Keyhole Peepshow

Over the course of a year, I collaborated closely with writer Mary Steurer and the women of Keyhole Peepshow to document their journeys of balancing daily life with their involvement in burlesque. Through numerous conversations, a project rooted in reciprocity emerged, transcending mere performance to delve into the unseen forces shaping women’s lives: body image, motherhood, sensuality, and female community. It was paramount to me to demonstrate the effervescence they carried on the stage was also present in their daily lives, so I used natural light to simulate them glowing in the stage light. What initially began as a collection of still images evolved into a multimedia endeavor aimed at amplifying the voices and experiences of the group’s mothers, thereby honoring their profound intricacies.

Justyn Obert poses in the kitchen of Monte Henrie’s sober living house in Casper, a place that helps men hold each other accountable, be vulnerable, and get back on their feet. Obert reflects on his time there in a journal entry: “I didn’t want to write about the horrible things I’ve done to people or the lengths I’ve gone to in order to get high, because it feels like just another addict’s story. But the outcome of every addict’s story isn’t the same. Most of us will overdose or commit suicide. If you’re an addict like me, you don’t have many options. This time, I chose me and my kids.”
