Welcome

The colorful fall season has arrived, and The Tewksbury Historical Society’s annual Art Show and Sale is back again. This is the 32nd year for our show and we invite you to visit us to look at and enjoy the works of the many artists participating in this year’s presentation. Many members of the Society have

spent countless hours achieving the results you see here today. Our goal is to improve this event each year and this year is no exception.

In addition to the juried works, there are many small works and portfolio pieces from these same artists who have successfully entered the show. Take the time to look at all these wonderful works of art. You might find a piece that will be just perfect in your home.

The Tewksbury Historical Society recognizes the importance of art in the community. Artists help make our community a better place to live through their artwork. we are helping to make things better in our own lives Purchasing this art supports the artists and helps the continue our programs within the community. current fundraising efforts of the Society will go towa renovation of the barn at 49 Old Turnpike Road. completed, the barn will house the evergrowing historic archive which the Society is dedicated to maintainin

for all who are interested in the history of the area. More tha ever, it is important that we preserve the history of this wond area we are privileged to live in.

History of the Art Show

Cynthia McAdoo loved her home in Tewksbury Township. It was high on the top of Fox Hill Road overlooking the spectacular country of Oldwick, Lamington and beyond where she and her husband, Mac (Francis), raised their family, never to leave. Things in and around Tewksbury began to change with time and the completion of Route 78 during the late seventies and early eighties. Farms started to break up and developers were slowly discovering this beautiful jewel made up of farms that had been in families for generations, as well as those found by people lucky enough to have discovered Tewksbury Township on their own: stone arch bridges; churches set in amazing, beautiful spaces; pretty, quaint villages; roads bordered by wild, orange daylilies following along the many streams; fields full of cows, sheep and horses; thick woods of huge trees filled with all kinds of wildlife; our own Hell Mountain; tons of history and great people!

Cynthia, an artist herself, had an idea to launch an art show and rally artists to paint scenes here in Tewksbury with the idea of saving these parts of our Township on canvas through art before it was lost forever. All this came together in 1989 when The Art Show was sponsored by Cynthia’s church, the Lamington Presbyterian Church.

Then, in 1990, under Cynthia’s guidance, it became The Tewksbury Historical Society Art Show, still held at the Lamington Presbyterian Church and chaired by Cynthia for three years. This first show (1990) was held for two days in midOctober with sixty-five artists entering ninety-eight works of which forty-two sold. There were two hundred and forty-four attendees! A grand reception was held on the first evening.

The Show moved to the Zion Lutheran Church Administration and School building on Church Street/Vliettown Road in November of 1993 and was extended to three days

apples and cherry chrysanthemums, welcomed guests along with hors d’oeuvres brought by members and the Society’s famous strawberry punch!

The Show was expanded to four days in 1995 with two changes. It was our first Juried Show and it was to be themed.

A small tent

The Fairmont Presbyterian Church School House became our home in 1996 and 1997 while the construction of the addition to the Zion’s Christian Education Building in Oldwick was taking place. At this time we started to widen our scope to afford artists more freedom of subjects.

In 2005 the Show was dedicated to Marion Katnack, a former member of the Society who had co-chaired the Tewksbury Historical Society Art Show with her good friend and fellow teacher, Barbara Olsen. She was a long-time resident and beloved teacher at the Old Turnpike School. An award was established in her name in 2008 titled “Best Landscape in Tewksbury”.

The Art Show continued along the same vein, however the idea of having a theme for each Show was dropped. Then in 2013 we lost Mary Elizabeth Young, who came from an old Tewksbury family and had chaired the Art Show, making so many of our Receptions special with her music. Year after year, she managed, somehow, to get her huge, beautiful and fragile harp in and out of her car, in and out of the CEB and play during the entire two hours while people wandered around looking at the paintings, small works and portfolios. That year the Show was dedicated to her.

We did not hold the Art Show in 2015 and 2016. It came back in 2017 with a new face! The Show began with a special “catered” Preview and Artist Reception on a Friday in late October/early November and continued through the next Saturday. It was a beautiful, huge success as it continues to be!

and raise their children. Elsie and Peter were Charter Members of the Tewksbury Historical Society. Their magnificent barn was home not only to P.J.’s remarkable collection of cars but luckily, he was able to clear space for us to store large items used each year for the Art Show - exhibit panels, sandwich boards, signs and more, all of which are now stored in the Carriage House in Oldwick.

Our Tewksbury Art Show of 2021 was dedicated to Elsie.

On to 2022 and 2023! We are working hard, having fun and looking forward again to a beautiful Artist Reception and Show of fine paintings, small works and Portfolios for 2024. So glad you joined us!

Doris Ettlinger, a native of Staten Island, is a watercolorist and illustrator. She received a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1973, an MA, and an MFA in printmaking from the University of WisconsinMadison in 1976 and 1977, respectively. She has illustrated over 40 children's books, including the award-

winning titles “The Orange Shoes” and “A Book for Black-Eyed Susan". She collaborated on the "Little House" program for Harper Collins, producing picture books and chapter books based on the writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder. She has done work for Sleeping Bear Press, American Girl, Albert Whitman & Co., Houghton Mifflin, and Simon & Schuster.

She honed her watercolor skills under Charles Reid, Thomas Schaller, Tony Van Hasselt, and Sterling Edwards. Her earliest mentor was her mother, Minnie Bush Ettlinger, who showed in Staten Island and, competitively, in Manhattan.

Doris teaches at the Musconetcong Watercolor Group and The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ. She conducts workshops and demonstrates her technique for art groups. Her livestream demos have been edited and appear on her YouTube channel.

Ettlinger is an elected member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and a signature member of the Garden State Watercolor Society. Her paintings have won awards in numerous exhibitions. In 2024 her work is included in the 154th International Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society.

Michael McFadden, artist and educator, reimagines and transforms poignant moments from the Musconetcong River in Hampton, NJ. A native of Fort Wayne, IN, he studied at Carleton College, Purdue University, and the University of WisconsinMadison, where Michael received an MFA. In 1978 he established an art studio and fine furniture workshop in the Tribeca area of New York City. In 1987 he and Doris moved their studios to an 18thcentury grist mill in Hampton, NJ where they live and raised their children. Michael taught art, engineering, and architecture at Hunterdon Central High School.

His images are inventions based on memory and imagination. He transforms his personal experience of poignant events and shared experiences into abstract images. His paintings are constructed from a personalized vocabulary of marks and shapes. He creates a visual environment that invites exploration. His color harmonies, composition, and calligraphic brushwork produce expressive, high-contrast images that engage the viewer through shared impressions and experiences.

His work has won awards in numerous exhibitions, including the annual show at Phillips Mill in Bucks County, PA. Recently Michael’s painting, "Golden Hour", was used as the signature image for the 2023 Highlands Art Show at the Morris Museum.

Art Mediums

Water-based acrylic paint* is composed of pigment particles dispersed in an acrylic polymer emulsion. There are three main components in any acrylic paintpigment, binder, and vehicle (water).

Watercolor is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a waterbased solution. Watercolor refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork.

Charcoal drawing is an art technique that uses charred wood to create drawings.

Charcoal is a black, crumbly material made from carbon used since the Renaissance.

Oil paint* is a type of slowdrying paint that consists of particles of pigment suspended in a drying oil - commonly linseed oil. For several centuries, oil painting has been perhaps the most prestigious form of Western Art.

Graphite is a material made from crystalized carbon mixed with wax. It makes a mark when pressed or rubbed onto and dragged over paper or another surface.

*Medium Samples Courtesy of Artist Ellen Dunnder, Tewksbury

Lithography is a planographic (relating to or denoting a printing process in which the printing surface is flat) method of printing originally based on the immiscibility (incapable of mixing) of oil and water. The

printing is from a stone or metal plate with a smooth surface. A wax drawing is applied to one of the surfaces and linked to create the image by using a press.

Photography* is the process of recording an image on light-sensitive film, a digital sensor, paper, or various other surfaces.

Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines or areas are incised using acid into a metal plate to hold the ink.

Collage from the French meaning to glue, describes the technique of composing an artwork by gluing a wide range of materials, such as pieces of paper, fabric, old photos, or newspaper clippings, to a surface.

*Medium Samples Courtesy of Artist Ellen Dunnder, Tewksbury

Art Work* is a physical object that may have an aesthetic and/or conceptual value. This could be a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, an installation, a drawing, a collage as examples.

Artworks can be created with a very wide range of techniques. Many artists combine several techniques and mediums in their works.

Mixed Media* describes artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed.

Assemblages, collages, and sculpture are three common examples of art using different media. *Medium Samples Courtesy

Gouache is an opaque watercolor, consisting of natural pigment, water, and a binding agent.

Silver Gelatin Prints are black and white prints in which the image consists of silver metal particles suspended in a gelatin layer.

Cyanotype Printing is a technique that involves laying a negative or objects on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing to UV light.

The Tewksbury Historical Society turns 35 this year and in honor of the milestone, the Board decided to go in search of inspiration for a new logo. The goal was to find something that would represent the spirit of Tewksbury while illustrating the passage of time. THS board member and archivist George Cassa happened to see a lovely painting of 49 Old Turnpike Road in Oldwick hanging in a nearby gallery. The image was created by NJ artist Anne Stoeber in 2009 and had received an Honorable Mention at the Tewksbury Art Show and Sale. The scene of the painting pre-dates Superstorm Sandy. The trees and the picket fence are absent today, but have been recorded for posterity by Ms. Stoeber.

The image of 49 Old Turnpike has added significance in that the building it depicts has been purchased by the Society as its future headquarters. The historic property was built in the 1840’s, boasts 2 floors and has a barn which will house the extensive collection of Tewksbury memorabilia. The doors of the new headquarters are tentatively scheduled to open to the public in 2026. Tewksbury

The Board decided to purchase the painting and asked THS member and graphic artist Laura LaFemina to use it as the foundation for designing the new logo. “Visualizing a new design is essential for giving life to an idea effectively. By working closely with the THS Board members and finding inspiration from a

historical painting of the Society's future location, we are delighted to unveil our new logo. This emblem symbolizes our commitment to Tewksbury and the preservation of its rich history. Thank You THS for the opportunity to contribute to Tewksbury’s history."

LaFemina, Logo Designer and Member of THS

The painting will hang in a place of honor when 49 Old Turnpike opens its doors, and the Society hopes the logo it gave rise to will be recognized and appreciated for years.
