A LETTER FROM ASHLEY
As we begin to look back at 2020, we are forced to evaluate what in the world just happened. It feels like we have been shaken to the core- in need of an anchor. This unease has brought to the forefront that grounding and comfort cannot be found in external things. If we are keeping it a buck, before 2020, the hard questions were easily avoided as we had the option to pay attention to so many other things.
The pandemic forced us to take a look at what really mattered. Our closest relationships were put under a microscope. We were forced to ask who we were without all the “stuff.” Who are we without the parties, going into the office, or to the bar? Who are we without sporting events? Things began to shift at some point, and that shift brought us to the only question left, Who Am I? As we explore Sacred Spaces, you are encouraged to begin building a connection of who- and what- you truly are. One of the easiest ways to start this process of finding that space is by finding a comfortable seated position, setting a timer for five minutes, and just breathing in and out through your nose.
Another simple exercise is to lay on the floor, place one hand on your stomach and the other on your heart, set your five-minute timer, and just breathe until the time runs out. Sacred space is a container within you where you get to choose what is needed to create a connection to who you are that serves your highest good. My hope is that you will be inspired by this issue to create a sacred space for yourself, and so no matter what the world brings your way, you have all you need to thrive.

Seeing Yourself And Your Culture:
The Importance Of The Items In Your Home

Founder: ÓYÁ ÁBĒÓ
(pronounced o-yaa a-beh-ow)

It’s hygge season. For those who don’t know what that means, hygge is the Danish and Norwegian word for ultimate coziness, especially in the colder months when the cooler temperatures force us to spend more time indoors. It’s a practice that dates back many years in Scandinavian countries and has recently been co-opted by the interior-design-loving people of the internet. Hygge is a whole lifestyle of flannel, scented candles, cozy blankets, hot cocoa, and lounging like you live in a gingerbread house. This practice takes on a new meaning this year, given that most of us have been quarantined inside since the beginning of the pandemic, spending time only with our nuclear families. We will continue to be inside for the foreseeable winter season, therefore,
it is important to fully embrace the spirit of coziness, warmth, and liveliness in our homes. I love the spirit of hygge, yet when I think of the things that put me at ease in my home, it isn’t flannel or mid-century Scandinavian furniture. Rather, I need colors and patterns galore, that remind me of banana trees, the everlasting sunshine of my home country Nigeria, and the bustling rhythm of the city where I grew up, Lagos. If I am to embrace the art of ultimate coziness, I want a candle that smells like guava or tangerines, a kitchen where jollof rice is always on the stove, gorgeous batik patterns on my dinner table, and blankets that are oozing with color. This need to see my culture represented in my home lead to the inception of my home goods brand--ÓYÁ ÁBĒÓ.
Here are a few tips on how to make your home just a little cozier these coming winter months:

MAKE YOUR SOFA MORE CHEERFUL
Have a regular-shmegular Ikea sofa that could do with a nice dose of personality? Dress it up with Indigo Triangle cushions and an Adeola throw. All that green and blue makes me swoon.
MAKE WEEKDAY DINNERS FESTIVE
Folks often think of table settings as something for fancy events, but you don’t need a big occasion to have a beautiful table setting. I designed many of the table linens to be used daily. They are very durable, and can be tossed in the washer after. Plus, you get extra good human points for using an environmentally friendly alternative to paper napkins.
MIX AND MATCH
People often think you have to match all the items on your table, but there is no hard and fast rule about this- at least not in my book. You can totally have fun with it! I love the playful nature of the Eyo O napkins. You can use each color alone in a 4 piece set or mix it up with the Lagos Party set. durable, and can be tossed in the washer after. Plus, you get extra good human points for using an environmentally friendly alternative to paper napkins.

Kurl Talk:
The Moment I fell in Love with My Natural Hair
By Khijanique GodleyIremember growing up, begging my mother for a relaxer, because I wanted to fit in with my classmates. Despite her unwillingness, I considered having a friend relax my hair behind my mother’s back. Saving myself from the whipping of a lifetime, I stuck to what I knew - no jam, no smooth edges, just a ‘nappy’ ponytail. I felt the sharp words of criticism about my coils as early as middle school. I received the message loud and clear – “Black hair is not good hair.” Once I got to college, I started making my own hair decisions, and to be quite honest, I went crazy. I shuffled between hair colors, haircuts, and protective styles. Finally, after growing tired of constant change, I did the big chop. I cut my hair and decided to grow out my natural coils. Falling in love with my hair did not happen immediately, mainly because of the trauma I experienced growing up with natural hair.
Discouraged by the reactions I received with my big chop, I wore extensions and wigs to hide my natural hair. I made a promise to ditch the protective styles once my hair grew out of the “awkward stage.” I failed to notice that hiding my hair for long periods denied me the chance of actually learning how to care for my hair. Between limited hair products and a lack of media representation, Black women continuously get the short end of the stick in hair care. If a black woman was featured anywhere, it usually features them with a looser curl pattern instead of coarse, type 4 hair, like my own. Like many Black women, I wanted to look beautiful and feel represented. My “Ah-Ha” Hair Moments... My life changed once I learned my hair porosity. Knowing my hair porosity taught me how
well my hair retained or absorbed moisture. I no longer needed to question whether I should use heat when deep conditioning because the answer would always be yes. Shout out to my low porosity girls! Once I developed a consistent wash & deep conditioning routine, I noticed that my hair became softer, shinier, and easier to manage - something I never thought was possible with my type of hair. My hair regimen also benefited when I stopped hoarding products with harmful ingredients. I realized that just because someone on YouTube promoted a hair brand did not mean that I should run to the beauty supply store. Instead, I began to focus on using what I already had and then purchased new products as I saw fit. Researching about the ingredients a product contains is essential for healthy hair care. I learned to refer to the saying, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” That quote seamlessly plays out in many areas of our lives.
Our desire to empty our wallets to hoard products that we know nothing about is unnecessary. The number one key for me is remembering to handle my hair with the same care and patience as I do in other areas of my life. These small changes in my mindset led me to where I am now on my hair journey. I reduced my use of protective styles to a minimum, and I often wear my natural hair freely. It may require more time, but it saves me a lot of money in the long run. My hair care routine is pivotal because the journey it took to get here almost ripped me from my self-confidence completely. For a long time, my hair was connected to a false idea of beauty and femininity. Two unfortunate truths for black women
are, how we choose to wear our hair dictates how people treat us, and wearing certain styles can keep us away from opportunities. Hair discrimination laws are just being passed in 2020. Non-confirming to the unspoken rule of wearing my hair straight to interviews or special events is one of the many ways I choose to love myself loudly. My view: Rest in peace to every job I didn’t get because of how I naturally presented myself in the workspace, and to the men that missed out on me because they prefer women with straight hair. The way I chose to wear my hair is no longer up for debate. The people who love and accept my confidence while rocking my natural coils are the only people I need.
It’s The Reassurance For Me… The beautiful thing about my relationship with my natural hair is that it’s so much more than JUST hair for me. It is love, it builds community, and it is black culture. Black women are not conditioned to love our natural curls, so when I see other black women with their natural hair out in public, I make it a point to compliment them. A simple “I see you, Sis!” is likely to make someone’s day. Having several people tell me that I am their “hair goals” finally made me realize that I had a passion for hair. This passion is what led me to KurlsByKhij, my hair blog on
Instagram. KurlsbyKhij is a platform where I inspire curly confidence through my hair diary. Whether you are just beginning your hair care journey or far ahead on your journey, I make space for all black women and young girls. I focus heavily on promoting black-owned businesses while I engage in commentary with my newfound curly friends. Although I am relatively new to the blogging community, my following grew rather quickly. I think that it’s simply because I stand tall in being myself. My natural hair is my staple. It is a visible representation of my personality— luxuriant, dense, and ever-changing.

for a SunKissed Glow HEALTH HACKS
By Jessica Jade
Ten years ago, I developed circular, itchy, and painful eczema. When my dermatologist prescribed steroid creams, my skin became so sensitive to the sun, I wore turtlenecks an entire NYC Summer. I quickly fell into a deep depression, stopped dating, and hid from society! One Sunday evening, while on a call with my great-grandmother, Mama Teresa, I shared how much I was suffering. I told her about how I scratched myself to sleep every
night, no longer looked people in the eye, and covered myself up in public.
Skin Coach Jessica Jade lives by this soul purpose, “Empower Women of Color to Joyously Heal Their Skin.” Read on to learn how her Abuelita encouraged her wellness brand SunKiss Organics, along with helpful tips to keep your skin supple all Winter.
Mama Teresa is not the type of woman who believes in accepting that which she cannot change. She sprang into action recommending ingredients that might heal my skin- mango butter and jojoba oil to lock in moisture, and honey and turmeric for their anti-inflammatory benefits. Formulating products soon became our favorite pastime! From that day on, with her guidance, I began crafting skincare that not only healed my eczema but empowers others to also heal their skin. When I launched SunKiss, I did so with the promise that my skincare would be non-toxic, organic, and most importantly, effective!
01
Without it, your body can’t properly remove toxins. Many times acne, dryness, oiliness, dark eye circles, fine lines, and even dark spots are caused by dehydration. Increased water consumption will reinvigorate your skin! I use an 84 oz water bottle, and it’s changed my life.

Now, I have put together this Ultimate Winter Skincare Guide to help you heal your skin and keep the ash away all year long!
Before we get into my juicy skin tips, let’s talk about why your skin is dry, ashy, and flaky! In the winter, your skin goes through Transepidermal Water Loss. T.W.L. is when the skin’s water evaporates. T.W.L. can be caused by simple everyday actions like showering with hot water, cozying up next to your heater, or going for a morning stroll in the dry winter air. Here are 10 tips to keep your skin healthy, soft, and ultra-hydrated!
02 DRINK ALL THE WATER!

LET’S KEEP IT 100% REAL- YOU KNOW THE HUGE IMPACT YOUR DIET HAS ON YOUR SKIN.
The truth is no matter what you put on your face, your skin will not heal if your diet isn’t nutrientdense. Think of it this way, if it isn’t nourishing you, it’s poisoning you. Focus less on what you can’t eat and more on what you can! Eat foods that are package-free, colorful, and high in Vitamin A, C, D & B, like salmon, leafy greens, green tea, berries, avocados, watermelon, mangos, lemons, oranges, sweet potato, nuts, seeds, etc.
RELIEVING STRESS IS A KEY COMPONENT TO HEALTHY SKIN!
According to research, stress causes chemical responses in our bodies that make skin sensitive and reactive. Cuts and scars are hard to heal when the body is under stress. Stress can trigger psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. Stress management techniques, such as breathing exercises, or meditation can alleviate acne, rosacea, and other skin ailments! Meditation is known to decrease negative emotions, reduce stress, and also targets chronic underlying issues that trigger skin conditions. Meditation also adds oxygen to the skin, improving the overall health of your cells! This boost of oxygen then rejuvenates your skin brightening your complexion, minimizing fine lines.

DIY ACNE REMEDY!
Do-it-yourself recipes are a staple in my home for acne control, hydration, & locking in moisture!
Try this 3-ingredients mask recipe:
- 1 TBSP Green Tea water
- 1 TBSP Manuka honey
- .5 TSP of Turmeric powder.

IF I OFFER YOU ANY ADVICE FOR HEALTHIER SKIN, IT’S SLEEP… P ERIOD!
Sleeping 7-8 hours a night may improve dark under-eye circles, dull, uneven skin, premature wrinkles, rough or textured skin, and more! My tips for better sleep? Shut your devices down 60-minutes before bedtime. Practice breath work, or meditation, for 2-5 minutes. Take a warm shower with aromatherapy. Prepare a sleeping tonic with Organic Olivia Sleep Juice, Four Sigmatic Chill Cacao Mix & So Delicious Coconut Milk. Warm it up, stir well and sip 30-minutes before bed for maximum benefits.
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, apply generously to face, allow sitting for 10 minutes, and washing off with warm water.
Green tea has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that prevent acne and other skin infections. Manuka Honey is antibacterial and supports acne treatment and prevention. It’s full of antioxidants, extremely moisturizing, and soothing. Turmeric powder is a powerful antioxidant that lightens dark spots and leaving you with a supple glow!

USE A CLEANSER THAT WILL NOT STRIP YOUR SKIN OF ITS NATURAL OILS.
This means first applying an oil cleanser to dry skin rather than a liquid cleanser. The SunKiss Rose Oil Cleansing Balm latches onto and removes oil, sweat, makeup, and SPF from your skin! Best of all? It clears your pores, prevents breakouts, and makes pores appear smaller! Use the Rose Oil Cleansing Balm first and then follow up with a liquid-cleanser of your choice.
DRENCH YOUR SKIN WITH HYDRATING TONERS
The SunKiss Aloe Rose Toner! Hydrating toners balance your skin’s oil production and pH levels. Toners like the Aloe Rose Toner contain rose water and aloe vera, which also brightens your skin and lightens dark spots while minimizing acne and the appearance of your pores..

08 09
SHOW YOUR BODY SOME LOVE!

APPLY FACIAL OIL AS A MOISTURIZER TO DAMP SKIN
To lock in the hydrating ingredients from your toner and masks. Facial oils prevent toxins and other environmental pollutants from latching onto your skin. They are packed with antioxidants, providing a healthy glow and allow for aging gracefully. In moderation, facial oils can also reduce oil production, making a great addition to your acne regimen. I begin with the SunKiss Organics Carrot Seed Facial Oil because it contains carrot seed oil, sea buckthorn oil, and jojoba oil! All of which is super moisturizing and incredible for the skin. If your skin is naturally drier, I’d opt for the Rose Hip Facial Oil. If your skin is naturally oily or acne-prone, the Tamanu Facial Oil is for you!
Sometimes we are so focused on facial health that we forget to care for our bodies. The skin on our body also gets dry, itchy, and flaky in the winter. There are simple ways to keep skin healthy, soft, and supple. I recommend weekly scrubs accompanied by warm, not hot, water in the shower or bath. My personal favorites are the SunKiss Organics Mocha Scrub or Mint Scrub to sloth off dead skin. The Mocha Scrub is for those who love chocolate and coffee! It smells exactly like a mocha latte and uses raw cacao powder, a powerful antioxidant to gently scrub away dry skin. The Mint Scrub is excellent for those with muscle aches! It combines dead sea salt, which is high in magnesium, and grape seed oil to leave behind stress and dry skin.

10

MOISTURIZING IMMEDIATELY AFTER A SHOWER IS A MUST.
Do so while skin is damp and pores are open, and your skin will better absorb the ingredients in your body balm. The Sunkiss Organics Lemon Body Balm is perfect for the wintertime! It contains a combination of shea butter, coconut oil, and uplifting essential oils that relieve stress and reinvigorate the skin. The Lemon Body Balm is my go-to when I’m suffering from Seasonal Depressive Disorder because it’s citrusy scent immediately reminds me of warmer weather and brighter days.

Juice Recipes to Keep Your Body Flowin’ and Glowin’
By Whitney Miner, Certified Holistic Nutritionist

I love juicing! I drink about two 16oz fresh juices a day at least 5-6 days a week. Drinking fresh juice super boosts your intake of vitamins, minerals, and other anti-inflammatory compounds. This helps to increase your energy, immunity, and improves your overall digestion.
Digesting food is one of the most labor-intensive functions on the body. Allowing the body to rest helps to restore you from the inside out. Incorporating a juice fast into our lifestyle can assist with flushing toxins from the body. So who wouldn’t want all those benefits?
Making juices from home can save you a ton of money too. Yes, it’s okay to buy juice from health food stores when you are on the go , but a fresh bottle of juice can cost as much as $10 per bottle.
}
1
If you’re a newbie, have a plan (aka some recipes) before you hit the store. Trust me with this: You do not want to end up with random fruit that doesn’t taste good when juiced together. Once you get more experience under your belt, you can freestyle it. Until then, stick to the script.
2

Wash, clean, and prep your fruit and veggies when you get home from the grocery store/farmer’s market. This makes juicing so much easier. When everything is already cleaned and ready to go, it eliminates the need to have the daunting task of scrubbing and chopping produce the day you want to drink the juice.
3
Also, you don’t need a pricey juicer. Online stores have juicers for as low as $57.
}
Make your juice ahead of time. I drink six to eight 16oz juices a day during a 3-day detox. That is a lot of juice! I keep them in the fridge stored in mason jars for up to 72 hours before consuming them. This is super helpful when on a juice detox or for folks who don’t want to juice every day.
4
You’re going to need more produce than you think. It takes A LOT of fruits and/or veggies to make a 16oz juice. I drink 16oz of celery juice first thing in the morning at least 5-6 days a week. That can be 4 bunches of celery! This is also why tip #1 is essential. If you have recipes, you’ll know how much produce you need.

Bright Eyes Juice
4 carrots
2 large oranges
1 knob of ginger
Wash all the produce well
Remove orange peel and slice into juicer-sized pieces
Juice ingredients and enjoy!
Grape Jam Juice
1lb black magic grapes 1-2 lemons
Wash all the produce well
Pull grapes from the stem
Remove skin and pith from the lemon
Juice ingredients and enjoy!
Green Glow Juice
2 green apples
4 celery stalks
1 handful of parsley
1 lemon
Wash all the produce well
Remove apple core and slice
Remove lemon peel and slice
Juice ingredients and enjoy!
All recipes make 16-ounce juices. Head to eatplantsprosper.com for more nutrition tips and recipes from Whitney.

Tropical Sunset Juice
1-cup pineapple
1 large carrot
1 orange
1 medium-sized mango
1 knob of ginger
1” knob of turmeric
Wash all the produce well, peel mango skin
Remove the pineapple skin and core
Remove orange peel and slice into juicer-size pieces
Juice ingredients and enjoy!

Celery Juice
1 small bunch of celery
Wash celery well
Juice and enjoy!

Beets By The Pound Juice
2 medium beets
¾ of a large cucumber
1 lemon
1 knob ginger
Wash all the produce well
Peel beets, Remove skin and pith from the lemo
Juice the ingredients and enjoy!

More Strawbabies Please Juice
10 strawberries
1-2 cups watermelon
1/3 of a cucumber
Wash all the produce well
Cut the green tops off the strawberries
Cut the watermelon into juicer size pieces
Juice ingredients and enjoy!

Balance Into Your Life. Welcoming
By Peter M. Lucas“I am not a yogi, medical professional, or a scientist. What I am, however, is an 18-year veteran with the U.S. Marines, Speaker, Consultant, Mentor, Coach, Meditator, and C.E.O.
The human mechanism is not a finite destination. We are a trajectory! “From the moment it went bang, you became worthy, and so as the universe expands, so too should you expand to your limitless potential.” Let’s Bring Balance to Your Life…
“Yogastha Kuru Karmani” (Establish yourself in the present moment; then perform action.)
– Bhagavad Gita
2020 was a little rough! For all those that have experienced suffering, pain, loss, and illness, I feel your pain, more than you can imagine. I have become an empath. Although I have not been diagnosed with COVID-19, the pain around us has impacted how I view our world and my place in it. Amidst the crisis, I found that I have developed a methodology to bring a sense of balance to myself that could be just as potent for others. After six months of BETA Testing, I created an organization called Balancing B.E.E.M.S. that provides
customized consulting, products, and services to bring balance to our client’s lives and the world. My team and I do this by applying a patented methodology for bringing balance to the Body, Energy, Emotions, Mind, and Spirit (B.E.E.M.S.) while exploring self-actualization.
So, how do we begin to bring a sense of balance to the present moment to take practical actions in the world and manifest our limitless potential?
Let’s take the journey together from inspiration to action!

The Body
Typically, our bodies don’t lie. Our bodies communicate through a series of chemical reactions, aches, and pains. However, the problem is our capacity to have the right level of sensitivity, perception, and response to the body’s stimuli. Most of us already know the medical benefits of exercise and its chemical reaction of releasing endorphins into our nervous system, causing a response of pleasure.
There are also specific aspects of the Yogic Sciences called Asanas that can bring physical geometrical alignment to the human system for lasting physical health and spiritual wellbeing. Each of us can tap into our ultimate potential, but there are so many systems and methods out there that it can be a little confusing.
If you are like me and don’t have hours to spend at the gym, you can use the proven high-intensity training methods developed by scientist Izumi Tabata. He confirmed that a 15-minute routine can have the same impact as a 1-hour exercise program, keep you in a state of lifelong health, and ensure that you still have time to live a balanced life.
If you are not yet ready for a deep dive into the Yogic Sciences, a great way to start is by sitting crossed legged and spending a few minutes each day in silence. This is a great way to align the spine, bring flexibility to the overall physical structure, and ensure that you align your physical geometry to the universal principles that govern our existence.
Balancing Energy
“Energy flows where attention goes.” – Tony Robbins.
The evolution of technology has created a world that has become increasingly taxing on our capacity for focused attention. Every single gadget in our home, office, and the world around us, seems to be competing for our attention. What could be more important to the trajectory of your life than what you give your attention to? Time is not money,
“Time is Energy.”
Here are 3 simple tips that you can use to manage your energy consumption throughout the day:
1
2
Sleep vs. Rest: It is essential to get a good night’s rest. Every scientific experiment shows that we perform at our highest capacity with proper sleep. However, if you can limit your anxiety, anger, and frustration throughout the day, you will notice that you will need less sleep, thereby increasing the amount of energy you have to live your best life.
Food: Food is fuel, and the body functions from the foods you eat. There is a direct correlation between energy expended throughout the day and what you consume. Ensuring that you give even a little bit of attention to what you are consuming will significantly impact your performance. Green leafy vegetables are a great way to start!

3
The Breath: Finding balance in the breath can also bring a sense of relaxation to the overall system. There are specific Kriyas, or breath balancing techniques, that are exceedingly beneficial when used throughout the day. For example, if you were to take a break every 2-3hours, for a minimum of 10 minutes to do a specific breathing technique, you would see a dramatic increase in your productivity and quality of life.

Emotional Balance
“My emotional stability is sustained through introspection and healthy expression.” - Peter M. Lucas (Balanced Journaling, 2020)
The year 2020 will be marked as a time that challenged us as a human race. I don’t think we will really grasp the significance of this time until a few years have passed, and the trauma starts to set in on a global scale. We see this all the time in the military. When we are deployed to foreign lands, isolated from the comfort of our families and homes, there is always stress and anxiety, but not immediate trauma. It’s when we get home that the trauma sets in, and the reality of our experiences takes a big chunk out of our emotional stability. I have established two simple methods that have significantly aided in my recovery from a life of anxiety and anger to one of balance:
1
Poetic Balance: Balancing B.E.E.M.S. has released a book of 21 poems with abstract art influenced by each poem. You can use the poems as an aspect of introspection. It’s best to read a poem each day, view the corresponding art, and contemplate your emotional response. This will aid in bringing a sense of clarity in dealing with deeply embedded aspects of the subconscious. The poems should not be read like you would read a book. They are meant to be digested slowly as you would savor other nourishing aspects of life.
2
Balanced Journaling: We have also created a journal with an outline for you to express the triggered emotions while reading the poems and viewing the art.

Balancing the Mind
“You have power over your mind, not outside events, know this, and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius
The mind is a room within rooms. You should never try to balance the mind. Say what? Yes, I just said to leave the mind alone! If you want to maintain your sanity, then the aspects of your mind can only be treated as you would muddy water. The more you mess with it, the worse it gets. So you have to leave the water alone, let the sediments settle until it becomes clear. Same with the mind, you have to learn to leave it alone. The stress, anxiety, muddled thoughts? Haven’t you suffered enough? I know I have! So how to leave the mind alone?
The first thing you can do is manage your Automatic, Negative, Thoughts, or ANTS. Your subconscious is always listening in. Notice the words of the songs you listen to, who do you keep around you, what are they saying? What is the television telling you about yourself? Do you see your worth? Immediately, right after reading these words, I beg you to include things into your life that will foster overall health and wellbeing for your mind. I post poems, art, and “balanced perspective” videos on my Instagram (@balancingbeems) each day. If you are seeking a source for inspiration and positivity, please visit my page for some free “inspiration to action.”
WHEN ALL YOUR B.E.E.M.S. ARE ALIGNED IN ONE BALANCED DIRECTION, THE UNIVERSE CONSPIRES IN YOUR FAVOR.
Spiritual Balance
What is Meditation? Meditation, to me, is like grace. The grace that descends from a higher power is a gift. You cannot get grace. It can only be given based on the circumstances that have been created. So too is the aspect of meditation. You become meditative when you have set the right conditions. When the Body, Energy, Emotions, and Mind have become still, the aspects of Spirituality descends. This is what I call meditation. So how do we achieve this? How does one become meditative? What are the steps to achieve qualities of meditativeness? When you combine all the elements of the steps mentioned above. So it’s about aligning ourselves in a specific geometry. This is Yoga.

When we are aligned, we get into a state of flow. When we subscribe to the natural laws that go beyond those set by human beings, we ascend to another dimension of reality. In this place, there is no such thing as fear, anxiety, or failure. In this place, we attain self-actualization. Are you ready? Let’s go!! I sincerely hope that this article will bring some light, love, and laughter to your life. – Pranams.
YOGIC WISDOM On j Off THE MAT
Listen to your soul
By Keegan FitzpatrickThe many asanas, and branches of yoga, offer the common and advanced practitioner timeless wisdom: physical, emotional, and spiritual. The emphasis of mind-body connection offers the modern yogi a refreshing take on their own physical body and personal experience. One of the most valuable tools that yoga can provide is the ability to listen and learn. By practicing yoga, we learn about our selves, our bodies, and ultimately the order of the universe, along with our place inside that narrative. Perhaps the most accessible way to initially encounter this concept of listening in yoga is to explore meditation. Through meditation we find stillness within the body and mind, allowing what is to simply be. In observing forward momentum, unobstructed, and fluid, we create space to listen- to experience. If we can remain still and patient, we
begin to hear messages. These messages expound upon the state of our selves, mental geography, emotional stance, bodily patterns, and so much more. In many yoga traditions, the practice of physical asanas, yogic postures, is to ensure ease and mental clarity for mediation and transcendence.
Simply put, yoga is preparation, and becomes a meditation in motion. We are asked to focus on our breath, and as we ride the waves of inhalation and exhalation, our bodies dance through postures and shapes. One beautiful example is cat/cow. The in-breath stretches the belly, elongating the body forward. The out-breath delivers the navel backward and domes the upper to mid-back. This motion may seem simple but is indeed profound. The listening here comes through comparison. We note the difference in our body and breath from
one moment to the next. Our spine may find itself to be stiff or irregular some days, or feel loose and uninhibited other days. As we connect each movement and experience, we drop our ego, tune into a higher frequency of source energy, and learn about ourselves on a cosmic, yet, personal level. If we remain in the beginner’s mindset, we continuously learn from our practice.
Yoga teaches us to listen, and then we have information to process. This is where an open heart comes in handy. In remaining fluid and honest about our emotions, and the ups and downs we experience, we can digest and let go of difficult emotions more easily. An open heart also serves us by ushering inward the healing energy, and wisdom, that regular practice can offer. Essentially: easy out, easy in. If we work to stay raw, vulnerable, wide open, the universe will always reward us with lessons. We only need to be wise enough to listen and receive them.
As winter slides into its icy position for the months ahead, remember to listen to yourself and to your

surroundings. Notice the ego and then allow what is to unfold and exist. Remind yourself often that You Are Enough! The winter months support an inward journey, full of reflection and shadow work. Inside our homes and inside of our bodies, we become increasingly dormant and simultaneously alive with a silent churning. We come home to rest- to create an inner equilibrium. Use this magical nesting time to take stock of where, who, and how you are. Prepare yourself a cup of tea and this time, really listen to how the water sounds as it bubbles and boils.
Become very still and very quiet; allow your past to whisper to you about how you want to be treated and where your path may lead. Listen for the nearsilent stacking of snowflakes upon each other- crisp, unique, and stunning. Practice this deep listening on and off your mat, absorb the sound waves of your own existence. Listen, remain open, and learn. May you heal, and may this time serve you, so that you may serve the greater good!

we are starting 2021 with a whole lot of love!
Incorporating tender affirmations and vivid visualizations of Earth elements helps guide me through each asana in my yoga practice. In honor of the New Year, each pose in this spread was consciously curated with intention— release what no longer serves us and open ourselves to new opportunities and experiences. Included are heart chakra openers for every yogi, from beginner to advanced. Salamba Bhujangasana | Sphinx
Begin by laying in prone position (lay flat on your mat, stomach down, back up), place elbows directly under your shoulders, aligning forearms in a parallel position. Lower your body, beginning from the hips, resting on the Earth beneath you. Allow the pressure of your forearms on the Earth to influence your shoulders to press away from your ears. You have the choice to attach your feet together or to place them hips-width distance apart. Sphinx is a gentle yet effective pose and perfect to incorporate into your daily practice.
1 2
Ustrasana | Camel Pose
Begin kneeling on both knees, reach one arm behind you to grab hold of the ankle (same side as the arm). Lift your heart space up to shine towards the heavens, lengthen your throat chakra by gazing behind you. Using your free hand, grab hold of the other ankle. Continue to press the hips and the entire front side of your body away from your head. In this pose, you are creating a circular shape, which cultivates the powerful structure of infinite energy.

3
Matsyasana | Fish Pose
Beginning in a seated position with legs lengthened out in front of you, place your elbows about 2 inches behind your glutes, laying forearms down onto your mat, lift your heart up towards the heavens and lower your head down towards the Earth slowly. Make sure your shoulders are pressing away from your ears. Create an elegant straight line from your feet to your glutes by pointing your ankles and feet. While this pose is opening your heart space, it also strengthens your upper back muscles.
4
Eka Pasa Rajakapotasana | King Pigeon
Beginning in pigeon pose (one leg at a 90-degree angle in front of you while the other leg is lengthened behind you), root both hands into the Earth as you lift your back foot up off of your mat and grasp this foot with the opposite hand. As your foot and opposite hand are connected, funnel your head through this opening and simultaneously lift your heart up to the sky. When you feel balanced enough to do so, use your free hand to meet your other, grabbing hold of your foot. King pigeon pose is challenging yet beautiful and takes conscious dedication to achieve.

5Chakrasana | Wheel Pose
Beginning in the supine position (lay flat on your back) with your knees bent and feet grounded into the Earth, place both hands onto your mat right beside your ears. Take an inhale in this position. As you exhale, lift your hips up towards the heavens, creating a rainbow shape with your spine. Imagine roots beaming from your hands and feet, latching onto the soil beneath you and attaching you to this physical plane, while the anterior side of your body is shining towards the sky. Here you are open to receiving all light from the higher realms. Grounded yet floating in your divinity, Chakrasana is the ultimate heart opener to incorporate into your practice. 6
Anuvittasana | Standing Backbend
Begin kneeling on both knees, reach one arm behind you to grab hold of the ankle (same side as the arm). Lift your heart space up to shine towards the heavens, lengthen your throat chakra by gazing behind you. Using your free hand, grab hold of the other ankle. Continue to press the hips and the entire front side of your body away from your head. In this pose, you are creating a circular shape, which cultivates the powerful structure of infinite energy.

Therapy Talks
By Mercia Cummings
When I was a kid, I often found the woods to be my sacred space. I could go into my backyard and just imagine that I was escaping to a whole new world. I didn’t realize then that it was my magical place...my sacred space. The trees offered me a connection to the divine, both outside of me and within. The animals reminded me of the blessings that surrounded me. The toys taught me I could create my own worlds.
We often stop creating space for ourselves as we get older. We focus on arranging our closets, or we may even focus on creating workspaces. But we don’t really set aside space just for ourselves. Our family members might even set up space for themselves, but for mom’s, especially, we may find ourselves sharing space. For instance, my husband has a “man room,” and my daughter had a playroom. Though I have a small townhouse, they both had their own space.
For me, I had a couch. I would attempt to take up space on a sofa, my improvised chanting area, and even lying in bed to watch TV, but somehow someone would always take up space -with me. When I started practicing Buddhism, I had a corner in the living room to do my prayers.
Writing this, I thought about my childhood and the spaces I took up. Whether in my room, or even my personality, I always existed beyond my living spaces. As a wife and mother, I sometimes forget to make space for myself, both in life and in our home. I forgot about being sacred.
As adults, we often stop taking up space. We play it safe. We want people to like us, to accept us, and to celebrate us. So, we shrink ourselves to make others accept us. We go on daily unrecognizing that even our bodies are a sacred space. We forget that we are each sacred in our own right. We belittle ourselves, and we fail to make space for ourselves just so others are comfortable with themselves. But how comfortable are we with ourselves?
I usually do my online counseling in the living room when I didn’t need to go to the office, and no one would be home. Outside of our family dogs, it was nice to have an empty, quiet house while working. When COVID hit, everyone was home, and I suddenly found myself looking for space for me. My daughter’s play area turned into a storage space over time. I improvised in the storage space by finding a corner to set up a desk and chair, but all around that space was clutter.
listen within, and let the world know me. I reminded myself, I have a sacred space; I am a sacred space.
Sacred spaces give us more than just a room, but a place to really work on who we are. Whether it’s doing yoga, meditating, or even just reading, sacred spaces allow us to escape from the world and be completely ourselves. With all the different roles we play, it is difficult for us to be authentic.
“We often stop creating space for ourselves as we get older.”
“A sacred space allows us to be completely genuine.”
First, I took up a corner to do counseling, then I realized I needed to have more room. After living in my house for 13 years, I finally made space for myself. I was focused on having an office space, but then when I became a yoga instructor, I realize I needed more than a workspace. I need a space that fit me. This situation magnified other things. From that small room, I recognized the need to take up space in my life. I realized that I needed to find ways to be present for myself,
Sacred Sacred
A sacred space allows us to be completely genuine. I think of all these spaces we occupy and think, how do we, or can we take sacredness with us?
From a once junky room, I created a space where I could work, meditate, pray, practice yoga, and just be. I even found that I was able to teach yoga in that space. Even though the space is small, it’s entirely mine. I found an area that I can use to focus on me, the world, or nothing at all. In this room, I’ve learned to take up space. Not just in the small room or the small townhouse. But to take up space wherever I go. To show up like me and only me.
Sacred space isn’t just about a room; it is also about ourselves. Where can you be sacred? Or honor who you are working to become? Now, I appreciate the corner I have for my altar to pray because that corner allows me to be present. The size of your sacred space matters not. It is truly the sacred space within and what we share with others that matters; by being authentically ourselves.

Our Mitochondrial DNA goes back generations – hence mtDNA’s popular name, “The Eve Gene.” Each of us inherits our mtDNA intact from our mother, who inherited hers from her mother. Ultimately, every person alive today has inherited their mitochondrial DNA from one single great-great-great.... grandmother, nearly 200,000 years ago. The power of science, specifically our DNA, influenced The Eve Esthetic series. The project’s goal is to highlight and pay homage to the concept of The Eve Gene and humanity’s relationship to nature.
Humbled Beginnings
The project started in 2015, when the RAW Showcase in Tampa, Florida, featured my project. For the next two years, I learned how to bring my visions to life more accurately, resulting in a few more showcases in Tampa. Over time, I began to switch gears to focus on my photography business.
Towards the end of 2017, the urge to create art for the sake of my artistic self became a need. The Eve Esthetic provided a sense of balance. Before this project, I’d solely create for my clients. In 2018, I put up a casting call on social media and received more model submissions than I had ever before. I had my own studio space, which allowed for no boundaries on how frequently I could shoot.
The Process
I had a clear vision that included safe standard shots I knew

would work for general ideas and left open space for the models to showcase their skills. I use the word model loosely. The participants ranged from experienced models to women who had never been in front of the camera before. Before shooting in the studio, I’d have conversations with the models about who they are, what they’re into, and what inspired them to be a part of the project. Their trust in me and willingness to be consumed with the creative process led to images that would demand attention without editing. I am incredibly proud of what these women were able to give to the project. Their vulnerability encouraged me to research and establish various narratives that all speak to who Eve was.
Another significant element of the project is the use of landscape images. I considered using stock images, but it took away from the project’s authenticity. To fix this, I grabbed my gear and my passport and ventured across the globe. Various cities throughout the US, Puerto Rico, China, Russia, Bahamas, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Denmark, Estonia, Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, US Virgin Islands, and Argentina became part of the adventure of this project. These trips came with their own set of intricacies ranging from getting sick in Costa Rica, to learning drones were banned in Death Valley. I traveled over 40,000 miles and, in the process, fell in love with landscape photography as a

result. The last portion of the project is the editing process.
The Gift
During this last cycle, I used the idea of double exposure to its full capacity. I also considered Dynamic Symmetry, Color Theory, Gestalt Psychology, Laws of Symmetry, Harmonic Armature, and classical skill-based design. I coupled a better understanding of how to shoot the models, along with landscape photos from travel. I was less enthused about using solo shots of plants. While shooting on a medium format camera, merging these skills added a delicate intricacy that makes the project impactful without saying a word.
The Eve Esthetic is a celebration of the significance of women and the beauty of nature. This project reflects who I am and my relation to The Eve Gene. It is also a reminder to stay true to who you are as an artist. It is a celebration of classical art as a skill, via photography and graphic design. I’ve grown to love my art the further I develop this idea. I hope that you grow to love my art the same way.
