Rihanna Rated R advert Rihanna has used a main image to promote her album, emphasising herself as the main selling point, which is common of mainstream artists. This is also the same image as the one on her actual album cover.so gives the audience an idea of what they will actually see when buying the product.

She has used the band copy to show different songs that the album will include, she has used this as a selling point as these are her most popular songs, and so if the audience like those songs they are most likely going to enjoy other songs within the album.

Rihanna has included her name and title of the product, with her name placed in the middle, in plain black and white to go with the theme, this is to make sure that it stands out to the audience, and will highlight who the artist is as, like I said before she is the selling point. We can also see the use of typography in the corner of the advert, this ‘R’ almost looks 3D and is a trademark design so can help the association of the artist, with other products.

She has used an action line to tell her audience other websites they can purchase the album and some of her other products, that may synergise with her album, for example tour dates. It is also a way of interacting with the audience and marketing more, as people are able to go online to access other things.

Rihanna Rated R advert What is being advertised? From the image of the ad we can see that her new album Rated R is being advertised we can see this with the use of the action line, giving additional information on the product for example the additional songs featured in the video. Also along with the artist name underneath she has ‘The new album’ written to make it clear. She is also advertising herself as a personality, as we can see a different image than what she normally portrays which is quite dark, to create a new look for herself. How is the artist and there music being represented/ is stereotyping being used? Rihanna has chosen to take on a more darker mysterious persona, giving an impression of the type of music that will be featured in her album. We can see that she is wearing dark eye make up and black lipstick connoting a more gothic theme to her album. The colour of the album image is in greyscale to keep the colours dark, and we see her wearing a black leather top and rings that connect to each finger connoting a prison type dark feel to her music. Also the body copy shown on the bottom of the ad are written quite big and in red, connoting the image of blood which relates to the subject of ‘Russian roulette’ and ‘Hard’ which makes her song quite aggressive and intimidating. The title of the album creates a stereotype that the songs are going to include more mature themes.

Who is the advert targeting? How do you know? The advert is targeting a female audience, as normally she is quite seductive with her album covers, giving a softer more feminine appeal, maybe attracting men to buy it, for women, or themselves. However she is covered up and looks quite dark, and this would appeal more to a female audience, as they would know the type of direction she is looking to take her music. What message does the advert give to the audience about the album? The impression that I get as part of the audience is that she is creating a new look to open up a bigger audience, the ‘parental advisory’ label in the corner of the album tells me that she may be appealing to an older audience as there will be swearing ect. included throughout the album. The song names suggest that she has already had two major hits, and would influence me to want to buy the album to listen to more of her songs. The song titles are also quite strong and serious suggesting the tone of her music.
