Welcome to the second issue of Navan Life Magazine and what a month it has been! We have been inundated with good wishes and positive feedback from businesses and readers alike. From the fantastic response to our launch issue is it clear that a good quality magazine with plenty of local information about businesses, events and all things interesting is just what Navan needed. We hope we can keep improving and evolving and we hope you enjoy our latest offering. It’s that time of year again when going back to school is just around the corner so if you want some ideas on how to make the next few weeks special before the dreaded school runs commence again take some inspiration from my article on the best kid’s activities around. WHAT’S ON IN AUGUST
Gigs Navan helps Tara to rock this summer with Ryan Sheridan Tara Rocks will host a fine collection of musical talent from the county on the 27th of August and have a very special guest Ryan Sheridan. For just €15 you will be treated to an all day event from 2pm till close, with full access to all 3 areas. Tara Na Ri are putting on a big show to mark the end of summer in style. The festival will take place in 3 venues onsite. The main stage will be in the stables behind the pub and will provide a cool location for acts such as The whatmans, Simon Fagan, The Furry Gilberts, The Great Simones, Icarus Sun and many more. The Stables venue inside Tara Na Ri will play host to Frenzy, followed by an open mic session hosted by Gigs Navan’s very own philip Brady. The Lounge will have an open jammin session which will be open to all musicians and will be managed by Noel Nevin, Stephen Ledwich, Suzanne Lee and others on the day. Following which a Christy Moore tribute act will play some delights before the big line up on the main stage. Something for everyone of all musical tastes, you must agree! In deciding the line up for this unique festival, the question arose of who should be the main support act for Ryan Sheridan and it was suggested that ‘The Battle of the Bands’ would provide a great opportunity to an up & coming original band and has been greatly supported by the Whatmans especially Padar Mulvey, one of the guest judges. This battle takes place 5th & 6th of August where the audience votes their favourite 3 bands through. The Final then takes place on the 20th of August where 3 guest judges (Padar Mulvey, Andrew Wilkinson & Paul McCarthy) and the audience will decide who gets the honour of supporting Ryan Sheridan! Stylist Irene Roche comes to the rescue for all your style predictements and sheds some light on the questions we all want answered! Are leggings still in style? Any tips on how to make them look sophisticated? Yes, leggings will always be fashionable just remember to jazz them up. Pair them with a long top that covers your bum and wear with heels and a clutch. For a more casual approach, wear with a summery cardi and wedges. The biggest fashion faux pas you can make regarding leggings is wearing them with trainers and a short top. Forget jeggings! It’s leggings all the way. Good luck!
I have a wedding and christening approaching this summer and was wondering if you had any tips for me? I have a limited budget and was hoping to not spend a fortune. We girls will always look for a reason to have just one more ensemble in our wardrobe. How about recycling what we’ve already got? Take a simple dress you might have and add a statement piece to it. It could be an oversized necklace or beautiful shrug. Adding red lippie is always a good idea too! Think about

After years of living in black, I decided to embrace colour and now I’m loving the colour block trend. I’m petite in size so I don’t want to get it wrong. Any advice? Well, heels are a good place to start. High ones! You don’t want to get lost in this trend so keep it safe. As your petite I would advise that you keep any bold colours to one piece per outfit. Try wearing hot pink peg trousers with a loose white vest, a purple top with summery shorts or by adding a big colourful satchel bag. Penneys are doing great things with this trend at the moment so it would be an affordable way to try it out till you discover what’s right and comfortable for you!
I have big arms and so I hate wearing dresses on family occasions. It makes me so uncomfortable. What can I wear instead that will be equally dressy? The dreaded bat wing that most girls can identify with! I wouldn’t say having big arms rules out wearing dresses at all. How about a short tunic dress with sleeves? Or adding a shawl or pashmina over your shoulders? This can be very effective as a cover up. Also, how about investing in a pencil skirt and adding a bright colourful blouse? Paired with heels this will look just as fabulous too. At the moment all eyes seem to be on the Duchess of Cambridge and if your take some inspiration from her (she recently expressed a firm preference for sleeved dresses) your sure to find something similar, especially as she is a huge fan of the high-street. Red Mountain Open Farm The Fee Family invite you to visit their Red Mountain Open Farm. The hill is called Red Mountain.

Battle of the Boyne site The Battle of the Boyne was fought on July 1, 1690 between King William III and King James II on the banks of the river Boyne, Drogheda in Co Louth. See the landscape in which the battle was fought and learn the history behind what was the largest number of troops ever deployed on an Irish battlefield. A tour takes you to the various sites used in the battle. You’ll visit both camps, the site of the river crossing and the Jacobite retreat route among others. Alternatively you can walk through the site yourself. The site also has a display of replica 17th Century weaponry.

Beaulieu House & Car Museum Beaulieu House has been home to the same family since 1650 and is now open to visitors who can view this rare survivor of Irish history as well as a rare car museum. The house is the family home of racing driver Gabriel Konig, famous for her exploits in MG Midgets in the late 60’s, Camero in the early 70’s and who continues in modern historic racing with an A40 Farian and a very special and unique pair of 70’s Vauxhall’s. These and other cars have now been brought together to form a Museum of classic cars together with photographs, memorabilia etc. The house is open to visitors from 1st May to mid September and a tour is available of the house and garden. Admission fees apply to both these and the car museum. Beaulieu House is also available for parties, corporate functions, conferences and weddings.

Ardgillan Castle Ardgillan Castle and Demesne is situated in North County Dublin on an elevated coastline between Balbriggan and
Skerries, 20 miles north of Dublin City. The park consists of 194 acres of rolling open grassland, mixed woodland and gardens, overlooking the Irish Sea with views of Mourne Mountains to the north and Lambay to the south-east. Ardgillan is a sanctuary for many species of animals, mammals and birds for which the wooded areas provide a safe retreat from surrounding agricultural land. Today the demesne is a stunning visitor attraction with a range of facilities the public can avail of, including; Castle Tours Tea Rooms (wheelchair accessible) and Playground Shop. State-ofthe-art Children’s Playground, Children’s Parties (Historically themed) Magnificent Gardens and Spectacular Cycle and Walking Paths. The gardens are in three main parts, the formal Rose Garden and the Potentilla collection to the west of the castle, and the walled garden to the north-west which contains herb, vegetable, fruit, and ornamental sections. The state-of-the-art playground was opened in 2006 and has over 30 pieces of play equipment to enjoy from cradle swings for the very young to a large climbing space net for older children. THE ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS There are not many activities out there that instil confidence in a child, a sense of pride in their achievement and encourage and foster their talent or skill all while they are having fun! That’s exactly what The Academy of Performing Arts aims to do and with 300 students attending classes in three venues in Meath every week, the team are obviously fulfilling their objective! Sheila Garvey set up the academy seven years ago having embarked on a successful career in the arts travelling the UK and America performing in shows like as ‘La Cage Aux Folles’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘42nd Street’, ‘Westside Story’, ‘The Boyfriend’, ‘Carmen’, ‘Oklahoma and many more. Sheila started dancing at the age of three and is fully trained in dance, drama theatre studies and fitness. “We offer professional tuition in singing, dance and drama to students aged 3-18 years in Navan, Ratoath and Kells. In dance we teach Hip hop, Tap and Jazz and we cover all area of drama, including speech, audition technique and over all confidence building,” says Sheila.
LAMDA Accolade As well as the fun and excitement of classes, students also take annual exams with LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) in musical theatre (singing) and drama. “We have just received the results of recent exams and yet again another 100% of students passed with many of them receiving distinctions,” says Sheila. “There is always something to look forward to at the academy like our shows or plays. It gives the students an opportunity to perform in front of a large audience and we spend a lot of time rehearsing and working as a team. Our classes are fantastic for building confidence, developing life skills and are great source of fitness for children,” says Sheila.
Summer Camp On August 8th - 12th The Academy of performing Arts will run a summer
camp in the Solstice Arts Centre from 10am – 2pm for the unbelievable price of €59. The summer camp is an ideal way to give your child a taste of performing classes as well as being a week packed full of fun. Sheila is hoping to build her own studio at the rear of her fancy dress & party premises “Bananas” on Railway Street explaining that a sole location for her academy would have many benefits. “It would be amazing to have our own base to access our costume rail for shows, to have professional dance floors, mirrored studios and allow us to hold a larger variety of classes for adults and children.” Sheila also has an agency giving people of all ages the opportunity to audition for TV shows, commercials and films. NAVAN LIVE 2011 Navan Live 2010 was the biggest music event to hit Navan last year and this year organisers are out in force to ensure that Navan Live 2011 goes down in history as one of the best live music events in the country! With acts like the Saw Doctors, Sharon Shannon & Big Band, Shane MacGowan & Damien Dempsey, Simon Fagan and Eugene Donegan sharing the stage last year, big boots have to be filled; however, the Profile Music Group hasn’t let us down having announced that the incredible UB40 are this year’s headline act. With Henrietta Game, Paul Brady and Declan O’Rourke providing an impressive support set, Navan Live 2011 is every music lover’s haven.
The main act Named after a British unemployment benefit form, pop-reggae band UB40 was formed in a welfare line in 1978, and its multiracial line up reflected the working-class community its members came from. The band consolidated its street credibility with political topics appealing to dissatisfied youth and got a boost from fans of the waning 2-Tone ska-revival movement. Brothers Robin (lead guitar) and Ali Campbell (guitar, lead vocals) formed the centerpiece of
the group, which also included bassist Earl Falconer, keyboardist Mickey Virtue, saxophonist Brian Travers, drummer Jim Brown, percussionist Norman Hassan, and toaster Terence “Astro” Wilson.
Several albums of original material sold well in the U.K., but only respectably in the U.S., where the group’s biggest hit was a Top 30 cover of Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” featuring the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
The band purchased its first instruments with compensation money Ali Campbell received after a bar fight, even though few of the members knew how to play them. But by the end of the year, the group was invited to tour with the Pretenders. Their “Food For Thought” single reached the U.K. Top Ten in 1980, beginning a long streak of chart appearances. Signing Off and Present Arms were big sellers in Britain, if not America, and addressed the political issues of the day in songs like “One in Ten,” a Top Ten hit blasting Margaret Thatcher for the country’s unemployment rate. 1983’s Labour of Love, an album of reggae cover songs, gave the group its first chart album in America and first number one U.K. hit with Neil Diamond’s “Red Red Wine.”
In 1988, the group performed “Red Red Wine” at a Nelson Mandela tribute concert, and a Phoenix radio station trotted the single out for a second goround. Listener response was far more enthusiastic, and “Red Red Wine” reentered the charts and went all the way to the top. Finally having hit on a way to conquer the lucrative American market, UB40 responded with another covers album, Labour of Love II, which produced Top Ten singles with versions of the Temptations’ “The Way You Do the Things You Do” and Al Green’s “Here I Am (Come and Take Me).” The group scored a huge hit in America with Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” which was initially featured in the Sharon Stone film Sliver and spent seven weeks at number one.

1.Tell me a little about the background to Navan Live, who had the idea etc? Navan Live is the idea of Profile Music Group. We are based in Navan Town and have over the years ran many music events. Navan Live was developed as 1 large concert but also the live word allows us to expand to music events around the town for those weeks’ events. It’s currently in its 2nd year where we had sold out shows to The Saw Doctors & Sharon Shannon in 2010
2. Why do you think Navan is good place to have such an event? Navan & Meath have a large population and apart from your yearly Slane Concert, there is no major music event in the County on this scale.
3. What is happening over the event and what acts will be playing? Music Acts playing are UB40, Henrietta Game, Paul Brady, Declan O’Rourke, The Lost Brothers, Red Queen Contest, The Whatmans, Hunters Edge, Outside The Box and many more While music is one aspect, Solstice Arts Centre will be hosting a range of Free Lunch time gigs in their Café and Meath Arts Group will have displays around the town all week from 12th – 18th September, while the Aisling Group International Charity Organisation will be hosting a 10KM Charity Run on 18th Sept
4. What can people expect if they go? An enjoyable weekend with a lighting rig and sound system to match any venue or arena in the country!
5. How do you feel about UB40 headlining? Delighted! Couldn’t have asked for a better headliner!
6. Will it benefit businesses in Navan? Definitely, Taxis, Buses, Hotel, B&B’s will all benefit from a couple of thousand people entering Navan over that weekend.
7. What are your hopes for the event? That it is a huge success and hopefully see Navan Live 2012 kick into action come October!
