After another successful production this year, LADS has begun rehearsals for its next production.

Production 2024 runs from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd March 2024, in Lauder Public Hall.

Please join us for a relaxed evening which will have you falling off your seats with laughter!

Included in the production are two very relatable one act plays.

Flushed, by Ron Nichol: This hilarious play is set in the ladies’ toilets at a singles’ night. Three women are in the toilets - what can possibly go wrong?

The Book Club at Little Witterington, by Joan Greening – winner of the Scottish Community Drama Association One Act Play Festival in Edinburgh 2023: In this very comical play, the ladies of the Book Club are wary of letting a newcomer to the village join their group. Will she fit the bill?

Plus, watch out for our comedy extras still to be announced. We will have our usual bistro-style seating with a bar and snacks, so please note this fun night out it in your diary and come along. Look forward to seeing you then!

A Decade of Making Lauder Blooming Lovely!

Although this is now old news, we wanted to take this opportunity to give a huge shout out to everyone who helped us in so many ways in the run up to the Beautiful Scotland judge's visit back in August. Thanks to your help we were able to bring home another Gold for our home town along with an armful of trophies! Thank you everyone! It was wonderful to see so many of our high street businesses (and Primary 3!) getting involved in our 10th birthday celebrations by decorating their shop windows for us. Congratulations to Weigh Greener for winning the window display competition.

Following on from our continuingly successful Book Swap Cupboard by the church gate we've started a Jigsaw Swap thanks to the Leisure Centre for hosting it for us. So, if you have a complete jigsaw in good condition that you'd like to pass on simply add it to the Jigsaw Swap basket and help yourself to another one.

If you're looking for a wreath workshop this year why not pop along to the Scout Hall on Saturday the 2nd of December between 10 am and 12 noon. We'll be holding our popular drop-in, all natural workshop, probably the cheapest wreath workshop around at just £10 a wreath (cash only). You're very welcome to bring along your own bits of ribbon and additional bling to make your creation truly unique. As this workshop can get busy you might want to bring along your own secateurs to use. Accompanied children very welcome.

THIRLESTANE CASTLE

Thirlestane Castle’s daily guided tours drew to a close at the end of October, while private tours, coach groups and apartment guests continue to be welcomed during the winter months. The Castle has enjoyed an incredible season, with thousands of visitors coming through the doors to experience its 400-year history. Multiple five-star reviews are a testament to the exceptional guides and volunteers who bring Thirlestane to life, passionately sharing stories and ensuring each guest leaves with unforgettable memories.

Without the time and dedication of Thirlestane’s guides, it would not be possible for the Castle to welcome so many visitors. Each new guide is offered training and joins a supportive community to enhance their skills and confidence. The Castle will re-open for daily guided tours in May 2024, and if you would like to join the team and help deliver this unique visitor experience, you can find out more details and get in touch through the website - https:// thirlestanecastle.co.uk/volunteers/.

The Castle held many outstanding events this year, which have been well-supported. The BVAC Classic Festival of Motoring will return on the 2nd of June 2024. Keep an eye out for more Afternoon Teas and some additional special events, which will be announced in the coming months.

Thirlestane Castle is grateful for the ongoing support of the local community and recognises their pivotal role in promoting and sharing Thirlestane as a notable attraction for visitors from across the world.

2023 BVAC CLASSIC FESTIVAL OF MOTORING REVIEW This year’s BVAC Classic Festival of Motoring, at Thirlestane Castle, was deemed a huge success with record breaking crowds, exciting new attractions and the traditionally extensive display of wonderful classic cars and machinery.

Taking place on 18 June, the event celebrated 100 years of the iconic British MG car, with a special display of over 100 pre-war, classic and modern MG’s on front of the Castle. In addition, scattered across the beautiful grounds of Thirlestane Castle, visitors were treated to hundreds more wonderful classic cars – of all shapes, sizes and types - from almost 60 car clubs, as well as military vehicles, motorcycles and buses.

New for the 2023 BVAC Classic was the addition of live rally action, courtesy of the Scottish Summer Hill Rally, which gave visitors the chance to see 35 unique and dramatic Hill Rally cars setting off for a special stage, in the grounds of Thirlestane Castle.

Away from the cars, visitors enjoyed breath-taking BMX Stunt shows, pipe band displays and browsing the collection of over 50 fabulous food, drink and retail exhibitors to keep everyone fuelled and entertained throughout the day.

Plans are underway to make the 2024 BVAC Classic an even better day out for all the family and we’re looking forward to announcing details very soon.

LAUDER LASS

The Summer saw Lauder Lass amidst some luscious grass, some spectacular sunsets with old and mischievous new friends. Often they could all be seen nickering and bickering at their meeting place, She would Mother the new then graze with the old.

As the Summer went on nature decided changes were to take place, unexpected and sad changes, where she lost her adopted son who she had Mothered since day one.

But with the help of her newfound friends, the Social corner and a whole dose of tlc there were signs of her adjusting, but Nature hit her with another blow when her second eldest charge fell ill. It was clear to see her face was lined and full of woe. But she sensed what was afoot and clearly clung on to what and who she knew.

Adjusting to change is a difficult one for all, not just for humans but animals as well. So, with Christmas afoot don’t forget an extra treat not just for you and your friends but your animals as well.

May you be surrounded by friends and good cheer this Christmas and throughout the coming year. Merry Christmas.

Lauder Primary School

It’s been a busy time at Lauder Primary and Nursery!

Our nursery children both new and existing, are all settled back into nursery life. They are enjoying ‘Forest Fridays’ outside in our woodland area and have been joining in with stories and singing with Elaine from ‘Debutots’. They are beginning to make visits down to the local shops-this week they visited the fruit shop and were gifted an apple each from the shopkeeper. I wonder where they will visit next?

In Primary 1 and 2, the pupils have been learning all about their senses. They have had great fun guessing foods using their sense of smell and taste, navigating the outdoors with blindfolds and learning all about different sounds and about how the ear works. They have even been exploring their sense of touch by walking on cooked spaghetti and pom poms!

Our Primary 3 and 4 pupils have taken on the exciting role of ‘Outdoor Creators’. They have loved being out in Lucky’s Wood creating solutions to some real-life outdoor challenges.

They have been designing rainwater recyclers, conducting waterproof experiments and designing and creating a sheltered den in the woods to name but a few. Our P4 pupils have also just received their very own iPads, to support them with their learning both in and out school-you can imagine the excitement!

Primary 5 pupils have been developing their

skills of passing, running and teamwork during a block of touch rugby, led by the coaches from Melrose Rugby Club. Alongside P6 and P7, they have been learning all about Japanthis has involved listening to visitors from the Japanese Consulate, creating beautiful artwork and learning about Japanese traditions and ceremonies.

Our Primary 6 pupils showed great compassion and responsibility, by leading the school through our annual harvest assembly.

They did a wonderful job of telling everyone of the importance of harvest and being thankful for what we have. We must also say thank you to our parents/carers, who were able to donate items for the Lauder Larder.

Primary 7 are all recovered from their amazing time away, during their school residential to Dalguise in Perthshire. They were a credit to the school and all of our pupils were willing to try new challenges and support their peers along the way. The staff accompanying the pupils thoroughly enjoyed their time away with them and even more so, as the weather turned out to be kinder than forecast!

As one of our whole school developments, we have been working incredibly hard to expand our outdoor learning provision in our woodland area known as ‘Lucky’s Wood.

With Miss Riddell at the helm and the support of school staff, pupils, volunteers and the local community, we have enhanced our area in terms of space, activities and resources, that

will allow for exciting teaching and learning opportunities. We had a ceremony to mark the grand opening of Lucky’s Wood and invited those who were involved, to come along to help with our celebrations. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind on the day, but we still managed to cut the ribbon, sing songs and celebrate everyone’s tremendous efforts.

Term 2 is now in full swing and before we know it, our P1-3 pupils will be getting started on our Christmas Nativity rehearsals! Where does the time go!

Lauder Primary School Parent Council Lauder Primary School Parent Council is made up of parents/ carers and school staff, and as well as acting as a liaison between the school and parents the Council works hard to enhance the school experience for our pupils.

This might include representing parent views on the education that our school provides, or collaborating with the school on projects such as developing our Outdoor Learning approach or the development of a new school website, or arranging fun activities like the Spring Bop discos and events such as the Summer Scoff and the upcoming Christmas Fayre on Saturday 18th November (11am at the Primary School – all welcome!).

The committee of volunteers also works tirelessly on various fundraising initiatives throughout the year to allow the Parent Council to support lots of different areas of school life. In the past we’ve raised thousands towards larger projects like buying new playground equipment, and providing new books and literacy resources. The Parent Council also regularly contributes to things like swimming lessons, the annual Good Citizen Award and the school hardship fund.

The Parent Council currently has two main focus areas for fundraising. Firstly, to improve the maths and numeracy within the school, working to fund some additional core resources and stateof-the-art materials to support learning, teaching and assessment.

Secondly, we want to help the school fund an outdoor area to support their play pedagogy developments, allowing Primary 1 pupils and staff to access outdoor educational experiences as part of their immediate environment.

As well as events at school, the Parent Council also raise funds through a weekly lottery, the EasyFundraising scheme and via Stikins Name Labels. We’d love you to get involved as well!

Our lottery pays out a cash prize every week to one of our supporters, as well as offering the chance to win £25,000 and great spot prizes. Lauder SWRI Lauder SWI held their first meeting of 2023-24 in Lauderdale Scout Hall on Tuesday 12th September at 2pm.

President Carol Patterson welcomed Tracey Humphreys, from Body Essentials in Kelso, who then gave a very interesting insight into techniques and products she uses in her beauty therapies. Some members volunteered for treatments so that others could see the good results for themselves.

The afternoon was very enjoyable with many happy faces and laughter.

Senga Towers gave a grateful vote of thanks, which was followed by a cuppa and raffle.

The competition, judged by Tracey, featured favourite hats and the winners were 1st Elizabeth Stephenson, 2nd Carol Patterson and 3rd Wendy Gilchrist.

The Lauder SWI October meeting was held on 10th Oct. in Lauderdale Scout Hall at 2pm.

President Carol Patterson introduced John Nichol from Selkirk who gave an extremely entertaining talk, including fascinating facts and stories, about The Haining in Selkirk. This was accompanied by a screen presentation of old and new photographs relating to the history of the building and grounds and the ongoing project led by The Trust to revitalise the grounds and renovate the house. John has been involved with the estate all his life and is very actively involved at every stage of the work as well as being a director of the Haining Charitable Trust. He indicated that the paths are now constructed to be fully accessible to all and encouraged us to visit.

The afternoon was very enjoyable, listening to John’s funny stories, as well as learning about the bear and Dandy Dinmont Terriers.

Carol Patterson gave a grateful vote of thanks followed by a cuppa and raffle.

Winners of the competition featuring a picture or an ornament of a building was judged by John. In 1st place was Wendy Gilchrist, 2nd Elma Middlemas and 3rd Sheila Hardie.

Our November SWI meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th November in the Lauderdale Scout Hall at 2pm. Lesley Alexander will be demonstrating how to make a lovely Christmas cake. Please bring an old Christmas decoration with you for the competition.

And our December SWI meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th December in

the Lauder Scout Hall at 2pm. Nicola Cockburn will be demonstrating how to make a Christmas wreath. Please bring a photograph of your decorated Christmas cake for the competition.

All are welcome to join us for our interesting and friendly afternoons on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

Lauderdale Curling Club Due to problems at the ice rink the start of the season was delayed. We finally had our opening bonspiel on the 19th of October with vice president Colin Stirling defeating president Angie Bisson scoring more shots. The Mathieson Cup has now started and we hope to complete by the end of December. If anyone is interested in curling and would like to try please contact Kelso Ice Rink or Colin Stirling.

Group Members of the Art Group have once again been busy over the summer months. We worked to produce a collaborative piece in the form of a stained glass window to celebrate the 350 years of Lauder Church. This was on display in the church during the “Open Days” event. Since opening in 2022 the Bird Gardens has welcomed nearly seven thousand visitors. This figure accounts for first-time visitors only as the admission tickets are valid for a year. This was a decision we made before opening as we wanted the Bird Gardens to be fully accessible, including financially accessible. Having a nominal admission charge which allows full access for a year, means that for the community it is effectively free to visit and use the site.

This year the Bird Gardens celebrated an SSE grant to extend the pathways into the upper section of the grounds. These walkways will be opened this winter allowing visitors to access the full site.

Signs will be put-in-place to whet the appetite for the exciting plans for this area’s development. These include many native species whose conservation breeding programmes Bird Gardens is keen to be involved with: such as the iconic capercaillie, the elegant Eurasian crane and charming rock Ptarmigan. There are also plans to work with some native mammals such as Scottish wildcat and red squirrel.

Of course, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a Bird Garden but progress has been brilliant during the past few years and with the support of gallant volunteers the site is really taking shape. We are pleased that during this first year of being open, visitors have been able to celebrate the journey of development with the team on the ground as it happens.

Easter 2023 saw the launch of the Bird Gardens education and

learning strategy with the first official school trips being scheduled.

Alex, the learning manager, has produced some incredible packages which tie-in with the curriculum and are good fun. The first few school trips that attended had a great time and the kids went home having had a good experience and having learned some cool stuff. The team looks forward to welcoming school visits for many years to come.

A quick note to explain Bird Gardens Scotland. It is an incorporated community interest company with two key objectives. To promote the conservation of the natural world. And, to promote a more sustainable way of living. The visitor centre is an exhibit as a fully off-grid, eco-build made with straw bales. Whilst currently being managed by Mark & Owen, Bird Gardens Scotland is being established in a way that it will become its own self-propelling entity (with a Board of Directors) which will endure into the future.

The coming year has many exciting plans and we look forward to watching these materialise into exhibits, gardens and enjoying watching the threatened birds that live there.

Admission tickets are £10 adult / £6.50 all concessions and are valid for a year so visitors can come as many times as they would like for a year. Open 10-4.30 daily (except Christmas Day and NYear’s Day).

Lauder Over 60s We had a sunny summer outing to Alnwick Gardens in June where a bus of forty travelled for a day out in the gardens and Alnwick in beautiful sunshine! Followed by a High Tea at the Tankerville Arms in Wooler. A great day was had by all.

We will be holding our annual Christmas Lunch on Thursday 14th December in the Lauderdale Hotel - please see posters for further details.

Lauder Flower Show

The annual Lauder Flower Show took place on a very wet Saturday on the 26th of August. Despite the poor weather, we had lots of great entries across all the different classes from vegetables to handicrafts, baking to the children’s section. The committee would like to thank everyone who supported the 2023 show by growing, baking or making an entry; everyone who came to support the show in the afternoon and our all our business sponsors. We would also like to thank the staff at Lauder Primary school for helping the pupils to create such amazing flower themed artwork for the show.

We had people who have supported and entered the show for many years, but it was also lovely to see new faces who have never taken part before. It was great to have a new family win the McGregor Rose Bowl for the most outstanding exhibit in the show for their Basket of Plenty. Congratulations to all our winners!

As a new committee, we are keen to keep the flower show an event in the Lauderdale calendar by updating our schedule, so it appeals to everyone. If you have any ideas, please feel free to contact our Facebook page or join the committee!

The Probus Club of Lauderdale Past president Ian Brotherston congratulated new president John Duffield at their AGM in September. The club hold monthly meetings on the second Tuesday each month in the Lauderdale Hotel. After a two course lunch they are entertained by a guest speaker giving a talk on various subjects sometimes accompanied by visual display.

Fleece, Fibre and a Whole Lot More!

It's been a busy six months here At Birkhill House CIC. In the Spring, we were delighted to be named runner-up for a National Youth Work Award in the category of Art & Creativity. We were awarded this honour in conjunction with Beyond Earlston youth group, our co-collaborators in so many creative adventures.

We also hosted our first Open Day in June, which saw over 100 people visit Birkhill to learn about the work we do and enjoy an afternoon of crafts, animals and games. July saw the second annual iteration of "Fibre Week", in which we hosted 22 workshops, events, demos and talks based around fibre processing and fibre craft. The weather was fair and participants turned out in droves to learn from local fibre experts and enthusiasts, as well as the Tweed Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, who put on a fabulous display and demo. We were grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for their support and already have plans to run the week again next year.

Our involvement in the fibre world continues: we offered two summer fleece & fibre internship places to Heriot Watt University textiles students for the third year running, welcoming Sadie Worrall and Rachael Storrie. We have also recently been asked by Tangled Fibre Festival to organise and lead their new Fleece Market next May/June. In support of this, we have launched "Wooly Wednesdays", free fibre processing sessions from 2-4pm each Wednesday in which

attendees can help sort, skirt and process different kinds of sheep breeds that we have collected and will continue to collect in the lead-up to Tangled 2024. If you are a local smallholder with a shed full of fibre that has no use, get in touch! We can help!

Our natural dye garden, established in conjunction with a group of participants who came along from the Scottish Borders Rape Crisis Centre each week to plant, pot up, tend and harvest, has gone from strength to strength.

This 18-month long collaboration has now come to an end but we will forge ahead with the work in the garden to maintain and expand on the wonderful start that has been made. If there are groups out there who might be interested in scheduling sessions in the garden here and learning about the dye process, please do get in touch.

We also now have a range of dried natural dye products in our shop here and also on our Etsy, for those natural colour enthusiasts out there.

‘Music for the Soul’

‘Music for the Soul’ is the title of Lauderdale Community Choir’s next concert performance which will be held at Earlston High School at 6 pm on Saturday, 16th December 2023 and, as is our usual practice, this will be accompanied by a Christmas Craft Fair. Proceeds from the concert and the craft fair will be split between choir funds and donations to charities.

The choir was formed in 2010 and, under the leadership of our Musical Director, James Robertson, we have an ever expanding and eclectic repertoire of music including classical, pop, sacred, folk, carols and theatre music. The choir currently has approximately fifty-five active members with a good balance across soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. We always like to welcome new members so, if you fancy giving us a try, please come along to one of our rehearsals.

No need to book just come along any Wednesday that you feel like a walk. Most walks are through woods, along tracks and around fields. (Sorry, no dogs allowed.)

After the walk you will be rewarded with a free Coffee / Tea in The Lauderdale Hotel.

A Personal ‘THANK YOU’

Around February last year the Kirk Session invited me to plan, propose and present to elders a provisional programme of events in recognition of the 350th anniversary of the prominent A-Listed building known as Lauder Church. By the end of the year an Anniversary Programme was approved thanks to the readiness of certain people to bring the programme to life.

I was unable to see the successful 350th Anniversary Programme through to full fruition. However, so much time was spent by many during 2022 and into 2023 that I feel the need to record my personal thanks to all who contributed actively to the initial Anniversary Programme.

Oxton & Channelkirk

Senior Citizens

Oxton and Channelkirk Senior Citizens had a fantastic bus outing on Thursday 12 October. We departed the village at 9am and were on a lovely bus hired from Skene Transport Services, driven

by Ian, our coach driver for the day. We followed the Borders road to The Carriages at Bellingham Golf Club where we had tea or coffee with scones or bacon rolls. There was a wonderful view from the golf club and we highly recommend this place for food.

Once we left Bellingham we then drove on to The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall, where there was an opportunity to walk to the wall or visit the exhibition or gift shop at The Sill. We also saw Sycamore Gap tree being removed that day after being vandalised, it was a sad site to see. We left The Sill at 1.30 and made our way through the amazing countryside to The Bluebell Inn at Crookham for our dinner. The food here was lovely and the service for 35 people was fantastic, many thanks to the staff. After we left here we returned to Oxton and a great day was had by all the residents on the trip.

The Library will be welcoming Santa again this year during the Lauder Lights Festival. We do prefer our visitors to call slightly more regularly than the Big Beardy Man but as we don’t levy fines for late returns even those who only stop by once a year won’t be out of pocket!

The Club has enjoyed a busy summer season and are now engaged in the limited, but nonetheless enjoyable, winter period where weather conditions make the challenges of playing at this historic course intense.

Planned maintenance of the course will be carried out during the winter and the provision of an artificial (all weather) driving platform on our existing practise area will go a long way to enhancing the Club’s ability to provide an all year round capability that benefits all members. The latter is being funded by RES from their community benefit fund.

All sections played an active part of the summer season and we congratulate the following gentlemen’s champions for 2023: • A Division – Davy Howie (Runner-Up Calum Jeffries) • B Division – Craig Douglas (Runner-Up Billy Hunter) • C Division – Bob Anderson (Runner-Up Andrew Kay) The Ladies champion was Dot Robinson and Runner-Up Maureen Rennie.

Inter Club matches were contested by the men’s and Ladies sections and by the LEGGS (Lauder Elderly Gentlemen’s Golfing Society). The LEGGS Captain Roger Lovejoy reports a very busy season with matches against St. Boswells, Gifford, Torwoodlee and Duns as well as outings to Torwoodlee in the Spring and Gullane in the autumn. The LEGGS meet regularly on a Monday morning and is open to golfers aged 55 plus.

The popular Happy Hackers (Social) section continue apace and it is refreshing to see so many members enjoying their Tuesday and Thursday outings at Lauder. Congratulations and thank you to Aileen Scott-Aiton for her co-ordination of this eclectic mix of golfers.

Jack Keeney and Brendan Cadogan oversee a very active Juniors Section and it is the future of the Club that we see when they come along and learn the basics of the sport. We should all encourage the Juniors to enjoy their golf and learn the nuances of the sport for better enjoyment and future competition.

The Tim Stead Trust invites you!

Tim Stead, MBE, was known for his extraordinary wide range of interests - centred around wood in some form. He worked on the interior of The Steading - his home - throughout the time he lived there, creating a truly inspirational masterpiece exuberantly executed in the opulent local hardwoods that he was passionate about. Another important part of his legacy is Scotland’s first Community Woodland, Wooplaw. In 1986 Tim made wooden axe heads to raise funds to buy and develop the woodland for the Community. This November, The Tim Stead Trust is partnering with Wooplaw Community Woodland to host a ‘Wooplaw Ramble’, a guided tour of the past, present and future story of this valuable local asset.

Tim’s affinity for wood was far-reaching, yet surprisingly, there are now too many people in the Borders who do not know about The Steading. Lauderdale Limpers

It’s been a busy summer for Lauderdale Limpers with members participating in events near and far.

As always, the Earlston Black Hill race was well supported by Lauderdale Limpers, with Alex Hastings winning the senior race and Sam Robertson, Lauderdale Junior Athletic Club, first back in the junior race.

The winning streak continued in August at the last ever Philiphaugh Hill run where Naomi Dijkman was first lady back. More recently Marc Wilkinson claimed first place at the Yetholm Shepherd’s Show Race.

Further afield the blue and yellow Lauderdale Limper vests were flying high at the Ring of Steel (Naomi Cessford and Jude Wilkinson) and the Glencoe Skyliner (Ed Wellmore). A trip to the Isle of Arran saw Gregor Ker, Jill and Marc Wilkinson take on the Goatfell race, and following the Island theme, Carol Cooke, Anne Lillico and Natalie McRitchie took on the Skye Half Marathon. In an amazing show of endurance Alex Hastings came in 7th in the Ben Nevis Ultra.

The end of summer brings a change of season, but also a significant change for Lauderdale Limpers. After 26 years of being senior coach and chief organiser, Graeme Sutherland has decided to retire from both roles. As one of the original members of Lauderdale Limpers Graeme has helped developed the club into one of the biggest in the Borders; recently celebrating its 26th year.

Graeme’s Last Lap was held in September which saw about 50 runners enjoy a 10 kilometer trail run across Lauder Common. Following a stop for some fizz at the Cairn, the runners returned the Lauderdale Hotel where Graeme was welcomed back by a piper and guard of honour. He was presented with gifts, including being named Honorary President and a Lifetime Member of Lauderdale Limpers.

Clubsport Ettrick and Lauderdale have recently recognised Graeme’s role in the wider running community where he was presented with the Services to Sport award at a recent ceremony held in Galashiels.

your local Community Foodbank, Open to All. Lauder Larder @ The Byre, next to Lauder Leisure Centre continues to provide a vital resource for many people in our local community and as you can imagine we have seen a huge increase in the volume of customers. We are an entirely volunteer led team and feel very privileged to be supporting those people in need of some help.

The shelves are stocked with food kindly donated by local people who are incredibly generous and we are extremely grateful for the food and cash donations we receive.

A huge heartfelt thanks goes out to all the local businesses, organisations and individuals that donate to us.

Again, we have joined forces with local young people completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and we currently have been volunteers with us. They are a valuable asset in helping us.

Lauder Larder shopping bags are still available for £5 each.

We are keen to find ways to run our service in a sustainable way and would encourage anyone to buy a lovely bag in support of the Larder.

We have published details on a new initiative ‘Friends of Lauder Larder’ and thank those people who have supported this.

We have a cash donation box in The Byre, it is not necessary to give, but very helpful for us to replenish stock when we are running low – this also includes our Rescue Table with food that has to be used rather than go to landfill. We encourage all the community to use this produce and kindly swap for

our core items – please also remember that we also have a ‘surplus’ box situated outside where we add fresh bread that hasn’t been taken.

Lauder Christmas Lights

The Lauder Christmas light switch on will be on Saturday 2nd December at Market Place in front of the Town Hall. This year there will be extra sparkle around Lauder thanks to a grant from the Eildon Neighbourhood Support Fund. The grant will allow the Lauder elves to purchase additional lights to fill in some of the gaps in the town, and to cover the costs for their installation. In addition, the elves will have an additional gazebo for the market.

For the switch on of the Lauder Lights, there will be a Christmas market around the tree with stalls from many local suppliers, mulled wine, and food. Santa’s Grotto will be in the Library for those who want to make their case to the man himself to make sure they are on the nice list.

The Christmas market will open at 3pm, with a special visit from the man in red at 5pm to do the all-important switch on of the lights.

The Christmas Lights committee get no financial help and are solely reliant on fundraising to make Lauder sparkle over the festive period. Thanks to everybody who has come along to our events over the past year and bought raffle tickets. It is hard to believe it is nearly a year since I left Shetland to take up my post in Channelkirk and Lauder.

When I arrived, there were certain things in the diary. One was the 350 Anniversary of Lauder Church.

We started with an Anniversary concert in May with the Lauderdale community choir, Lauder primary school choir, and our Praise band.

It was wonderful to see the Church packed. We really appreciated the support of our community.

On the 7th September we took afternoon tea to all the residents at South Gardens. Sadly, a lot of the residents were poorly but because our afternoon tea came in boxes everyone was able to enjoy it in their own time.

Next came our planter competition, we purchased 24 planters filled them and encouraged people to fill them with plants that are butterfly and bee.

We got 23 planters back. Volunteers helped both Lauder and Channelkirk primary school to fill their pots. Congratulations to the winners to P7 from Lauder primary school and P3 of Channelkirk and Shelia Hardie who won the community prize. The planters acted like archway to the church.

On Sunday 17th September was our Thanksgiving Service, we were joined by the Very Rev Dr Susan Brown Moderator of Lothian and Borders Presbytery and the Rt Rev Sally Foster Fulton this years moderator of the General Assembly. During our service a choir that Claire Davies had brought together for the occasion and our praise band played and sang.

During the service we also presented two wooden bowls. The bowls were hand turned and made from local wood with the cross of St Cuthbert in its centre. These were made by Tony Nelson from the community shed. Many of expressed how they felt encouraged by the service, the sharing of the cake.

27 of us then went on to the Lauderdale Hotel for lunch together.

Our final event was to back to the roots where Lauder Church began 350 years to Thirlestane Castle. All who attended had a great afternoon hearing and seeing the castle’s developments.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for any of our celebrations. We look forward to serving you for the next 350 years!!

The Ladies of Bright Ideas would like to say a huge “Thank you” to the congregation of Channelkirk and Lauder Churches and others outwith the Church far and near, including Australia, for the tremendous response in supporting “Opportunities Zambia” which raises money to feed schoolchildren in Zambia and gives clothing for the “fish and chip” babies, so called because they are wrapped in newspaper when they are born as they have nothing.

With your help, we have had the pleasure of taking donations to Sukie Barker (Darnick) of Opportunities Zambia which included 153 knitted jumpers and hats, 50 bouncy balls, 230 pencils, rubbers and sharpeners, lots of sewing and knitting equipment, reading glasses, 200 pairs of ladies/girls pants, along with over £200 in donations.

We also made sanitary pads for the young ladies in Zambia. There’s a coffee morning at Darnick village hall on the last Saturday of every month raising funds for this appeal We have had the pleasure of knitting Easter Bunnies, rabbits, etc., hats, scarves, fingerless mitts, and also “Worry Worms” for people with anxiety, and surpisingly “Boobs” for helping with breast feeding. Always sewing heart shaped cushions for breast cancer patients and “Drain Bags”, all these sent to Borders General and Western General Hospitals. We have knitted cardigans, hats and blankets for Baby Care Unit at the hospital. Birds Nests for injured birds at Rescue Centre Thank you so much to everyone who has donated wool or material to our Craft Group.

Parent Council

The Channelkirk Parent Council is proud to report a remarkable 2022-2023 year. We have been baking, pouring teas and coffees, hosting a quiz night, and had a fantastic band night thanks to the generosity of Wrong Side of the Grass and Hannah Mary's Nepalese food truck. With the support of our wonderful local community and grants, we have been able to fund school trips to the panto in Musselburgh, host a year of Lego League, install new outdoor equipment and replace the outdoor storage facilities, as well as renovate the nursery cloak room and garden. We want to pay special thanks to Toddleburn Wind Farm for a grant for outdoor play equipment, to the Ronald Miller Foundation for new sports equipment, to Creative Scotland for funding murals painted by the school children under the direction of Glen Leslie, and to DLX Wind Farm via the Oxton and Channelkirk Community Council for funding decorations, snacks, and prizes for our Halloween disco.

Carly Newton has stepped down after four exceptional years first as vice chair and then chair but will continue as our grant-writing hero. Our new chair, Annabel Haskell, has already had a strong first year on the council as our nursery representative, and we look forward to following her lead.

For 2023-2024, we have a calendar of events planned, from baked potatoes at the Oxton Fireworks on Nov 4th to a Summer BBQ and Fair at the end of the school year. Show Jumping Amy Morris has had a great summer on the horses.

She started at the Royal Highland Show where she picked up placings every day and then went on to win the Young Masters Final at 140cm on the last day!

She had two horses clear and into the jump off and finished clear and fastest time on Up To Date Show Girl (Lola ) and just tipped a pole with Let’s Hope to finish 5th.

Next big show was the Scottish Extravaganza where Lola picked up the top mare in the 140cm Grand Prix.

Both horses jumped superbly in the 125cm championship to finish 2nd and 3rd.

We travelled south to the Scope festival at Southview where again both mares were in the placings every day.

The Scottish National Equestrian Centre held the south east championship where Amy and Lola were on top form and again took the top spot in a seriously fast jump off.

Once we were back home the next big event was the Scottish horse of the Year show where Amy and Let’s The Lauderdale News Winter 2023

Hope came joint first in the two fence challenge having been equal first last year. Five rounds are jumped and this year the competition finished at 1m73.

We are now focusing on the winter premiers.

Lauderdale Historical Society The Lauderdale Historical Society has had a busy summer season and would welcome NEW members from Lauderdale and further afield. Membership is £10.00 per year.

On 19th April we were given an excellent talk

by Mrs Alice Gully outlining her participation in the Mongol Derby during August 2022. This was followed by the A.G.M. on Wednesday 17th May. After a summer break the Society gathered for a lunch at the Lauderdale Hotel prior to departing by coach for a visit to the Trimontium Museum. The Society members heard a talk by Rob Longworth, Heritage Officer, which covered the extent of Roman occupation of the local area and its influence over time. Society members then had a full tour of the museum.

In September the Society heard an excellent talk by Mr David McLean on “Votes for Women in Southeast Scotland 1870 - 1920” On 18th October we will be hearing a talk by Michael Middlemiss on Lauder Burgesses and Burgess Acres.

In November we will welcome Ms Mary Craig who will give us a talk on Lauder Witches.

The final meeting of the 2023 season will be on 20th December for the Society’s Christmas Dinner.

A full Syllabus for the Society’s 2023/24 season was recently placed on Bygone Lauder Facebook and others.

The Hidden History of the Royal Burgh of Lauder book has again sold well, meaning that Lauder good causes have benefitted from the sales, every penny raised goes to all the recipients. So far, we have raised and given away £2.000.

I would like to give a big Thank You to Jason in the Post Office and to Thirlestane Castle for allowing me to display the book in their retail section.

Book Club Lauder Book Club continues to flourish

We met for the first time in January and so far have read nine different books of varying styles and themes.

We are still using Galashiels Library’s book scheme as there are over a hundred titles to choose from.

That’s enough to keep us going for a while yet!

We meet on the first Thursday afternoon of the month at The Lauderdale Hotel to discuss the current book over a coffee or a glass of wine. The conversation is usually very lively!

Numbers are still healthy but they may fall in the future so if you would like to be put on a waiting list please let me know.

LAUDER PROVISIONAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS SHEETS George Megahy recently unearthed a number of Lauder Community Council News Sheets dating from the 1970s when Community Councils were introduced to replace Town Councils under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1975.

These are a fascinating insight into the burning issues affecting Lauder nearly 50 years ago as well as advertising community events and reporting on the activities of various groups.

Highlights include – • The National Library of Scotland requesting a copy of each of the News Sheets for their archive.

• Demand locally for a second public telephone box in Lauder – younger readers may need to resort to Google on their smart phones to understand this!

• Planning for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

These interesting documents are available to view in the Lauderdale Library filed with the back copies of The Lauderdale News.

REPORT FROM LAUDERDALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL (LCC) Report from Lauderdale Community Council (LCC) October 2023 Lauderdale residents are reminded that the main role of community councils is to: • Represent their local area • Consult with local residents • Pass their views onto public sector organisations such as SBC, Police and NHS Borders.

Anyone who is resident in the community council area can become a temporary member to work on a specific project or to fill a vacancy. LCC would welcome more involvement from local residents.

All LCC meetings are open to the public and are advertised locally and on the LCC Facebook page along with agendas and notes of meetings.

ZOOM! – this technology is still being used for people who cannot make the meetings face-to-face. LCC misses the face to face contact but members and local residents have the choice whether to leave their fireside to come out for meetings or whether to join via ZOOM. There have been six meetings since February 2023 with discussion on : • New development at Allanbank – LCC continues to comment on the updated plans with reduction of house numbers as there are still problems which need to be sorted. LCC has been working closely with the concerned residents of Allanbank Gardens.

• Lauder Kirk – Celebrating 350 years in 2023 and some very enjoyable events have been held with a few more to come.

• Consultation is ongoing about the bus timetable and how it can be improved.

• Consultation was received about the 20mph speed limit which was unanimously supported by LCC although they keep hoping for more speeding convictions to keep speed under control.

• Wind Farm Developments - Ditcher Law (Headshaw and Hillhouse), Longcroft (Longcroft and Glenburnie. LCC has been liaising with Oxton Community Council to work together on the advantages and disadvantages of these major developments.

• A survey on the state of the pavements and dropped kerbs was held.

• The blind turning from Bluecairn at Threepword cross roads was brought to SBC attention.

• The defibrillator group has been busy and all present defibrillators are up to date.

• LCC congratulates Lauder in Bloom on its tremendous work and winning awards. It has been noted that there has been vandalism to some of the beds.

• New trees have ben planted on Edinburgh Road.

Mums (anytime) shortbread

I can’t remember when this recipe became one of our favourites in the family. Our Mum would make batches time and time again for friends and family and this has continued through our family and younger generations far and wide: Recipe: 8 oz Plain Flour | 4 oz Cornflour | 8 oz Butter | 4 oz Caster Sugar 1. Cream butter and sugar well (use a wooden spoon or electric mixer – easier with a mixer if you have one); 2. Add dry ingredients gradually, beating well in between each addition (I usually sieve the flour first); 3. Kneed well to form a smooth paste and roll onto greaseproof paper onto tray and or use shaped cutters of your choice - no more than 1/2inch thick. Prick with a fork all over; 4. Place tray / or trays into a preheated oven (325F, 170C, Gas 3) for 20mins for biscuits and 30/35apprx depending on oven; 5. When ready leave to cool on tray – sprinkle with caster sugar and enjoy!

CHAIR’S REPORT

Welcome readers to the bumper Christmas issue of the Lauderdale News.

It’s now two years and three issues since the News bounced back after the Covid crisis. We hope to keep going into the future even though at times it is challenging.

It couldn’t be done without the willingness and commitment of our voluntary committee some of whom have given their help over many years.

One such example is Lesley Wilkinson who has decided it’s finally time to stand down after a remarkable eighteen years of working on the Lauderdale News. She came on to the committee in 2005 becoming Vice Chair in 2008 and then Chair from 2011. That role continued for ten years until 2021 when she wished to resign but was persuaded to stay on as Vice Chair for a while longer. Finally and sadly we say goodbye to her with grateful thanks for her stalwart leadership. We wish you all the best for the future Lesley.

Luckily Maggie Czajka has agreed to become our new Vice Chair.

We also say farewell to Jacqui Millar and Jackie Trousdale, Committee members who will be missed. Jacqui will continue to help with the delivery of the Newsletters as before.
