Melissa Backus– Williams High School What was your first artistic memory? Drawing on the walls of my bedroom when I was a little kid. Probably around age 4 I discovered that I loved to draw on the walls of the house- I guess I just couldn’t contain my

need to create! So as a way to keep me from drawing all over the house, my parents decided to let me have free range of the walls in my bedroom. What lead you into art ed? Art has always been a major part of my life. I find solace in being creative- in any way. So naturally when I started thinking about a career, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my life than teaching kids how to find that same comfort in artmaking. Also, I think I would have been disappointed if my life didn’t involve art every day. What is your medium of choice? I have a BFA in sculpture, but these days my passion lies in mixed media. Wheth-

Why Original Artworks Move Us More than Reproductions
What is your top goal for the year?
My most current for fun read was The Circle by Dave Eggers. I highly recommend it.
Survive! I am a first year teacher and I’m really working hard on engaging my with students and building relationships that will improve their overall experience with art…all while keeping my head above water.
What was your first artistic memory? My mom was an artist. I remember always having arts and crafts materials around me, and I was never refused if I wanted crayons at the store. (It was the same way with books.) She always had time for art and reading. I still love both….and her, beyond measure. What lead you into art ed? I taught Language Arts for 16 years. I was also a Family Therapist for many years where I also used art with children and families. I have always used my art education and experience in the classroom. When an art teacher position came available I jumped at the opportunity! It felt like the right thing at the right time…..I was right. I love it! What is your medium of choice? I love Prismacolor. I do a lot of Acrylic and mixed media; but, I’d rather be “Prismacoloring” any time of day! Who is your artistic inspiration? My Inspiration comes from a mentor/teacher of mine. Her name was Cynthia Day Neely. She was one of the greatest photorealist I’ve ever seen. It was my good fortune to know her before her all too soon passing. Share a current read? Artistic, Ed, or Fun. I am currently reading Dust by Patricia Cornwell…Probably should have considered being a CSI or a Forensic Artist. What is your top goal for the year? This is my first year with Plano ISD. I want to learn the ropes…. and I want my students to love to make art! I would love it if every child took away at least one technique with which they felt really comfortable and proud. I would love it if they all said they couldn’t wait to learn more next year!
