Month. The HipHop Crew performed in hip hOZ and In the Loop. All three companies performed in the Spring Repertory Concert: TRIumphant. Other opportunities included master classes and summer intensives with guest teachers such as Endalyn Taylor from Dance Theatre of Harlem and Jessica Taylor from DAMAGEDANCE.

100% of Pre-Professional seniors advanced to college and/or a professional arts career.

In January, COCA hosted the Regional Summer Dance Intensive Auditions for its students and other advanced dance students from studios throughout the region.

Participating programs hoping to recruit local students included Princeton Ballet School, Milwaukee Ballet School, Louisville Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet, National Ballet Academy of Denver, Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School, Dance Theatre of Harlem, The Ailey School, and Joffrey Workshop (Texas).

COCA THEATRE COMPANY

The (CTC) was actively engaged in performances and additional learning opportunities throughout the year. The fall performance of Quilters, directed by Christopher Limber, combined music, dance movement and scenes of dramatic intensity in the Anheuser-Busch Black Box Theatre. The story, by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, celebrates the lives of pioneer women and had successful runs on Broadway and at the Edinburgh Festival. The production included professional adult actors in concert with the CTC students.

Roald Dahl’s classic James and the Giant Peach was the winter CTC production. Directed by COCA’s Josh Routh, it was brought to life using digital imagery, whimsical costumes and broad comedic performances. Little Nemo in Slumberland, co-directed by COCA’s Director of Arts Education, Shawna Flanigan and Routh, was a challenging endeavor that charged the student cast with creating the story, writing and performing the work. Performed in April, the play incorporated character study, clowning, aerial work, unicycling and other circus skills and played to sold-out houses in the Anheuser-Busch Black Box Theatre.

Director Grace Austin and musical director Phil Woodmore returned for another summer of musical theatre at the helm of the CTC production of In the Heights. Supported by the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, the 9th annual COCA Summer Musical tapped the singing, dancing and acting talents of 43 high school students from throughout the St. Louis area.

COCA’s Lee Nolting and alumnus Christopher Page provided choreography Nominated for SEVEN for the large and talented cast that performed this Tony Award-winning blockbuster with style and spirit. COCA’s production was nominated for Best Performance Awards seven Best Performance Awards by Arts for Life, a St. Louis organization that supports St. Louis community theatres. The show was nominated for Best Youth Musical Production, performers received nominations in all four individual categories - leading actor and actress and supporting actor and actress - and Zach Erhardt was honored outright with the award for Best Youth Musical Performance for his portrayal of “Usnavi.”

IN THE HEIGHTS

Also, this year COCA launched the CTC Ensemble, a recognition program for the most engaged participants in theatre and voice. Ensemble members were treated to cultural events in the area including Les Miserablés at the Fox Theatre and Next to Normal at New Line Theatre, and they participated in a two-day vocal master class with New York-based performer Michael Beatty. Six of the inaugural season members graduated from high school in 2013 and all of them advanced to college, many to pursue degrees in theatre from prestigious programs.

Allegro, COCA’s student vocal performance company, presented two well-received concerts in the winter and spring, and performed at several private events throughout the community, including The Annual Veiled Prophet Ball in December and the Peabody Energy Leaders in Education event in April.

COCA is the common thread among a group of incredibly different and unique students from many different backgrounds who all happen to have a passion for creating art. , COCA’s business training division. The growing 2012-2013 was a busy year for program served more than 2,000 people representing more than 300 companies in the St. Louis region through custom corporate engagements and innovative public programs.

COCAbiz executed 12 in-depth custom corporate engagements for companies including BJC HealthCare, Centene Corporation, Edward Jones, McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc., Nestle Purina, Wells Fargo Advisors and others. This work included training a large group of information technology employees using the proven Artful Speaker workshop. Through articulation, delivery, visual communication and storytelling the participants learned ways to deliver more understandable, and engaging presentations.

In a spin on its standard corporate engagements, COCAbiz embarked on a new partnership to educate future executives at the source. In the spring of 2013, COCAbiz began working with the John Cook School of Business at Saint Louis University, piloting several programs set to be incorporated into standard MBA curriculum in the fall of 2013. The program was established to develop more well-rounded business leaders who combine analytical and technical business skills with authentic, creative leadership capabilities.

May’s “SPARK: Putting Creativity to Work” was COCA’s third Business Creativity Conference. Highlights of the two-day conference included keynotes by Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action; Scott Belsky, co-founder and CEO of Behance; Debbie Millman, design executive and author; and Neil Stevenson of IDEO. Creativity Lab breakout sessions allowed participants to build competencies in leadership, collaboration, communication and ideation through arts-based experiences like “Sketchbook Discoveries” and “Productive Critique.”

This year, COCAbiz hosted two bizSESSIONs - guest lectures by the most creative minds in the world of design, innovation and business. In February, Scott Doorley and Scott Witthoft, co-directors of the Environmental Collaborative at Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school) presented “Designing for Creative Collaboration.” The co-authors of Make Space: How to Set the Stage for Creative Collaboration shared thoughts on designing environments that encourage collaboration and fuel innovative thinking.

In July, Claire Diaz Ortiz, who leads social innovation and philanthropy at Twitter, presented a bizSESSION on the TWEET model -- a framework used to make organizations stronger through the use of Twitter.

Other public programs included bizLABs - experiential workshops - and bizTHINKs – networking evenings with a quick taste of a COCAbiz experience. Highlights included, May’s bizLAB “Brand You: Reflect and Express,” designed to help participants improve their personal brand in the office, and the January bizTHINK, “Relevance Redefined,” during which prominent theatre professionals and a business facilitator led the group on how to maintain truth and authenticity while shaping communications for diverse audiences.

Silver and sparkle were out in full force in November for , the second annual recognition event for members of the Richard Baron Leadership Circle.

FLAME celebrated COCA’s milestone 25th anniversary with an exclusive original production and reception. In 2012-2013, the Richard Baron Leadership Circle included 115 member households and corporate donors who contributed a total of more than $500,000.

FLAME honorees included Jennifer and Tom Hillman and COCA Board President Cheryl Holman, who were inducted into COCA’s Circle of Luminaries. That Circle represents those individuals or couples whose cumulative contributions total $1 million or more. Peabody Energy was recognized for the first gift to the COCA 25th Anniversary Impact Fund, which seeded an organization-changing capitalization effort. Emerson was awarded the 2012 Ferring Award for Philanthropy and Karen Kotner was recognized for her years of dedication to COCA with the Newell S. “Jim” Knight Service Award.

Four COCA alumni were honored as new additions to COCA’s Distinguished Alumni Recognition Wall, including Broadway performer Brandon Bieber, Lesley Garrison of Mark Morris Dance Group, Christopher Page of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble and Jessica Taylor of DAMAGEDANCE. COCA alumni, now dancing professionally, and current members of COCA’s Honors Program performed specially-commissioned dance and musical theatre numbers. A highlight was the finale “Here We Come,” choreographed by Taylor, which featured students and alumni dancing together in celebration of COCA’s 25 years and in anticipation of its bright future.

COCAcabana 2013

A sold out crowd of nearly 650 business and community leaders found out “what happens when the lights go down” at COCA’s popular spring fundraiser, COCAcabana: After Dark on Friday, April 26, 2013. COCA’s only annual fundraiser exceeded organizers expectations by more than $100,000, bringing in more than $800,000, thanks, in part, to the most successful auction in COCAcabana history.

The evening’s festivities, included a VIP “Black most successful auction Carpet” arrival, a cocktail reception, a live auction in COCAcabana history hosted by Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, dinner under a giant outdoor tent and dancing to the spins of DJ Reggie. During the auction, COCA’s Hip-Hop Crew delighted guests with an original performance choreographed by Anthony “Redd” Williams.

All proceeds benefitted COCA’s education programs. COCA annually provides more than $800,000 in arts programs at no cost in low-income schools and more than 400 scholarships for students to participate in COCA on-site programs. Accounting for nearly 25 percent of COCA’s annual contributed revenue, COCAcabana is crucial to continuing this outreach.

I am so pleased with my daughter’s success in the Pre-Professional Program. She spends at least five days a week at COCA and I see a marked improvement in her dance. She’s having fun and learning so much by participating in the dance concerts and masterclasses and forming bonds with the other students and her instructors. I know that her dance schedule keeps her focused and we can see an improvement in her school work as well.
