The Hungarian Language

The Origin of the Hungarian Language

The history and the origin of the Hungarian language is mysterious, because there are no written records of it till the 10th century. The language in the first period of the history was influenced by Iranian and Turkish languages. The first period ended in 896 so we don’t know exactly when the language was born. The history of the language began around the XI-Xth centuries B.C. Hungarian belongs to the FinnoUgric branch of the Finno-Ugric language family, and our closest language relatives are the "Manys" and the "Hatti". Outside Hungary, it is also spoken by Hungarian communities in southern Slovakia, western Ukraine (Subcarpathia), central and western Romania (Transylvania), northern Serbia (Vojvodina), northern Croatia, northeastern Slovenia (Prekmurje), and eastern Austria. It is also spoken by Hungarian diaspora communities worldwide, especially in North America (particularly the United States and Canada) and Israel. With 17 million speakers, it is the Uralic family's largest member by number of speakers.

Who are the Székelys?

The Székelys are a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group. They are an ethnic subgroup of the Hungarian nation.Their origin has been much debated. It is, however, now generally accepted that they are either Hungarians, or the descendants of Magyarized Turkic peoples, transplanted there to guard the frontier, their name meaning simply “frontier guards.

The Székely live mainly in Harghita, Covasna and Mureş counties in Romania. They form a majority of the population in the counties of Covasna and Harghita.

Based on the official 2011 Romanian census, 1,227,623 ethnic Hungarians live in Romania, mostly in the region of Transylvania, making 19.6% of the population of this region. Of these, 609,033 live in the counties of Harghita, Covasna and Mureș, which taken together have a Hungarian majority (58%).

The Székely Dialect

● the Székely dialect is the extended form of the Hungarian language, most commonly associated with Transylvania; it has a distinctive vocabulary

● Szeklers have an obvious accent, they have a special, deeper “e” "a" and " ö" sound as well

● living in a mixed language environment forces the usage of some Romanian words, or words that only we understand instead of Hungarian ones

● for example instead of saying in Hungarian “krumpli”, what means potato, we say “pityóka”, and usually the Hungarian people don’t understand what we mean

Why Are We Proud of Our Language?

The hungarian language came from Asia and it also belongs to the Finno-Ugric language group. We are really proud of our language because it’s a really hard language and we are capable of knowing and learning it. Our language is really unique. It is said to be one of the hardest languages to learn on earth because of many reasons. One of them is that is has so many affixes unlike the Latin origin languages. We also have many words to name anything.
