EDITOR’S LETTER navanlifemagazine@gmail.com www.navanlife.com Navan Life Magazine 39 Watergate St. Navan Co. Meath

You are very welcome to the third issue of Navan Life!

It’s that time of year again when the kids go back to school, the days get shorter and the weather takes a turn for the worst. But don’t despair! We have our best magazine yet that will keep you entertained through these long autumn nights! Parenting is the toughest challenge any individual will ever undertake. Children don’t come with an instruction manual more to the pity, so most of the time us parents are merely winging it! We all love and want the best for our kids and everyone can benefit from a little education and guidance. I spoke to Navan Springboard Project Manager, Sé Fulham on the marvellous work the initiative carries out. We have a fantastic style section with the hottest new trends for autumn, how to achieve the celebrity look, beauty reviews and a new tried and tested section. Irene Roche answers your fashion queries and Glenda Gilson shares her style secrets exclusively with Navan Life!

Did you know that Ireland produces over three hundred tonnes of waste each year with small and medium enterprise contributing to over half of this commercial and industrial waste issue? With this in mind, it’s no wonder greenbusiness.ie is becoming a vital tool for modernising Irish businesses. I spoke to Clodagh McGrath on how this kind of initiative is invaluable for companies. Along with all of the above we have a gadget review with Click, a full over view of events in the Solstice Arts Centre and as usual the finest businesses in Navan! We have thoroughly enjoyed making this issue and we are blown away by the amazing response from both readers and businesses. Thank you ! Enjoy! Sally x Editor

Navan Springboard - a Vital local Service for Parents No matter where your background lies, parenting is without doubt the most challenging role you will ever undertake. We all want the best for our children but sometimes we all need a little guidance and support from people who are trained to help. Navan Springboard was set up with an objective to work with and support families who are experiencing difficulties. Sally Harding spoke to Sé Fulham about the on- going work of this extraordinary local service.

Navan Springboard was established in 1999 with the aim to provide a service for families where there was evidence of recognised neglect and issues for parents and children. Over the past 12 years, the idea of providing family support has developed and grown and Springboard now work with a number of service interventions responding to parents and children based on the individual needs. A long side Springboard‘s more intensive work they offer parenting courses, support groups and much more besides. Project Manager Sé Fulham explains the different depths of work involved. “Some of our work is quite intense where we deal with families that have welfare concerns. We work on a regular basis with parents whose children are in foster care and they come to us to be in a better place when their children return home. At the less intensive end that we provide parenting courses and support groups for parents whose children may be nowhere near welfare concern but just want to better educate themselves in this area,” says Sé.

Support Sé told me that there is a very strong research base that shows that adults that are comfortable, secure and have confidence looking after children will result in children that will do better in life. The more they can work with adults encouraging a good parenting capacity, the better able they will be to respond

to their children positively. “Parents need to understand the importance of play for young children because that is how they learn and understand the world. Good communication is hugely valuable and learning to listen and say things to each other in a way that the parent and child can understand will be hugely beneficial,” adding “ with the establishment of a routine in a household all of these things come together to bring better outcomes for children.” As a society over the last few years, huge interest has grown in the area of parenting having being sparked by the onset of TV shows like Super Nanny and RTE’S Families in Trouble and even though production companies seek out the more extreme cases for better TV, the issues still strike a chord with parents. Sé says the notion of a child being seen and not heard has, thankfully, moved on greatly. “Family life is much more democratic and more about children having rights and responsibility. Parents are now struggling with how to be authoritative in this new dynamic as firm, authoritative warm parenting is the most effective.” “We have parenting courses on a regular basis and have three support groups that run weekly. We have a parent social group that offers an opportunity for parents to get out and mix and converse with other mums and dads. There is also a lone parent’s support group because for many couples parenting is a struggle but at least you have each other, as lone parent you have yourself. It’s a very tough space.”

He’s My Dad Project 1 in 5 children in Ireland are in one parent family. One third up to a half of those do not have contact with the non resident parent. Sé maintains that a child can experience the love warmth and commitment of the non resident parent. The concept of staying together for the kids can only work if you can stay together in reasonable way. As the years passed one of the things Sé and his team were becoming acutely aware of was the low uptake of dads availing of their services. Some of the feedback they got was that they perceived these services to be provided by women for women and with women. It was obvious that the town needed an outlet specifically supporting men to become good dads. “Active positive fathering usually impacts upon outcomes for children like reduced involvement in anti social behaviour, better education performance and reduced onset of first sexual experience for girls, adding this if for Dads in couple relationship, single dads and separated dads united by one thing - a commitment and an interest in their children.” The media perception of the dead beat dad is one that is well trotted out but the concept of the committed father is not one we see a lot of. One of the things that is discussed in the He’s my dad project group is how to get to see your child if you are separated and there is conflict with your partner. Going to court and getting access can be the solution for some people but there can be a way to provide contact between the absent parent that is less stressful, explains Sé, “ Once you go into court, it’s a battle. You have to prove you are more right than the other side. That leads to taking psychological punches at each other that is not good for the parent or the children. A much more collaborative approach to family law is much more beneficial.”

In the access support service Springboard offers a space for parent to see their child under supervision where the resident parent knows there is someone there to ensure safety as well being of child. In a space that is homely and as much as it can be, natural for the child. “We worked with two boys who hadn’t seen their respective fathers for a number of years and in both of those cases we were able to get to the point where both mothers were able to establish some level of trust in the father and after a period of time the fathers were calling to the family home to collect their sons. In some cases it becomes evident that seeing a parent is not in the child’s best interests so it’s not all a bunch of roses but we do what is best for the child.”

Changing times Originally set up at request of HSE, Springboard’s subsequent funding has been cut by 23% in the last three years resulting in enormous pressure on the organisation. “We are a bit like the insurance policy in that through the economic good times, parents were rich on money and poor on time and believed they could buy their children through material things. Now it’s the other way around and the one thing that kids want is time with their parents. That is the greatest gift you could give them. Even as we reflect on our childhood, we have memories of the day we went to the sea side, went fishing or when we helped mum bake the birthday cake not when we got the Xbox or the expensive track suit.” We are all well aware of the affects of the economic situation on families but it is services like Springboard that help rebuild families and take the brunt of the downfall. Families with minor under current conflicts in the good times have experienced these underlying stress issues to come to the surface resulting in the breakdown of many families according to the project manager.

children, focusing on what they do well is a better approach. In Ireland, if a child is good and tennis and bad at Maths in school, a parent might say, if you don’t improve your maths, we’ll stop your tennis. What the Americans would say is if you are good at tennis, we’ll get you extra lessons.” “We are not all going to be successful at everything. If we play to our strengths we’ll grow up to be much more comfortable. I would encourage all parents to keep a diary of what they are doing well and note the things you are proud of, that could just be that you got the dinner on the table on time or that you spent ten minutes when you came in from work playing with the kids. Parenting and taking responsibility for an infant through to adulthood is the most challenging and demanding job that any adult can undertake and Navan is blessed to have Springboard as such a service does not exist in other parts of the county and Sé has people travelling from Kells and beyond to avail of this amazing service. However to continue, they need to secure long term funding. “Family support shouldn’t be a lottery depending on where you live.” “I’ve seen couples breaking up because of the financial stress. As a country, we got fixated on all the material things and we lost the importance to some degree of relationships, family and friends and enjoying the now. We have seen huge increases for the demand in counselling particularly for children. Children are always trying to understand the world and they believe in some ways that they are responsible for their world,” adding “so when mum and dads argue, some children think they cause it. For me, it’s really important to explain to children as best as they can understand what’s happening around them, because they have an enormous capacity to understand. We need to say things in a child friendly way that is age appropriate.”

Parenting course Navan Springboard holds a number of parenting course throughout the year focusing on the Importance of routine in the household, managing children’s behaviour, and encouraging play for and with children and communication. With the information that is given at these courses, Sé says that the biggest benefit of attending is probably listening and sharing tips with other parents. “Children don’t come with an instruction manual. You are not told what to do if x happens. Some people come out of interest and to obtain additional knowledge and some people really need help. We have a long tradition in this country at looking at things and finding fault. When it comes to

“As a parent and person who has worked in this field for 25 years, I’ve learnt that every parent will have challenges, it’s part of the process. We should not be trying to create a carbon copy of ourselves, we need to facilitate the creation and development of a unique individual and that individual is going to have a certain amount of conflict with us. Getting the balance of what we are doing well, what gives us joy and what can be improved upon is the key.”

If you’re like me, you think you know everything there is to know about slimming treatments – but that was until I found Lipomassage. This treatment is truly revolutionary, it actually reshapes your figure and it does so without surgery! I started my investigation at a certified Lipomassage Centre. The Lipomassage specialist offered me to literally melt my fat away just where I wanted. Diet and Exercise makes you lose weight, but not necessarily where you want to lose inches; Lipomassage is designed to precisely treat my fat and cellulite in targeted zones, without compromising my glamourous curves (breast)!

A Treatment that has you melting with pleasure Lipomassage combines an exclusive methodology with the latest technology of the Cellu M6 technology of the Cellu M6 Keymodule. This device features patented independent motorized rollers that gently stimulate the skin to increase fluid exchanges and help the lazy adipocytes (fat cells) to eliminate fat – a process known as lipolysis. Jenny, a highly trained Lipomassage expert, explained that the advanced performance of the machine allows choosing between 3 rotations. The first – the Roll’in- releases the fat stored in the adipocytes (lipolysis), the second the Roll’ out – firms the skin, and the last – Roll’up

Lipomassage, an Endermologie based technique is sweeping the country. Finally! A scientifically proven, long-lasting solution for diet and exercise resistant localised fat. reshapes the figure. Back to me: If I had to describe my problem, Id say that most of the time I was sitting on it. My shirts and my t-shirts were never long enough and everything I’ve tried over the years didnt work, including diet and exercise..............Bottom line: I asked Jenny to show me what Lipomassage could do on my saddlebag thighs. Three weeks – and 6 x 40 minutes sessions later – my figure had a different shape Now I can wear low waist, sexy pants. The difference is so extreme my boyfriend is amazed. He thinks I look great. In fact, as Lipomassage works on men too, he set an appointment to try it on his love handles !

Isabelle G Mother of Harry 13 months old. After giving birth, I just couldnt get my figure back. I’d started exercising again and carefully watching my diet. I’d lost weight but my tummy and hips were strongly resisting all my efforts to improve them. My gynecologist told me about a new treatment called Lipomassage and gave me the address of a local treatment center. After 3 weeks, I lost inches and my skin became firmer..... What I really liked is that I slimmed down where I wanted to. In just 6 sessions and at a reasonable cost, I’ve got my “beforebaby” figure back. I’ve told all my friends about it!

Tried & Tested Words: Sally Harding

Irish Organic Skincare Now more than ever, people are taking notice of the importance of supporting local business and enterprise but why would you even think of buying products elsewhere when various ranges of stunning natural skincare brands are available on your doorstep? Here is some of best around!

Tan Organic Tan Organic founder Noelle O’Connor certainly made an impression when she pitched her idea for the entrepreneurs on RTE’S Dragon’s Den. But were they right to invest? Absolutely! Gone are the days of chemically injected sticky, unfavourable smelling tans, this product provides a beautifully natural tan with the bonus of knowing all of the ingredients are 100% organic. Whilst most of us spend a lot of money on high quality and natural skincare products we continue to use tans that are far from that spec. Now we can literally have the best of both worlds!

intact. The story of Old Croghan Man is not a unique example of how bodies and artefacts were exhumed in remarkable condition after being buried in peat for over 2,000 years. BILL Kenny waited patiently for the scientists to confirm what he already knew – the peat in the Irish bog has the natural ingredients to keep the skin young. The laboratory results were the proof – on paper – that Bill needed and ÓGRA Skincare was born. He now has the science to prove that the peat has natural ingredients that have been long recognised in Ireland. “We’ve made the natural goodness of peat accessible for everyone, no matter where they are in the world,” says Bill.

Tip: The texture of Tan Organic is mega light so great care need to be taken when applying to avoid spillage! Use a mitt and only apply using bottle to mitt as otherwise it could get messy!! www.tanorganic.com

Each of the skincare products is light and easily absorbed by the skin. Beauty experts, celebrities – and most of all – ordinary people of all ages are enjoying the benefits of ÓGRA today.

Ógra Skincare

The Peat face and body mask: this mask left my skin ultra smooth and totally revitalised.

Every so often you try a skincare product that leaves you feeling really excited and Ógra definitely falls into this category. What will capture your imagination more is the unbelievable story behind this brand. An Irishman working on a midlands bog came across a strange shape in the peat one day in 2003. The man was startled when he unearthed a body and immediately called the Gardai. Detectives initially believed the body was that of a recent murder because it was so well preserved in the bog in Croghan, county Offaly. The man had been murdered as they suspected – only he met his brutal death around 2,500 earlier!

Exfoliator: Ógra’s exfoliator does exactly what an exfoliator should do! It completely revitalised my skin and followed by the moisturiser had it feeling brand new!

Scientists were fascinated by this Iron Age man because of how well his body was preserved in the bog. The qualities of the peat managed to keep this prehistoric man’s nails perfectly

Best products:

Moisturiser: Fantastic moisturiser that quenches your skin’s thirst and has an exquisite texture. The striking black and gold packaging of Ógra products let you know that you are going to experience something luxurious and special and the experience certainly doesn’t disappoint. www.ograskincare.com

Navan is Moving to a Zumba® Beat The women of Navan are moving to a Zumba beat these days it seems! We’ve all lived through the dance crazes of line dancing, salsa and step aerobics but none have swept the country as quick as Zumba. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness workout dreamed up by Columbian hip shaker and choreographer Alberto ‘Beto’ Perez. He brought Zumba to Miami in 2001 and now Zumba has trained instructors in 110,000 locations in 125 countries around the world! Paula Bermingham teaches Zumba classes in Navan. She says that the exercise is an added bonus to all the other benefits Zumba can do for women. “The buzz that’s in class is great, it’s an hour where we can all forget about the stresses of everyday life, and it’s a very sociable and friendly atmosphere. The music is so positive it makes everyone smile.” The social aspect and sense of community of Zumba in Navan has even inspired the start of a new blog this week for zumba fans: www.navanzumbafans.blogspot.com. Paula recently asked her class for feedback on what Zumba has

done for them. “For many it is an escape from the pressures of family life and one hour in the week that belongs to them. For others it’s about building confidence, maybe losing weight and before they know it; they’ve made new friends too”. There are Zumba classes to suit all ages. The first Zumbatomic® class is coming to Navan in the coming weeks. Zumbatomic is for children age 4 and upwards and is sure to go down a storm with kids in the Navan area. “Dance is such a powerful means of expression for children” Paula says. It’s a positive way for kids to channel their energy, make new friends and have fun!” Zumba Flavour With Paula is moving to a new venue from the 5th September- Scoil Mhuire, Abbey Rd. Classes run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. For class schedules and more details contact Paula on 0863159830 or log on to Facebook: zumbaflavourwithpaula. Navan Racecourse Navan Racecourse established in 1921, Navan Racecourse known then as Proudstown Park was inaugurated on 16th September. It was controlled by a company under the chairmanship of Major T Collins-Gerrard who was the owner of the famous 1920 Aintree Grand National Winner, Troytown. An innovation, for this county at the time, was that all the offices and weighroom were centrally heated. Today however, Navan Racecourse is a well established National Hunt Racetrack and boasts one of the most impressive courses in Ireland, loved by trainers, owners, jockeys, racegoers and of course the horses. In fact Arkle won his first race here in 1963. Recognised as an excellent pre-Cheltenham track, many of our greatest NH horses have raced and won at Navan and have gone on to win at Cheltenham. Complimented by a full range of suites, bars and restaurants in the main Pavilion, there is something for everyone from corporate entertaining to staff outings, with three panoramic

hospitality suites and a silver service restaurant overlooking the racetrack. Recent refurbishment of the public areas ensure the regular racegoer have all the comforts expected from a modern facility. Disabled facilities include carparking, toilets, viewing ramp and lifts in all buildings. Each raceday is themed and 24th September sees the return of our popular Family Fun Day with lots of attractions for the whole family, Pony Rides, Bouncy Castle Arena, Face Painters, Balloon Modelling, Crisps & Drinks and its all FREE for children under 12 when accompanied by an adult and not forgetting 7 national hunt races. See our advert on the opposite page.

Season of mists…

G

et ready to indulge yourself this autumn with sumptuous clarets and burgundies mixed with tweeds, furs and feathers. The shops are marking the end of the bright, playful summer with earthy clothes that have a hint of masculinity about them: loose trousers in muddy browns, severe greys and rusty reds; flat shoes and chunky boots; expensive cloths layered with hardwearing tweed and decadent furs; and unashamedly clashing colours. River Island’s A/W collection includes sharp trousers and doublebreasted jackets that can be combined with fake furs for an androgynous look that taps into another trend, that of mixing textures

– the more the merrier. Marks and Spencer shows how to mix it up with its fluffy, deep orange coat draped over a gold velvet dress finished with a patchwork of contrasting sequins. For a more feminine approach to autumn there are plenty of dresses inspired by the 1940s that perfectly complement the many tweed coats available, as can be seen at F&F at Tesco. Printed fabrics are everywhere, from birds to flowers to butterflies (New Look has piles of pretty printed dresses to choose from), with a big sub-trend proving to be dots. Lots of them. Our current favourite, however, is Matalan's very sweet dotted dress – snap it up now before it sells out.

GET THE LOOK Kate Moss needs no introduction when mentioned in the same breath as style or fashion. Having carved out a career on the catwalk over 20 years ago, there seems to be no sign of Kate hanging up her crown any time soon with topping practically every style award, pole and gong going! Kate Moss’ style is an inspiration to many fashion-lovers out there. Her unique, effortless and edgy outfits never fail to impress. Here’s how to achieve the recognizable style of this modern day fashion icon!

KATE’S STAPLES PIECES HATS: Kate often tops her outfits with a hat – primarily a black fedora, which makes her look rock n’ roll edgy. BLAZERS: A good blazer is a must-have in any woman’s

wardrobe. It can be used for social event or work affairs and will always be considered a classic and elegant piece. Kate’s blazers are fitted and often have a twist to their lapels.

SKINNY JEANS:

Kate is the woman who made skinny jeans a modern day classic. She’s rarely seen wearing in any kind of jeans. Grays and blacks are her favorite!

SUNGLASSES: Even though they may be occasionally

exchanged for a pair of your classic, big sunglasses, Ray Ban Wayfarers are a vital part of any Kate Moss inspired outfit. Any outfit instantly becomes more rock n’ roll with these iconic sunglasses!

WAISTCOATS:

Kate has always been a fan of waistcoats and wears them with everything from jeans to dresses. The waistcoat is a very cool piece to any ensemble and will give a trendy boost to a causal outfit.

BOOTS: Ankle or thigh high, boots are the ultimate wearable item of footwear you will ever own. Whether you are going out to meet friends for lunch or having a rare night out on the town, boots will be your best friend. 1. Animal print jacket @ Littlewoods €65 2. Kiss and Make up Katy Perry Okay, we get it: She kissed a girl and she liked it. With those sinfully red lips that have become her signature, it’d be difficult to kiss anyone without leaving a mark! Katy Perry’s makeup and hair call to mind other red carpet beauties like Rose McGowan and Dita Von Teese.

Fair skin, luscious lips and shiny raven hair are the key to copying this Katy Perry look. Choose a foundation that blends effortlessly with your natural skin tone and skip bronzer to keep the look as pale as possible, opting instead for translucent powder. Blush should be applied to the contours of the cheeks, not the apples. Pick a soft baby pink for a look that harks back to the 1950s. Katy Perry’s makeup is absolutely inspired by sexy pin-ups of yore. On lips, choose a bold magenta or cherry red lipstick to electrify onlookers. At the other end of the spectrum is nude or baby pink. Apply one layer, blot, then repeat. Set it with translucent powder. Apply one more layer, but skip the gloss to keep the look alluringly matte. Eyes are bereft without full strips of false lashes, and brows should be polished with a noticeable arch. And voila! The ultimate Katy inspired look!

Glenda Gilson

Irene Roche caught up with one of Ireland’s most stylish women, Glenda Gilson and she revealed some of her best style secrets exclusively to Navan Life! Describe your style in three words. Cool (I hope!), rock chick (kinda), individual (I don’t follow trends). Which beauty items can you currently not live without? Rimmel Sun-Shimmer. It’s available in all chemists and it’s cheap! Do you believe in fashion icons? If so, who is yours? Yes! Kate Moss. She’s unique every-time. I adore her style. If you ever had the opportunity to create a fashion line would you do it? And what would it consist of? Yes and it would be scarves, tee shirts and jeans. These are items I love to wear. What advice would you give to Irish women looking to embrace current fashion trends? Don’t!! Just because it’s a trend doesn’t mean you have to wear it. One it

mightn’t suit you and two you end up wasting money on clothes that will date. Try to buy cheap for everyday things like tee shirts and jumpers etc. But I think it helps when you spend a bit more on winter coat for example as it WILL last longer. What’s that saying; buy cheap, buy twice. Glenda, your skin always looks glowing, do you have a beauty tip you’d like to share with our readers? If mascara smudges on your face...leave it!!! Wait for about five minutes to let it dry and it will come off easy. Rub it off straight away and it will ruin your make-up. And last but not least, you’ve travelled to some amazing places. Which city do you consider to be the fashion capital of the world? Paris, London and New York. Three different types of fashion and three trends I like!!

Style Q&A

Navan Life Magazine’s style fairy godmother, Irene Roche is here to solve all of your fashion woes! Hi there, I have a question for Irene. I am going to a hen party in October with a bunch of really stylish girls and I want to look the part. I rarely go shopping myself but will be looking to pick up some new pieces soon. Can you tell me what’s going to be a big trend? What are the upcoming trends I should watch out for? I’m slim and I’m aged 29. Thank you! Susan, Navan. Well, the biggest trends hitting the Catwalk this season are lace and leather. They’re both really different from the other so you’re sure to like at least one of them. However, if you like both, clash them together! Leather is a great material to roughen up a cute lace dress especially when it’s in the form of a leather jacket! Miss Selfridge is doing leather panelled trousers at €60 that would immediately jazz up your A/W wardrobe as they’re so versatile. Add heels and an off the shoulder top to complete the look and you’re ready to go. There’s also a lot of focus on the androgynous look. Mannish attire such as tuxedo jackets, brogues and leather waistcoats are being reinvented and reintroduced, so shop around and pick carefully as these are trends that can be hard to nail but as you say you are a slim build so it should work for you! Good luck! Hi, I work in an office so a black suit is normally what I’d wear to and from work five days a week. Do you have any ideas you could share with me on how to liven it up a little? It can be very boring wearing the same thing every day but it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to experiment with colour. Help! Sheana, Tara Glen. First of all, get rid of your black trouser suit trousers! They’re plain boring and have been done a hundred times before. Swap them for a skinny leg trouser or even better if you can get away with it - a peg trouser. These will instantly inject style into your work ensemble and even more so when worn with a

heeled shoe. If you’re a fan of skirts try experimenting with a pencil version as these are most flattering on all body shapes. Regarding your suit jacket I’d make sure it’s as fitted as possible. You don’t want to appear sloppy or lost in an over sized jacket. Invest in statement brooches and necklaces to transform your look. Adding a neck scarf is another approach you could think about and at the moment that seems very season appropriate with this drab weather we’ve been having! I have spent the whole summer throwing all my day time essentials into my over-sized summery canvas bag so I’m looking to ditch it for something classier for winter. Are there certain styles or trends I should watch out for? What would you recommend? Great magazine! Thank you. Georgia, Athlumney. For the latest in shapes and fabrics check out the current runways or magazines and get acquainted with what’s happening right now. Think satchel, box, office, envelope, shoulder and clutch - each bag is redone for each season, so make sure you stay up to date on the latest looks. River Island, New Look, A-wear and Dunnes are just some of the shops in Navan Town Centre that are stocking these styles at great prices. With satchel and envelope styles being hot right now check out your local charity shops for a more vintage style. Plus, you’ll have a one off that no-one else will have. Just be sure to find a style that suits you rather than just buying into a trend! Hi Irene. I’m confused!! Can you please explain for me what “Dressy Casual” means? I’m lost, Sarah Stackallen. It’s an unconvincing oxymoron usually asked by the host that does nothing but confuse their guests! In my opinion, but obliging their request is always best. Well, to totally simplify it here are some do’s and don’ts that may

help you. This is a dress code that does not permit the wearing of trainers, flipflops, jeans, shorts, denim jackets or teeshirts to any “Dress Casual” specified events. Normally females will opt for dresses (loose or body-con), skirts, flowy tops, and wedges, low to high heeled shoes with hair and make-up done as creatively as you want. For the males, suit jackets, khakis, chinos and loafers are the safest (and most popular) option to go for. But remember to enjoy the day and feel comfortable in your own skin!

Beauty Review Fish Pedicure Originating from springs in turkey the fish are known as doctor fish for their healing benefits for people with skin problems for the past 400 years. They have no teeth so therefore nibble gently on dry or dead skin exfoliating feet in a natural way rather than using abrasive rasps. They stimulate acupuncture points on the feet increasing blood circulation and relaxing the body! The tanks have their own individual filtration system ensuring maximum hygiene for fish and customers.

Myscara The MYscara product is a safe and eye friendly lash coating. It is applied professionally and has a similar effect to traditional mascara but lasts weeks. It won’t smudge or budge no matter how much you get them wet. You will get 2-3 weeks before the coating starts to wear off. The treatment takes around 30 minutes. You can have 1 or 2 coats for a natural look or more coats for a thicker more dramatic look. How many of us spend an eternity every night trying to take off our eye make-up? Mascara is by far the toughest make up product to remove but the one that can transform a look completely! Myscara is for you is for you if you love the look but the hate the mess of traditional mascara. My lashes were so natural, beautiful and above all my own! The application was relaxing and enjoyable and my ready- made lashes lasted for weeks. Contact Sandra in Glam Madame, 26 Railway Street Navan on 046 903 1853 www.glammadame.ie

Having not experienced a fish pedicure before I was definitely intrigued at the prospect of my feet being nibbled by these little creatures!! Glam Madame’s proprietor, Sandra Carroll welcomed me into her beautiful salon and thoroughly cleansed my feet before they entered the tank. The sensation was a little odd at first but at all not all uncomfortable. I was fascinated at the amazing job that these little fish were carrying out. The session lasted 30 minutes and I could not believe the difference with my skin. Although I am ashamed to say, I hardly ever get foot treatments so I didn’t think the affects could be that noticeable but I was amazed to see how soft and smooth they were. Sandra recommended that I continue with another couple of sessions to really improve their condition. If you are at all ticklish you will get a real buzz from this so expect to have a few chuckles! Glam Madame has two tanks so come in with a friend for some amusement! €15 for 15 mins €25 for 30 a booking for two :30 mins - €45

Beauty Advice

Glam Madame’s Sandra Carroll answers your beauty queries! Hi there, I have fair skin and I can never seem to find a foundation that suits my skin tone. Any advice?, Georgia , Flower Hill, Hi Georgia, Fuchsia offer a variety of foundations suitable for pale skin tones, the best of which I think is the mineral foundation in “bare” as it provides coverage and sun protection factor for pale skin tones. Mineral powder just brushes onto the skin giving exceptional coverage, which can be built up according to personal preference. Alternatively if you prefer a liquid foundation Artdeco Rich Treatment no 28 is perfect for fair skin, it is light reflecting with high coverage leaving complexion soft and fresh. It is also good to remember when testing foundation for your tone to do it along the jaw line and should be checked in natural light if possible. Why does skin need to be exfoliated? Sharon, Blackcastle, Skin exfoliates itself naturally. A teenager may totally regenerate their skin every two weeks, as we age however, this process becomes slower and by the age of 30 it may take up to 30 days to regenerate the external layer of skin. Adding an exfoliant to your skincare regime aids this process to improve skin condition. Exfoliation removes dulling skin cells to reveal a more vibrant complexion. With so many exfoliants on the Market today it is advisable to have a skin therapist recommend one to suit your skin type.

products applied to the skin and no heat used do therefore It is possible to go over an area more than once. Threading can be used above and below the brow giving it the characteristic groomed appearance. What is acne? Acne is caused by a build up of dead skin cells and natural oil that bind together and block pores. The acne bacteria feed off this mixture which then becomes inflamed. There are many factors to be considered with acne:

•lifestyle •stress •hormones •diet •cosmetics Acne sufferers have a slower exfoliation rate than usual so this contributes to congestion in the skin, and they also can have a slower healing process. It is essential that an acne skin type be prescribed a suitable skin care regime!

About Sandra What is the benefit of threading over waxing or tweezing? Aoife, Canterbrook. Threading is an ancient method of hair removal originating from India. It would be favoured over tweezing as even the finest of hairs can be removed leaving the area very clean. As the hair can be removed in a line it allows excellent definition on the brow. It would be preferable to waxing as there is no

RTE Presenter Congratulates The Academy

Meath’s top performing arts school receives praise from RTE’S young people’s personality for outstanding achievements The Academy of Performing Arts held their Annual Awards Ceremony recently to congratulate all students who excelled in L.A.M.D.A. (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) Acting & Musical Theatre exams. An amazing 150 students were thrilled with their results and The Academy’s founder Sheila Garvey couldn’t be more proud. “Hard work, commitment and dedication certainly paid off,” says Sheila. Students aged 5-17 who attend classes at The Academy in Navan, Ratoath, Dunderry and Kells collected their certificates on stage at an awards ceremony held in Trim Castle Hotel, who kindly sponsored the event. Diana Bunici, RTE’s Elev8 presenter and singer

songwriter Kathy Crinion were delighted to present the awards. Diana’s quirky speech went down a treat and questions raised about her interviewing Jedward brought the room to laughter! Many of the students were already familiar with the young presenter, having been to RTE themselves on several occasions thanks to The Academy. Kathy Crinion congratulated all the musical students and said, “The opportunities that Sheila and her team provide for the children attending classes at The Academy are phenomenal”. She performed two songs beautifully and got a brilliant response from the whole audience. A selection of students demonstrated their amazing ability and talent while performing solo acting and

singing pieces. Other special guests included Lisa Tyrell & Pascal Aluzzi from ‘Why Not Dance Company’ who performed a lyrical jazz piece “Teenage Love” choreographed by Lisa Tyrrell, Artistic Director. Sheila Garvey, director of the Academy said, “I am delighted that all students received such high marks and I am very proud of their achievements”. A new term is starting at The Academy in September. If you would like to learn the latest funky dance moves in HipHop, Tap and Jazz, sing your heart out and learn all the techniques and skills required to be a great actor, call 046 90 73554, email info@theacademy. ie or log onto www.theacademy.ie.

Labfitness – A revolution in fitness By Sally Harding Since starting her business only a short number of years ago, Laura Armada Buch and her team at Labfitness in Drogheda have redefined what fitness means in Ireland. Home to the top pole fitness school in the country, and now holding the master licence for Anti Gravity Yoga, Labfitness prides itself on having highly qualified and professional instructors that provide amazing classes that achieve unbelievable results in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Exciting classes How many of us join a gym that somehow inevitably always becomes too much hassle to go to? We are not home from work in time; we’re too tired, have to walk the dog or just cannot stand another round with the treadmill! If you are weary of the same old routine in a gym, try a class at Labfitness and you will never look back. With the autumn timetable featuring classes like Kettlebells, skinny jeans, aerobics and tone, zumba (with a real Latino!) and step ( Laura’s famous for this class!) there is a huge variety that will keep you interested and motivated.

Anti Gravity Yoga Always on the lookout for the next big thing in fitness, Laura Armada discovered Anti Gravity back in 2008 when she travelled to New York in search of new trends to add to the ever expanding Labfitness timetable, which offers the widest variety of formats in the country. Just a short time later, Laura was offered the master license for Ireland and the UK, which means all instructors in both the UK and Ireland, will be trained by Labfitness. So successful this new technique has become, Laura last year opened brand new state of the art studios in Mell and has just opened her first studio in Dublin situated in the Liffey Trust beside the 02. “The technique is a cross between yoga, dance, gymnastics, Pilates and aerial arts. AntiGravity has created a complete workout that is certain to get you in shape while realigning you from the compression of gravity,” says Laura

Pole Fitness Labfitness has successfully changed the face of pole fitness in Ireland from something that once was seen as seedy to being regarded as respected and hugely beneficial technique on par with gymnastiques as their instructors are fully trained and qualified professionals who are committed to providing the best possible classes for clients. If you are

expecting to see high heels, disco lights and short ensembles then you are in the wrong place! Pole at this studio is all about the fitness technique! Laura’s passion for what she does is evident and you know it won’t be long before she has another trick up her sleeve in the form of innovative classes that usually come to Labfitness first before anywhere else! If you want to enquire about classes in Drogheda or Dublin or would like to train as an Anti Gravity instructor contact Labfitness @ laura@labfitness.com or call 087 631 4752

I could never have imagined how successful our curtain and blind making business would be, but as we offer a complimentary interior design and measuring service, I think this is part of the reason why our business has gone from strength to strength. Most customers have a very good idea of the style they would like to evoke in their home and with a little help from us throughout the process, but most especially at concept and design stage, we believe our input can make a significant difference, to the overall outcome of any interior project”. “Projects vary in budget and in size but to us the key to making a difference for our customers is to get to the heart of what they are really looking for, to find the expression of their personality, while creating an evocative and comfortable living space, while working together with them hand-in-hand”. It is not surprising then that their mantra “you can get the look and style you want, on the budget you have to spend, when you have our help, expertise and many years of experience to draw from”, is thoroughly evocative of the overall impression and experience you enjoy when visiting Ebonyrose Interiors. For Haley it would seem that her priorities are not just about the furniture, accessories and advice they provide, according to her, her customers are what it is all about. “First and foremost, we would like to take our fifth birthday as an opportunity to celebrate our customers and to thank them for the loyalty and support they have given us for five years now. Our customers have helped us to grow and have provided us with some fabulous projects, small and large, which have helped to make the past 5 years a thoroughly enjoyable and creative experience. It is with their help that we are happy and proud to say that “we are truly fabulous at five”.

With an ever inspiring eye to the future Haley is happy to add that the “Autumn/Winter season is just upon us and we are delighted to say that we consider ourselves to have prepared one of the best displays of stock yet and of course we are really looking forward to the impact this will make and the reaction we will get from our customers, while also working together with them, focusing on making a stylish and individually personal difference to houses and homes all over Navan, Meath and beyond”. ebonyrose interiors academy street navan co meath ph: +353 (0)46 9070655 email: info@ebonyrose.ie web: www.ebonyrose.ie find us on facebook
