he SAT is a test that many high school students see as an intelligence test, where the more points you score, the smarter you are. If I told you Mike scored a 1300 on the SAT while David scored 1500, many people would say that David is smarter than Mike. But can the SAT really prove something like intelligence?

While it may be true that a student with a SAT score in the 95th percentile is more academically gifted than classmates, it is not always the case that he is is smarter. Mike could be a poor test taker, while David could have prepared in advance to obtain his score.

By definition, intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skill, not how well one can memorize a subject. An intelligent person can learn and apply knowledge more efficiently. High-end colleges obviously want intelligent people, because they want the students that can learn and use the knowledge that they have to offer. However, colleges use the SAT as the significant deciding factor on accepting students, which can really hurt those smart students who are too busy to study because they’re taking three AP classes and have a job.

Furthermore, Howard Gardner’s Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences talks about the nine different types of intelligence. The SAT covers only two of them, which are linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence. There are many different types of skills, such as creative or coping skills as an example, that the SAT does not cover. Therefore, a student who performs well in writing and not math can be overlooked just by her score, regardless of other abilities she excels in.

Perhaps the answer lies within the history of the SAT. It originally was

Then, in 1926, the Scholastic Aptitude Test was created to replace the old IQ test in order to measure a high school student’s aptitude, or ability to perform well in college in the future. Throughout its history, there have been many times when the SAT inaccurately measured aptitude. Studies about intelligence and the history of the SAT help show how far the college board test is from determining the intellect of an individual. According to Bob Schaeffer, the public education director of the National Center for Fair & Open Testing, “No test can truly measure ‘aptitude’ for academic success because school performance is not based on a single factor. Math and verbal skills are just one compo-

nent. Non-cognitive traits, such as creativity, motivation and ‘grit,’ also play significant roles. Moreover the nature of these standardized exams means that they advantage students with strong test-taking skills, not necessarily those with other talents that may be more valuable in the classroom or in life. Test designers have quietly acknowledged this reality by removing labels such as ‘aptitude,’ ‘ability,’ and ‘intelligence’ from their products’ titles.” The College Board removed the word aptitude from the title in 1994 and the test is just known as the SAT today.

In the end, many students are guilty of seeing SAT scores as a measure of intelligence. The SAT should never be perceived as a measurement of one’s intellect, but a measurement of how determined a student is to work hard in order to get a better score on the test. Never let a low SAT score put you below others, nor let a high SAT score put you above others, especially when an intelligent student could have an average SAT score and an average student have a very high SAT score. It’s not about how smart you are, but how hard you work.

New Year, New SAT

2016 brings changes to the crucial college admission test

W

ith a new year comes a newly redesigned Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)—a dreaded exam for millions of students across the nation.

The new SAT consists of a new grading scale, accompanied by changes to the type of questions, while still remaining consistent in the topics that are tested (math, reading, and writing). This will be the last year the original SAT will be given out before it becomes officially extinct.

Counselor Sara Tones is excited about the reformatted SAT, which will be given to juniors on campus on March 2.

“There is a new structure. Everything basically. Everything is new. The scoring system is new. The timing is new. And the question format is new,” Tones said.

Only students from the Class of 2017 and above can take this new SAT if they wish to. Unlike the old SAT, this SAT will be three hours long, with fifty additional minutes if the student decides to take the optional essay.

Some students may wonder how this redesign will benefit them.

“It’s just different,” Tones explained. “I can’t speak to whether it’s going to be a benefit or not because I really don’t know [because] we haven’t seen it yet.”

The new SAT, according to Tones, will be much more similar to the ACT. The exam will focus more on actual skills taught in schools rather than relying on testing tricks. The math section will focus more on data and graph interpretations and basic trigonometry instead of the usual geometry and shapes. Just like the ACT, the new SAT will not penalize students for guessing incorrectly, so students should try their best to answer each and every question. Lastly, the SAT will only have four answer choices, instead of five.

“It’s just going to be more similar to how ACT does it,” Tones said “The actual questions are more evidence-based. Less emphasis on vocabulary. So there’s not the famous SAT words people talk about—the big vocabulary words. The questions are more formatted to the ACT… March will be the first time they release it.”

According to the College Board, the purpose of the SAT is to predict how well a student will do in college by including content and skills that are related to college potential. GPA alone will not determine how well a student may or may not do in college.

Moreover, the SAT is free in March for all Alief juniors.

“The district started paying for all juniors to take one SAT last year. This is actually the [second] year of that program. It doesn’t correlate with the release of the new SAT—that part is [just a] coincidence,” Tones wrote in an email.

According to college and career clerk Michelle Moncada, students should aim to score between 1000 and 1200, which is about the national average. Tones wants to let students know they can get prepared for the

upcoming SAT by visiting Khan Academy through the College Board for personalized study questions. Juniors can also go see teachers Margaret Bancroft, Daniel Gill, Ayn Nys, or librarian Paula Murray for more info and study help. These teachers are trained by Princeton Review and are available to help students one-to-one or in a study group.

this year, they’ll be encouraged to prepare for it and study for it.”

AP Language teacher Ayn Nys also sees the free test as an opportunity for students, but she has some concerns.

“It is really nice that students will be able to take the test for free,” Nys said. “Kerr has been known to be scoring well over the national average on AP tests. If students plan to take an AP test for a class that haven’t took just because it’s free, it might run a risk of bringing down the reputation of the school.”

Nys encourages students who want to take an AP test for a class they haven’t taken to seek help.

“Without preparation, it is very difficult for a student to earn a passing grade. Those four hours they spend

taking a test will be a waste of time,” Nys said. “If they still plan to take the test without taking the class, they can still pass but they will need to prepare. Students should come prepare a month or two before the test at a center. The teachers will be more than happy to provide the student with practice. I’ve had students earn a 4 or a 5 before that didn’t take a class.”

Nonetheless, with these complications that the free test might bring, the test remains fairly the same.

“The test is going to be very similar to the previous years. Nothing has really changed The,” Nys said. “It is still a challenging exam that tests the student’s AP ability.”

The Chance for Success

All AP tests free this year for Alief ISD

F

rom staying up all night memorizing all of the acts that the British imposed on the American Colonies to ending your social life to learn the relationship between torque, tension, and rotational inertia, Advanced Placement classes offer a rigorous learning process that prepares a student for the College Board AP Tests at the end of the school year. But paying for those tests is no longer a challenge for AP students.

AP classes, mainly starting junior year, teach subjects at a college level.

The AP tests are offered by the National College Board, and cost $92 per exam. Students who qualify, depending on income, can receive a $30 discount. Every year, Alief provides a further price reduction based on the

student’s lunch status. The test would usually be free students who don’t pay for lunch, reduced for students that have reduced lunch and full priced for students who do not have reduced lunch.

This year, Alief is paying for of the all tests that the students plan to take.

AP tests for students in Alief will be free regardless of the student’s financial lunch plan.

College Counselor Sara Tones said that, without any financial limitation, the students will be able to have an opportunity to obtain college credit for free.

“The test isn’t given for free. The district pays for it. It is free to students,” Tones said. “But I hope that when students see that the test is free

A Tale to Remember

‘Strange Boarders’ becomes a schoolwide hit

T

he lights are dimmed. The crowd is silent. The actors and actresses are ready. The play finally begins with the lights fully glimmering, revealing a beautifully decorated set that resembles the interior of a house. In just a few moments, the audience would witness the many action packed scenes in the latest Cadre Kerr masterpiece—“Strange Boarders.”

In the second half, boarding house owner Cordelia is faced with a dilemma: how to hide two bound and gagged bank robbers and a third, dressed like a minister, who has been knocked unconscious, when the neighborhood busybody arrives to confront her about how she is caring for her foster daughters. Meanwhile, a pair of mobsters is searching her property for $10,000. How does she deal with the intrusion? The solution is simple: gag and tie up the neighbor, too, until the police can arrive and sort everything out.

The January production of “Strange Boarders” was a comedic tale of mischief, mayhem, and money. The play revolves around a stolen sum. The group of bank robbers sees an ad in a newspaper for a board-

ing-house and plan to hide the money there. The house is owned and run by Cordelia, a loving adoptive mother of two children named Candy and Gloria. A crazy play of fun, comedy, action, and plenty of surprises surround the search for the money, attempts to keep it, and making sure it stays out of the hands of the wrong people.

Senior Christina Tahtouh, who played Cordelia, found it to be a unique experience. The play took a different approach from many other of Cadre Kerr’s plays. “‘Strange Boarders’ is different from any show I’ve ever done because it is my first comedy,” Tahtouh said in an interview via text. “I’m so used to always doing serious, dramatic type shows, so this was refreshing. Another exciting thing about this show was the raised stage! We’ve never done anything like that before.”

The crew for the play constructed a stage that was partially elevated from the ground, enlarging the amount of space the cast has for performing and separating them from the audience.

In addition to the new perspective from the stage, Christina said the production was different because it was

Tahtouh said the play did not have a deep message, as audience members might have expected from a realistic drama.

“All of these characters were super light-hearted and exaggerated.

Therefore, the comedy was the focus.

I’d say it was about the importance of persistence!”

Tahtouh said performing in front of an audience used to scare her, but the experiences since her first play have overcome those nerves.

“Before my first show, “Scarlet Letter,” where I played Hester, I was terrified of messing up and embarrassing myself. The whole week leading up to opening night, I wanted to get it over with,” she said. “But, over time the nerves turn into adrenaline, and you look forward to the rush of being onstage. Nerves eventually disappear or turn into energy once you realize that the audience is there to enjoy, not [critique]. When you’re on stage, you become the character—once you realize that, you don’t focus on the ‘real world’.”

“Strange Boarders” left a lasting impact on many of the audience members as well as the actors. Freshman Beverly Meija found the play to be quite amusing.

“It was very funny and well put together. It was a good production,” Meija happily said. “I’ll be coming to watch more of the plays because a lot of my friends are in them. And they’re really good.”

Teacher of the Year

Volkova honored by recogntion

“I

didn’t want to run initially, but students and fellow teachers convinced me to do so.”

From not wanting to run to being crowned “Teacher of the Year,” Social Studies teacher Evguenia Volkova has come a long way from this now ironic quote.

The title of “Teacher of the Year” is an award given to the teacher who has been chosen , by his/her colleagues, as one who has gone above and beyond the rest of the teachers in his/her field of teaching. The “Teacher of the Year” voting for the 2015-2016 KHS school year consisted of six candidates: journalism teacher Laura Negri, Spanish teacher Eileen Caetta, dual credit teacher Tommy Miller, band director Ashley Siegrist,P.E. coach Mary Pat Bailey, and Volkova.. On January 21, Volkova was announced as the KHS

“Teacher of the Year.”

“I feel very honored and flattered,” Volkova said. “I wasn’t expecting to win the competition but I am very grateful that I did.”

As campus Teacher of the Year, Volkova will receive a cash award and will be considered for district secondary teacher of the year. She and other campus winners will be honored and the district secondary and elementary teachers of the year will be announced at a ceremony April 21 at Taylor High School.

Volkova’s win came as no surprise for other teachers who described Ms. Volkova’s victory as just and deserving so.

“I knew it was going to be stiff competition,” Caetta said. ”It’s nice that she was the one who received the award and I feel like she will be a great

Teacher of the Year to represent KHS.” Bailey agrees.

“I think she deserves it,” Bailey said. “I think she’s an outstanding woman, teacher, friend and I’m thrilled for her. It is an honor and she 100 percent deserves it.”

Most teachers who were nominated for the award, unsurprisingly, had been nominated before on several other occasions and even at different campuses.

“I have been nominated on two other campuses and I’ve been nominated I believe about four times here at Kerr,”Miller said.

Winning the competition came as a milestone for Volkova, who moved this year from the English to the Social Studies department. While grateful for the recognition, she would like to see more teachers recognized

for their services. Seeing as there is a “Student of the Month” award, Volkova said having a similar event for teachers would be a great addition.

“I think it’s a great idea to recognize the teachers for what they do and show appreciation for it,” Volkova said. “I prefer to think that every teacher in this building comes in and does an outstanding job everyday or tries to. I think that teachers should be recognized more often for their contributions to teaching so a teacher of the month award would give us an opportunity to thank and recognize more teachers as opposed to once a year.”

Kerr’s Got Talent

Talent show auditions showcase a variety of skills

I

n most auditions, nerves can take the best of some of the best performers but at at the talent show auditions this year laughs could be heard from every corner of the cafeteria. If you entered the cafeteria during the talent show auditions, you would have probably seen senior Feyisayo Ogunlana performing a series of acts.

Ogunlana auditioned more than seven times to ensure a place in the talent show, showing her impressive, freestyle skills.

The annual Kerr Talent Show will be on February 26 in the cafeteria.

Auditions were held in the cafeteria February 9 by Class of 2016 officers.

Auditioners exhibited their talents in a one-minute time limit.

Senior Shafin Amin and junior Chandler Clark were one of the first to audition. Shafin played the electric guitar and Clark sang the song “We are Young” by Fall Out Boy. Shafin performed at the talent show last year in a group, but this year he was not as confident about his personal performance.

“We had it all planned out but I didn’t get the chance to warm up for this rehearsal,” Amin said. “I think Chandler did fantastic. He giggled a little because of the mistake I made and then that’s how it went kind of

But if they judge us on what we did here, I don’t know.”

Junior Chastity Tensely delivered a powerful, yet calming rendition of Beyonce’s “Listen,” garnering praise from the audience.

“It’s really powerful and hard and I wanted to do something hard,”

Tensely said. Chasity performed at the talent show her freshmen and sophomore year.

Sophomore Brian Banh performed “Rocket” by Beyonce in a last-minute audition.

“I heard people calling my name to [audition] so I was like ‘O.K’, Banh said.

Sophomore Vy Dang and Junior Vanessa Pereira performed Bruno Mars’ “When I was Your Man.” Vi’s

partner bailed on her so she asked Vanessa to perform with her.

“I was told five minutes before [the audition],” Pereira said. She had performed last year in a dance group.

During the auditions, singing was not the only talent on display. Juniors Excel Luna and Christian Robles performed an original rap song, Junior Philip De Vila performed a solo dance. Feyisayo Ogunlana auditioned in the categories for dance, singing, rapping, and comedy and added much needed humor during the audition process. Band members Christian Robles (drums) Kareem Hlayhel (drums), Exel Luna (piano), and Anderson Igben (saxophone) auditioned with their instruments as a quartet.

Seniors Hyacinth Barretto and My Ha performed with junior Helen Do the song “Demons” by Imagine Dragons. Before the audition, they had around a few rehearsals. “[It took] three or four rehearsals,” Barretto said. However, senior My Ha didn’t echo the same nervousness as others who auditioned.

“We did our best. No regrets. No regrets,” Ha said.
