Subtle Significance
Located at 5877 W San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles, this 40,000 square-foot pallatative care center seeks to support four different user groups: residents, community, staff, and support. The project seeks to engage with questions about lonliness, isolation, and solitude, and how these feelings can be expressed through the built environment.

investigation
The investigation began with a culmination of various photographs, in which students were asked to engage with the world through heightened observations. The result of these findings were a collection of photogrpahs, all linked together through their indecipherable use of body language. Body language is often regarded as being more revealing of one’s feelings and emotions over any spoken word. The value of body language can greatly impact the way one recieves and percieves communication. The investigation then continued to examine how a slight shift in thse gestures impacts the entire read of the photograph. The subtle shift in these nonverbal gestures results in a large impact.

storyboard
It is not the result of giant gestures, but the culmination of subtle, small moves, that result in a large reaction. By exploring the nature of body language, one can communicate through unspoken words. It is through the study of hand language that the relationship and boundaries of these different programmatic relathionships can be be explored. This project seeks to normalize the blending of different programmtic elements through subtle shifting. The result of these small gestures is intermingling between programmatic spaces that were once thought to be seperated. It is through this intermingling, that we can begin to explore and redefine the care needed at the end of ones life, for value is found through connection and interpersonal relationships.

Bargesia
The site is set just off the coast of Blaisdell Park, located within Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii. The project itself would be part of a housing initiative in collaboration with the US Navy, in order to initiate a floating urban development plan. The incentive comes in response to the increasing problem of coastal erosion as result of global warming. The project aims to serve those who do not have the finacial means to relocate back to the mainland, by giving them a new reality of lliving on the water.

storyboard
Hawaiian culture is deeply rooted in a strong connection between humans and nature. The unspoken understanding of being able to care for both the environment and one another is deeply valued. The proposed urban development is seen to be an interconnected community. The structure sits just off the coast, and is only accessible by foot, creating a deeply intimate space that facilitates communal interaction between one another. The intersection of levels, through open air spaces, further heightens this connection, as the traditonal style of private living is reimagined.

materials
In order to allow the urban development to float, while still being able to withstand the weather conditions for years to come, the floating device was cast out of concrete barges. Concrete vierendeel trusses are used as the primary method of support in order to allow each level to stack atop one another, while still allowing flexibility of load bearing. One key aspect to this design was ensuring that the traditional Hawaiian experience of blending interior and exterior spaces together was withheld with the utilization of many open-air greenery spaces. For the units themselves, the exterior consits of a brushed metal facade, with the interior strictly consisting of a warm cedar. The contrast between the cold, rustic concrete and the warm wood is to delineate between exterior and interior.

Allyson Felix Sports Medicine Center
The Allyson Felix Sports Medicine Center is a mixed-use Outpatient Surgery Center and is located within the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The project is seen to be centered around the field of sports medicine, and is set to offer a range of different services including: diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation, and sports performance programs. The project itself is 150,000 squarefeet, and is centered around the sport of Track and Field.

storyboard
Allyson Felix has been known to talk openly about the struggles of dealing with nerves on such a large stage, and ways in which she has been able to combat this. She discusses how praying and meditation has helped her to find peace in such a chaotic environment , a concept in which we focused on for our building. We strived to create a space in which we hope all users can come in order to find tranquility within their daily lives. Research shows that a direct connection with nature is a large factor in helping to create a relaxing environment for patients, in an attempt to distract one from their current state of discomfort.
As a result, the focusof this project is on creating a landmass building that works with the existing environment as much as possible , in order to blend the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Through this discovery, a central circulation path was created to be a representation of the sport, emulating this simulation of running around a track, in an attempt to rotate around the existing topography so one is able to experience a view from any location within the building.
FILTERLIGHT

sustainable
The building is made up of four main materials: heavy mass timber, a system of ribbon windows, white stucco, and tilt up concrete. The choice of material comes from the idea of wanting to blend the building into the existing site as closely as possible in an attempt to create a serene natural environment from every angle. Because the lowest level of the building is submerged into the topography, it creates the opportunity to have a green roof along this subterannean floor, accessible along the main entries into the site on ground level. The use of heavy mass timber furthe emphasizes the buildings integration within the site. The central track is seen to be entirely encased in glass, allowing for traversers to be emersed within the landscape from all angles.

methodology
The project is centered around this enclosed system of ramps , circulating along the three levels, with a three story void spanning in the middle. The program of the building itself flanks the exterior of the circulation ramp, in an attempt to enclose the ramps within the building, to emulate the idea of the building as a stadium, with the central view being into the main void filled with the existing natural landscape. In order to make the ramps functional, east side of the building is situated +12 feet above the west side. This projection upward noty only allows the ramp to function, but creates a distinct seperation between both sides of the building, in which the east side holds the more public programming, and the west side is seen to be the location of the more private program elements.

"There
is mounting evidence, from dozens and dozens of researchers, that nature has benefits for both physical and psychological human wellbeing...And the sense of connection you have with the natural world seems to contribute to happiness even when you're not physically immersed in nature."
