WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? Perspectival projection is created by the intersection made by the plan and the elevation. Both of these recede into the vanishing point, otherwise known as the ‘eye’. In that sense, a pyramid with a well defined apex is manifested in the combination of both the plan and the elevation. From there, the ‘visual rays’ are drawn out, the plan determines the width and the elevation de-termines the height of the figure.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space?

Homogenous space is created space from construction with the points within the space being of the same or similar structure throughout. When drawn from these points, similar figures can be drawn in all directions. Homogenous space is not infinite, it has a defined boundary directed by the limits of our perception.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective One: This view has the best angle for the columns to act as divisions in the scene. After the cropping based upon page size, the centre column was used as the divider.

Perspective Two: The reason for this camera angle to be chosen was the depth and simplitcity of the framing of the scene. The gaps in between provide areas to give more story and dimension to scene.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective One: I used the column as the basis of the division of two worlds witin the desert. The sun was used to as another source of light and the defining feature of the side of the story. The natural imagery, the symbolic city carrying camel and belly dancers give the sense of joy and freedom.

Perspective Two: Serving as a contrast to the previous bright and lively scene of the first perspective. There is conflict and a heavy darkness overshadowing the entire scene accenuated by the fight on the left hand side of the scene. Clouds are used to restrict the open space in the background for a more constricted and claustrophobic feeling.

WEEK 10 READING: PRACTICE ARCHITECTURE

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic practice relies heavily on the authenticity that the author has taken into account when interacting with the object in question. Allographic practice can be reproduced and does not need to direct interaction with the object. It does differ in authenticity due to the lack of interaction yet the basis and structure is not affected. Allographic practices also require notation in some circumstances.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? Architects require new representational techniques due to the need for a connection to the technological space time which is more apparent in architecture. It also needs to design not just the surface of building or city, but more into the structure. Traditional representations are not enough to map the detail of the works anymore, there needs to be a better notation system in order to fully give the intricacy of the design.

The isometric uses different line weights to distinguish the importance of elements. The symbols have been kept simple in order to be recognisable to the reader. Some colour has been used to differentiate movement across different surfaces as well. The angle hasn’t changed much of the overall movement of Marco Polo but does cause some issues with placement of symbols.
