ABOUT BARNARD COLLEGE

Over 130 years ago, Barnard became the first college in New York City—and one of the few in the world—where women could receive the same liberal arts education available to men. Today, Barnard is one of the most selective academic institutions in the United States and remains at the forefront of higher education, offering a rigorous liberal arts foundation to young women whose curiosity, drive, and exuberance set them apart. Ours is a diverse, intellectual community in a singular learning environment that provides the best of all worlds: small, intimate classes in a collaborative setting dedicated to the advancement of women, with the vast resources of Columbia University just steps away—all in the heart of vibrant New York City.

Each year, on our leafy, four-acre campus on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, our world-class faculty of teacher-scholars educates over 2,500 inspired and intrepid undergraduate women who go on to achieve great things. Throughout our history, Barnard graduates have reached the highest levels of success in the arts, business, government, and sciences, and they have led meaningful, lasting change through their work as activists and advocates.

Barnard maintains an unwavering commitment to meeting our students’ personal and intellectual needs, which continue to evolve according to the demands of the times. The Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, established in 2020 and set to occupy renovated spaces in Barnard Hall, is a centralized hub for Barnard’s many wellness-related initiatives and supports a 360-degree perspective of personal well-being: financial, physical, and mental. The College has also committed to enhancing our support of student and faculty scientists through the development of the Roy and Diana Vagelos Science Center, a stateof-the-art facility that will secure Barnard’s eminence in the sciences and propel our programs into an exciting new era of discovery and innovation. With these and other exceptional resources in place, Barnard is uniquely positioned to educate new generations of women leaders—individuals who are prepared and determined to take on our world’s most pressing and complex challenges.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, Welcome to Barnard’s 2023 Annual Gala!

I’m very excited to celebrate the Barnard family and the College’s extraordinary students with you this evening. Our incredible honorees—Maryam Banikarim ’89 and Andrew Lerner P’21, Teresa and Jone Chen P’17, P’20, and Serena ’91 and Shawn Levy P’21—have joined us tonight, and I’m so pleased that we can recognize their outstanding contributions to the College. Their multigenerational commitments to furthering Barnard’s mission have been transformative for our students and programming, and we are profoundly grateful.

Since its founding, Barnard has upheld a firm commitment to the advancement of women. Empowering students through education, mentorship, and community has allowed our alumnae to transform our world and create meaningful change across all industries. Our campus, home to a range of viewpoints, ideas, and voices, encourages productive dialogue and collaboration—critical interactions that inform our students’ perspectives and shape their lives The wide-ranging achievements of our alumnae continue to affirm the quality and impact of a Barnard education and underscore the importance of our Annual Gala.

Last year’s event raised nearly $2.5 million toward financial aid for our students, and this year offers another opportunity to strengthen the College’s scholarship resources. Over this past year alone, Barnard provided over $60 million in scholarship funds. With your help, we can continue to ensure that qualified students from all backgrounds and financial circumstances can access a lifechanging education at Barnard. Your presence tonight is a vote of confidence in our mission and an investment in the College’s future.

Looking back over my time at Barnard, I’m in awe of everything we have accomplished together. It is a privilege to be a part of this vibrant, dynamic community—a worldwide network wholly committed to expanding the opportunities available to women. By sharing your love of the College with new generations of Barnard alumnae, you have permanently strengthened our family. You inspire me and so many others, and I’m grateful to all of you.

Thank you again for joining us this evening. On behalf of all the deserving students who will benefit from your generous participation, I thank you for believing in Barnard.

INTRODUCING THE PRESIDENT-ELECT

LAURA ROSENBURY

A leading women and gender legal theorist, Laura Rosenbury has been appointed Barnard College’s ninth president, effective July 1, 2023.

Previously, she served for eight years as the Dean and Levin, Mabie & Levin Professor of Law at University of Florida Levin College of Law. She was the first woman in that role.

One of her goals was to raise the national and international profile of Florida’s flagship law school. Under her leadership, UF Law extended its reach around the globe, increased incoming applications by 200 percent, enrolled seven of the most accomplished and diverse classes in UF Law’s 113-year history, and hired 39 new faculty members. Since 2016, UF Law has jumped 27 spots in the US News rankings and now ranks among the top 25 law schools in the nation.

Before joining the UF Law community, Rosenbury was a professor of law and vice dean at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law. She also has served as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, and University of Chicago Law School.

Rosenbury’s research and teaching focus on the law of private relationships, exploring how law and social norms interact in family law, employment discrimination law, and property law. Her work has been published in the Yale Law Journal, Michigan Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Cornell Law Review, and in many other journals and books.

Rosenbury was elected to the American Law Institute in 2010 and was named a fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2014. In addition, she has taught courses on negotiation, nonadversarial communication, team building, and leadership for practicing lawyers and other executives.

Prior to entering academia, Rosenbury was a litigation associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City and clerked for Judge Carol Bagley Amon of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York and Judge Dennis Jacobs of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Rosenbury received her AB summa cum laude in women’s studies from HarvardRadcliffe College and her JD cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she served as a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review

Outside of work, she enjoys gardening and traveling. If at all possible, she also completes the New York Times crossword puzzle and spelling bee every day.

FROM THE GALA CO-CHAIRS

Good evening!

We are thrilled to welcome you to Barnard’s 2023 Annual Gala. Whether you are here celebrating at 583 Park Avenue or joining us virtually, we’re grateful that you’ve chosen to spend your time with us tonight in support of Barnard’s remarkable students.

Throughout the evening, our program will recognize three Barnard families that truly exemplify what it means to be part of the Barnard community. We are excited to present each family with the Frederick A.P. Barnard Award in recognition of their efforts that have inspired multigenerational commitment to the College. We deeply admire the extraordinary dedication demonstrated by Maryam Banikarim ’89 and Andrew Lerner P’21, Teresa and Jone Chen P’17, P’20, and Serena ’91 and Shawn Levy P’21, and we look forward to honoring them this evening.

The idea of family has played a powerful role in the lives of Barnard women. Our alumnae are bound by a common experience, and this legacy of excellence spans all generations. The College’s global community is supportive, generous, and engaged—values that we share with new generations of alumnae. We also pass down a deep love for Barnard, and this is perhaps our most meaningful vote of confidence in the College and its future.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has helped bring this year’s celebration to life. Each year, the Barnard Annual Gala raises critical funds for financial aid—resources that ensure that smart, talented students from all economic backgrounds are able to access the transformative power of a Barnard education. Your participation is critical to the advancement of Barnard’s mission, and we are grateful for your enthusiasm and engagement.

With appreciation,

10

FREDERICK A.P. BARNARD AWARD

Born in 1809, Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard was a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer who wrote poetry, played the piano and flute, and, when he began to lose his hearing, learned sign language and became a teacher for the deaf. In 1864, he became the tenth president of Columbia College.

From his earliest teaching years, he championed the higher education of women, and, at Columbia, he used his regular reports to the trustees to lobby for women’s equal education. In 1883, the Columbia board passed a resolution to create a separate “course of collegiate study equivalent to the course given to young men,” and in 1889, shortly after Barnard’s death, Barnard College was established as an independent institution affiliated with Columbia. Frederick A.P. Barnard’s legacy of advocacy for women’s higher education has endured, with Barnard College remaining an international center of academic excellence for women to this day.

The Frederick A.P. Barnard Award is presented to someone who is realistic and visionary, tenacious and compassionate, and devoted to helping others realize their full potential.

HONOREES

MARYAM BANIKARIM ’89 AND ANDREW LERNER P’21

At the height of the pandemic, Maryam Banikarim and her husband, Andy Lerner, co-founded NYCNext, a nonprofit organization of 600+ volunteers dedicated to supporting NYC in the aftermath of the pandemic to build community, bring joy, and change the narrative about the city. They created New York State of Mind, the Emmy Award-winning music video that features Idina Menzel, Stephen Colbert, Sara Bareilles, Suzanne Vega, and many others. In 2022, Maryam and Andy joined forces with Partnership for New York City to try to help revitalize New York.

Maryam Banikarim is a graduate of Barnard College, Columbia Business School, and Columbia’s School of International Affairs. She has served as the chief marketing officer of Nextdoor, Hyatt, Gannett, NBCUniversal, and Univision. She is an independent director of One Spa World and serves on the board of Barnard College.

Andy Lerner led operations, overseeing finance and production of all events and media for NYCNext. Previously, he was the founding CEO of two data and analytics companies as well as the founder of a digital media strategy and production company. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president of Time Warner Electronic Publishing.

Maryam and Andy met on the 116th Street subway platform while at Columbia Business School. They reside in New York City and are the proud parents of Natasha ’21, Nicky, and their dog, Charlie.

14

SPECIAL NOTES FROM THE LERNER CHILDREN

Dear Mom and Dad, Surprise! You get a special page in the pamphlet from Nicky and me. We decided to split this into two paragraphs since we have different voices and also I wanted mine to be funnier. I hope this night is fun and gratifying for both of you! You deserve to have a good time and a stress-free night (I know that’s not always easy!). I hope you recognize and really take in that everyone is here to celebrate how talented and amazing both of you are. I’m so proud and grateful to have such kind and supportive parents, and I’m glad to be able to celebrate with you (since your other child couldn’t make it…). I know I wouldn’t be as enchanting and wonderful as I am if I didn’t have both of you guiding me.

Love you!

Natasha

Dear Mom and Dad, I don’t know if I’ve told you that I think the things that you’ve both accomplished are awesome - from the founding of NYCNext, to everything you’ve done at home, to getting Natasha and me through life. The sheer number of people whose lives you two have positively affected is astounding. I often tell my friends at school how cool I think you guys are, and, the second they witness my mountain of evidence supporting your coolness, they immediately agree with me. You guys have stood by me and Natasha, never given up on us, and, for that, we are eternally grateful. Thank you for always doing your best to help us and to help the world.

We love you.

Dad, you have always told us life is beautiful, but more importantly, you have shown us how beautiful life really can be.

Mom, you are the Barnard woman. Bold and beautiful, you are the force who leads with grace, reason, and tenacity.

Thank you both for teaching us what it means to give love, feel love, and be loved.

17

HONOREES

SERENA ’91 AND SHAWN LEVY P’21

The Levys live in New York City and are the proud parents of four daughters, including Barnard graduate Sophie ’21.

18

SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE LEVY DAUGHTERS

Mom and Dad,

As the four of us came together to write a message of gratitude to you, we began to think about the things you have taught us, and the list ran long. You have taught us to work hard. You have taught us that chasing our dreams is always worth it, and that passion is something to be proud of. You have taught us the importance of being kind above all else. As each of us stands on the precipice of different major life moments, we are able to take comfort in the closeness of our family unit and the solace of sisterhood. This is, perhaps, the most special gift you have given us. You have raised us with a tenacity for life, a desire to learn, and to explore, always rooted in a love and appreciation for family. It is with these values that we go forth into the world, as a bedrock for who we are as young women. We have Barnard to thank for these values and ideals, too. Barnard shaped you, mom, into the formidable woman, wife, and mother that you are. It taught you, and in turn taught us, who we are.

We are so proud of you, tonight and every day. Your daughters, Sophie, Tess, Charlie, and Coco
